Gymnasium Roof Almost Complete, Brick Going OnSee the weekly progress of our new

Construction Progress

• Foundation is complete in medial area• Exterior walls are being installed in medial center• HVAC, plumbing and electrical work is continuing• The gymnasium is approximately 60% complete• Trusses have been installed on the east wing.

It is happening! Our new campus will be open late September 2010. A visit to the site shows construction beginning at the rear of the campus and moving forward toward the front of the school. You can stop by and see the progress from the Old Madison Pike entrance to the campus, next to the sign with the architect’s rendering of the future buildings.

Dream Will Soon Be RealityBy Connie Gerlach, Director of Advancement

In late September of this year, the new campus of Pope John Paul II Catholic High School will open its doors for the first time, and a dream will become reality. The realization of that dream would not have been possible without the forethought of our founders and the generosity of our Church and our community.

The deadline for the Mrs. Linda J. Smith and the Mark & Linda Smith Family Foundation Challenge Gift is May 30, 2010. As of May 4, we have received pledges of over $967,000 toward our $1,000,000 goal, bringing the finish line into view, but we must continue our daily efforts to fund the task we have started.Pledge parties for parents have been taking place over the course of the last month, and there have been two Hard Hat Tours for our major donors, board members and special guests. Several parent tours will be offered this summer. Upon visiting the new site, and witnessing the great strides that daily construction activity has afforded, the anticipation and excitement grows in leaps and bounds.We all have come so far, but we must see our new school through to fruition. Please consider what you can do to help finalize the Challenge Gift: pray on it and act on it! Thank you and God Bless you.

Class of 2000

Elizabeth Wandler attended the University of Montevallo for three years and is currently finishing her Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Alabama in Huntsville and Calhoun Community College. She works for a medical billing company (MEDCO) where she is a customer service representative for two of their hospitals in Alabama.

Elizabeth has had the opportunity to do a lot of traveling and has started camping as a new hobby. She is still single, but does have a new addition to her family named Gypsy, a long haired black cat. Elizabeth has enjoyed a life filled with great experiences and opportunities. She fully appreciates every day as a blessing.

ADVANCEMENT UPDATE

Dan Wilcox works in the field of New Media Art, which combines artistic design and practice with cutting-edge technology. After graduating from Catholic High School, Dan received a Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering at Iowa State University in 2005 and an M.S. in Art & Technology at Chalmers University of Technology

in Göteborg, Sweden. He has been traveling with his musical thesis project entitled “robotcowboy” throughout the United States and Europe for the last 3 years and is currently working for the Ars Electronica Futurelab in Linz, Austria designing and producing interactive software for art exhibitions and commercial customers. Dan regularly performs in experimental music festivals and conferences and is always looking for the next challenge: from writing new software to mountaineering in the Alps. Dan plans to pursue a Master of Fine Arts at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh starting in the fall of 2010.

This issue, we focus on the Class of 2000. James Sommer and Mike Guzman have organized a 10-year reunion picnic on June 5 at Monte Sano State Park. Mike Guzman went to the University of Alabama in Huntsville after graduation, and obtained a degree in computer science. After college, he went to work for Lockheed Martin in their Information Technology Department. Mike is currently doing IT support at Marshall Space Flight Center.
