Montana Historical Society PONY TRACKS EXPRESS Newsletter of the Northwest Montana Posse of Westerners Supplemental Non-Member Meeting Announcement Issue Volume 6, Number 6-S Kalispell, Montana July 2019 ABOUT THE PRESENTATION Wilbur Sanders is well-known in Montana history. His life reflects the story of Montana, as a miner, pioneer, attorney, politician, who was in the midst of consistent political disappointment still managed to carve out a niche for himself in the burgeoning Terri- tory of Montana – from his role in the vigilante movement of 1863-64 to winning his greatest political victory to become one of our first U.S. Senators even as Montana itself became a state and later became known as Montana’s Old War-Horse, both due to his political legacy of steadfastly defending the Republican Party and his long-career as an able attorney. Join us for this ride through 19th-century Montana in the life of one popular Montanan as we examine the ups and downs of Sanders’ life, his interesting politics, his legal career, and even his legendary verbal abilities. Jeff Malcomson has been with the Montana Historical Society for the last 14 years and most recently the photograph archives manager. Educated with a Master’s degree in history from Colorado State University, he has been a public historian for over 20 years in the several Western states working as an archivist specializing in government records and photographs.
