ABOUT THE PRESENTATION
Wilbur Sanders
is well-known inMontana history.His life reflects thestory of Montana,a s a m i n e r ,pioneer, attorney,politician, whowas in the midsto f c o n s i s t e n tp o l i t i c a ldisappointmentstill managed tocarve out a nichefor himself in theburgeoning Terri-
tory of Montana –from his role in the vigilante movement of 1863-64to winning his greatest political victory to becomeone of our first U.S. Senators even as Montana itselfbecame a state and later became known asMontana’s Old War-Horse, both due to his politicallegacy of steadfastly defending the Republican Partyand his long-career as an able attorney. Join us forthis ride through 19th-century Montana in the life ofone popular Montanan as we examine the ups anddowns of Sanders’ life, his interesting politics, hislegal career, and even his legendary verbal abilities.
Jeff Malcomson has been with the MontanaHistorical Society for the last 14 years and mostrecently the photograph archives manager. Educatedwith a Master’s degree in history from ColoradoState University, he has been a public historian forover 20 years in the several Western states workingas an archivist specializing in government recordsand photographs. He has been known to experimentwith historical performance and to dress as WilburSanders as a stalwart Union and Lincoln man of earlyMontana Territory.
REGULAR MEETINGS
All Posse meetings are held on the 3rd Monday of themonth, except the months of December and January. All meetings begin with a Grab ’n’ Greet for a chanceto “chew the fat” and to get acquainted, followed bythe evening meal, and a presentation pertaining toWestern history.! Evening meals are open to both members and
non-members Dinners require advance
reservation. Pay for the meals at the door uponarrival!
! Walk-in seating in the “peanut gallery” for thepresentation will be available free to all Possemembers and youths under 16 and $5 each forall non-members.
! There will be our usual raffle for door prizes.! Local history authors will sign their books.! Attire: Period or historical preferred, but not
required.
