Welcome to our newest members: Ed McGrath and Ken Brigh-ton.

Well, the “summer season” is here. Many of our members are making their final prepara-tions for their trip north for the summer. I wish them safe and happy travels and hope they will all return rested and relaxed.

A lot of things will still be going on here this spring and summer. Check your emails and the Mariner for up-dates. Dinner meetings will still be the second Thursday of each month and Thirsty Thursdays will be the third Thursday (depending on interest and increased participation).

May 16-22 is National Safe Boating week. For us, every week is safe boating week. One of the best ways to boat safely is to insure your vessel is seaworthy and properly equipped. We would like to have every boat owned by a squadron member go through a vessel safety check. Our squadron has set a goal of 100% participation by our boat owning members. This inspection is performed by our own members who are VSC certified. There is no charge for this inspection, and our inspectors will even come to your dock or storage area if you wish. Contact Ronnie Babin for more information, or to schedule your inspection.

June 14 is Flag Day. We are planning to have a flag retirement ceremony at the June or July meeting. This event will take place before the regular dinner meeting. (Continued on next page)

If you have a flag that is worn, tattered, or just needs to be retired, bring it to the squadron office. Please feel free to col-lect flags that need to be properly retired from your friends and relatives.

There have been a lot of really great articles in the boating magazines and newsletters lately. I subscribe to several and check others out (usually at a doctor’s office or other waiting area) whenever I can.

Boat uS just sent out the 2015 trailering guide. If you trailer your boat, it is a very good way to check that you have everything covered to safely trailer your boat.

REMEMBER: SAFE BOATING IS NO ACCIDENT!

REMEMBER:CHECK FOR LOOSE NuTS ABOARD YOuR BOAT BEFOE LEAVING THE DOCK,

Last month our guest speaker maritime attorney Mark Ercolin was very interesting. There were many questions for Mark and he carefully answered each in turn. Thank you Mark for your presentation and taking the time with all of our questions!

next month’s guest speaker is Officer Paul McCormick of the Lighthouse Point Police department. Officer McCormick has served the department for 35 years with most of his service being in the marine division. Since our next dinner meeting is also the safe boating class graduation he will be an especially appropriate speaker. Please join us for Officer McCormick’s interesting talk.

our Vessel Safety check team led by Lt/C Ronnie Babin S continues to log more vessel safety exams. As of April 20th we have completed a total of 51 VSCs. (27) were completed by Lt/C Ronnie Babin S, (16) by D/Lt/C Al Furtado SN, (6) by P/C Ron Ziller SN and (2) by P/C Tom Nolan P. Remember the goal this year is to get 100% of our own squadron fleet to have VSCs! Please call Ronnie to get a free Vessel Safety Check on your vessel today (954) 232-3725.

P/C Denise Porter JN presented our emleg grant request for safe boating advertising to the Broward County Marine Advisory Board on March 3rd. Thankfully , we were granted approximately the same amount of funds as last year. This year we will expand our advertising to other media including internet and radio. Please thank Denise for her diligent efforts on the squadron’s behalf.

U.S. coast guard Auxiliary joint event - We have been invited by the Pompano Beach Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla to join them for a Picnic and VSc event on Sunday may 17 at the Alsdorf (boat ramp) Park at noon. The squadron will provide hot dogs and hamburgers for our group. Please bring a side dish or dessert to share. Please mark your calendar and let Denise know if you plan to attend.

Many of our members have returned North as we settle into our summer weather pattern. As I write this I can hear the afternoon thunder and see the darkening skies. Hopefully the rains will soon follow as the lawn is parched and in need of nourishment. For those of you here I hope to see you at the next dinner meeting and for those up North have a good summer. Thank you all for being members of the Pompano Beach Sail and Power Squadron. LT/C Tom Nolan SN, Squadron Executive Officer, Pompano Beach Sail and Power Squadron

Ken Crocker and I met with the electrician and we hope to have a final quote to present to the Bridge and approved at the next Executive Committee. This will a great enhancement to the building interior. This is a capital expense but if you amortize over 20 years it is quite reasonable.

My highest priority right now is to find an Assistant Administrative Officer, I am fortunate to have several current and previous Bridge Officers that will help me anytime I ask.

The most time consuming chore is overseeing the building maintenance and upkeep. Some things are on cruise control like cutting the grass and pest control and keeping the propane tank full for the kitchen. Other things like tree trimming, mulch, backflow inspection, waxing the floors etc. have to be scheduled.

The lighting upgrade will be a once in a lifetime event. Every 10 years the building needs to be painted. Just think of maintenance on your house and multiply it by 5.

The AO has to make sure the bar stays stocked. None of this is complicated but someone has to see that it gets done.

Vessel Safety checksIn addition to Tom Nolan’s report , I added nine more VSCs from Joe Caraccia. We are in the hunt to be #1 in D8. If you are a member of PBPS and have a boat what are you waiting for?

Boating and extra ActivitiesThirsty Thursday is suspended until the Fall. Jon Bensman our new D8 Commander wants to have a D8 Rendezvous somewhere in the upper Keys, date and location TBD.

Practical on The water Training This is an eight hour seminar with the perfect combination of class-room training and hands-on On-The-Water training. It provides an explanation of how your boat handles and why. Video clips let you visualize the maneuvers prior to your experiencing them on the water. It covers use of lines, departing the dock, operating in a fairway, piv-oting, mooring, backing, docking, steering - slalom, holding course - range, and a quick stop. Each student receives a copy of Powerboat

Handling Illustrated, a DVD, a Student Manual, and a certificate acknowledging his/her training.

Practical on the water Training SeminarThe Squadron is offering the Practical On the Water Training Seminar on the weekend of May 16. The classroom sessions are normally held on Saturday mornings followed by the on the water training Saturday afternoon and all day Sunday as required by the number of students enrolled.

The course involves one 3.5 hour classroom session before going on the water for practi-cal training and 1 hour review session after the on the water training. This can be com-pleted in approximately 8 hours. The cost of this course including the Student manual, DVD video and Powerboat Handling book, is $200 per student for uSPS members. For non-member students the cost is $250. For family members and partners that can and choose to share the course manuals and DVD the cost will drop by $100 so that the total for partners is $300 for members or $400 for non-members.

The training is geared toward the new boater learn-ing to operate a single engine boat in the 16 to 26 foot length. It is also an excellent primer for those members who are seeking to obtain the Inland Navigator certification. The seminar can count for the skills portion of the IN certification.

Your 401kBorrowing From

Have you refinanced your home into oblivion? Tapped out every available money resource with a myriad of loans and credit cards? There is one last option: borrowing from your 401(k)..If you've never heard of this option, it's because until recently, it just wasn't done that frequently. But with the market still not fully recovered, and people desiring to cut their high interest debt, more folks are discovering this alternative lending source..

Pros:A 401(k) loan does not appear on your credit report. They are not reported to Experian, and do not become a part of your credit history.

The interest on these loans is some of the lowest out there.

You're paying yourself the interest, not some bank.• You'll get your money more quickly than if you were using another means of borrowing.

Since it's a loan, you will not be charged the 10 percent early withdrawal penalties plus income taxes you would have to pay if you withdrew the money.

You don't have to qualify for the loan through the usual long, painful credit approval process, because in effect, you are the lender.

No assets or collateral are needed to secure the loan.• .

...Since it's a loan, you will not be chargedthe 10 percent early withdrawl penalties

plus income taxes..

Cons:The biggest con is that you are forfeiting the accrued interest you would earn if your money stayed in the 401(k). Calculated over the long term, it can cost tens (even hundreds) of thousands of dollars in potential gain.

Unlike a home equity loan, the interest is not tax deductible.

Some plans do not allow contributions to the 401(k) for the period of the loan.

If you lose or quit your job, the loan is often due in full•

in 30-60 days (although some plans are open to renegotiating the terms of the loan. Find out before you sign the papers.).If you default on the loan, it is considered a withdrawal and you will owe a 10 percent penalty plus a hefty tax payment. So if you had borrowed $50,000 and couldn't pay it back, you would have to pay a $5,000

penalty and federal and state taxes that could take another $20,000 of the amount..To calculate the actual cost of borrowing from either source: for a home equity loan, ignoring up-front costs, the after-tax cost is the interest rate minus your tax savings (interest rate times 1 minus your tax rate).

dorIS’ dISk dATABy P/Lt/C Doris Garner, AP, Editor

My daughter, Betty, just celebrated her big “O” birthday, which is why I could not go to the D/8 Change of Watch. Our family has always been big on birthday celebrations. We had a really fun time as most of her friends are extroverts. Most are talented, and there is always music. Everybody joins in for the sing-alongs, except me. I never could carry a tune, and still cannot. I was even given singing lessons and managed to learn one song. I can still sing it, but no one wants to hear, “Keep Your Sunnyside up!” I always get a laugh when I call somebody and sing

Happy Birthday to them. It starts their day in a good mood.

The food was good and plentiful. My son-in-law is a very good cook, and I even ate one of his vegetable cas-seroles. We helped clean up and were among the last to leave. Betty’s Pastor came over and noticed Vickie and Janet Dean, so I introduced them, mentioning that Vickie travels with the Rock band, Bon Jovi, when they tour. He was very enthused, as he not only keeps up with Rock music, his son has his own Rock band. He had been playing hymns on his guitar before, and had put in a few that were pretty peppy.

If more members wrote up articles, I would not have room for my own data about my personal events. So sit down at your computer and type out a story of a trip or marina that you tried. We could use advice on places to go and things to do. We also could use some good tips on taking care of our boat or the best kind of food to take on a rendezvous. Anything to do with boating is always interesting to boaters. Fish stories are good, too.

When sending in an article, remember that the computer is not a typewriter and does not need you to press enter at the end of every line, as it is supposed to “wrap to the next line automatically.” Don’t worry that we may print your article with a grammar or spelling error, as my proofreader, Kay Baker, is marvelous at finding the tiniest error, etc. and will make your article sound good!

James McEntee may not be on the Bridge this year, but he is still working for us by taking many pictures and helping out on Thirsty Thursdays, among other things. He is a working member.

I really like the idea of having an interesting speaker at our dinner meetings. We used to have them at every meeting until a member had too much to drink one night and made a nasty scene.

Speaking of nasty scenes, the riots a few nights ago, were the worst I’ve ever seen in the united States. It did teach a lesson. Without the police doing their job, we would have chaos. That lesson was brought home to the residents of the area, when they saw the looting and burning of their neighborhood stores, autos and housing of the elderly. I really did not think much of the cops standing by while it was going on, but I can see why they did that. It brought home the point!

Really, the only hero was the mother who recognized her son doing the wrong thing, and went after him and made him go home. Not many people would do that. But she did, and gained national recognition for doing the right thing. Things have calmed down, but the biggest loss was the local stores and the Senior Housing Development, which left a lot of elderly, sickly people without work or housing. A good solution is to make the destroyers rebuild that housing development to find out what work is, and that you are responsible for your misconduct. Now, there’s a new concept!
