Brief History of the Uke

Developed in the 1800’s from the Portuguese Machete

Ingrained deep in Hawaiian culture because of monarchs

Popular Hawaiian music was heavily impacted by colonizers in the 18th century

European influences have impacted Hawaiian music heavily

A boom of tourism in the 1930’s resulted in hawaiian pop becoming popular in America

Language is closely tied to Hawaiian identity

As old as the Hawaiian people

A fusion of several Polynesian languages

Destruction of Language

In the mid to late 1800’s, only about 1% of the population spoke fluent Hawaiian

This is a result of the immersion in the english language brought on by European settlers, mainly from the UK

Massive Melting Pot of Races

2000 Census of the islands:

25% of the population considering themselves to have Native Hawaiian ancestry

58% is at least part Asian

39% having some white ancestry

Since 1984 public schools were created to immerse Children in the Hawaiian language

These schools are highly effective and are actively raising the percentage of fluent Hawaiian speakers

The traditional language is being revived by a new generation of young speakers

Official and Unofficial Language

Many immigrants from all over the world came to Hawaii in the early 1900’s for work

Hawaiian + English PidginPidgin - Slang combination of english and Hawaiian words to describe typical aspects of island life

Aloha Shirts

Originally created by a Chinese merchant in the early 1930’s in Honolulu

Began to fly off the shelves of a small store

Later became commercialized and are now the leading export of Hawaii

Many designs are based on native flowers, but some take inspiration from outside influence
