the maximum. They are simple to build and there's a large range.

Single Span - StandardFerring Nurseries Location: Worthing, West Sussex

A STANDARD tunnel put to maximum use. It gives economical coverage, good clearance for working, and is very easy

to self-erect. There's a large range of sizes - this one is 18 feet wide.

Multilink CBV Liss Forest Nurseries Location: Liss, Hampshire

.....

There is maximum usable space in this tall, straight-sided and clean looking structure - a Multilink CBV. The high

gutter valley gives excellent clearance and the vertical sides allow access on any side. The cross-bracing is standard

and is perfect for hanging baskets, irrigation or shade netting.

Page 4: Poly House

We have attempted to make these pages as informative as possible,

to give you all the information you need to select, cost and order a

Polyhouse from us. We suggest you continue reading onto the

following pages, which explain how our designs work for you and

the differences between our Euro, Standard and Multispan

ranges. If you have access to the internet, our website

www.polyhouses.com includes case studies which cover most of

our product range.

The perspective drawings on each page give an idea of scale and

illustrate the bracing layout and optional timber end frame arrange-

ment. We separate these from the main polyhouse to enable you to

source your own timber if so desired.

PlanningIn nearly all instances planning per-

mission needs to be obtained for these

types of building. We are happy to

supply drawings of the relevant poly-

houses showing the necessary dimen-

sions, on the understanding that the order will be confirmed with

ourselves on receipt of the necessary permissions. Our invest-

ment in a tailor made CAD drawing computer package enables us

to give you a very rapid response for this work.

DimensionsAll Polyhouses dimensions are quoted centre of foundation tubes

down the length of the building. Single span foundations tube

measurements are given as the outside dimension across the hoop

span at ground level. On multispans the inner span dimensions

given are centre of gutter to centre of gutter.

FoundationsWe recommend that all our Polyhouses be

anchored in concrete foundations. Actual base

sizes are covered in our instructions, but as a

guide you will need 1 cubic metre for every 10

foundation tubes. A 7m x 18m would therefore

need around 2 cubic metres. For larger projects

we would normally use ready-mix. A 20 Newton metre/GEN3 mix

should be ordered. A ready mix load is normally 6 cubic metres so

you will need to work fast! For larger sites we would suggest you

hire a mechanical auger with a 500mm bit. A tractor-mounted unit

with hydraulic lift is available from many plant hire companies.

Our designsAll Polyhouses use large diameter,

high tensile steel tube manufac-

tured by our UK steel suppliers to

Z35 specification. This means that

it has a much higher bending

resistance than standard mild steel tube and is therefore stronger in

use. The large diameters give additional strength for resistance to

wind and snow loads. Most foundation tubes have a 2mm plus wall

thickness. The foundation tubes are a key part of the Polyhouse and

it is vital to ensure maximum strength in this area. All tube is

galvanised inside and out for maximum corrosion prevention. In

normal conditions we have seen our Polyhouses exhibit little

serious corrosion, even after 20 years use.

Fordingbridge pioneered the use of

swaged joint systems in polyhouse

design and use this extensively

throughout our Polyhouses. A swage

is where the tube end is reduced in diameter for approximately

100mm along its length. This allows tubes to sleeve together giving

a low cost, extremely strong joint which is fast to assemble. The

foundation tubes to hoops, the hoops themselves and the ridge and

crossbraces use this swage system. All Polyhouses have corner

windbrace diagonals and most have an additional gable end roof

diagonal support.

 CladdingThe hoop circumference of each

Polyhouse is shown to calculate the

width of cladding required. The

cladding prices outlined on each page takes into account trenching

of the polythene or netting at the sides of the tunnel, unless a

ground level rail is used. If providing your own cladding, you must

add at least 0.75m (2ft 6ins) each side to trench into the ground,

or at least 0.3m (1ft) if cladding to a side rail.

Please note that anti-hot spot tape is included in the price of

polythene when ordered with a new Polyhouse framework.

VentilationOur Polyhouses are much better sealed than a conventional

glasshouse and therefore ventilation and air circulation are

important factors when choosing a particular Polyhouse.

Polyhouses.com offer a comprehensive range of options to add to

your choice of Polyhouse framework, to give you the ideal growing

environment for your crop. The Polyhouse steel framework kit

includes foundation tubes, hoops, ridge and bracing as well as all

necessary fittings including those for attaching timber end frames.

On Multispan Polyhouses gutters are also included.

Timber End FramesSingle span Polyhouses are available with

or without timber end frames, allowing

you the option of designing or supplying

your own end frame arrangement. The

standard frame supplied is as depicted

on the relevant model specification.

Claddings for PolyhousesPlease note we strongly recommend the use of anti hot-spot tape

between the steel tunnel frame and all claddings. To this end, this

tape is included in the price of the cladding option when

purchasing a new structure.

Anti hot-spot tape is a white polyester faced foam tape, backed

with an adhesive to fix it securely to the upper surface of the steel

hoops. The shiny polyester face has a low co-efficient of friction and

helps to reduce abrasion between the steel hoops and polythene

cover. The white surface of the tape reflects light and, with the foam

insulation, prevents heating of the film by the steel framework. The

use of foam tape can extend the life of these polythene films by at

least one year. It is important that anti hot spot tape is replaced

every second cladding, as the expected lifetime of the tape is 6-8

years.

To simplify cladding pricing we offer Standard or Advanced

Visqueen film. By special request we can supply XL film if

preferred. All these films come with a five year guarantee. Netting

is also offered as a tunnel cladding.

1 Standard Visqueen filml8Omu (720g) ultra violet inhibited films. These are available as

Clear film or White film for shade (Visqueen only). The standard

clear film has a light transmission of 89% and the White 70%. For

most salad crops and bedding plants we normally recommend Clear.

White is often ideal for Nursery Stock and other shade loving crops.

2 Advanced Visqueen filmPolitherm Plus l8Omu (720g) is used for its anti-condensate and

heat retentive properties. It has an anti-condensate inner layer,

which helps to prevent condensation. It has an infrared reflective

layer allowing the suns rays into the Polyhouse, but preventing heat

escape. It also saves energy if you are heating the building. Typically

an unheated Polyhouse using Politherm will be 3 degrees centi-

grade warmer than one with standard film. This film is good for

crops where early yield is important and where there is influence by

direct light levels and temperatures.

Luminance THB AF 200mu (800g)is used for its anti-condensate

and high diffusion properties plus its ability to reduce proportion of

short wave length infra red light. These features help reduce scorch-

ing, reduce maximum temperatures in sunny weather and increase

light to the plant due to its high levels of diffuse light. It has proved

to be particularly effective for ornamentals and hardy nursery stock.

3 Netting sheets for PolyhousesThese can be made from various types of net, monofilament or

tape. Both of these are generally green in colour but black can also

be available. These sheets are sewn to size as required.

Other commonly used coverings:

XL PolytheneAlternative to Visqueen films, XL offer a complete range of poly-

thene to suit your growing requirements, and incorporate tech-

nologies to increase the strength of their films as well as offering all

the features and benefits of other polythene films.

Nicotarp This woven polythene fabric with its distinctive striped pattern

which is generally green and white, is often used over display type

areas where fire retardant fabrics are not required. The light

transmission value is around 48% and therefore not suitable for

growing under. However the look and feel of buildings clad with

this material gives an excellent retail atmosphere.

Further details on cladding types can be seen on our sister website:

VentilationVentilation is vital for growth, disease control,

and for nursery stock and bedding plant

hardiness and Polyhouses.com offer a wide

choice of options. Side ventilation requires the

fitting of either a timber or aluminium mid rail. Prices are shown as

an option with each Polyhouse on the relevant page.

Timber rails are a low cost, simple system, easy to use, although

slightly more time consuming to reuse. The edge of the film is

wrapped around a batten which is then nailed to a timber rail

bolted to the polyhouse frame.

Aluminium rails are an extruded grip rail cladding system for

secure flexible sheeting. A base extrusion is secured to the structure

framework and the cladding film stretched over it. The extruded

aluminium infill section is then inserted into the base securing the

film between the two components. Grip Rail is extremely versatile

and can be used with a wide range of different film thicknesses,

simply using a different infill to match the cladding material used.

These mid rails come complete with rail for each side of

the relevant structure including a minimum 1.2m (4ft) return at

each end. Fittings for fixing to the steel framework are also

included. The height of these vents is dependant on the hoop

profile, though on Euro Polyhouses this would normally be around

1.2m (4ft).

Roll Up Side Vents were introduced

by Fordingbridge more than 20 years

ago and immediately won two major

innovation awards. The system works

by the film being wound around a

tube, which is normally turned

manually by a small gearbox unit. It can also, in certain situations,

be electrically operated. It is a very clean, neat system and can work

on a curved side if required. The unit when manually wound

normally operates from within the Polyhouse. These vents can be

retro-fitted to any Polyhouse if required. The polythene is kept taut

at all times and gives a very neat finish.

Lift Up Side Vents are available as a non-standard option on

certain Polyhouses. The advantage of lift up vents is that the vent

opens at the top first. This system can, however, only work

efficiently on vertical sides. The system

draws a blind of polythene from the

ground level timber rail to the side rail.

A leading edge tube is inserted in the

hem of the sheet. The tube is raised

and lowered by a system of wire and

polyester ropes running over nylon

pulleys. As with the roll up vent, the blind is normally sandwiched

between netting and the hoops to prevent wind damage to the film

when in use. Typically the lift up system is 30% more expensive

than the roll up system.

Gable End VentsApart from using doorway apertures, the larger Polyhouses can

benefit from our effective butterfly vents. These can be arranged at

high level, or low level either side of the doorways in most

Polyhouses. Gable end vents have a simple spring loaded 3-position

hinge stay for variable ventilation rates. Panels are joinery made

from pressure treated timber. Other permutations may be possible

on certain Polyhouses. Do not forget that our roll up sides can be

used on gable ends of multispans if there are not too many door

apertures.

Ground RailsPolyhouses.com offers a range of

aluminium and timber ground rail

kits. These can generally be fitted

to any make of tunnel provided the

foundation tubes are concreted in

the ground and the hoop is fixed to

the foundation tube.

Aluminium box ground rails are a quick and easy system for

fixing sheets that cannot be buried in the ground, though a little

bit of practice is useful beforehand. Kits comprise aluminium

extrusions for clamping to the tunnel frame, fixing bolts and infills.

Timber ground rails are a cheaper alternative and are essential to

secure a lift-up side vent. Kits comprise 75mm x 50mm timbers for

clamping to the tunnel frame, fixing bolts and battens.

All kits include the necessary components for both sides of a

structure. Individual kits and spares are available from our sister site:

CrossbracingThis is available as an optional extra (although some Polyhouses

include it as standard); it is a horizontal and vertical bracing

arrangement across the span of a hoop. It can increase the

resistance to snow and wind loadings particularly in exposed

positions and can in some instances be used as a ‘crop support’

for the hanging of baskets/containers and irrigation lines.

DoorsFor smaller tunnels many customers will make simple end flaps

using their own timber and the polythene supplied with the

structure. We can supply joinery made timber doors, either single

or double, low cost hinged, or sliding.

The smaller tunnels (up to 18ft /5.5m wide) can normally only

fit hinged doors because of the lack of width for sliding. For

these smaller tunnels the standard door panels are 2m high

and approximately 1.2m wide. For tunnels 21ft and wider, the

doors are 2.1m high.

For high specification structures and where timber is considered

undesirable we can supply aluminium framed sliding doors, clad

with flexible film or rigid polycarbonate, both with an aluminium

base panel.

All door kits come complete with all parts required, hinges, screws,

handles, and on sliding doors our extruded aluminium top track

and steel base rail.

Please note that door kits do not include timber end frames.

Suitable door and louvre options are given on the individual

polyhouse pages.

Polyhouses.com is committed to ensure the Health, Safety and

Welfare of everyone involved in the building and recladding of our

Polyhouse structures.

It is our policy to implement all means possible to achieve this com-

mitment and therefore ongoing research is being done within the

company to design out the risks so far as is reasonably practicable.

Historically, polyhouses have always been built without much

attention to the risks of falls from height. The Health and Safety

Executive and Polyhouses.com are taking a keen and proactive

interest in establishing safe systems of work for these tasks.

Single Span Polyhouses should be relatively easy to build and clad

without any special equipment.

Height access equipment may be needed on higher sided poly-

tunnels and therefore risk assessments by a competent person

should be carried out and control measures put into place where

necessary.

“Walking the Gutters” will not be necessary as access to both sides

of the polytunnel can usually be achieved by working from ground

level and therefore the polythene sheet can be pulled over the

framework safely.

Twin and Multispan Polyhouses require far more safety measures

to be implemented to ensure the safety of personnel.

The highest risk of falls from height on these polyhouses is when

operatives are gaining access to, walking in and working from the

valley gutters. These hazards cannot be eliminated so the only

viable safe system of working in the gutter is to fix safety nets to the

structure either side of the valley gutter to prevent anyone falling

to the ground.

It has been established that the most efficient layout of the nets is

to have one either side of the valley gutter fixed to each stanchion

at the gutter and tied off in an upward direction to the ridge bar to

maintain an incline of the nets.

If cladding/re-cladding a twinspan polytunnel, two nets will be used

as shown below.

If building or refurbishing a multispan structure then a minimum of

four nets will be required. When the first two spans have been

successfully clad the two nets can be moved to the next

unprotected valley gutter.

Under no circumstances should walking the gutter of a clad

framework without netting underneath be deemed as a safe work-

ing platform.

Old polythene due to age and ultra violet breakdown becomes very

brittle and will not sustain the load of someone falling against it.

Similarly new polythene may seem strong enough but if pierced a

tear line will form if a load is applied.

These structures have fragile roofs and any access for

maintenance or repair must be carefully risk assessed and

work carried out by trained and competent people.

polyhouses, please contact us using the details given below.

 The Single Span Range

Euro PolyhousesFor the customer where side clearance is vital for access or

ventilation. Superb design has allowed us to manufacture the

complete range with identical outer hoop profiles, giving us

manufacturing economies and reflecting the savings back to the

grower. All hoops are completely vertical for the first 1000mm (3ft

3ins) from ground level. This gives the best possible clearance for

access or for plants. It assists ventilation where side rails set at up to

1200mm (4ft) do not cause rain to drip into the structure. All poly-

houses, with the exception of the 5m Span, use 60mm Z35 high

tensile steel tube, galvanised inside and outside for maximum

corrosion prevention.

Standard PolyhousesThese are very low cost, yet high quality structure frames using

large diameter Z35 tube, all with single ridge and all set on swaged

foundation tubes. This arrangement means the polyhouses are fast

to build and have a very secure anchorage to the ground. They all

have excellent side clearance and ‘shoulder room’. These Poly-

houses have a lower height profile which can be an advantage for

planning permission purposes.

The Multispan RangeFordingbridge have manufactured a wide range of multispan

Polyhouses for over 30 years. The range is now the largest

available, from low cost twinspans to the highest specification

multispans.

The Multilink is a cost-effective high specification structure

but with aluminium gutters and lintels which incorporate

Fordingbridge grip rail. Multilink structures are available in both

21ft (6.4m) spans and 26ft (7.9m) spans in width and 8ft (2.44m)

section in length. Optional crossbraces allow crop support or

mounting for irrigation or hanging baskets if required.

The Multilink CBV range also has aluminium gutters with

grip rail cladding systems. They have completely vertical sides to

the gutter height of 8ft (2.44m). Eave gutters are included on all

Multilink CBV polyhouses. Crossbraces for crop support are

included as standard. Timber is completely eliminated from this

structure with extensive use of steel and aluminium for side rails

and end frames.
