    Westenburg land invasion kicks off

Bad blood among taxi kingsFrom page 1the feared assassinations. In an interview with Polokwane Observer, a local taxi owner shared details of an industry often bogged down by perceptions of raging rivalry and habitual dangerous driving. He hinted at a dangerous Catch 22 on Limpopos roads, given impetus by examples of illegal opera-tors hell-bent on profit-making and seemingly willing to pay bribes to alleged corrupt traffic cops apparently believed to accumulate ad-ditional income by bribing law-breakers.

Initially he turned to Polokwane Ob-server with information about suspicious conduct attributed to traffic officials impound-ing his vehicle at a roadblock en route to Nobody last Thursday, despite his driver being in possession of a temporary permit or operating licence valid until 5 May 2015. It had cost him R5 000 to get his vehicle back and R1 500 in a fine imposed on his driver for failing to produce a valid operating licence, he emphasised. The source provided a copy of

    PHOTO: HERBERT RACHUENE

Premier Stan Mathaba-tha and Members of his Executive Council toured the nearly completed Polokwane High Court facility yesterday (Wednesday). The of-ficial opening is planned for 15 May.

From page 1entrance of Westenburg from the Matlala Road on Tuesday, a large crowd of prospective home owners were gathered on the site where five shacks were already built. Martha Verveen, who claims to be an EFF member, was busy compil-ing a list of names and telephone numbers of people to be allocated stands. Further on an-other lady was reading out the names of people that registered on Monday, requesting them not to register again.

According to a source on site, Jossey Buthane, Provincial Secretary of the EFF, addressed the crowd just after lunch on Tuesday. Polokwane Observer recently reported that EFF Secretary General, Godrich Gardee, in an exclusive interview confirmed that the EFF will support landless communi-ties as and when they occupied unused land.

When you identify unoccupied land, unused land, land lying fallow for over a long time and then we have landless people who are staying in residential areas like rats and animals. Then they must go and occupy that unoccupied land, unused land, he said.

Ezekiel Adams, a resident of Westenburg, told Polokwane Observer that he does not

want the EFF there. Owen Kemp, a resident from New Pietersburg, said that he supports the EFF and wants a home. The ANC has given me nothing and I want a job as well, he said.

Percy Adams does not support the land invasion and says that there are legal ways to obtain a home.

The EFF gave people the right to grab the land and we do not want them here, he reckons.

Daniel Nelson wants to live near Westen-burg because of the safety of the area and the proximity of schools and public amenities such as a police station.

Tidimalo Chuene, Communications and Marketing Manager of the municipality, com-mented as follows: The municipality is aware of the unauthorised land occupation that has been taking place at Extension 40, along the Matlala road near Westernburg. Stakeholder engagements and consultations are underway towards an amicable solution to the issue. The municipality will issue a statement as soon as all the immediate legal and relevant land use related processes are satisfied.

Buthane could not be reached for com-ment at time of going to print.

a temporary licence, seemingly issued by the Capricorn District Office of the Department of Transport in Lebowakgomo.

According to him he had initially bought an operating licence for R10 000 from someone in 2009, having to go to Lebowakgomo every three months to obtain a temporary permit or operating licence free of charge thereafther. All along he had been informed that only temporary operating licences and no per-manent permits were being issued, he said. Despite possessing a temporary operating licence valid until 5 May 2015, his vehicle got impounded, he complained.

He was informed that his driver was sup-posed to have been in possession of a perma-nent operating licence, the source explained. It was learnt that he was indeed issued with a permanent document last week.

The taxi owner ascribed the conduct to rivals, within the regulating taxi association he belonged to, calling in favours from their friends in the Department of Transport to get the vehicles of their opponents off the road. He explained he was part of a team that drove out officials of their taxi associa-tion allegedly in cahoots with unregistered taxi operators with a campaign banning them from their area last year. Currently close to 500 registered taxis were operating on the line, whereas they managed to get rid of 70 unregistered vehicles on the road with the campaign. He expressed the belief that taxi operators on the team were mainly being targeted.

He continued sharing insight of what he called a bad industry, made worse by money-hungry office workers who could afford to own taxis but robbed operators who solely depended on it for a source of income. He described it as a very tough industry, conced-ing to the fact that taxi drivers have a foul reputation, providing the reason that they were competing for passengers. Its all about the money. When their taxis are full they dont drive as if the world is coming to an end, it was learnt.

He further confirmed what is generally perceived an open secret. Traffic cops love taxi drivers, because they get their daily bread from them. An ill-natured traffic official could easily pocket R1 000 a day from solicit-ing R100 bribes from taxi drivers, who paid to avoid a fine, according to the source.

Transport Department Spokesperson Kagi-so Mootane commented by saying an internal investigation had been launched into allega-tions of licences being issued fraudulently at the departmental Capricorn District Office in Lebowakgomo after complaints received the past few weeks. After the allegations had been brought to the departments attention, the decision was taken to issue permanent operating licences, she added.

Addressing the allegations around the impoundment of the taxi owners vehicle at the roadblock, she raised the opinion that if a vehicle had been impounded it was due to the driver operating with a fraudulent licence or on the wrong route.

She was of the opinion that taxi opera-tors had to be briefed on changes in legisla-tion by their respective associations. She agreed that it was expected that operators in the Mankweng area might not have been informed about the conversion in licences due to the ongoing battle within the association, as alleged by the source.

To the sweeping statement of alleged bribery by traffic cops, she said members of the public should report such offences to the toll-free hotline number 0800 00 66 94.

Nirvana residents and other protesters made their feel-ings towards murder accused, Rameez Patel clear during the court proceedings on Tuesday. Patel is suspected of fatally shooting his wife, Fatima on 10 April.

Residents were adamant that Patel be given bail in order for him to be dealt with by the community. Oth-ers suggested that rotting in jail may be the best sentence for him. Joining them at court were members of the African National Congress Womens League (ANCWL), ANC Youth League (Ancyl), Young Communist League of South Africa (YCLSA) and members of Congress of South African Stu-dents (Cosas).

Ancyl Provincial Spokesperson On-icca Moloi prior to the hearing said: We oppose any form of violence against women and children. We want to mobilise young people to rise up and ensure that our society is free of gender based violence. This is our own Oscar Pistorius case and it is a

pure example of what some women are exposed to, Moloi said.

Because of the interest in the case it was supposed to be heard first thing in the morning but when the case only started after 11:00, state prosecutor Mark von Dronik argued that he was not prepared for the case as he was only handed the docket about an hour before the proceedings commenced.

Defence attorney Stefanie Fourie said her client was arrested six days after the incident and first appeared in court on 17 April. The state had six days to prepare for the bail application. My client is getting frustrated. His three children already have to grow up without a mother and now their father is also absent, she argued.

Magistrate Mohamed Shaik gave the state until 14:00 on the day to prepare for the bail application. To this instruction Von Dronik argued that Shaik might be biased in his decision because of possible relations with the two families. Shaik made it clear that even though he became emotional during Patels first court appearance,

his decision and judgement will not be affected by his emotions. Shaik clari-fied that the case evoked events in his childhood which caused his emotions. I am human. I also cry when I watch movies. If you pinch me, I hurt too. I am human, Shaik said and ruled that the state is not able to prove that the courts decision will be partial. Fourie also confirmed that neither Rameez nor his deceased wife knew Shaik.

Patels affidavit was read to the court by Fourie who clearly indicated that Patel has no reason to flee and that he has no previous or pending cases against him. The state wanted to call the investigating officer to the stand but indicated that the court would not be able to complete the bail application before end of day.

Shaik asked for a meeting with council in the judges chamber. Court then proceeded and he ruled the case to be postponed to 4 May in order for the state to produce evidence. Patel remains in custody. Shaik warned that court will start on time and 7 May was also reserved should they also not complete the bail application on the day.

While a crammed courtroom listened to pro-ceedings in the case against Rameez Patel who is accused of shooting his wife on 10 April, elsewhere in the same building three of six suspects allegedly involved in one of South Africas biggest crime syndicates yet, appeared for their alleged involvement in two recent armed robberies at fuel stations in the city.

First accused and possibly the mastermind behind the syndicate, Kleintjie Bapela and co-accused Thabelo Mokwena and Jan Matjila are described as very dangerous and will ap-pear in court again on 8 May facing charges of armed robbery and ATM bombing.

Bapelas attorney, Frik Swart told Polo-kwane Observer that the six men are alleg-edly part of a bigger syndicate responsible for various armed robberies and ATM bombings across the country. They have pending cases which vary from armed robbery, ATM bombing, motor vehicle theft, house breaking and business robbery against them. These cases are reported in Mafikeng, Mokopane, Polokwane (3) and Gauteng (4), Swart said, adding that Bapela might become a state witness as Police confirmed that he has cooperated well since his arrest.

Fuel station robbery suspects linked to more cases

Polokwane awakened to the news of an two armed robberies and ATM bombings at fuel stations in the city on 20 April when six armed men in a BMW got away with undisclosed amounts of money in each incident.

Provincial Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola straightway ordered the establishment of a task team to han-dle the case. The task team gathered information and the investigation started with a massive manhunt for the six suspects, Provincial Police Spokesperson Ronel Otto said.

Within 72 hours Police were hot on their trail and succeeded in the arrest of the trio in Pretoria. Police confiscated the BMW al-legedly used as getaway vehicle,

seven firearms which include four pistols and three rifles and cash. Swart said R59 000 in cash was found in the BMW. The search for the remaining three is still on.

    >> Finalise the process by the end of the month>> Limpopo maintains a death free initiation seasonHERBERT RACHUENE>>[email protected]

Everything is on track for the registration of initiation schools for the provinces 2015 koma House of Traditional Lead-ers Chairperson Malesela Dikgale last week informed that they are on track to approve applications received from various traditional leaders.

The application process closed on 30 March. We received a satisfactory number of applications from all the districts. We are unable to quantify the figure now, but it is sufficient and we hope to finalise the process by the end of this month, Dikgale said.

Last year the house approved 275 out of 311 applications and issued 75 permits of approval to the respective traditional authori-ties.

The house earlier this year conducted a

workshop for all senior traditional leaders who qualify for initia-tion schools permits. According to Dikgale the purpose of the workshop was to brief and prepare the initia-tion schools stakehold-ers and participants on precautionary meas-ures to be followed in order to ensure a smooth process during the initiation period. The workshop also aimed at ensuring that Limpopo maintains a death free initia-tion season, he said. Dikgale urged parents to verify the legitimacy of initiation schools with their respective traditional authorities before they send their children there.

There will be zero tolerance towards persons who want to take chances by run-ning initiation schools without permits, he warned.

More arrests are likely to follow after two persons were apprehended last Friday by Police in Maake in connection with business robbery, housebreaking and theft.

According to Tzaneen Police Spokesper-son, Moatshe Ngoepe a joint operation be-tween the Polices Tactical Response Team, members of the Tzaneen Cluster, Crime Prevention and Detective Unit resulted in the arrest of two suspects at Tickyline and Gabaza villages respectively. Police recov-ered a R5 assault rifle and ammunition as

well as a magazine, TV sets, radio speakers, crockery, shoes, blankets and radios, ac-cording to Ngoepe. The men are respec-tively 30 and 40 years old. Ngoepe could not provide information as to whether they have already appeared in court or not.

The arrests came after a business was robbed last Wednesday at Gabaza Vil-lage. The two suspects allegedly entered a shop, held the owner at gunpoint and stole cash, airtime and cigarettes, according to Ngoepe.

Further investigation might link the two men to more cases of robbery, house breaking and theft.

    >> Expression of shock at dilapidation witnessed as state-of-the-art school is vandalised>> Department of Education blamed for not having house in orderYOLANDE NEL>>[email protected]

Three and a half years after world class Leba-ka B Primary School in Mohlabaneng Village in the Ga-Sekgopo area en route to Giyani was supposedly completed, it has seemingly fallen victim to vandals. And so R16 million in taxpayers monies have allegedly gone down the drain.

The state of affairs was brought to Polo-kwane Observers attention by Democratic Alliance (DA) Parliamentarian and Deputy Provincial Chairperson Solly Malatsi who recently conducted an oversight visit to the institution. He afterwards expressed shock at the dilapidation witnessed as a state-of-the-art school was being vandalised. The oversight visit revealed that the furniture, the fittings and the actual structure had been damaged, stolen and tampered with, he indicated.

According to Malatsi it seemed as if construction of the entire facility had been completed and the administration block and classrooms furnished. He referred to a dispute between the contractor and department hav-ing an impact on the opening of the facility.

From a photo of a signpost on the prem-ises it is clear that the contract period for the project ran from 3 November 2010 to 3 October 2011.

Calling it a disgrace, Malatsi said the Depart-ment of Education should be embarrassed by the fact that there were schools that remained unoccupied and vandalised simply because the department hadnt got its house in order. It shows yet another classic example of mismanagement of education by the African National Congress (ANC) government in Limpopo.

Malatsi called on the acting MEC for Edu-cation, Jerry Ndou to take immediate action to ensure the facility, built to cater for an initial overflow at Lebaka A Primary School on the other side of the village, would be ready for use by the community at the start of the last school quarter.

Several attempts to obtain comment from the spokesperson for the Department of Education were unsuccessful.

The flu virus spreads through droplets when infected people talk, cough or sneeze, and these are inhaled by others. Droplets that have landed on surfaces are transmitted when people touch these surfaces and then their mouths, noses or eyes.

The patient is usually contagious one day before showing symptoms and up to seven days after the first symptoms started.

Most South African medical aid schemes have sent out warnings to their members, warning them about the dangers of flu and recommending flu vaccines.

Several different strains of flu viruses are in circulation each year. To protect people

from infection, the National Institute of Allergy and Infec-tious Diseases labo-ratories in the US continually update and develop new vaccines.

The flu vaccine contains antigens that help the body develop antibodies to protect it against the flu virus. It is effective from 10 to 14 days after vac-cination.

Polokwane Observer spoke to local physician Paul Vorster from Redimed about the flu vaccine. He said it is advisable to get this vaccination at the beginning of the year, but that it is

never too late to be vaccinated. It is better to be vaccinated later in the

flu season, than not at all, was his advice. Influenza is a dangerous disease and can

lead to serious complications and even death. Although many people fear that the flu

vaccine could actually make them sick, Vorster reassures sceptics that this is not pos-sible. Flu viruses used in shots are inactive and cannot cause infection. Patients may experience some symptoms, but only on rare occasions, he says.

Vorster says that, although the flu vaccine cannot offer 100% protection against all types of flu, the patient will definitely benefit.

In a press statement the NCID also stresses this point, saying that even when vaccinated people do contract the flu, they will present with less severe symptoms and fewer complications.

Vorster further explains that healthy peo-ple need only be vaccinated once every year, as early as possible, but high risk patients may need two per year. He says it is up to the individuals physician to decide how many shots are needed for optimum protection.

The World Health Organisation (Who) warned that South Africans must prepare for a particularly vicious flu season with several serious strains of this virus making the rounds. During the recent flu season in the Northern Hemisphere, this years flu shot was only 23% effective. Vorster says that no guarantee can be given that the vaccine will protect a person, but reiterates that it is bet-ter to have some protection than none at all.

Recent national news reports warned that people should make sure that they receive the most recent flu vaccine, because it var-ies from year to year. Vorster says patients should check the packaging of the vaccine to see if it was manufactured in 2015.

A flu shot could save your life this winter

People often confuse the com-mon cold with the flu. There are many differences between these two illnesses. The NCID makes the following distinctions.

Cause: The rhinovirus is responsible for 50% of colds, while any one of five other viruses can be responsible for the rest. The flu is caused by the influenza virus, with Type A influenza viruses responsible for most epidemics.

Fever: High temperatures and fevers are rare in patients with a cold, but a common symptom of the flu.

Congestion: A cold tends to affect the upper respiratory system with severe nasal congestion and a lot of

sneezing. Congestion is rare in flu patients.

Muscle aches:Patients who suffer from a cold do not suffer from muscle aches, but patients with the flu often experience severe muscle aches.

Onset: A cold takes a few days to develop from that familiar and dreaded tickle in the throat to a full-blown cold. The onset of flu symptoms is so quick that some patients can pinpoint the specific hour when they started to feel ill.

Duration:A cold will clear up within two to four days, while flu symp-toms like coughing and fatigue can last up to three weeks.

    MARKI FRANKEN>>[email protected]

For many people winter is synonymous with influenza or flu, a time when any cough or ache could lead to weeks of misery and suffering.

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NCID) describes flu as an acute viral respiratory infection, transmitted by the influenza virus of which there are many strains. The flu viruses are typically in circula-tion in the winter months in South Africa with an average start in the first week of June, although this varies.

    >> Man linked to 37 cases of rape>> Xenophobic attacks closer to homeRC MYBURGH>>[email protected]

Limpopo Police were out in full force since the start of the long weekend and made several arrests which include eight people allegedly responsible for xenophobic attacks in Thabazimbi and another eight in connection with rhino poaching.

Police also managed to apprehend three suspects in connection with the recent fuel station robberies. See story elsewhere.

Cycler killed by giraffePolice in Bela-Bela are investigating the death of a man who was allegedly killed by a giraffe while he was cycling at the Thaba Monate Game Lodge on Sunday. Accord-ing to Provincial Police Spokesperson Ronel Otto hikers discovered the body of the cyclist and a post mortem will be conducted during the week to determine the cause of his death. The deceased is from Nigel, Gauteng.

Looting of foreign-owned shopsEight people allegedly responsible for the looting of foreign-owned shops in Thaba-zimbi on Monday evening were expected to appear in the Thabazimbi Magistrates Court yesterday (Wednesday). Violence erupted on Monday at around 23:00 when four foreign-owned shops were broken into, looted and one was set on fire. Public order policing unit

was deployed to the area to monitor the situ-ation, Otto said.

Unrest at MedupiOn Tuesday Police were called out to Medupi power station near Lephalale where some workers allegedly attempted to block the road. Otto denied previous reports of striking Medupi workers. We cannot confirm that they were striking, but there were allegations of people attempting to block the road. Police were deployed to the scene to monitor the situation. No arrests were made, Otto said.

Up for 37 cases of rape Meanwhile DNA tests positively linked a 23-year-old man from Bolobedu with 37 cases of rape in the Bolobedu area. The man was arrested in May last year when he broke into the house of his last victim, which he reportedly overpowered and raped. The victim screamed during the ordeal causing her father to wake up. The suspect fled but the victims father gave chase and shot him in the leg, Otto said.

He is expected to appear in the Tzaneen Magistrates Court again today (Thursday).

Rhino poachers apprehendedEight suspected rhino poachers were also apprehended in separate incidents within the area of Groblers Bridge and Kruger National Park (KNP).

In the first incident two suspects were ar-rested at Groblersbrug border post while try-ing to sell rhino horn as well as six diamonds. The two, from Zimbabwe and Botswana respectively, are expected to appear in the Mokopane Magistrates Court on Tuesday. The origin of the items is still being investigated.

At Lulekani just outside Phalaborwa, Sam-uel Mabunda, Climate Mathebula, Chester Malungane and Eric Mandlazi were arrested

Police make several breakthroughs across Limpopo

and four hunting rifles, ammunition, axes, knives, cellphones and cash were confiscated. They are expected to appear in the Phalabor-wa Magistrates Court today (Thursday).

At KNP close to the Phalaborwa gate two suspects were arrested after being spotted by visitors to the park. Visitors reported two suspicious men crossing a tar road in the park to rangers of the park. The information was immediately followed up and resulted

in the arrest of the two men. A .458 hunting rifle, ammunition, a knife, two cell phones and four rhino horns were confiscated. They were expected to appear in the Phalaborwa Magistrates Court on Tuesday, Otto said.

Provincial Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola applauded all members in the different units for their hard work, dedication and commitment to bring the suspects to book.

Premier Stan Mathabatha paid homage and extended his heartfelt gratitude to all who put their weight behind the struggle for free-dom and democracy while he addressed this years provincial Freedom Day Celebrations at Moroke Village in Sekhukhune on Monday.

To all of them we commit ourselves to never take this freedom for granted. We will always remember that this freedom is pillared on their sweat, blood and relentless sacri-fices. Today we celebrate because we know the pain of oppression and dominance of one racial group over the other. We truly come from a hopeless and painful past. Apartheid divided our country into two equal parts, he remarked.

He stated that the province was much bet-ter than 21 years ago. Over the past years our government has ensured that over 96% of learners in our province benefit from the No-Fee School Policy. Today in excess of 96% of learners in quintiles 1, 2 and 3, benefit from the National School Nutrition Pro-

gramme. The government is providing about 20 000 learners with scholar transport. These are some of the many interven-tions that have led to an increase in

our matric pass rate from 38% in 1994 to

over 72% in 2014, Mathabatha said

Against the backdrop of xenophobic at-tacks which have riddled the country over the past weeks Mathabatha commended the provinces citizens for the exemplary man-ner in which they have lived and continue to live side by side with the many foreign nationals within its borders. Our province as gateway to Africa is home to thousands of Zimbabweans, Botswana, Mozambicans, Zambians and a host of other foreign nation-als. The economies of most of our towns and villages owe their growth and development to the contribution of foreign nationals. We have teachers in our schools that are from these countries. I must also take an opportu-nity to salute the various stakeholders in our province who recently organised rallies and demonstrations against xenophobic tenden-cies, Mathabatha said.

    >> Further MOA with bus operators and other associations to follow>> Affected operators the determinants of the success of the systemBARRY VILJOEN >>[email protected]

Polokwane Municipality took a leap towards the realisation of its Integrated Rapid Public Transport System (IRPTS) when a memorandum of agreement (MOA) between the municipality and taxi associations was signed at Bolivia Lodge, last Thursday.

The MOA is related to phases 1a, 1 and 2 of the IRPTS and was signed with the Flora Park, Moletjie, Seshego-Polokwane and Westenburg Taxi associations.

At the signing ceremony, Execu-tive Mayor Thembi Nkadimeng, said that the IRPTS is aimed at chang-ing the ordinary lives of the citizens and the economy of the City. It is through its implementation that the affected transport operators will be economically empowered and, more

importantly, transport users will enjoy travelling in a system that is safe, reliable, convenient and affordable. A separate agreement will in due course be entered into with the phase 1a, 1 and 2 bus operators and other affected taxi and bus operators will be incorporated into the system as it unfolds.

Nkadimeng added that the munici-pality views the affected operators as the determinants of the success of the system and that it is the respon-sibility of the municipality and taxi as-sociations leadership to ensure that they are in the loop of the progress that is made to implement the pro-ject. I am saying this because when decisions are made, as an operator your economic rights are affected. I encourage you to partake in meet-

ings called by the municipality or your associations on issues relating to this programme as your inputs will shape your economic benefits, Nkadimeng assured the guests.

I hope that you share my excite-ment and enthusiasm for the road ahead as I am convinced that we now have a realistic and achievable goal for introduction of a visible service. I would like to leave you with the following quotation from Thomas Jefferson: Nothing can stop a man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude. We hope to be a collective with the right mental attitude and nothing will stop us from achieving our goal today, she concluded.

Members of South African Teachers Union (Sadtu) In Limpopo presented a memo-randum of demands to Premier Stan Mathabatha on Tuesday after they failed in their efforts to agree on certain issues with acting MEC of Education, Jerry Ndou last year December.

Among the issues stipulated in the memorandum is the unilateral downward variation of the conditions of services of Adult Education Training (AET) in the province resulting to their salaries being down-graded from R6 000 to R1 400 a month from 1 September 2014.

Further issues are the non-filling of vacant and funded promotional posts by the department; failure by the department to provide a clear cut infrastructure plan to deal with old and dilapidated buildings, which have become a health and security hazard to learners and educators, and the inability of the Premier to appoint the MEC of Education.

Sadtu Provincial Secre-tary, Matome Raphasha said they decided to present their demands to the Premier after they could not be assisted by Ndou. We have had these prob-lems for a while now and the MEC is aware of them. We are particularly disturbed by the nonchalant and lackadaisical at-titude displayed by his office in trying to find solutions to these important challenges that

has a potential of collaps-ing system in the province. We therefore demand an immediate end to the Mafia deductions of AET educators salaries which must reinstat-ed to what they were getting as of the 1 September 2014. The immediate revocation of the imposed new conditions of service of AET educa-tors pending consultations with unions admitted to the provincial chamber, Rapha-sha said.

He also added that, in the recent past, they have noted a number of developments from the department that affect ad-versely conditions of service of their members and education provisioning in the province. We had on numerous occa-sions tried to draw his offices attention towards resolving these issues but our pleas fell on deaf ears, continued Raphasha.

In response Mathabatha said they will attend the issues in the memorandum. I dont want to make empty promises that all the issues raised in the memorandum will be solved urgently. Some of them are legacy issues but we will give them the necessary attention, Mathabatha said.

The ruling party in Limpopo stands to lose several votes in next years local government elections after disgruntled residents of Extension 109 outside Polokwane recently turned to the Democratic Alliance (DA) for assistance with per-manent relocation and service delivery issues.

According to a representa-tive of the community within the fence bordering with Extension 106, the DA had been ap-proached on assistance in ad-dressing the plight of 27 families within the confined space. The spokesman on behalf of the group claimed they hadnt received the required assistance from the

African National Congress (ANC) since being relocated there from Disteneng in November 2013.

The site is located along the old Seshego road and devoid of proper services. In terms of what they regard as a temporary arrangement they have been wait-ing for relocation to a permanent yard, identified as Extension 78 along Nelson Mandela Drive, it was learnt during a previous visit.

The spokesperson for the group said they had voted ANC because they believed the rul-ing party would help them, but instead they failed them.

Asked about turning to an opposition party for assistance, the representative responded by saying: If nothing happens, we are not going to vote in 2016.

DMN Panel Beaters and BC Towing handed over a patrol vehicle to Bochum Taxi Associa-tion in Polokwane on Tuesday. The vehicle will be used to patrol taxi ranks, routes and check points in Senwabarwana and surrounds.

It is not the first time that the two com-panies extend a helping hand. Last year they handed over a patrol vehicle each to the Moletjie and Seshego taxi associations.

We have good relationship with the taxi associations in the province, hence we

decided to donate the vehicle to them. We believe it will add value to the organisation, owner of BC Towing, Marius Fourie said.

Lag bly my grootste plesier.

Stefan Ludik is n sanger, liedjieskrywer en speel die rol van die aantreklike dokter Gustav Kemp in Binnelanders. Hy is ook deel van die musiekgroep, Elvis se Seun.

    >> ANC joined by alliance partners, business community, Polokwane City Football Club>> Cosatu engages in symbolic joining of hands with Zimbabwean delegationYOLANDE NEL>>[email protected]

The African National Congress (ANC) in Limpopo united one Africa with a march seeing various partners and citizens from countries on the continent taking a stance on xenophobia and afrophobia on Fri-day. The ANC in the province was joined by, among others, alliance partners, the business community and representatives of Polokwane City Football Club.

As the march got underway, officials of alliance partner Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) in Limpopo was already engaged in the symbolic joining of hands with a Zimbabwean delegation invited to participate in the Chris Hani Brigade political school. Conducted at a venue on the other side of the inner city precinct, the Cosatu initiative included five representatives of the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions who were part of a programme envisaged to be concluded towards the end of next year, it was learnt. At the time Rudolph Phala, MEC for Provincial Treasury, was engaged in shar-ing valuable lessons on political leadership in his presentation on behalf of the ANC.

Cosatu Provincial Secretary Gerald Twala expressed the hope that the programme would make a contribution towards political development of trade union leaders. Part of an annual national programme, the political school offered 48 delegates from most of the 17 unions represented by the federation in Limpopo and alliance partners an opportunity to engage on relevant issues over a two-day stretch that would occur monthly. Twala indi-cated that he was among the first intake after initial conceptualisation of the initiative.

Through the inclusion of the Zimbabwean delegation they showed commitment to work with trade unions on the African continent, especially in neighbouring countries, said Twala. According to him trade unions in Zim-babwe were struggling in terms of resources and they contributed towards training in order to empower them.

Speaking on behalf of the Zimbabwean del-egates, Tirivanhu Marimo sketched a picture of stagnation of economic growth in their country. Describing poverty levels as extreme, he said more than 80% of the 14 million-strong popula-tion found themselves in dire straits. Workers were not being paid for extensive periods and everyone tried to survive by entering into informal trade to at least make a living, added fellow-unionist Loveness Mashingaidze.

According to Marimo the political environ-ment in that country had to be corrected as political ideologies and policies in place had hampered investment.

Asked about the issue of xenophobia in South Africa, he responded saying they were happy to hear the situation was becoming calm in regions where cases were reported. Many countries assisted South Africans during the liberation struggle and people should

not forget they should help each other. We still need to remember we are human beings and shouldnt resolve problems in fighting each other.

He concluded with the words: We are Africa and we must behave as one in unity.

The Jack Botes Hall was packed to capacity last Friday when the Polokwane Municipality hosted a Career Awareness Drive that was attended by learners from schools from all over the city and surrounds.

In opening the event, Thembi Nkadimeng, Executive Mayor, said that the world is changing every day and that the municipality has responded to embrace this phenomenon by pursuing development in a smart way through its 2030 Smart City Vision

The municipality earlier this year advertised external bursaries and 1 402 applica-tions were received. Bursaries worth more than R2 million were awarded to qualifying young residents. The money was raised from sponsorship and donations from business and other stakeholders who

work with us. The Office of the Executive Mayor continues to champion career awareness to expose our learners to career opportunities and funding institutions. We also have an internship programme where young graduates are recruited and exposed to various working streams in the municipality, Nkadimeng informed.

The Executive Mayors Career Awareness Drive is an initiative aimed at empowering Grade 11 and 12 learners from public schools and unemployed youths from disadvantaged and rural communities with the necessary information, knowledge and attributes that are necessary for their future career aspirations.

By exposing learners to careers that respond to the South African economy, the municipality is contributing to governments New Growth Path (NGP) that aims to meet set targets for scarce and key skills

with the emphasis on skills that apply across the econo-my, Nkadimeng said.

During the event, learners were exposed to critical and scarce skills that are required by the countrys economy and also to opportunities of bursaries and learnership pro-grammes from the municipal-ity, financial institutions and other industries.

Nkadimeng concluded to encourage the learners with a quote from an unknown au-thor No one has ever injured their eyesight by looking at the bright side of life.
