Definition of Pollution
• Pollution means harmful substances contaminate the environment.
• Pollution is the introduction of contaminants in the natural environment that causes adverse changes, in the form
of killing of life , toxicity of environment, damage to ecosystems and aesthetics of our surroundings.

Definition
Air Pollution:
• Air pollution is a contamination of indoor or outdoor environment by any chemical. Physical or biological agent that modifies the natural characteristics of the atmosphere.
Air Pollutant :
• The Substance which contaminate the air are called air pollutants.

Sources of Air Pollution
• Household
combustion devices
• Motor vehicles
• Industrial Facilities
• Forest fires
• Volcanic eruption

Pollutants causing air pollution…..
• Carbon monoxide
• Nitrogen dioxide
• Sulphur dioxide
• Ozone
• Industries
• Automobiles

Effects
• Human health
• Animals
• Plants
• The Atmosphere as a whole

Control Air Pollution
• Maintaining a Healthy distance between the industrialand residential area.
• The Chimney’s should be constructed tall in size sothat the emission must be released higher up in theenvironment.
• The Mining area should be planted with trees.
• The Automobiles must be designed with emissioncontrolled system.

Avoiding Air Pollution
• The waste must be removed and recycled in the
industrial plants and refineries.
• Using Public Transportation helps to prevent the air
pollution.
• Using alternative energy sources like solar energy,
Hydro electric energy and wind energy.

Water Pollution
• Water pollution is the contamination of water bodies
(e.g. lakes, rivers, oceans, aquifers and groundwater).
Water pollution occurs when pollutants are directly
or indirectly discharged into water bodies.
• Water pollution affects plants and organisms living in
these bodies of water. The effect is damaging not
only to individual species and populations, but also to
the natural biological communities.

Categories of Water Pollution
• Point Source:
Point source water
pollution refers to contaminants
that enter a water from a single,
identifiable source, such as
a pipe or ditch.
![Page 18: Pollution](https://reader030.vdocuments.mx/reader030/viewer/2022032714/55ab335a1a28ab567a8b45cf/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
Contd…
• Non Point source
Pollution:
Nonpoint source
pollution refers to diffuse
contamination that does
not originate from a single
discrete source.

Causes of Water Pollution
• Industrial Waste
• Sewage and Waste Water
• Mining Activities
• Marine Dumping
• Accidental Oil Leakage
• Leakage from Sewer lines
• Chemical Fertilizers and Pesticides
• Radioactive Waste
• Urban Development

Effects of Water Pollution
• Death of Aquatic Water Animals
• Breakdown of Food Chain
• Affecting Human Health
• Destruction of Ecosystem

Prevention of Water pollution
• Do not dispose of household chemicals or cleaningagents down the sink or toilet.
• Do not flush pills, liquid or powder medications or drugsdown the toilet.
• Avoid using a garbage disposal. Keep solid wastes solid.
• Minimize the use of pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers.
• Avoid cleaning of Vehicles, Animals and Washing clothes.
• Avoiding discharge of chemicals from the industries.
