by Vittorio Castelliby John Carr

Athens- The officially spon-sored 'Athens In Music '87'event, run over two months andfeaturing international names ina long series of outdoor con-certs at the Panathinaikos foot-ball stadium here, has been hail-ed, "an outstanding success:.despite being held for the mostpart in the worst heatwave con-ditions in years.

Among a mixed roster of

acts featuring in 'Athens InMusic' were Manhattan Trans-fer, Bob Geldof, Joe Cocker,Blue Oyster Cult and BlackSabbath, virtually all of whomfilled the 25.000 seater arena. The event has also helped injectnew life into a record/tape mar-ket which has suffered fromfalling sales since 1982. 'AthensIn Music will now become anannual event.

Milan- Italy is well into its moststar studded rock concert Sum-

er. Over the last months,Prince, U2 and the Eurythmicshave, predictably, emerged asmajor financial and artistic suc-cesses from a roster of interna-tional superstars.

But, according to leadingpromoter Franco Mamone, other established names, in-cluding David Bowie, Genesis,Duran Duran and SpandauBallet, have not done so well.He claims Bowie's audience wasdisappointed to hear a showbased largely on his latest al-

bum, with fern of his goldenoldies.

And apparently Genesis'brand of once progressive rockno longer scores with Italianfans, says Mamone, while Du-ran Duran and Spandau Balletsuffered through too manyshows, too few new recordingsand over -promotion.

Others to score heavily werePeter Gabriel, Simply Red andTina firmer. And yet to comethis year are Bob Dylan, Ma-donna and, almost certainly, asolo Mick Jagger.

is Box, rationalisation of over-seas operations, including theclosure of a West German salesoffice, and a thorough re -ap-praisal of the station's program-ming policy.

Super Channel shareholdersinclude all the ITV companiesexcept Thames, which declinedto take part in the project, plusVirgin. Reports suggest manyam now increasingly pessimis-tic about Super Channel's pros-pects of breaking even in an un-certain and increasingly com-petitive pan-European market. There have been rumours thatsome are considering pullingout, though this has been deniedby Charles Lavison, the chan-nel's joint Managing Director.

Music Box represents one ofthe, major overheads involved, but the decision to renegotiatethe company's contract was

complicated by the fact that itsowners Virgin, Granada andYorkshire am also Super Chan-nel shareholders.

As far as programming isconcerned, the station intendsto focus effort on the 16.00

hours to midnight period withmore mass appeal programmesgoing out at peak times. Cur-rently, 'The Benny Hill Show'and 'The Kenny Everett VideoShow' are top audience -pullers.Transmission hours, says Levi -son, will he from 07.00 hours to02.00 hours the following day,'depending onthe programming."It's simply rationalising," hesays, "making us rather momeffective in all areas."

Launched in January thisyear, Super Channel has enjoy-ed steadily growing audiences, claiming to be seen by over 10million viewers during a threemonth period. Advertising re-venues, however, have failed tokeep pace.

RADIO

RADIORAP

by Cathy InglisAs mentioned in this columnlast week, Radio 1, the Mu-nich based private stationwhich started in May 1985,will cease to exist in its cur-rent form. At the moment Ra-dio 1 broadcasts on a localfrequency but as of March1988 it will move to a biggerfrequency covering the wholearea of Bayern. The station, whose backers include thepublishing and media firmsSpringer, Burda, MBT, UFAand TV Weiss Blau, will, bythen, have adopted a newname and most probably anew style of programming.

Meanwhile at CologneGuenter Breast of WDR willbe awarded a special medalfor long-standing services toGerman product from the

president of the Federal Re-public. Krenz can boast hav-ing long running programmespromoting domestic product:'Play My Melody, a pro-gramme running for 12 years(300 shows) and 'Al Home'for seven years. He is also thecreator of the radio pop show'Music Has No Borders.

Congratulations also to

Frank Rueger who celebrated

his 850th 'Deutsch. Schla-gerlotto' show recently (Au-gust 16) on HR, Frankfurt. The show is dedicated to Ger-man language product andwas started by Rueger in 1970.

Germany remains the

country for new local radiostations - two more new oneshave been announced for theHamburg area: OK Radio, organised by 20 cultural andother non-profit groups, and astation set up by a groupknown as KORAH. Both sta-tions will emphasize localcultural events and informa-tion, something that is re-

quired by the city council.Capital Radio in London

will be wearing flowers in itshair on August 30 when it de-votes the whole day to thespirit of '67. Six hours of mus-ic, fads and fashions of thatyear presented by RogerScott, Kenny Everett andAlan Freeman.

Less happiness at BBC'sRadio 1 where two top DE,Dixie Peach and Mark Pageare apparently leaving. Ru-mours have it that they are notsatisfied with their program-mes always being scheduledfor non -prime time slots. However, a BBC spokesmanhas confirmed that Page willbe working at BBC RadioCleveland, "We know hisheart lies in the north east andhis move is entirely his deci-sion; we are sorry to be losinghim". On Peach's future hewas less clear: "We have tomake room for new program-mes and unfortunately thismeans losing Dixie".

UK Forum DiscussesThe Future Of Radio

Who should regulate radio inthe UK and how should they doit? What am the opportunitiesfor commercial radio? Whatformat will the proposed newstations take? And how will sta-tions cope with the financialburden of copyright and needletime payments? These are justsome of the issues which will beexplored in a two day confer-ence in London next month(September 7-8) organised byIBC (International Business

No Longer Wholly Cult - The Jesus & Mary Chainby Machgiel Bakker

IA/ ith their second album for Blanco V Negra/WEA,VV Glaswegian band The Jesus & Mary Chain have

channelled some of the raw energy that was so typical oftheir earlier work, into more accessible rock tunes. EntitledDarklands, including the band's biggest UK hit to date,April Skies (reaching no. 8 in the UK Top 75) and the follow-up single Happy When It Rains (currently no. 30), the al-bum sports an odd mixture of danceable, guitar -drivenrock and doom -laden atmospheric slow songs.

Although the band is stilloperating in the 'garage rock'tradition, their former trade-mark, the vacuum cleaner -like fuzz guitar sound, hasbeen put to the backgroundand songs like Nine MillionRainy Days, Cherry Came Tooand Darklands all testify to theband's new style.

The Mary & Jesus Chainbuilt up a controversial repu-tation some years back withtheir tumultuous concerts andfirst single releases and wereboycotted by many radio andtv stations because of theiroutspoken opinions and badimage Things seem to have

changed now, and the band'scult status seems in seriousdanger of disappearing. Tosupport the new album, to bereleased in the UK on August31, the band will appear atvarious festivals around Eu-rope and will be embarkingon a UK and European tour inthe autumn. Touring throughIreland and the UK from Sep-tember 4-19, the band willthen do three gigs in Italy atthe end of that month andSwitzerland, Austria, Germa-ny, Holland, Belgium andFrance in the first half ofOctober.

Strange Affection - NewTalents On The Road

Sweden is well known for itsstrange affection for melodicEuro pop. the tour has brought each ofthe three acts good criticalacclaim.

At the finale of each show, the acts joined up to perform IWant You, a soft, medium -paced ballad which slowlyevolves into a passionaterocker. Released by The Re-cord Station and produced byAnders Glenmark of Gemini, the single is currently ridinghigh on the Swedish salescharts.

enhances the chances for successful recording. You can findthis domestic digital marvel in the peaceful Danish country-side, far away from the madding crowds, yet as close to allmajor music capitals as many other studios. Puk Studios havechosen an adventurous track for success in the highly com-petitive recording field.

The country mad stops literallyin front of Puk Studios, only anhour's drive from Aarhus air-port. The site of the present es-tablishment was once occupiedby a monastery, which was laterconverted into a faun. When former Danish musicianJohn 'Puk' Quist (41) bought theplace in 1978, he had to beginfrom scratch. His motives forstarting the studio were simple:'All of us can't be stars. Youhope to achieve that, but therecomes a time that you realisethat it won't work that way foryou. So what then? A lot of mu-sicians dream of the things theycould do; a music store, a res-taurant or a studio."

Quist began on a verymoderate scale, using equip-ment which is now obsolete. But now, only ten years later, hehas reached the point where his

north's facilities are praised inprominent trade publicationsand used by promising and wellestablished acts like JeanneMas, Go West, Depeche Modeand George Michael, who cut /Want Your Sex at Puk's - suc-cess indeed.

To create the present set-up,Puk Studio's had to invest on alarge scale; overall investmenthas now reached a total of £3million. This is far more thanthe original plans indicated butsuperior quality demands had tobe paid for. But Quist talks likea man who sleeps well despitethis huge financial risk. "It'sdifferent when you take suchrisks by yourself. When 'real'investors have shares they ex-pect high interest and profits. As a single owner I don't have toworry about that .d lam muchmore into all the things that am

work. Studio manager MogensBelle (35), once a member ofthe band Bamses 'dinner whichrepresented Denmark in the Eu-rovision Song Festival of 1980,puts it like this: "Part of the re-ward or profit is the sheer joy ofactually owning and working ina place like this and havingthose big guys come in and hearthem do their gig. To see some -

"We absolutely don'twant to turn Puk's into afactory."

body perform, or write, or singwell. That's an amazing ex-perience .d that's what reallymakes it worthwhile."

Puk has an impressive trackrecord of recording artists. Thestudio is so popular that de-mands for studio time some-times have robe refused. Belle:"Chris R. phoned us, but wehad to tam him down. It wasimpossible because GeorgeMichael, who originally intend-ed to come fora week, decidedto stay for six weeks once hewas here. And Pink Floyd, we

had to apologise to them too. Novacancies. Obviously we don'twant to do that, but on the otherhand, expanding with m extrastudio may very well destroyour present way of working. Weabsolutely don't want to turninto a factory."

So why am the Puk Studiosso attractive to recording ar-tists? Belle: "There are a num-ber of factors. First and fore-most,there is an advanced, scientifically designed set ofvery user-friendly tools availa-ble. Secondly, we offer uniquea.oustic quality in a surround-ing that is light, spacious andcomfortable. This is true bothfor the studio rooms as well asthe accornodation and leisurebuildings. And thirdly, we'repersonally highly involved inboth the technical and domesticservices. Even the food, quitean important daily feature, getsa lot of care and attention. Ourchef, Peter, is a specialist, whotakes the individual preferencesof the clients very seriously.Really, the food is heavenly. And last, but not least, we offerall this in one package for ahighly competitive price. If youbreak our price (E1.500 per day,all -in for six people) down intoall the different items that we

offer - studios, recording facili-ties, control rooms and con-soles, monitor systems, digitalsynthesizers, technicians, addi-tional instruments and equip-ment plus food, lodging andrecreational facilities - you'llsee that this is true."

This concept of an all -inprice enable studio time buyersto calculate recording cost moreaccurately in advance. "Manyother studios use a basic rateand then charge for all extraservic. on top. Once you'vegotten them in, you can alwayslure them into spending moremoney than they originally in-tended. 'They're stuck and in theend the bill gets larger andlarger.

"When people visit us theyare surprised by the spacioussunlit moms. Studios used to be

"We wanted to do some-thing completely different."

pitch dark, like working in acellar. We wanted somethingcompletely different. First wehired Andy Munro to design theaccoustic features in the controlrooms. Ile is very good at that. And we employed architect Mo-gens Hansen to design the buil-dings and the interiors. Therewas also a big involvement fromthe staff of B.SC.Ek. in Copen-hagen, to secure a totally goodelectronic plan. All of this wascarefully planned in a theoreti-cal, scientific fashion and thenthe theory was put into practice.

"The advantages of ourmonitoring system are its capac-ities to play loud and crystalclear at the same time. Thishelps tremendously duringoverdubbing. No more hassleswith headphones that aren'tloud enough. Here, a guitar

player dubs in the control momin a live atmosphere and hehears exactly what he is doing.

"This monitor system ac-tually works like a mag-nifying glass. What youhear is what you get."

The same applies for the pro-ducer. This monitor system re-produces full range digital fre-quencies giving all the neces-sary existing power in the bassarea. It actually works like amagnifying glass, you can 'see'every little detail in the music. What you hear is what you get.

"Some producers cominghere for the first time bring theirown CDs to play here. They say,'good grief, I've never heardthis or that before on this cd'.And some bands bring their

awn monitors and use them forhile but in the end they all

just use ours."Discussing the technical

pros and cons of various equip-ment, Mogens Belle explainshis views on the cost and use ofdigital synthesizer systems suchas the Synclavier and Fairlight."Puk is using two Fairlightsnow. There's one big advantage:it is very' user-friendly, whichthe Synclavier definitely is not.The Synclavier is a great systembut 1 think the price is far overthe top really. It is a modularsystem, you can buy a ratherbasic system and then add newcomponents to it, whereas theFanlight is the finished thing. Acomplete Fairlight amounts toapproximately £85.000 whilethe Synclavier may reach a totalof approximately £300.000 in itsmost expensive form. And theFairlight can do the same jobs,it is able to sequence a track, to

temple, and so on. In America, and with the big stars likeMichael Jackson, Stevie Won-der and Pete Townshend, the

Part of Puke relaxation area.

Synclavier seems to be the stan-dard. But you have to be big tobe able to afford it. It seems tome that the Fairlight is the moreaccepted choice so far in

Europe."Puk's customers come from

all over the world. "Our mainmarket is in the UK, but we alsoattract bands from Denmark,Sweden, Finland, Germany andFrance, and we're concentratingon acts from the US now. Ourmain production is albums, butwe've done singles as well.Once people decide to recordoutside their own direct en-vironment, they tend to go forexotic places like Paris or thesouth of France. We are in Den-mark which hasn't a glamour -

"We have to have the real-ly big guys come back andsay 'that was great:"

ous reputation, so we reallyhave to attract people throughour facilities. We have to havethe really big guys come back.d say, 'that was great'. Up tonow, 95% of the producers orbands that come to have a lookat Puk Studios come back. Theysee what they get for theirmoney and decide to book. Wehave no problems there.

"This year we have hadmore and more short-term pro-jects for two or three weeks. That's nice, because we see dif-ferent faces, but it's also verynice to host a band for a coupleof months, like Go West, whenthey recorded Dancing On TheCouch for five months. Youtend to feel they are part of thefamily. It's sad when theyleave."

Offers Pour In For GermanProducers Mende/de Rouge

- PROFILE -by Machgiel Bakker

nth the European market becoming more and more oneV V common musical market, the role of continental pro-

ducers is likewise increasing. Although territories like theBenelux, southern Europe, Germany and Scandinavia are farfrom being equal to the UK and US when it comes to creativeoutput, the continental European sound is gaining in impor-tance. Producers like Bolland and Bolland (Falco), ClaudioCecchetto (Sandy Marton, Taffy, P4F), Dieter Bohlen(Modem Talking, C.C. Catch, Chris Norman) and MichaelCretu (Sandra) have managed to create songs appealing to a.wide European audience.

Gunther Mende and Candy deRouge are two German produc-ers whose influence on the Eu-ropean music scene is often un-noticed. They have written andproduced songs for JenniferRush, Bonnie Bianco and SallyOldfield. In fact, they arranged, produced and co -wrote one ofEurope's most successful pro-ductions of 1985, the millionseller The Power Of Love byJennifer Rush which hit thenumber one spot in the UK andsold a staggering 1.5 million co-pies in that country alone, mak-ing Rush the first continentalEuropean artist in England toreceive a platinum single (1 mil-lion copies).

Since then, the influence ofMende and de Rouge cannot beignored: the offers for produc-ing are still pouring in and itseems likely that the duo will beworking on the new album ofFalco and the re -launch of theGerman based American singerHelen Schneider. Offers fromRonnie Spector and even PaulRodgers, the legendary Free/Bad Company vocalist are alsocurrently being considered.M&M spoke to the two amica-ble Germans about their dualrole as producers and business-men, the importance of a goodsong and their relationship withthe music industry.

While working for CBS inFrankfurt as an A&R managersome ten years ago, GuntherMende met Candy de Rouge, then a keyboard player andsongwriter for the band Red Ba-ron. In 1980 the two decided towrite songs together and found -

10

ed their production companyMAD Music in 1982. "Duringthat time we met twice a week, exchanging ideas on songs andmelodies. Becoming partnerswas a normal development.Everything is shared 50-50:songwriting, producing andpublishing." Apart from M&DMusic, the two have a publish-ing company called Libra -phone, a company that deRouge founded ten years ago.

Although most of their suc-cessful productions so far havebeen released on CBS (JenniferRush, Sally Oldfield, The Win-dow Speaks), Mende and deRouge do not have exclusive

Producers/composers/aDerouge.

ge

contracts and are free to workwith anybody. "While I was atCBS in Frankfurt," says Mende,"Michael Stark was MD forCBS Songs. After that he be-came manager of Jennifer Rushand we started working toget-her." They produced the sing-er's first two albums, JenniferRush and Morin yielding hitsingles such as 25 Lovers, Ring

Of Ice, Destiny, If You're EverGonna Lose My Love and thelegendary The Power Of Love. The latter, already covered byLaura Branigan and Air Supply, will also be included on the newalbum of Nana Mouskouri, aTony Visconti production forwhich Mende/de Rouge wrotetwo songs.

Recently the duo relaunch-ed, together with SBK Songs, the career of Mike Oldfield'ssister, Sally Oldfield. The al-bum Femme sold 60.000 copieswithin a month and is firmlyplanted in the German charts. The debut single, Miss You So,and a self -titled album by Bon-nie Bianco for Metronome hasresulted in similar success andboth were big top five hits inGermany.

"Although I do not think wehave a special signature in ourstyle of producing, we have de-veloped more of an intemation-al style over the years and peo-ple are beginning to acknow-ledge this. Offers are pouring inbut we cannot handle more thanfour or five albums a year," m -

plains de Rouge. "It takes a lotof time as we start from scratch.Making the whole creation, from basic demos, choice ofmaterial, producing and arrang-ing is a very time-consumingaffair."

Although based in Berlinwhere they own their own demostudio, most of the productionwork is done in the Far Studios,

30km from Frankfurt. Ownedby Frank Farian (Boney M,Meatloaf and Par Corporation),Far is a complex of three studioswith two Neve consoles and a32 -track digital recording ma-chine. Mende, "Frank is a verygood friend of ours and his stu-dios offer the most perfect sur-roundings. When you start withthe roots of a song, you've got tohave a relaxing and intimateatmosphere."

Music is a full-time job forboth of them, Mende and deRouge alternate their produc-tion jobs with managing song -writing and business affairs. Byvisiting discos at the weekendsand watching pop televisionshows, they try to keep in touchwith current trends and styles."Whatever the future of musicwill look like," says Mende,"the basis is always the same:the melody. As long as you havea good artist/performer/vocalistyou will always sell records. The sound might change, that isthe modern sound that you putto the production, but the basisremains the melody. I think rapwill bee short-lived trend. Andlook at Sigue Sigue Sputnik, they had one hit single andthat's about it. You won't hearany more of them in the comingyears. Artists like Oldfield,Rush or Joe Cocker, they willalways be ok; success doesn'tdepend upon age."

It will certainly be interest-ing to see how Mende/de Rougewill produce Falco. Althoughthey lack a specific style, theirproductions are always verysophisticated and polished; notobtrusive, but certainly appeal-ing and accessible. Althoughmost people aro aware of thesound wrapping up JenniferRush's songs, it is also wellworth listening to Mende and deRouge's work on Sally Old -field's LP (songs like Marlene,Silver Dagger, and Giving AllMy Love) and the German duoThe Window Speaks' albumHeartland.

With Michael Jackson's/ Can't Srop Lov-ing You topping the Airplay Top 50 and theHot 100 for the second consecutive week(the latter was achieved in just two weeks, making it the fastest Hot 100 top climberof all time), Europe is in eager anticipa-tion for the Dad' album, released world-wide on August 31. CBS is lining up one oftheir most elaborate marketing campaignsever, morn about these next week.

Tex Mex rockers Los Lobos are enjoy-ing their first hit with La Samba shootingup in the Airplay Top 50 (2-4!) and the Hot100 Singles 9-10). But with Jackson's al-bum in mind, it's doubtful if they will beable to reach the no. I spot on the AirplayTop 50. If they do manage to siege, it willbe the first time since the Rolling Stones''Harlem Shuffle that a cover has toppedthe Airplay charts. So far in the history ofM&M, only there covers have occupiedthis position: Laum Bennigan's 'Self Con-trol' (four weeks in 1984), Jagger &Bowie's 'Dancing In The Street' (fiveweeks in 1985) and the afore mentioned'Harlem Shuffle' (two weeks in 1986).

Tying in with the relearn of their newalbum (see review on page 17), Wax shootup the Airplay Top 50 from 10 to 5,although Whitney Houston has the big-gest jump this week; her new single, thegently but superfluously arranged Didn'tWe Almost Have Jr All, crashes the top 10(6-29)) and mom hit singles are very likelyto be rolled from the 'Whitney' LP, al-ready Europe's best selling album for fourweeks.

The second best new entry is the PetShop Boys' unlikely combination withDusty Springfield, What Have I Done ToDeserve This, from their forthcoming al-bum 'Actually' out on September 7. Thesingle enters at 19.

Some interesting new singles have

A seductive beat and intriguing melo-dy and vocal lines are the key elements onWendy and Lisa's first single on Virgin,Riderfall. Ever So CleverMake sure you don't miss American English, the second album by the duo Wax (GrahamGouldman, ex-IOCC, and Andrew Gold, form-erly a guitarist with Linda Bonged* Producedby Christopher Neil (Sheens Easton, Mike &The Mechanics), with almost ail the materialself -written, this album proves Wax to be one ofthe best pure pop acts currently around. Itscheerful, rather Motownesgue music maysound uncomplicated, but it's ever so cleverand has, on occasions, a monumental impact, thanks to persistent synthesizer lines and punc-tuated brass. Check out the solid tide track, thebouncing excitement of Bridge To }bur Heart, the streamlined melodies of Ready Or Not andthe gentle Promise.

New Low by Helene Springs yields ener-getic soul/disco in a highly contemporaryproduction. Springs' strongest feature is

definitely her unique voice with its virtuosity ofexpression and its wide range. The songs, largely written by Springs, are muscular withheavy square beats and flashy arrangements.Highlights are: I Need The Night, I Want You,Paper Money and the live track BlackStockings.

The second album by Alexander O'Nealis, just like the debut, divided into a Dance'and 'Slow' section. With O'Neal's warm, crooning voice, coupled with the silky musicalapproach of the Flyte Tyme team, the albumyields good tracks such as Hearsay, To MakeYOU Love Me and When The Party Is Over.

For In My Tribe, American folk/rock band10.000 Maniacs, teamed up with producer

Peter Asher (Linda Ronstadt, lames litylog. The result is a chrystel clear registration of theband's mesmorizing acoustic guitar sound andNathalie Merchant's warm lead vocals. O wellcrafted songs, all self -written, with the excep-tion of Cat Stevens' Peace limn, that linger onlike wanderers on a long sunny road. Besttracks: Hey Jack Kerouac, What's The MatterHere? and the shinning City Of Angels.

Where The Action Is by garage/r&r bandWestworld is cenainly worth the attention.Largely operating within Bo Diddley/GeneVincent patterns but With a very contemporary'dry' beat, this trio creates an exciting combi-nation of the Sfis and the 80s, however peculiarand limited. Check out Psycho lech, SonicBoom Boy, the more quiet Silver Mac and thenasty Ba-Na-Na-Bam-Boo.

Mary Coughlan is an Irish singer whosedebut album Tired & Emotional was favourablyreviewed in our New Talent section in issue 20of this year. Her intimate reading of styles likefolk, blues, jazz and vaudeville made the albumone of the most successful Irish releases of1986. On her new LP for WEA, Under The In-

fluence, Coughlan has gone for mom elaboratearrangements and production. Although losingsome of its earlier smokey atmosphere, whatremains constant is her distinctive and subtlevocal phrasings in songs like the classic GoodMorning Heartache, Cole Potter's Laziest Girland Sunday Mornings. Also check out ParadeOf Clowns, an original song from the mid TO,by Dutch singer Herman Van Veen.

LES ENFANTS DU ROCKcorninued from page 7

scarcely sufficient to producethe programme properly. Thearrival of Patrice Blanc-Francard, until recently Pro-gramme Director at the nowdefunct French channel TV6, is,therefore, hardly seen . asurprise.

Blanc-Francard wants tomaximise the programme's po-tential: "Our audience is not

necessarily relatively young. Those who listened to the Bea-tles and The Stones in the 60sshould also be able to identifywith the programme - rock ismore than mere image". Blanc-Francard is not a newcomer tothe programme; he had alreadyjoined A2 as Director of LightEntertainment, of which 'LesEnfants Du Rock' was a part, in1982. In March 1986 he joined

Patrice Blanc-Francard returns to 'Les Enfants Du Rock'.

TV6. Lenoir will probably be-come Prograrrming Consultantfor A2.

"I have prepared a couple ofspectacular coups," says Blanc-Francard. The first transmis-sion of the new programme ison September 12, including aspecial on this year's GermanRock Pop Festival featuringTim 'timer, Joe Cocker, theEurythmics and UB40. Follow-ing programmes include a spe-cial celebrating the film releaseof 'La Samba' and a feature onthe Cure. 'Les Enfants DuRock' will remain a 90 minute

programme, broadcast everySaturday evening at 23.00 hourson the second channel, A2.Blanc-Francard is not at allworried about this late eveningslot, "The fact that theprogramme will start after thevery popular 'Champs-Elysees'and 'Miami Vice' compensatesfor the fact that it starts so late".

ROCKLINE'ontinued from page I

Rocklin' will be transmittedon August 31 (a public holidayin the UK).

Lined up for guest spots inthe initial 10 week series areCliff Richard, the Pet ShopBoys and Five Star. The intro-ductory hour will include eitherRoger Daltrey or Queen.

With Richard Allinson ofCapital Radio as host, the seriesis produced by Tony Hale andTim Blackmore, both formerheads of music at Capital.Blackmore: "The format is fastpaced with around 20 phonecalls from listeners an hour andmusic taking at least 60% of theon -air time."

'Rocklin' is sponsored bythe Top Shop clothing chain fora reported E200.000. So far 20independent local radio stationshave signed to take the pro-gramme. A female 15-25 year -old audience is the prime target.'Rockline' will require up to 30phone operators and 70 lines, says Piccadilly Productionschief Simon Cole.

MUSIC & MEDIA - August 29, 1987

UNITED KINGDOMCBS rules the top with Michael Jackson re-maining at no. I, followed by Spagna's CallMe. In third position is the Stock, Aitken &Waterman produced Never Gonna Give you Upby Rick Astley, coming from 14. Three newadditions to the top 10: Linda Roastadt &James Ingram with a song from the movie AnAmerican Tale' called Somewhere Out There(8-10, Wet Wel Wet's Sweet Dale Mystery(9-12) and Pet Shop Boys & Dmty Spring-field with What Have I Done To Deserve This(straight M at 10). This unusual pairing of aband with a 60s vocalist seems to be very popu-lar lately, other examples being the Smiths &Sandie Shaw and Yell° with Shirley Bassey,

Other records to watch out for are PseudoEcho with Funkytown (11-241 - originally a hitin 1980 for Lips Inc. - Prince's I/ Got The Look(19-38), Wax with Bridge To Your He.(20-34), Sherrick with Just Call (23-31) andJesus & Mary Chain trying to re -live My Divi-sion days with Happy When It Rains (25-301.New in, apart from Pet Shop Boys, are: TheSmiths with Girlfriend In A Coma; Five Starwho have finally come up with WheneverIbu're Ready, a track not on their 'Silk & Steel'album (they've taken six singles from it);

Whitney Houston with Didrit SW AlmostHave Ir All, The Cult with Wildflower and anEP by Metathca called The 5.98 EP.

GERMANYNo changes at the top: Pet Shop Boys stay atno. 1 and Desireless' IVvyage Voyage at no. 2.A -Ha and Los lobos am both additions to thetop 10, jumping from 11 to 8 and from 54 to 9!respectively. Them are no really exciting movesthis week, but some of the best are: Trade Herrwith Niemak Crept Man So Ganz (20-30); Sili-con Dream with Marcella Mastnnianni(25-42); and Sally Oldfield with the Mende./deRouge (lennifer Rush/Bonnie Bianco) produc-ed Silver Dagger (37-50). Four new entries:

Highlights

Johnny Logan's version of the 10CC hit of1975, Fm Not In Love; Bob Seger's track fromthe Beverly Hills Cop II movie, called Shake-down, Prince's teamwork with Sheens EastonU Got The Look and Pet Shop Boys & DustySpringfield's What Have I Done To DeserveThis.

FRANCEVanessa Paradis holds the top spot for the thirdconsecutive week wth Joe Le Tax, followed byMadonna's La Isla Bonita and Gerard Blancwith Une Azure Histoire. Something that doesnot happen so often - this week's new entriesare all non -French acts: Michael Jackson; A-Ha's The Living Daylights (they recently didtome successful gigs in France); Off (Step ByStep); Chris beak with Blue Hotel; and a re-entry for Roo] & The Gang's Stone Love. Fastmovers are: Herbert Leonard with Qumd firMAintes; Cock Robin's Just Around The Consee (18-28); Compagnie Creole with ALE.(27-321; and George Michael's l Wom Naar Sex(30-36).

HOLLANDMadonna remains the ruling lady followed bythe Robert Cray Band's Right Next Door andTony Esposito's Pupa Chico. Los labor' ver-sion of La Bomba jumps into the top 10 from 13second so does Frank Ashton & Mariska VanKolck with a danceable version of the melodyfrom the famous duet in the 'Pearl Fishers'opera: Let Your Sun Shine jumps from 25 to 10.Another good mover is Terence Twat D'Arby(22-34), his heavy rotation on MTV, which canbe seen in parts of Holland, has surely had in-fluence. Six new entries: Boogie Box High,Dennis Edwards with the re-released trackfrom '84, Dont Look Any Further, a duet withSiedah Garrett, who can also can be heard onthe Michael Jackson single; Eric Clanton &Tina larner's Tearing Us Apart, Wax with ABridge To Roar Heart; Europe's busiest pro-

ducers Stock, Aitken & Waterman with/road-block; and CaroPin's C'est La Ovate, a Dutchsinger's version of Carolien Loeb's big Frenchhit. Apparently Phonogram (the company inHolland distributing Barclay product) didn'tw.t. to release the original Fetich version, soDureco recorded their own one.

ITALYMadonna remains firmly on top. MichaelJackson has not yet been able to beat her andremains in second position. Neither could A -Ha although they jump from 5 to 3. Spagaa'sfollow up Dance Dance Dance jumps from IXto II in her native country, Dutch singerRichenel has are -entry at 20 and Nick Ka -

on of Sam Cmke's Win Your Loveenters at 23.

SPAINDesireless' lbyage Voyage remains on top forthe fifth consecutive week. The danceable sin-gle has already quite a long chart history: it en-tered the European Hot 100 in issue I of thisyear, remained them for 18 weeks, disappearedonlly to re-enter in week 27 and is currently abig hit in Germany, Holland and Switzerland aswell as Spain. Meanwhile, Pet Shop Boysjump from 4 to 2 with ft's A Sin. While StatusQuo have the highest entry with The Quo CakeMix coming in at no. 19, their In The Army Nowsticks at 3 iv its 14th week! Michael Jacksonand George Michael both debut in the top 10with moves from 15 to 6 and from 19 to 8respectively. Another new entry is 16 Bit'sChanging Minds. Mom good moves for theConunonards with Disenchanted (11-18); Spa-gaa's Call Me (17-20; Simply Red's Infidelity(28-341; and A -He's The living Daylights(31-35).
