• They sometimes testify in court.• Most police officers wear uniforms.• Most police officers and detectives work

at least 40 hours a week. When they work longer, they get extra pay. Because police work is a 24-hour-a-day job, some police have to work nights and weekends.

• They have to be ready to go to work at all times.

• Police officers may work very long hours on a case.

Job Outlook/ Future prospects

• The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that from 2007 to 2018, the best job opportunities for police officers were in working for large departments or agencies in high- crime areas.• Police officer jobs were expected to increase by ten percent during that period of time. • You can increase your employment opportunities by obtaining undergraduate degrees in law enforcement, criminal justice or a similar major.• If you were a police officer working in 2009, you would have earned an average yearly salary of $55,860 a year.• Many police officers worked a large amount of over time, resulting in increased take-home pay.

Potential Earnings Now & In The Future• Obviously, the longer you spend on the force, the more money

you will make. Sergeant Nielsen says that the starting pay for officers in his area is $17 an hour, and PayScale.com states that starting annual pay is roughly $28,000 a year. As you progress up the ladder in the criminal justice system, you could earn significantly more than that. Officers with more than 20 years in law enforcement can make upwards of $80,000 a year.

• Statistically, 9% of the current officers in law enforcement have less than one year’s experience in the field. 36% of the population has between one and four years of experience, and 24% have five to nine years of experience. 22% of police officers have ten to nineteen years of experience, and 9% have twenty years or more invested in their careers. You will obviously start as part of the “less than one year” group, but then you can join others with higher pay levels and more experience.

• The employment growth rate will likely be below average. The demand for police services is expected to keep pace with the population growth.

• The retirement rate will likely be above average and the number of retiring workers should contribute to job openings.

• The number of job seekers will likely match the number of job openings.

Nature of Work

• Most primary school teachers instruct one class of children in several subjects.

• In some schools a team of two or more teachers teach and are jointly responsible for a group of students.

• In other schools, a teacher may teach one special subject - usually music, art, reading, science, arithmetic, or physical education - to a number of classes.

• A small but growing number of teachers instruct multi-level classrooms - those with students at several different learning levels.

• In addition to classroom activities, teachers plan lessons, prepare tests, grade papers, prepare report cards, meet with parents, attend faculty meetings and conferences, and supervise extracurricular activities after school.

Training and Education needed• It may seem like an obvious one, but the first step toward

becoming a teacher is to complete high school. A high school diploma is necessary for college admission, and in some cases, it may be enough for entry-level jobs in preschools.

• To teach in a public school, one must complete a bachelor's degree program. Individuals who teach at the grade school level typically major in education and minor in another area, such as science or mathematics.

• Most academic programs in education include the courses necessary to apply for a teacher. Those who majored in a non-education area but want to teach later in their careers can pursue alternative certification programs set by their states. Alternative certification programs vary, but they generally require students to select the subject area they plan to teach and complete coursework in that area and in general pedagogy. All teacher certification programs include a student teaching experience, and after completing a certification program, individuals are eligible to apply for licensure.

• Teachers can often further their careers by joining professional organizations and adding voluntary certification credentials to their resumes.

• Individuals can gain such certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, which offers certification in a variety of subjects, from math to music. degree.

Other Qualifications• In addition to being knowledgeable about the

subjects they teach, teachers must have the ability to communicate, inspire trust and confidence, and motivate students, as well as understand the students’ educational and emotional needs.

• Teachers must be able to recognize and respond to individual and cultural differences in students and employ different teaching methods that will result in higher student achievement.

• They should be organized, dependable, patient, and creative.

• Teachers also must be able to work cooperatively and communicate effectively with other teachers, support staff, parents, and members of the community.

• Private schools associated with religious institutions also desire candidates who share the values that are important to the institution.

• As you gain more experience, you move up the salary scale. Another way to move up the scale is to continue your education. Your post graduate hours count to help you receive better pay.
