English IntroductionThe Polaroid Macro 5 SLR is a simple tooperate, fully automatic, portable cameradesigned for medical and dental docu-mentation of patient condition, manufac-turing, quality control, law enforcement, and other applications that requireclose-up photographs. The camera usesPolaroid self-developing instant colorfilms, so you know right away that youhave the picture you need. The camera produces reproductionsat: 0.2X (20%), 0.4X (40%), 1X (100%), 2X (200%) and 3X (300%). The lenses foreach reproduction size are self-contained,so there is no need to attach accessorieswhen changing magnification. The camera has two built-in electronicflash units that provide even illumination, and a microprocessor-controlled expo-sure system that automatically sets thecamera for the correct exposure at allmagnifications. The flash units also canbe used individually for side-lighting, orin combination with auxiliary lighting.

Other features include:

• Dual-light rangefinder helps you place thecamera at the proper distance from thesubject for correct focus.

• Date/time module that allows you to printthe date or time on pictures.

• Can be hand-held or used on a tripod orcopystand.

• Grid screen in viewfinder for consistentframing of subjects.

Load the filmThe camera uses Polaroid HighDefinitioninstant self-developing color films. Type990 film is recommended; GridFilm andSpectra/Image films also can be used. Each film pack contains 10 sheets of filmand a battery that provides power for theexposure controls, flash units and filmmotor. These high-speed (ISO640/29°)films are balanced for electronic flash anddaylight (5500°K), and produce positivecolor prints.

1 Press the film door release button; thedoor will drop open (6).

2 Before loading the film, check that thefilm processing rollers are clean. Dirt orbits of dried developer on the rollers cancause a pattern of repeated spots or barson pictures. Clean both rollers with a soft,lint-free cloth, dampened w ith water ifnecessary (7). Rotate the rollers as youclean and inspect them.

3 Hold the film pack by the edges, w ith thesafety cover facing up (8). Slide the packall the way into the camera.

4 Close the film door. The safety cover w illbe ejected from the front of the camera(9). The film counter will read ’10’. It counts down, to show how many picturesremain in the pack.

GridFilmThis film has a grid pattern which iscreated during manufacture. The gridpattern appears as an overlay on anypicture taken w ith the film. The pattern consists of 17 vertical and13 horizontal lines. To help you define location on the grid, the vertical lines are identified by lettersacross the top, and the horizontal linesare identified by numbers along the leftborder (25). You can specify the locationon the picture by a letter-number combi-nation.

Calculating measurement from thegrid patternWhen taking pictures at 1X magnification, each square of the grid pattern represents5mm (0.2 in.). The chart below shows thevalue represented by each square in pic-tures taken at each magnification.

Magnification Grid square value

0.2X 1 in. 25mm

0.4X 0.5 in. 13mm

1X 0.2 in. 5mm

2X 0.1 in. 2.5mm

3X 0.07 in. 1.7mm

TroubleshootingDifficulty focusingThe ranging lights may be difficult to seewhen using the camera in very brightlight, or when photographing very darksubjects. If you have difficulty seeing theranging lights:

• Check that the camera is set for the de-sired magnification, and is at the correctdistance from the subject.

• Look over the top of the camera, ratherthan through the viewfinder.

• Check the battery indicator; if necessaryreplace the batteries in the handgrip.

Camera will not function: If the batteryin the film pack is weak or dead, the flashunits w ill not charge and/or the controlpanel will not function.

No image in viewfinder: The magnifica-tion selector knob is between settings.

Pictures too light: The camera may betoo close to the subject for the selectedmagnification. The Lighten/Darken con-trol may be set incorrectly. Very lightsubjects may require setting the controltoward Darken. There may be brightambient light affecting the exposure.

Pictures too dark: The camera may betoo far from the subject for the selectedmagnification. The Lighten/Darken con-trol may be set incorrectly. Very darksubjects may require setting the controltoward Lighten.

Subject not sharp: The camera is at thewrong distance from the subject. (Picturesalso will be incorrectly exposed — toolight or too dark.)

Portions of picture out of focus, ordistorted subject: The camera is notparallel to the subject.
