{3.0} Walkthrough As soon as you press New Game, Professor Birch will give you a small introduction. Then, he'll ask for your name and gender. After all this, he'll say that he gets it now! Professor will then teleport you to Littleroot and tell you to come to his lab. OK, then. [3.1] Littleroot Town When the truck stops, leave. Your mom will escort you to your new home(the left one if you're a boy, the right one if you're a girl.) and tell you to set the new clock that Dad got you. Go right upstairs and examine the clock. When that's done, go to the PC on the very right of your room and withdraw the Potion that's in there. Go downstairs and watch the scene. Now leave your house and go to Professor Birch's laboratory.It's located right underneath your house; you can't miss it. Go inside to find out that he's not there. *sigh* This guy seems like a magnet for trouble. Leave the laboratory and head to your neighbor's house. Watch the scene, then go upstairs. Talk to your new, FRIENDLY rival. The song here will be different depending if your rival is a boy or a girl. Your rival's gender will be opposite of yours. After that, leave the town via the north exit. Oh my god! It's Professor Birch! He's getting attacked by a Pokemon! If you try to leave, he'll yell at you so examine his bag and pick a Pokemon. This will be your starter, so choose wisely. Myself, I picked Torchic because it's such a badass. You'll get your first taste of battle now. It's a weak Pokemon, so you should have no problem defeating it. Just pick fight and Scratch/Tackle/Pound until it's dead. You can't lose this fight; the wild Poochyena will run away if you're dying. Which you really shouldn't be. Watch the scene afterwards. You'll be given the Pokemon that you used earler. Give it a nickname if you want, but we're done here. Examine your starter and learn about its moves. Leave via the north exit again. There's some wild Pokemon here, but you can't catch any yet. There are no trainers here and it's really a short way until Oldale Town. There's not much to do here yet. Talk to the man in white next to the first house to the right. He'll take you to the Pokemart and give you a free Potion. Now leave towards the top exit. Make sure your Pokemon is fully healed. It's only a short way before you meet up with your rival. After that, leave the town via the north exit. Oh my god! It's Professor Birch! He's getting attacked by a Pokemon! If you try to leave, he'll yell at you so examine his bag and pick a Pokemon. This will be your starter, so choose wisely. Myself, I picked Torchic because it's such a badass.

You'll get your first taste of battle now. It's a weak Pokemon, so you should have no problem defeating it. Just pick fight and Scratch/Tackle/Pound until it's dead. You can't lose this fight; the wild Poochyena will run away if you're dying. Which you really shouldn't be.

Watch the scene afterwards. You'll be given the Pokemon that you used earler. Give it a nickname if you want, but we're done here. Examine your starter and learn about its moves.

Leave via the north exit again. There's some wild Pokemon here, but you can't catch any yet. There are no trainers here and it's really a short way until Oldale Town.

There's not much to do here yet. Talk to the man in white next to the first house to the right. He'll take you to the Pokemart and give you a free Potion. Now leave towards the top exit. Make sure your Pokemon is fully healed.

It's only a short way before you meet up with your rival. Talk to him/her. Now, we'll begin your first trainer and rival battle.

Just keep using your offensive technique. You should have the edge still because you had the opportunity to fight and level up before. Use your potion if you're low on health.

After your battle, go all the way back to Littleroot Town. You should heal in a Pokemon Center. The trip shouldn't be too bad, just hop over the ledges. When you get back to Littleroot Town, visit Birch in his lab. Yes, he's in there this time. You'll get a Pokedex and five Pokeballs.

Leave the lab and talk to mom who should be standing outside the door. She'll give you the Running Shoes. Read the instructions. Press B to run.

Leave through Route 101 just one more time. This time, we can catch some Pokemon. Read the basics section if you don't know how.

Catch a Poochyena if you want, but later in the game it's only going to serve as something for your Pokedex. Zigzagoon, as you'll learn soon, is the most common darn thing in the entire game.

[3.2] Oldale Town

When you get to Oldale Town, make sure to stock up on a couple of Pokeballs. Even though we're not going to be using the Pokemon around here, we still want them in our Pokedex. There's no other places of interest here, so heal at the Pokemon Center and head west to Route 102.

There are already some rare goodies this early in the game. Ralts can only be found here and it's really rare, but if you can get your hands on it, be sure to train it. Sure, it might only have Teleport now, but it can develop into one of the strongest Psychic Pokemon later in the game. Wingull and Surskit are also quite rare right now, but are one of the few water Pokemon that areavailable to you right now. If you have Mudkip, don't using either of these two. Don't go searching for these as they are more common later in the game and aren't really that strong anyway. If you do come across one though, use it temporarily unless you have Mudkip. Lotad is a much better choice for a water Pokemon though and it's pretty common here IF you have Sapphire. It's also a grass type.

If you have Ruby, you'll be able to catch a Seedot. Seedots are not really that great unless properly trained, but like the water types, there aren't too many grass Pokemon this early in the game.

As for Wurmple, it has two evolutions. Neither are really that useful later in the game, but it does evolve early and is strong early in the game. It's up to you whether or not you want to use it.

On Route 102, you're going to be fighting some simple trainer battles. When you get to the top of the map, look to your right to see some berry plants. Pick them. You can replant them if you want, but don't worry too much about berries right now. Go ahead and use them, Oran and Leppa are quite common.

Over to your left, look below the Lass trainer to find a Potion lying on the ground. Continue left to hit Petalburg City.

[3.3] Petalburg City

Petalburg is a pretty city. Make sure to talk to the man in the Pokemon Center next to the PC. He'll change your profile for you.

Buy some Pokeballs and maybe a Potion if you can afford it. If you're going to buy Pokeballs in large numbers, do it by 10's so you can get the extra Premier Ball.

When that's all done, go inside the gym. Talk to your dad and watch the scene. If you don't know how to catch a Pokemon, make sure you pay attention. After that, get ready to leave. Your dad will only battle you if you have four badges, so let's get going.

Keep your eye on Taillow. Its attack power is very strong for throughout the game and is a great Pokemon to have. It's especially useful in the forest filled with Bug Pokemon.

It shouldn't be too far before you reach an empty house. This will be useful later on, but for now, just keep going up. Pick the berries here and enter the forest.

Get a Shroomish here, unless you have Treecko. Everything else is just Pokedex stuff, if you don't already have it.

At the entrance of the Petalburg Woods, go east for some items. Make sure to check the empty space in the patch of grass for a hidden potion. Go west otherwise. You should see a short scene. Battle the Team Aqua/Magma Grunt. In Sapphire, you'll be battling Team Aqua for the rest of the game and Ruby Magma. The song will also vary before the battle.

Anyway, I took out the Level 9 Poochyena in one shot so it shouldn't beat you up too badly. You'll get a Great Ball for defeating the Grunt. Move along now. Collect the Ether right before the exit of the woods.

Exiting the woods is still Route 104, so the Pokemon here are the same. Talk to the guy to the left to get TM09 containing Bullet Seed. Go behind the house above and examine all of the empty spaces(and the Pokeball of course) for strong hidden items. Now go inside the house and talk to everyone to receive a berry and Wailmer Pail. Keep walking along the path and you'll get to the next city.

[3.4] Rustboro City

Places of Interest:-------------------1. Devon Corporation. It's the big building to the left of the northern exit. It's kind of hard to miss. This building will be important later on.

2. The Pokemon School. If you're new to Pokemon, the school here will give you a ton of great tips. Talking to the teacher will also earn you a Quick Claw.

3. The Cutter's House. Make sure that you get the HM01!

Right now, all we want to do is defeat the Gym Leader. So head over to the gym with your strongest Pokemon and let's fight.

RUSTBORO GYM - ROXANNE

Talk to the man at the entrance for some tips. Rock types, eh? If you have Mudkip or Treecko or caught a Wingull, Lotad, Shroomish, or Surskit, this will be a lot easier. And if you don't have any one of those or haven't trained them, Dustox's Confusion can still do wonders. And not only that, the Bullet Seed TM(TM09) that you got from the man outside the flower type is a grass move. Teach that to someone if you're having trouble.

You can avoid the trainers in this room, but I would fight them. They give great experience and gives you taste of Roxanne's power.

DO NOT underestimate Roxanne. She's not Brock. Her first Pokemon, Geodude, is a cinch. It's double weak against grass and water. Nosepass, however, is harder. It has a surprisingly high special defense that can withstand two or three water attacks. Roxanne also has two potions that she can use. Make sure that your Pokemon can take a couple of hits. Don't be afraid to use a Potion.

Roxanne's Pokemon mostly rely on Rock Throw and Rock Tomb. Rock Tomb lowers your Pokemon's speed which can be a bit hazardous on slow water/grass types. Rock Throw can inflict quite a bit of damage. The best thing is to have several Pokemon which are strong against Roxanne because if she gets critical hit and your only Pokemon that's good against her rocks goes down, you're pretty much screwed. Torchic users, make sure to level up that Shroomish as it can eat up tons of attacks. For anyone who's having trouble, level up a Shroomish. Also, Stun Spore helps stop that barrage of attacks from Geodude/ Nosepass.

When Roxanne's defeated, you'll receive the Stone Badge which raises your attack strength and allows you to use the move Cut outside of battle(we need this for later), and TM39(Rock Tomb).

When you leave, there will be a short scene where that man you saved later gets robbed. If you can't guess, we'll need to save him again.

Leave the city via the exit on the right to Route 116 to see the man. Talk to him and progress right. Head into the Rusturf Tunnel. This will only be a short walk, don't worry.

RUSTURF TUNNEL+--------------------------------------+|WILD POKEMON | APPEARANCE RATE(R/S) ||--------------------------------------||Whismur | 100% |Grab the Pokeball at the top of the tunnel, then confront the Team Aqua/Magma Grunt. Whoop his sorry Pokemon, then watch the scene. You'll meet Mr. Briney and get the Devon Goods back. Since we can't go any further, leave.

Return to Rustboro. You'll meet that man who got his goods stolen. Watch the scene. You'll receive another Great Ball, a PokeNav, a Letter for Steven, and an errand. Looks like Dewford will be our next step forward. But to do that, we'll have to take a step backwards.

Head out back through the woods. You should meet your rival on your way out, but he's not going to do anything. Hop over the ledges. When you're back on Route 104, go down a bit. Remember that deserted house earlier? Go in there to find Mr. Briney. Talk to him and say yes. We're setting sail for Dewford!

[3.5] Dewford Town

Places of Interest:-------------------1. Check the house right where you get off the boat. Talk to the people there for a Silk Scarf.

2. Dewford Hall. Make them say something funny.

Anyway, Steven's not here. So let's take on the gym.

DEWFORD GYM - BRAWLY

This gym is pretty dark. Defeat the trainers along the way to make it lighter. Like Roxanne, these guys are nice for experience.

Brawly's not too hard as long as you have a flying Pokemon. There were plenty around that you should have passed. Wingull, Taillow, and if you went into Granite Cave, Zubat. Torchic users will also have Peck available. Brawly's stronger Pokemon is actually Machop. It has a higher defense so it's tougher to take down. Brawly will use Bulk Up at least a few times in this battle. This raises his Pokemon's Attack and Defense, making it harder for you to kill him. This also makes it easier for him to defeat you.

There's not too much of a strategy to win this battle. Your best bet would be a quick attack. A high defense Pokemon would eat up his attacks, but he might spend some time Bulking Up which is worse for you in the long run when his Pokemon become strong enough to take you down in one hit. Makuhita has a low defense, so he'll go down easily. Just worry about quickly taking out Machop. Oh, one more thing. Machop has a weaker Special Defense than Defense, so if you have a Pokemon with Special Attacks, use those if you have no flying or psychic type attacks.

Defeating Brawly will give you a Knuckle Badge. This makes Pokemon up to Level 30, even in trades, obey you. More importantly, it'll allow you to use Flash outside of battle. You'll also get TM08 containing Bulk Up.

Now that we have the Knuckle Badge, head up and left around the island. You'll reach Granite Cave.

Talk to the Hiker at the entrance. He'll give you TM05. Teach it to a Pokemon in your party(but not a good one; Flash sucks.).

We see a couple of new faces here. Geodude the only one really worth keeping in your party.

After you head down the staircase, it'll be dark. Use Flash to lighten up the path.

Get an Abra here if you can. Just test your luck and throw a Pokeball at max health; I caught mine that way. Also, make sure to get an Aron if you don't want a Geodude. You'll need to train it for the next gym.

Go down on the first fork to find a Pokeball. Ignore the mud slide, we can't do anything about that right now. The rest of the path is really straightforward. You should soon return to the ground floor of Granite Cave, but on a side blocked if you were to try to get here directly from the entrance. Go through the opening to find Steven. Give him the letter and he'll give you a TM47 containing Steel Wing. Now let's get out of here.

When you chat with Mr. Briney again, you'll have the choice of going to the grand Slateport City. Choose to go there.

[3.6] Slateport City

Briney will take you to the beach surrounding Slateport. Battle the trainers here to fill up your Trainer's Eyes. One of the girls here will also give you a Soft Sand. Also check out the Beach House. Beat everyone here to get six Soda Pops.

Places of Interest:-------------------1. Name Rater's House. If you hate your Pokemon's name, change it here.

2. Pokemon Fan Club. This is a very important place if you were to choose to enter a Pokemon Contest.

3. Pokemon Contest House. Remember how these look. You can't enter this one right now, but in the future you'll probably be coming back here. Get a Pokeblock Case from here anyhow.

4. The Slateport Harbor. This will be important later on in the storyline.

Slateport has a bunch of stores besides the actual Mart. They're along the left side of town.

PURCHASE A HARBOR MAIL HERE!!!

There's no gym here, but we have business to do. As always. First, go to the shipyard. It's the big brown house. Talk to the first person you see there. Remember those Devon Goods? We want to find Captain Stern.

Leave, then go to the museum where the long line of Team Aqua/Magma gang members were. Go inside. Yeah, pay the darn fee. Talk to the first grunt you see. He'll give you a TM46 containing Thief and run off. Go upstairs and talk to Captain Stern. Give him the Devon Goods, then Team Aqua/Magma will attack you. Defeat both of the grunts and you'll meet their boss.

We're done with Slateport now. Leave towards the top to Route 110.

There's a whole slew of new Pokemon here. Keep your eye on the electric Pokemon. They're OK for the beginning of the game since you're a bit lacking in the electric department. Oddish is an excellent Pokemon to keep if you dislike your grass Pokemon. Gulpin is trash though, get it for the Pokedex only.

At the beginning of Route 110, you'll see a house. This is Cycling Road. We can't go in it because we don't have a bicycle. D'oh. Just continue up through the grassy area.

You should see another house. This is the Trick House, and we can enter for this one. Read the Aftermath section for more details.

Go right from the Trick House. Make sure to save, because Brendan/May is right around the corner.

Not too hard. Your rival has obviously been training his/her Pokemon a lot and has a well balanced team. You should too, though. Your biggest problem will be Shroomish. Shroomish has a bad habit of using Stun Spore, then being switched out to a stronger Pokemon. Since you're slower like that, it's a big problem for you. Bringing some sacrificial Pokemon with you is pretty helpful. Also, watch out for Shroomish's ability: Effect Spore. If you're not paralyzed,attacking it with a physical attack MAY make you poisoned, paralyzed, or asleep. Not much you can do about it though...

Numel and Wailmer are easy. Using Pokemon of their weaknesses should take them out quickly. All they can do is attack, so defensive Pokemon will help too. The starter is also easy, although at a high level. Any Pokemon that can eat a few attacks can take it out. You can always through Stun Spore right back at your rival.

After defeating your rival, he/she'll give you an Itemfinder. It's not really useful, but nice to have if you're bored or like crappy items.

Heal at the Pokemon Center if you're hurt, then continue along the road to Mauville City.

[3.7] Mauville City

Places of Interest:-------------------1. First off, you must, must, MUST go to Rydel's Cycles. Ask for a Mach Bike.

2. Next, hopefully you would have bought a Harbor Mail from Slateport like I told you to. Give the lady in the house between the Game Corner and PokeMart the item and she'll give you a Coin Case.

3. Now we can go to the Game Corner. Gamble all you want, but don't spend all of your money.

4. The other house next to the house has a man who'll give you HM06 containing Rock Smash. This is very, very important.

5. The man in the Pokemon Center. You know, the weird guy. There are five versions that can very in every game.

Go in front of the gym and talk to Wally. Battle him. He really sucks. Defeat his only Pokemon. You'll now have access to the gym! Let's get started.

MAUVILLE GYM - WATTSON

This gym has a "puzzle." To solve it, step on the switch at the top left corner. Every trainer here has an electric type move on their Pokemon. Yes, that includes the Zigzagoon. Ground types are immune to electric attacks, so you should have a field day with Geodude.

Wattson can be easy or hard depending on your Pokemon. If you have a Geodude or Marshtomp, he shouldn't be able to lay a finger on you. Remember, Ground types are totally resistant to electric attacks. If not, just have something effective against steel.

Ground attacks will wipe the floor with Magnemite and Magneton. Even though they are strong, they are 4x weak to ground attacks since they are half steel. They both have amazingly high Special Attack. Use fire or fighting attacks if you don't have ground moves. Magnemite and Magneton attack similarly. They'll use Thunder Shock and Shock Wave to deal a lot of damage to your Pokemon. If you have higher leveled Pokemon, he'll have them use Thunder Wave first. This can be a nuisance, so make sure to have some berries or Paralyz Heal.

Voltorb attacks in a different pattern. It'll mostly be using Spark. When it has HP in the yellow zone, be sure to switch out your strong Pokemon because it will Selfdestruct. This will probably kill whoever you have out, so it's best to have a sacrificial lamb. Voltorb is also very fast(but not as fast as Kadabra ;)).

When you defeat Wattson, you'll get the Dynamo Badge which allows you to use Rock Smash outside of battle as well as make them a little faster. You'll also get TM36 containing Shock Wave, a rather useless move compared to Thunderbolt.

After you beat Wattson, head North onto Route 111. You'll pass by the Winstrate House. You can defeat them for a Macho Brace, but it's all optional.

Break the rocks blocking your path with Rock Smash, HM06. You'll pass by some reporters. These guys like to stalk you, so defeat them if you want. You should soon come up to a fork. Going North leads into the desert, but we can't enter since the sandstorm is too strong. So head west onto Route 112.

The Fiery Path is straightforward. You'll see a boulder as you go through, but there's nothing that we can do about it right now. When you come out, head onto Route 111. Talk to the guy facing the tree and say yes to receive a TM43 containing Secret Power. Now you can make secret bases if you teach that to a Pokemon.

Head up Route 111. Talk to the girl to get a free berry, then pick all the bushes. If your Pokemon are near dead, go around the right to find a very welcoming home name...Old Lady's Rest Stop. Go in, rest, tell her to stop making you rest, then come out. Get back over to the left you old lady.

You'll soon come across Route 113. It looks like it's snowing, but it's actually ash. There's a very nice Pokemon if you search hard enough here. There are also nice hidden items. Examine all the little circles on the floor.

Once at the top of the volcano, move up and left. Battle the grunts until you get to their leader. For those playing Sapphire, it'll be Archie. For those playing Ruby, it'll be Maxie. They are not too tough.

Both of these guys come down quite easily. Mightyena can be annoying using Sand-Attack all the time, but a quick Pokemon with a fighting type move will bring it down really quickly. Mightyena has a laughable defense. Next is Golbat. Like Mightyena, Golbat will annoy you, but he'll use Confuse Ray. This can only be cured by switching out or using a berry. It has low defenses, so a rock, ice, electric, or psychic type will quickly kill it. Not too hard.

If you're battling Archie, he'll send out Sharpedo. Sharpedo has very high attack, but terrible defenses. It's water/dark, so any of its weaknesses should defeat it in 1-2 hits.

If you're battling Maxie, you'll be fighting a Camerupt. Still a piece of cake. Camerupt is slow but can deal damage. It takes 4x damage to water attacks, so give it a dousing and it'll go down. If you have no water types left, send out a Pokemon that can eat up attacks and beat it down slowly.

Maxie/Archie has two Super Potions handy.

After defeating Maxie/Archie, examine the machine to get a Meteorite. You can return to Fallabor to give Prof. Cozmo the meteorite and get a TM in return, or you can do that later and continue downwards to Larvaridge Town.

The path down below is called the Jagged Pass.

Not much to do in this town, so let's bang up the gym. Make sure to bring Revives, Rawst Berries or Burn Heals, and a juiced up and ready to go water Pokemon. Bring along ground backups too.

LARVARIDGE GYM - FLANNERY

Yes, there is actually a puzzle in this gym. Not a tough one, just long. We're going to have to step in each of the holes so we can get to Flannery. There's only one route to get there. Step in the wrong hole, you'll end up in the beginning or fight a trainer. Here's the order:

Bottom left, left(only one there), top left, top(only one), left, top(only one), top right, right(only one), bottom left, bottom(only one).

That should get you to Flannery. Now save and get ready to fight.

So you think that just because Flannery only has fire type Pokemon, she'll go down easy, right? NO. Both of her Slugmas have Light Screen to protect all of her Pokemon against special attacks for five whole turns. She also has Sunny Day on them which halves the power of water attacks and doubles the power of fire attacks for five turns.

Flannery seems to be expecting a water type attack. Well, she has a good counter strategy, but she's forgetting that fire types are also weak against ground and rock types. Defeat her two Slugmas with a strong water type, and if that can't defeat her Torkoal, send them out.

Torkoal is different than the Slugmas. Hopefully, the Slugmas' Light Screen or Sunny Day hasn't carried over. Torkoal has very, very high defensive stats so it will most likely not go down in one or two hits even by its weaknesses. The only way to defeat Torkoal is to keep up with attacks. Torkoal is very smart. Even though its attack strengths aren't so high, it can override that. Overheat is a super strong fire attack that'll probably kill most Pokemon resistant to it(excluding 4x resistance *coughGeodudecough*), but greatly lower its special attacks.

Torkoal will attack with Body Slam if it has no attacks that are strong against your Pokemon. This can paralyze your Pokemon making it more hell for you. Lastly, Torkoal has Flail. When it's just about dead and can take one more hit, it'll use Flail which will wreck havoc on your Pokemon since it does more damage when it has low HP.

Flannery has two Hyper Potions to use on whomever she likes.

To defeat Torkoal, it's best that you have a rock type Pokemon, or a rock/ ground for resistance to all of her attacks. Graveler and Nosepass are fine options. Another fire Pokemon with ground or rock attacks will also be fine Pokemon. Whatever you do, just try not to rely so much on a sweep by a water type Pokemon.

After you defeat Flannery, you'll receive the Heat Badge which allows Pokemon up to Level 50 obey you, even those in trades and allows you to use Strength outside of battle.

Since we beat Flannery, we now have four badges. Remember what your dad said? He'll battle you when you have four badges. So that will be our next destination. Leave towards the hole on your right.

As you leave the gym, you'll meet up with your rival. He/she is so nice, so he/she'll give you the Go-Goggles. Watch him trash talk to you. There are several routes that we can take back to Petalburg City. I would jump the ledges to the right of Larvaridge, then through the desert.

All nice Pokemon. Trapinch is hard to train, but it'll evolve into a very cool Dragon Pokemon at way later levels. Cacnea is a good offensive Grass/Dark Pokemon.

In the desert, make sure to get a fossil in the top right corner. The Claw Fossil turns into Anorith, an offensive Bug/Rock Pokemon, and the Root Fossilwill turn into Lileep, a defensive Rock/Grass Pokemon. I chose the Claw Fossil, just because Anorith's evolution just looks so damn sexy.

After clearing through the desert, head back west into Fallabor Town. This is just a pit stop; continue until Meteor Falls. Exit through the west. No, we still can't explore Meteor Falls further. Head down the ledges until you're back in Rustboro.

Head intp Devon Corp. and get an Exp. Share from the president. The PokeMart here also sells two new kinds of Pokeballs, the Timer Ball and Repeat Ball. They're both a little expensive, but work wonders.

Head back towards the way of Petalburg Woods down below. As you pass the flower shop, talk to the girl outside to get a free White Herb. The flower shop is also selling flowers now(>_>) as decorations. Don't buy any if you're low on money as they don't really do anything.

Head all the way back to Petalburg City through the Petalburg Woods.

[3.10] Petalburg City Returned

Everything's the same here. Remember way back when, Norman told us that he'll fight us when we have four badges? Well, now that we have them, we can fight him. The PokeMart has gained a Great Ball and Super Potion in their stock. Pick up what you need and go inside the gym.

PETALBURG GYM - NORMAN

In this gym, we absolutely must fight to continue. There are two doors. Each one has a name on it. The trainers there will use items to make their battles better. That's OK; there's not much of a difference. This gym uses normal type Pokemon, so any fighting type should take most of them down. I recommend fighting all of the trainers here because they give great experience and money.

I don't know about you, but all Norman did was attack me with crap. Any Pokemon with a high defense or Protect/Detect will win this very easily. Although Slaking has damn near the highest

attack strength in the game, it can't attack every other turn. Using Protect/Detect on the turns that it must attack will make it very easy. If you don't have, use something like SleepPowder, Stun Spore, or Supersonic to make it tougher for Slaking to attack when it can. Using brute force can't win this battle as chances are, Slaking's stronger than you.

Vigoroth sucks. All it does is attack, attack, attack. It's not nearly as powerful as Slaking, so a high defense or quick attacking Pokemon will take it out quickly.

When you defeat Norman, you'll get the Balance Badge. This allows you to use Surf outside of battle and increases your Defense a little. You'll also get TM42 containing Facade.

After you defeat Norman, heal up and visit Wally's house. Talk to Wally's dad to receive HM03 containing Surf, a great water type attack in battle and allows you to swim outside of it. Teach it as we're going to make use of its power.

Go back through the Petalburg Woods and to Rustboro. Make a right to RusturfTunnel. Go through it and use Rock Smash on the rock. Watch the scene, thenwe'll be at Verdanturf Town.

Make sure to check out the Daycare Center as it'll be important for those who like to battle competitively. The route also has tons of people from the Trainer's Eyes. Get the three bushes with Wepear berries in them. Continue until you return to Mauville.

Mauville's another pit stop. Nothing to do here, so go right until you reach the water's edge. Surf right across using your new HM. You'll find Tentacool and Wingull there. These will be the basic marine Pokemon that you'll find out in the sea, so get used to seeing those faces. I'm not going to mention them all the time as it would be redundant. >_>

Now that we reached Route 118, we can continue on our journey. Talk to the fisherman to get a Good Rod. Good, now we can fish. As you continue a bit further, you'll meet up with Steven. Remember, that guy we had to deliver the letter to early in the game? At Dewford? Yeah, him. He'll chat a bit and leave.

Route 119 can start raining at any given moment. This WILL effect your battles, just not by much. It'll add the infininte rain effect.(Water damage x2, fire damage x.5, takes 2 turns to charge for Solarbeam.)

Route 119 also has tall grass. That means you'll have to walk through it. There's a bunch of losers in the first batch of tall grass that will copy your movements. I don't think that you get anything for defeating them though.

Walking past the first batch of tall grass will get you to a house. Nothing happens here, so continue forward. Any path will do as long as it goes up. Don't go up surfing though. You should soon reach the weather institute. Talk to the grunts blocking the bridge and they'll say that they don't want you to go in the Weather Institute. So you know what? Let's go in the WeatherInstitute.

Inside the Weather Institute, make a left towards the kid. Take a nap on the bed(yes, while Team Aqua/Magma is here >_>) to heal all of your Pokemon, then proceed to kick some ass. On the second floor, go to the left and talk to the Aqua/Magma member. This person is an administrator! She's still a terrible trainer though. Use the same Pokemon you've been using against the otherMagma/Aqua grunts as they're dark/fire Pokemon.

After Team Aqua/Magma leave, deposit a Pokemon on the floor below and talk to the scientist to receive a free Level 30 Castform. How nice. It also has a Mystic Water equipped on it, so take it off. Heal your Pokemon, then save. There's a tougher battle up ahead. Cross the bridge to meet your rival.

Your rival is still pretty bad. He/she has the same three Pokemon, so you should be familiar with how to beat them. They still have nearly the same attacks. Shroomish will poison/paralyze/make you fall asleep, Wailmer will attack you even though it has terrible offense, and pretty much everything else are all offensive Pokemon. Nothing new or different.

Your nice rival will give you an HM02 after defeating him/her. If you need to heal, go back and sleep at the Weather Institute. Continue up from where you fought your rival and you will reach Fortree City.

When you get to where the bridge is, talk to Steven. The next battle won't be too hard, don't worry. Make sure to have some Pokeballs though. When you're Pokemon are ready, battle the Kecleon. It's rare in most places, but there are a few more invisible ones that you can find. I recommend you catch this anyway. After fighting the Kecleon, Steven will give you the Devon Scope.

Return to Fortree and use the Devon Scope in front of the gym. Defeat the Kecleon(sometimes it will run) and we'll now have entrance to the gym!

FORTREE GYM - WINONA

Winona uses Flying type Pokemon. No, not just normal Flying Pokemon, dual- type Flying Pokemon. So don't just barrage in with only Electric or Rock Pokemon. But do bring some.

At the entrance, walk to the right. There will be a turnstile. Push right through it. On the next one, push it down. Walk around it to continue up.

This next one is hard. Push the one shaped like an L up once. Now push the one on the right right. Go around back to the L shaped one. Push it right, then down. Now go back around the other turnstile on the right and push it left.

On the next part of the puzzle, push the turnstile in front of you to the right. Push the next one right too, then down. Walk around to the left and push the turnstile on the very left down. Go around the bottom and push the turnstile there up.

Walk to Winona and prepare for battle.

Winona's easiest Pokemon is Swellow. Swellow has high speed and attack, but will easily go down with an electric or rock type attack. If you don't have any(shame on you, against a flying type trainer), attack it normally. Just watch out at low HP levels. Swellow likes to annoy you with Double Team and has a move called Endeavor that will greatly lower your HP to the same asits.

Pelipper and Skarmory have terrific defense, contrary to Swellow. However, they both have a weakness. Pelipper is 4x weak to electric attacks. It can't really do anything besides stall you with Protect or use weak attacks. Skarmory is weak against Fire, but has a higher attack than Pelipper and can take at least a few hits from any physical attack.

Altaria is Winona's pride and glory. It's weak against ice, but you probably don't have any ice attakcs at the moment. Rocks and electrics will also go down with an Earthquake, so we're going to have to go with a quick and fast Pokemon here. Altaria has an attack called Dragon Dance. While it's soaking up hits from your Pokemon, it will continue to raise its attack and speed until it can pretty much destroy your Pokemon in one hit and also go first. Winona has a Hyper Potion that she will probably use on Altaria, so make sure to attack quick and VERY quick. If you have Roar, it will be useful to use it against Altaria as when switched out, it'll lose all of its temporary stat bonuses. Hitting it with Confusion or Paralysis should also help a lot.

After Winona goes down, she'll give you the Feather Badge. This allows all Pokemon up to Level 70 obey you. It also allows you to use Fly outside of battle. She'll also give you TM40 containing Aerial Ace, a strong flying attack.

We're done in Fortree. Our next destination is rather far, so get your bike and Pokemon ready and head among Route 120.

Go across the bridge. It is rainy here and your Water Pokemon's water attacks will be doubled, so be sure to use them here. Also, make sure that you have a strong Pokemon that can take a Milotic, otherwise ignore the second female trainer that you see.

The rest of the path is pretty straightforward.

This battle is really pathetic. Unfortunately, this is the last time that you'll ever fight your rival. His starter will never fully evolve. All of his Pokemon do the basic 1-2-punch, meaning they always attack. Your rival is probably no harder than an ordinary trainer.

After all that's done, we have to head back to Mt. Pyre since we can't progress ahead. Go back to Route 121 and walk along the bottom wall until you get to the pier. Surf around the big mountain until you get to the entrance.

Keep going up to meet up with Team Aqua/Magma again. We don't have another boss battle this time. Just go up and watch the scene. Afterwards, if you're playing Ruby, you'll get the Red Orb. If you're playing Sapphire, you'll get the Blue Orb. We need to retrieve the other one. Fly to Slateport. Talk to Captain Stern and watch the scene.

( b. Chasing the Baddies )

You're done in Slateport. Fly back to Lilycove and stock up on stupplies, then surf along the eastern coast. You will find Team Aqua/Magma's "secret" base above the line of Wailmers.

When you land, go down the staircase. There are two teleporters here. Warp to the right to find a Max Elixer and to the left to continue. Turn around the fence over to the teleporter on the left. Take the third teleporter, then keep taking the left one until you are on the bottom row of teleporters. Take the teleporter on the very left.

You will see four Pokeballs to your left. THIS IS THE ONLY TIME YOU CAN GET THE MASTER BALL! IF YOU DON'T GET IT NOW, YOU WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO GET IT EVERY AGAIN!!!! The Master Ball is the one on the topleft. Kill/capture the Electrodes in the way. After that, head back. Take the middle teleporter and the one on the left to return.

Back on the screen with the water in the middle, take the teleporter on your right. Follow the linear path until the big room with two teleporters. Take the one on the right. Follow the path until you reach the room with water. Talk to the guard in front of the water. Woah, an admin! What he says is true; he's a step above the grunts with a Super Potion and evolved Pokemon, but his Pokemon have low defenses and are weak.

Take the teleporter on the right after the scene and exit the hideout through the top. We can't give chase now as we don't have the proper supplies. So what to do now? The Wailmers blocking the path eastward is now open, so heal up and start your sea voyage to Mossdeep City. Sorry if you hate Tentacool.

I HATE this gym. Anyway, at the entrance, flip the switch right above you. Ride the arrow on the left, then the one going up. Hit the switch and come back down. Take the arrow going right. When you stop, take another arrow going right. Hit the switch, then go up. Take the down arrow when you stop and hit the switch. Take the down arrow to return to the entrance. Take the left arrow and you'll get to the gym leaders. What's that? Yes, gym leaders.

They might only have two Pokemon, but Liza and Tate are very difficult. This is a 2-on-2 battle, so concentrate your attacks on one Pokemon at a time. I recommend using a combination of Dark or Water type Pokemon. They're weak against grass, but be careful because Solrock has the Sunny Day/Flamethrower combo.

Concentrate your attacks on one Pokemon. If you are using special attacks, get Solrock. For physical attacks, attack Lunatone. You would want to defeat them as quickly as possible because they both have Calm Mind raising their Special Attack and Special Defense. If they use it enough times, just one attack can take out your Pokemon.

When Liza & Tate are finished, they'll hand you your new Mind Badge which enhances your Special stats and allows you to use Dive out side of battle, and also a TM04 containing Calm Mind. Step on the teleporter and let's get out of here.

( a. Seafloor Cavern )

After you defeat Liza & Tate, head directly south of Mossdeep City onto Route 127. You should see a gigantic patch of dark water. Teach Dive to someone and head deep down. Follow the path to a cave. You should see a submarine there. Resurface and you'll be in the Seafloor Cavern.

Go into the first room. You'll find a bunch of Zubats here. Go up the left side and Rock Smash the rock. Go to where that rock was and use Strength to push the boulder down. Now walk right through the path and push the boulder there right. Go through the door at the top. Push the boulder in front of you forward. Turn right, push the boulder there up. Push the boulder to your left left, then Rock Smash the rock above you. Rock Smash the rock to the left and make your way to the door.

Start following the current. Go right until you are on the left side of the cave in the middle. Then make a left. Surf up and you'll hit piece of land. Head inside the cave here.

Push the boulder blocking your way up. From there, you should have boulders in a shape like this:

Push boulder 1 up, then 7 up. From there, push 8 down and 9 right a couple of times to free your way. Defeat the admin and move into the next room.

The boss is tougher this time around. Mightyena will lower the first Pokemon that you send out's attack, so send out someone that has a special attack that they can use. Mightyena will annoy you with attacks like Swagger. Try to cure the confusion with berries. That'll leave you with an ultra high attack strength!

Crobat and Camerupt/Sharpedo and strong attackers, but will go down when their weakness is used against them. They're not too much of a worry.

After defeating Archie/Maxie, watch Kyogre/Groudon and the scene.

We have to head to Sootopolis City. Head onto Route 126 Northwest from here. Rain Dance/Sunny Day will also take place in all of your battles. Sootopolis looks like a golden rock surrounded by a patch of dark water. You must dive and look for a cave in the surrounding water. Resurface in that cave to arrive at Sootopolis City.

Sootopolis has basically shut themselves off. Just head over to Steven and Wallace and enter the Cave of Origin. Make sure to bring someone with Flash and a crapload of Ultra Balls.

Follow the ladders. Make sure to pick up HM07 on the way. When you finally reach the Pokemon at the very bottom, SAVE YOUR GAME. DO NOT USE YOUR MASTER BALL!!!!

Awaken the Pokemon. Catch it as this is a one-time deal. If you don't restart. Running away or defeating the Pokemon will screw your chances of getting your version exclusive legendary.

After that, exit the cave. You'll start finding Zubat here now. Outside, you should find that the world became all nice and happy again. Talk to Steven in front of the gym, then head inside to face the gym leader.

NOTE: If you want, you can return to Mt. Pyre and watch an extra scene where you and Maxie/Archie return the Red and Blue Orb.

SOOTOPOLIS GYM - WALLACE

There's a puzzle here. In order to progress to Wallace, you need to step on each panel of ice once. Any more, you'll fall and be forced to fight some trainers.

On the first set of steps, go up, right, up, left, left, up, right, and up.

On the second set of steps, go up, left until the wall, until the wall, right twice, down, right three times, down right, up twice, then left until the stairs.

On the third flight of steps, go up, right twice, up, right twice, down, right, up until the wall, left, left, down, left, up, left, down, down, left, left, down, left, up, left, down, left, up, left, up, up, right, down, right, up, right, down, right, up, and right.

Meh, Wallace's only threat is his high leveled Pokemon. Most of his Pokemon are also quite speedy. They like to confuse you using moves like Sweet Kiss and Water Pulse. There's not really much more too it. Use Electric on everything except Whiscash, or Grass. Watch out for Milotic; it has very high Special Defense and has Recover. If you're having trouble on it, try using a move like Toxic. Wallace has a couple of Hyper Potions to boot.

Defeating Wallace will earn you your final badge, the Rain Badge. All Pokemon will now obey you. You'll also be able to use Waterfall(HM07) outside of battle. Like all the other gym leaders, Wallace is a nice guy and will give you a gift of TM03 containing Water Pulse.

Congratulations! We have beaten the ga...I mean, we have all the badges! It's time to take on the Pokemon League. Just for a few notes though, there's an optional city that you can visit called Pacifidilog Town. It's southwest of Sootopolis. I'm not going to type anything on that because...there's nothing there. Just a town.

To get to the Pokemon League, we have to go to Evergrande City. Take whichever route you want and hug the right wall. Check your map often to make that you don't go astray. Make sure that you have a Pokemon with Waterfall!

[3.16] Evergrande City and Victory Road

As soon as you reach Evergrande City, you should notice that it is as uncitylike as possible. Heal in the Pokemon Center and proceed up into Victory Road. Make sure to bring a Pokemon with Flash, Rock Smash, Surf, Waterfall, and Strength.

Push the boulder on the left left, then that path should lead you to a boulder in which you push right. Head right and you'll see two paths with rocks in which you can Rock Smash. Rock Smash the rocks at the bottom. Run across the bridge, then head down. Go down the ladder.

Follow the path until the water. Surf left and ascend the waterfall. Swim around the land and head down the next waterfall. Climb onto the lone piece of land with a ladder on it.

Head around the path. Rock Smash the rock, then push that boulder down. Then Rock Smash the other rock. Go up the ladder. Save, heal up, then follow thepath. We're almost at the end now! There's just one obstacle blocking our way, and his name is Wally.

Wally is much like a boss. That's right, he's no longer a joke. Sort of. He has a wide variety of Pokemon, but they all carry the same moves as if they were wild Pokemon. Attack with their weaknesses and this shouldn't be very hard.

Exit Victory Road. We're at the second half of Evergrande City now. Head up to the Pokemon League and the Elite 4.

Get ready. I recommend that you bring a ton of Revives and Hyper Potions. Your berries should cover for status conditions. There's no real need for the expensive Max Potions or Full Restores. I don't think that you have too many Pokemon with over 200 HP at the moment.

More of a joke, really. All of Sydney's Pokemon will go down with a fighting attack. None of them have a decent to high defense, so this should be an easy fight. Absol, Sharpedo, and Shiftry pack quite a punch if not put down quickly though. All of his Pokemon have stalling powers with that such as Double Team and Swagger.

ELITE FOUR - PHOEBE

Phoebe uses Ghost Pokemon. Her Dusclops' can be really tricky to get by with a huge amount of Defense and many tough moves. Most of her Pokemon carry Will- o-Wisp which burns you. Burn won't just hurt you, it'll halve your attack power too. Make sure to equip some Rawst Berries. The best you can do against her Pokemon is use another Pokemon with Shadow Ball, hopefully a normal type.If not, just try your best pounding her with your most powerful attacks. There's not much else you can do.

ELITE FOUR - GLACIA

Glacia uses Ice type Pokemon. She likes to change the weather by using Hail. This will barely inflict damage on your Pokemon, so use it as a free turn to attack. She has the ol' Water/Ice combos on her team, so don't go barging in with Fire types. Electrics work best on Sealeo and Walrein. Fighting types are also super effective against all of her Pokemon.

Watch out for Walrein. Walrein has Sheer Cold which is an OHKO attack. All of her Pokemon, like Phoebe, have terrific defense. If you're having a gigantic amount of trouble, try using moves like Toxic or Will-o-Wisp.

ELITE FOUR - DRAKE

Ahh, Drake, the last member of the Elite 4. He is a joke compared to the girls of the Elite 4. ANY Ice attack equals an instant win. Four of his Pokemon are 4x weak to Ice and the other is not fully evolved. If you don't have Ice, then buy Blizzard at Lilycove or Ice Beam at the Game Corner. If it's too late for that, just go with special attacks. Flygon is half ground and half dragon, Altaria and Salamence are both Dragon/Flying. Flygon has Levitate, so remember not to use Ground attacks against it.

After that, we've still got one more battle to go. The toughest trainer in all of Hoenn is none other than the Champion, Steven!

CHAMPION - STEVEN

All of his Pokemon have their own strengths/weaknesses. Skarmory is the worst. Take him down quickly with a fire attack or he'll set up the deadly triple Spikes, Toxic, and Roar combo. That will quickly deplete your HP and there's not much you can do about it.(unless for some reason you have Rapid Spin...)

Aggron's a piece of cake. Steven's a cheater and got his Aggron Solarbeam, but that doesn't help him much. Fighting/Ground attack = dead Aggron.

Armaldo is like a better Aggron. Not so high on defense, but has powerful attacks. Pretty standard Pokemon; just bring it down normally with a Rock or Water attack.

Claydol and Cradily both battle alike. They have tough defenses. Cradily will try to restore its health with moves like Ingrain while Claydol just concentrates on making the battle longer and supporting other Pokemon with Reflect and Light Screen.

Metagross is Steven's most powerful Pokemon. At almost Level 60 with moves like Meteor Mash and Psychic, you need a tough defensive Pokemon to stay in game with Metagross. You can probably get a quick Fire Pokemon in for about a turn before you're Earthquaked to death. Use Pokemon which are neutral to it like water. I also find that the version exclusive legendaries works great onMetagross.

Steven seems like he has an unlimited amount of Full Restores, but it's actually only eight. If you can last long enough to plan attack to kill at middle health, then make sure you do so. Long battles will benefit Steven.

After you defeat the Elite 4, your dad will give you a ticket that leads to the Battle Tower. In the Battle Tower, you must fight through seven trainers in a row without healing. Then, you can save or heal. Then continue again to ultimately get a winning steak of 50 or 100. You get ribbons and a sexy trophy for your trouble.

There are two ways to enter: Level 50 or Level 100. For Level 50, you can use three Pokemon under the level of 50. For 100, any Pokemon under Level 100. However, you can't use Kyogre, Groudon, Rayquaza, Deoxys, Jirachi, Mewtwo, Mew, Lugia, Celebi, and Ho-oh. Anything else(including legendary dogs, birds, Regis, Lati@s, etc.) are totally game.

There are some more restrictions. You can't use two of the same Pokemon, two of the same hold items, or gain experience in the Battle Tower. Any Pokemon that you haven't seen before there will NOT be added to your Pokedex.

As an extra tip, please be aware that the opponent's OHKO attacks have a MUCH higher chance of killing than yours. They're gay that way, so use a Pokemon with Sturdy if you can.

[4.3] New Mauville

New Mauville is a side quest that you can do about the time after getting Surf. Just go to Mauville City and you'll see Wattson strolling about the streets. Talk to him and he'll give you the key to New Mauville. What to do with that?

Head below Mauville City to Route 110. Surf around the lake there. Go to the eastern side to find a cave. Go inside. Use your key. Step on the first button that you see. Move left, then step on that green button. Keep going, but skip the next button that you see. Look up and you'll see a Pokeball sitting on a button. Pick it up(it contains Escape Rope) and step on the button.

Skip the next two switches(they're right next to each other covered in Pokeballs. Can be hard to see.) At the next two, uncover them by picking up the Pokeballs. Step on the green switch, then head straight into the room. Step on the switch to quiet down the generator, then use the Escape Rope you picked up before to return to Wattson for your reward. Don't forget to pick upthe Thunderstone next to the generator.

[4.4] Safari Zone

The Safari Zone is an awesome place located on Route 121, right behind Lilycove. Pay 500 to catch all the Pokemon that you want until you walk 500 steps or use up all of your 30 Safari Balls. This place however, does not promote violence. You can only throw Pokeblocks that you've made or go nearer to the Pokemon.

Pokemon like certain kind of Pokeblocks. You can only guess what they like. If you throw one they like, they'll stay longer but be harder to catch. If you want to get a certain nature, deposit a Pokeblock in a Pokeblock feeder that that nature likes. Hang around that area and Pokemon of that nature will appear more often.

Going nearer to a Pokemon will make them flee easier, but makes them easier to catch.

[5.1] Trainer Card

Throughout your game, your trainer card will constantly be changing. Your trainer card can be viewed by selecting your name in the Start menu.

At the beginning of the game, you'll have a green card. It'll have your unique trainer ID at the top right corner, your name, money, amount of unique Pokemon caught and recorded in the Pokedex, your play time, and badges. Press A once to turn it over and reveal the backside.

The backside will have five empty slots. They can be filled. It will record the time of when you first beat the Elite 4, Link battle record, number of trades made with friends, number of Pokeblocks made with friends, contests with friends won, and your Battle Tower record.

There will also be a phrase that shows up on your trainer card that your friends can see. This phrase can be changed from the default by talking to the man standing next to the PC in the Pokemon Center in the first or second town.

Now, like what I said before, you can change the color of your trainer card.

o You'll get a Bronze Card by by beating the Elite 4.o You'll get a Copper Card by collecting 200 Pokemon.o You'll get a Silver Card by winning 100 times in a row in the Battle Tower.o You'll get a Gold Card by beating all five Master rank contests.

These don't have to be gotten in any order. As long as you complete the task!

[5.2] Trading Center

In every Pokemon Center, you can trade with your friends. Just go upstairs and you'll see some people. The first person is for battles. You can select a Single Battle, Double Battle, or Multi Battle. And you can't fight with three players.

The second person allows you to trade with your friend. I think this is for two people only, I never really tried a three-way trade.

The last person is for mixing records. This will allow you to see each others' secret bases, watch TV shows about one another, and some other fun stuff. Whenever you meet with a friend to play Pokemon, always mix records just forthe heck of it. You'll usually find something funny in there.

[5.3] Trainers With Items

There are certain trainers that you can get items from. All you have to do is steal the item using Thief or Covet on the Pokemon indicated. These are all Trainer's Eye folks, so you'll have to fight them a couple of times to get their Pokemon worked up. After the battle, you'll be able to keep the item that you stole.

[5.4] Pokemon With Items

[5.6] Secret Bases

As you progress through the game, you might notice some things like indents in a cave or big trees. Well, if you have Secret Power on a Pokemon, you can turn these into secret bases. You can only have on secret base. Decorate it at your will. To buy decorations, go to Fortree or Lilycove.

Some places have holes. Plug these up with Solid Boards gotten at rare sales in the rooftop of the Lilycove Department Store. There will be a program on TV a couple of days before it.

These secret bases don't really serve much of a purpose. If you mix records with a friend, you'll be able to locate his/her secret base and battle him/her.

[5.7] Dry Internal Battery

Some of the earlier Ruby and Sapphire games have a nasty glitch. When you are on the continue screen, they'll say something about the internal battery having run dry. This means that all the time-based events won't occur, such as berries growing.

This can be fixed with the purchase of Pokemon Fire Red or Leaf Green. On thePokemon FR/LG start menu, press B and select. Follow all the intructions there and link up to Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire. The battery glitch should soon be fixed.

{6.0} Contests

You can find contest houses in four towns: Verdanturf, Fallabor, Slateport, and Lilycove. There are also four difficulties: Normal, Super, Hyper, and Master. To enter a contest, you must first enter the easiest difficulty at Verdanturf.

In a contest, there are two phases. In the first phase, the audience will give you points by the looks of your Pokemon. To make it look good, you need to feed it Pokeblocks. You'll get the Pokeblock case when you get to the Verdanturf contest house. Berry blend berries that are high in level, but low in feel. Feed those Pokeblocks to your Pokemon. Be sure to have levels though as Pokemon can eat only a certain amount of Pokeblocks before being full and never being able to eat ever again. Having a colored scarf also helps.

When you max out a certain contest stat, go to the Pokemon Fan Club at Slateport and have that Pokemon first in your party. You'll get the scarf.

Now, the second stage is when real strategy comes in. This is the appeal stage. You must use one of the four moves in your moveset. Each one will get you a certain amount of hearts, make your opponent lose a certain amount of hearts, or have certain effects like being unable to get startled for one turn. Stars also give your Pokemon one extra heart for every move.

When appealing, try to use moves that are the same as the type of contest you entered. Example, use a tough move like Tackle in a Tough contest. This will make the audience happy and fill a dot. If you are the Pokemon to get all five dots from the audience, you'll get a huge amount of bonus points!

When using moves, you can make combos. Using combos will get you more hearts. I don't really know them, so read a contest FAQ for more information. Make sure that you don't use the same move twice, or you'll lose hearts.

Usually, you can win all the contests with one good Pokemon. I did with my Regice.

{7.0} Items

Items are quite useful and important in battles and outside of them. There are 3 pockets in your itembag: Left contains normal items, middle is key, third are Pokeballs. You can use items to boost your stats both permanently and battle only, heal status conditions, HP, and much more. All items sell for half the price they can be bought at. For those that cannot be bought, they have a high sell price. You can hold a max of 20 different normal items at a time.

Another thing about items is that you can let Pokemon hold them. To do this, go to the item menu, select the item you want the Pokemon to hold(most items will let you, besides Key Items) and select Hold, the second option. Then choose the Pokemon that you want to hold the item. Some items like Potions will do nothing for your Pokemon, but others have a certain effect.

{8.0} Berries

Berries have returned from Pokemon Gold and Silver with a celestial bang. Every once in a while as you are traveling through the game, you may find a bush with a berry on it. Examine it to receive a certain number of berries. After that, there will be a bare patch of land. From there, you can plant your own berries.

After you plant a berry, you must wait a certain amount of time for it to bloom. Some berries take a very short time while others can take a really long time. Most of the rarer berries are slow-growing. However, there's a catch. You can speed up berry growth by watering plants with the Wailmer Pail that you get from the Flower Shop early in the game. About once every few hours should speed up their growth. Don't expect them to miraculously become ripe in just an hour or two after that though.

So, what can you do with these sexy berries? Well, you can equip them on your Pokemon for immediate, no-lost-turn effects. But some berries don't have effects. These are used only for berry blending. At any Contest House, examine the square machine and you can blend with computers or up to three friends via a link cable. See the contest section for more details.

TMs allow you to teach a Pokemon a certain move. These moves are often strong and some can only be gotten by using the TM. They can only be used once so choose the Pokemon to teach wisely.

I recommend that you don't use them during the game if you plan to battle friends in link battles as most of these can only be gotten once during the game. They should be used on Pokemon which you plan to keep on your perfect team.

I recommend that before you use a TM, read the breeding section about how TMs can be passed down through different egg groups and Pokemon. I usually teach TMs to genderless Pokemon where you can't pass the TM onto it or an egg group that cannot get that move except by TM.

HMs also allow you to teach a Pokemon a certain move. The difference between this and TMs is that HMs can be used as many times as you want and have an effect outside of battle. To use this effect, go to the Pokemon menu and select the Pokemon that has the HM. There will be a move highlighted in blue.

{12.0} Breeding

Breeding is an essential thing to raising good Pokemon. There are many advantages to it, such as passing new moves and TMs or getting multiples of rare one of a kind Pokemon. Breeding is easy, all you have to do is go to the house west of Mauville. There will be a breeding center there. Get a male Pokemon and a female Pokemon in the same egg group and let them sit there. Come back later and you may find an egg. Hatch it into a Level 5 Pokemon.

What are egg groups though? Egg groups are all the Pokemon that can breed with each other. It doesn't have to be the same species. They will have a guaranteed chance of breeding when put together. Due to the gigantic amount of Pokemon, I'm only listing their basic evolutions. All of their evolutions are in the same egg group though except for the Nidoran family, pre-evolutions and a few others. Genderless Pokemon can only breed with Ditto regardless of their egg groups with an exception of No Eggs.

Note: It's possible that a Pokemon can be in 2 egg groups. The ones in No Eggs group can't breed, even with a Ditto. Duh.

Although sometimes the breeding guy will say that the two Pokemon don't like each other, they will still breed but it will just take longer. Genderless Pokemon can only breed with a Ditto and the egg will not be Ditto.

When breeding two different species, the egg will always be the species of the female. The egg can take a certain amount of steps before hatching. Here's the different number of steps before hatching:

You can breed moves onto the baby Pokemon. There are several ways to do this.

1. The baby Pokemon will always have the moves that it should have at level 5.

2. If both the mother and the father has a move that a baby Pokemon can learn by level up, the baby will have that move.

3. If the father has an egg move that the baby can only learn by breeding, the baby will (Obviously) have that move.

4. If the father knows a TM/HM move that the baby can learn, the baby will have that move.

Due to #4, it is wise to teach TMs to males or genderless Pokemon rather than females so you can breed to many other Pokemon. Remember that TM moves that a Pokemon learns naturally can still be bred to a Pokemon as a TM!

The baby Pokemon's stats I think are in no way related to the mother/father.Many people are still not sure if the IVs are related, but most likely not.

Remember to try to get egg moves onto a Pokemon! They are often very good moves that can't be learned in any other way.

Some Pokemon have certain exceptions to breeding rules. One of them is Volbeat and Illumise. When Illumise is the female Pokemon, if it is at a higher level than its mate the baby will become an Illumise. If it is at a lower level, the baby will become a Volbeat.

For the Nidoran family, the baby of Nidoran Female can be either Nidoran Male or another female.
