Page 3: Pokemon Black Versio18

down your DS and consult a psychologist) and name yourself, and let's get intoit!

In case you're wondering, the Pokemon that Professor Juniper has in the introis a Minccino.

Pokemon | Lvl | Type | Found In ============|=====|=======|========== Tepig | 5 | Fire | Gift or Oshwatt | 5 | Water | Gift or Snivy | 5 | Grass | Gift

Items > Crosstransceiver from your mom > Town Map from your mom > TM 54 from Prof. Juniper after seeing 30 Pokemon > TM 17 from Prof. Juniper after seeing 60 Pokemon > TM 10 From Prof. Juniper after seeing 100 Pokemon > Super Rod from Looker after you beat the game

The game opens in your room. You're there, along with your best friend,Cheren. Both of you are wondering where Bianca is, when Bianca shows up. Thethree of you discuss the gift box sitting on your table and the Pokemon inside. Then Bianca and Cheren agree to give you first dibs. So pick your first Pokemon, young trainer!

_______ | Tepig \___________________________________________________________________ | | | Type: Fire/Fighting* | | Ability: Blaze (When Hit Points are below 1/3rd, a fire attack's power is | | increased to 150%) | | Weak Against: Water, Ground, Flying*, Psychic* and Rock** | | Attack Types Learned: Normal, Fire, Fighting*, Poison, Rock and Dark | | Gyms Strong Against: 3 (Normal*, Bug and Ice) | | Gyms Weak Against: 3 (Water, Ground, and Flying*) |

| Gyms Resistant To: 2 (Bug and Ice*) | | Starting Moves: Tackle (Normal physical) | | Tail Whip (Normal Status) | | | | BACON THAT COOKS ITSELF! Sorry, had to get that out. Tepig is a high | | attack, high HP slow mover. Its two evolutions are both Fire/Fighting in | | the tradition of the Torchic line from Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald, as well as | | a few unusual type attacks (Poison, Rock and Dark) make this a pretty | | good choice for a starter. Tepig is the middle starter in terms of | | difficulty, based on its attack types and type advantages. | | | | *Pignite and Emboar only | | **Tepig only | |___________________________________________________________________________| __________ | Oshawatt \________________________________________________________________ | | | Type: Water | | Ability: Torrent (When Hit Points are below 1/3rd, a water attack's power | | is increased to 150%) | | Weak Against: Electric and Grass | | Attack Types Learned: Normal, Water, Bug and Fighting | | Gyms Strong Against: 2 (Ground and Ice) | | Gyms Weak Against: 2 (Electric and Grass) | | Gyms Resistant To: 1 (Ice) | | Starting Moves: Tackle (Normal physical) | | Tail Whip (Normal Status) | | |

Page 5: Pokemon Black Versio18

| A water otter, Oshawatt is high HP, high attack and special attack slow | | mover. Not a whole lot else to say, except that, like always, the water | | starter is the only one that can use Surf. Oshawatt is the easiest | | starter in terms of difficulty. It should be noted that if you drop | | Revenge (Fighting), Oshawatt loses its attack type advantage over Ice. | | Oshawatt is my favorite starter. | |___________________________________________________________________________| _______ | Snivy \___________________________________________________________________ | | | Type: Grass | | Ability: Overgrow (When Hit Points are below 1/3rd, a grass attack's | | power is increased to 150%) | | Weak Against: Fire, Ice, Flying, Poison and Bug | | Attack Types Learned: Normal and Grass | | Gyms Strong Against: 1 (Ground) | | Gyms Weak Against: 4 (Fire, Bug, Flying and Ice) | | Gyms Resistant To: 2 (Electric and Ground) | | Starting Moves: Tackle (Normal physical) | | Leer (Normal Status) | | | | A worthless grass snake is your third choice. And I do mean worthless. | | Snivy only learns normal and grass type attacks (it also learns two | | Poison type status attacks), and it’s weak against half the gyms in | | Unova. Snivy is the hardest starter to use. | |___________________________________________________________________________|

As I mentioned, Oshawatt is my favorite, but the choice is yours. Bianca will

Page 6: Pokemon Black Versio18

pick next and take the Pokemon that you have a type advantage over. Cheren will grab what's left, which will be the one that has a type advantage overyou. After everyone's got their new Pokemon, Bianca will challenge you to a battle in your bedroom. Cheren will tell her that the Pokemon will destroy theroom, but Bianca will ignore him (she's more than a little ditzy) and you'll get into your very first Pokemon battle!

________ | Bianca \___________________________ | | | P: 500 | | | | Team | | Lv 5 Snivy (If you chose Tepig) | | Tackle (Normal physical) | | Leer (Normal Status) | | Lv 5 Tepig (If you chose Oshawatt) | | Tackle (Normal physical) | | Tail Whip (Normal Status) | | Lv 5 Oshawatt (If you chose Snivy) | | Tackle (Normal physical) | | Tail Whip (Normal Status) | |____________________________________|

This is extremely easy. Just Tackle away until her Pokemon faints. After thebattle, the three of you look around and your room is predictably trashed.Cheren will step in and heal your Pokemon, then decide that the damage isalready done and also challenge you.

________ | Cheren \___________________________ | | | P: 500 | | | | Team | | Lv 5 Snivy (If you chose Tepig) | | Tackle (Normal physical) | | Leer (Normal Status) | | Lv 5 Tepig (If you chose Oshawatt) | | Tackle (Normal physical) | | Tail Whip (Normal Status) | | Lv 5 Oshawatt (If you chose Snivy) | | Tackle (Normal physical) | | Tail Whip (Normal Status) | |____________________________________|

Same "strategy" as Bianca. Type advantages won't come in until later. If you

Page 7: Pokemon Black Versio18

win both battles, your Pokemon will increase to level 6. After this battle, the three of you head downstairs. Cheren and Bianca will apologize for trashing your room and offer to clean it, but your mom won't hear of such athing and promises to clean it for you. As you try to leave, your mom will give you the CROSSTRANSCEIVER (hereafter Xtransceiver) and send you on your way.

Bounce over to Bianca's house, which is southwest of yours. Watch Bianca's overbearing parents try to dissuade her from leaving, then the two of you should head north and meet Cheren in front of Professor Juniper's lab. Head inside to get your shiny new Pokedex. You can also name your started now, if you so desire. Outside of the professor's lab, your mom meets you outside and gives you all TOWN MAPs. Thank her and head for Route 1.

Woo-hoo! It's the "This is how to catch Pokemon" lesson. If this is the firstPokemon game you've ever played, pay attention. If not, button mash untilProf. Juniper finishes. Either way, you'll get 5 POKEBALLs for your trouble.Bianca will challenge you to see who can catch the most Pokemon. There's noprize other than bragging rights. You can't catch Herdier, Watchdog, Scraggy orthe Basculins until later, and there's nothing worth catching right now. If you happen to see shaking grass, step on it. Audino gives a ton of experience.

Page 8: Pokemon Black Versio18

Anywho, after you're done training/catching Pokemon, head north to AccumulaTown. If you talk to the girl on the right along the way, she'll give you afree POTION. As you arrive at Accumula Town, Bianca and you will compare thenumber of Pokemon you've caught. Prof. Juniper will call the three of you onyour Xtransceiver and tell you to meet her at the Pokemom Center. Onward andforward!

Items > Pokeball from man in the top left building on the 2nd floor

Nothing exciting happens as you enter Accumula Town, and probably nothingexciting ever happens in Accumula. You can wonder around and explore to yourheart's content. You cannot, however, leave Accumula town from the left side.If you try, the Knights Templar will forcibly stop you from leaving. A guy onthe second floor of the building in the top left corner (to the right of theexit) will give you a POKEBALL when you talk to him. After you're done withyour explorations, head for the Pokemon Center. It's the big red building withthe glass panels. In this generation, the Pokemart and Pokemon Center are merged into one building.

Prof. Juniper will meet you at the front of the Pokemon Center and take you inside, tell you about the various features, you'll meet up with Bianca, and

Page 9: Pokemon Black Versio18

the good Professor will suggest you heal your Pokemon. Do so. Afterwards, Prof. Juniper will teach you about the PC and the Pokemart. Professor Juniper will wrap up her little tour by sending you to the next town and look for someone named Fennel.

A quick note about Pokemarts in this game. The list of things for sale changesas you get more badges. The list I give is based on what's available the firsttime you enter the town.

If you downloaded the Liberty Pass from Nintendo, you can pick it up from theguy in blue to the left of the entrance.

Also, if you use the PC, you'll notice a handy little function called "Help".Cleverly enough, this is where you can get help to some varied in gamequestions.

Anywho, exit the Pokemon Center and you'll notice a big hoopla in the town square. The Knights Templar are back and preaching to the people about how Pokemon are better free then being cared for by humans and trainers. The Knights Templar is actually Team Plasma, and their mission is to liberate the oppressed Pokemon of the Unova region. Team Plasma is the Pokemon equivalent of PeTA. I'll keep my comments to myself...

The guy in the yellow robes is Ghestis, and you'll be getting to know him a lotbetter. After he finishes talking, they leave, and you and Cheren areapproached by a mysterious trained named N. N says Pokemon talk to him. Thenhe challenges you to a battle.

N's team consists of a Purrloin. The most interesting of its attacks isAssist, which allows Purrloin to randomly pick a move known by any otherPokemon on N's team. Sadly, there are no other Pokemon on N's team, so Assist

Page 10: Pokemon Black Versio18

is absolutely useless in this battle. Dark type Pokemon are weak against Fighting and Bug type, neither of which you have at this point.

In case it wasn't painfully obvious, N is part of Team Plasma, which he'll later reveal. Cheren mentions that he's heading to the next town. You shouldtoo. The exit is on the left.

There's a little more to do here. Head to the left and your Xtransceiver willstart ringing. Your mom wants to meet with you and lo, she's right behind you.She gives you a pair of RUNNING SHOES. Use them by holding down B, and you'llbe able to move faster. There's a POTION in the grass to the north. Also,Purrloin can be caught here. Purrloin is a dark type, very fast, but very weak. There's really no need for a dark type on your team at this precise moment, but you'll need one sooner or later. Catch whatever you so desire and head north to face your first random trainer!

> Youngster Jimmy < P: 112 Patrat Lv 7 (Normal)

Oh look, it's N's Purrloin. Use the same tactics as before and continuethrough the grass, but before you take on the last trainer in the area, head tothe right and up the stairs. Go south and collect the POTION and a POKEBALL.Now backtrack and face down the last trainer on this route.

> Youngster Roland < P: 112 Lillipup Lv 7 (Normal)

Give Roland the same beatdown that you've been giving the other trainers andcontinue north to Striation City. Before you can enter, though, Bianca willcatch up to you and challenge you to a battle.

Bianca's team isn't anything you haven't faced before. She has one potion thatshe'll use if her Pokemon's health gets into the yellow or red. Also, her

starter has learned its first type attack. Not that it'll help much, becauseher starter will still be weak to yours. Pick your Pokemon and layeth thesmackdown. One last note: I'm overleveled. Your Pokemon only need to be aboutlevel 8 or 9.

After you beat Bianca, you can head into Striation City.

Head straight for the Pokemon Center and heal/save. This should be the firstthing you do every time you enter a new city. Striation City is the first citywith a gym in it, but you can't get in yet. Instead, mosey on over to thePokemon School (A staple of Pokemon games for the last few generations). It'sto the left of the Pokemon Center. When you head inside, you'll find Cherenthere. Talk to him and he'll ask if you're looking for the gym leader. Say

Page 13: Pokemon Black Versio18

yes and Cheren will challenge you. Say yes again and teach him a thing or two.

________ _________ | Cheren \______________________ | My Team \____________________ | | | | | P: 800 | | Oshawatt Lv 12 (Water) | | Oran Berry on Starter | | Tackle (Normal physical) | | | | Tail Whip (Normal status) | | IF YOU CHOOSE SNIVY | | Water Gun (Water special) | | Oshawatt Lv 8 (Water) | | Water Sport (Water status | | Tackle (Normal physical) | | Purrloin Lv 9 (Dark) | | Tail Whip (Normal status) | | Scratch (Normal physical) | | Water Gun (Water special) | | Growl (Normal status) | | | | Assist (Varies) | | OR IF YOU CHOOSE TEPIG | |______________________________| | | | Snivy Lv 8 (Grass) | | Tackle (Normal physical) | | Leer (Normal status) | | Vine Whip (Grass physical) | | | | OR IF YOU CHOOSE OSHAWATT | | | | Tepig Lv 8 (Fire) | | Tackle (Normal physical) | | Tail Whip (Normal status) | | Ember (Fire special) | | | | AND | | | | Purrloin Lv 8 (Dark) | | Scratch (Normal physical) | | Growl (Normal status) | | Assist (Varies) | |_______________________________|

Cheren put an Oran Berry on his starter. Oran Berries replenish 10 HP once hisstarter's HP gets below half (into the yellow). Cheren will lead with hisstarter. Like Bianca, it's learned a type specific attack by now, so don't useyour starter against his. Whip out your other Pokemon (you DO have anotherPokemon, don't you?) and start trading blows. As for Cheren's Purrloin, it canuse Assist to great effect against your starter. You're best to stay with yourother Pokemon for this battle and only trot out your starter if you absolutelyneed to.

After you beat Cheren, he graciously gives you three ORAN BERRIES to do withwhat you will. Speak to the boy on your lower right. Answer yes to his

Page 14: Pokemon Black Versio18

question and he'll quiz you about status conditions. Specifically, he'll askyou what item heal poison and what item wakes a sleeping Pokemon. Answer himwith Antidote and Awakening and you'll get a FULL HEAL. You can leave theschool now.

Head for the garden at the west end of the city. If you head south via thebridge, then left, you can pick up a GREAT BALL. Backtrack to the entrance ofthe city. On the left side you should see a small stone walkway with a fenceat the north part. Follow it and pick up an X SPEED. Go back to the entranceand use the bottom set of stairs to enter the building on your right. Talk tothe guy on the right and he'll give you a GREAT BALL. Exit the building andhead north, go around the building to the back, and talk to the guy there andget the DUSK BALL from him. Dusk Balls work very well in caves or at night.

The exit for Route 3 is blocked by a guy who won't let you through because youdon't have a gym badge yet. If you go to the gym, you can talk to the personstanding in front of it. They'll ask what starter you picked, then suggest yougo train in the Dreamyard before you challenge the gym. Why don't you go dothat now?

Another simple battle that you've done before and you're probably getting sickof. Continue on and talk to the last person in the area. They'll ask you whatstarter you picked, then offer you a free Pokemon based on your starter'sweakness. All of them are monkeys, all of them know Scratch, Leer, Lick (aghost type attack) and a type specific attack. The Pans are fairly decent, andwill definitely help in the next gym. Accept your new Pokemon. If you want, head for Striation Gym. It would probably be wiser, though, to head back toRoute 2 and level up your Pokemon to at least level 12. All the Pokemon inStriation Gym are between levels 10-14.

************************** * Striation City, Part 2 * **************************

Head to the Pokemon Center, heal, save, then go to the gym and head in.

***************** * Striation Gym * *****************

Items > Fresh Water from the man at the entrance > Trio Badge for defeating Cilian, Chili, or Cress > TM 83- Work Up for defeating Cilian, Chili or Cress

Striation Gym is somewhat unusual for a Pokemon game. Instead of one set typeyou fight against, all the regular trainers use the three Pokemon that you'vealready fought many times by now and the gym leader uses the Pan that has anadvantage over your starter's type. Since both Normal and Dark are weak toFighting type attacks, your best bet is just to use your strongest Pokemon. Your only chance for a Fighting type attack thus far is if you picked Tepig asyour started and raised it to level 17, then evolved it. Seriously, don'tbother. This gym won't be that hard.

Page 16: Pokemon Black Versio18

First of all, as you enter, a man named Clyde will stop you. He'll wax philosophically about how special this moment is and give you a FRESH WATER. Fresh water restores 30 HP and is a little more effective than Potion. He'll be at all 8 gyms, so you can get a fresh water at each gym you go in to. Thisgym uses a quiz based on type advantages to advance through it. There's a picture on the curtain and three pictures on the floor. You just step on thepanel that has an advantage over the picture. It's based around Water, Grassand Fire. The first curtain has a flame on it, so step on the Water panel andgo through the curtain to face your first trainer.

> Waiter Maxwell < P: 440 Lillipup Lv 11 (Normal)

More of the same. Pick your favorite and layeth the smackdown. The curtainhere is a water symbol, so step on the leaf symbol to open it and continue on.Get the attention of the waitress here.

> Waitress Tia < P: 400 Patrat Lv 10 (Normal) Purrloin Lv 10 (Dark)

And yet more of the same. The curtain for this area is a leaf symbol. Step onthe fire symbol and head through. Heal your Pokemon, either in the PokemonCenter or with potions before you talk to the guy with green hair. His name isCilan. Cilan will introduce his brother, Chili, and sister, Cress. Together, the three of them will explain that you have to fight the one who has a typeadvantage over your starter. If you picked Tepig, you fight Cress. If youpicked Snivy, you fight Chili. If you picked Oshawatt, you fight Cilan. Goup to the trainer you have to fight and talk to them to start your first GymLeader battle.

Yup. Kicked Purrloin off my team. The three Cs, despite having different Pans, all have the same Lillipup. And it's finally different than the onesyou've been facing. This Lillipup knows Bite, Odor Sleuth, Work Up andHelping Hand. Bite is a Dark type attack, Odor Sleuth allows Lillipup to hitGhost type Pokemon with a Normal or Fighting type attack (it's totally uselessright now), Helping Hand boosts an ally's attack power in a 2 on 2 battle (alsototally useless right now), and Work Up severely jacks up Lillipup's attack andspecial attack. As for the Pans, they all know Work Up, one same type attack,Lick, and Fury Swipes. Lick is a Ghost type attack and absolutely WILL NOTharm Normal type Pokemon. Fury Swipes is a fairly weak Normal type attack, butit hits 2 to 5 times. Each Leader also has a Potion at their disposal. Your best strategy is to put your starter out against Lillipup and switch to your own Pan against the Leader's Pan.

After you win, you'll get the Trio Badge, P 1680, and TM 83. The Trio Badgemakes all Pokemon up to level 20 obey you. TM 83 is work up. It's prettydescent, so you might want to teach it to a Pokemon. Actually, you might wantto teach it to many Pokemon. TMs are reusable for the first time in Black andWhite.

After you beat up on the chosen Gym Leader, there's nothing more to do here.Exit the gym and you'll meet Fennel. She'll take you to her lab and give youHM 01- Cut. Cut is a fairly good Normal type attack, and it also allows you tocut down the small trees scattered around Unova. Fennel will also ask you togo to the Dreamyard and get some Dream Mist from a Pokemon named Munna so shecan power a machine that lets you use the Dream World. If you talk to theother woman in the room, she'll tell you her name is Amantina and that shemanages the box system. She'll explain the Battle Box to you if you wish. You're done here. Get a Pokemon that you don't need and can learn Cut

Page 19: Pokemon Black Versio18

(Purrloin is a good choice) from the PC in the lab and leave.

Before you head for the Dreamyard, backtrack to Route 2 and head left. Seethat strange tree with the 3 green circles on it? You can use cut on those.Do so and claim your GREAT BALL and POTION. Now you can head for theDreamyard.

Back again. Before you cut down the tree, head back to where you got your Panand pick up a free X Defend. Now go and cut down the tree. Bianca will catchup with you. The two of you explore the area together and come across a Munna. You'll chase it a little bit, and then Team Plasma shows up. They try to getthe Munna to make Dream Mist so they can trick people into releasing theirPokemon by kicking it. Then they try to liberate your Pokemon from you.

> Team Plasma Grunt < P: 400 Patrat Lv 10 (Normal)

Sooner or later, you'll fight new Pokemon, I promise. This is a back-to-backbattle. No rest for the heroes.

> Team Plasma Grunt < P: 400 Purrloin Lv 10 (Dark)

A hidden Musharna will use its Dream Mist to scare the Plasma Grunts off, then happily makes more Dream Mist for you as it and the Munna run off. Fennel will

Page 20: Pokemon Black Versio18

come and take it, and you're free to explore the area. You can catch both Munna and Musharna in this area. Musharna is very rare and can't learn any newmoves, but you should definitely grab a Munna while you're here. It's slow, but it otherwise has fairly good stats and a good move set.

As for the items, there's a POKEBALL in the grass to the left. Head right andgo up the stairs. You'll find a PARLYZ HEAL south of the stairs. If you go upthe stairs, you can get a POTION on the left side and a REPEL on the rightside. That's all for here. Level up if you want to and head back to StriationCity.

************************** * Striation City, Part 3 * **************************

Head back for Fennel's lab and she'll give you a C-GEAR and PAL PAD for yourtroubles. The C-Gear allows you to use the Dream World and Entralink. ThePal Pad lets you record Friend Codes. You're finally done in Striation City. The guy in the garden will let you pass. Do so and head out on to Route 3.

Items > Super Potion found in the grass where you fight Cheren > Ultra Ball found in the sandbox outside the day care (Dowsing Machine)

You can find the Pokemon Daycare Center here. You can drop off your Pokemonhere and they'll gain experience as you walk around. Be warned though, they

Page 21: Pokemon Black Versio18

also learn moves normally and could possibly destroy your move set. Also, ifyou drop off two Pokemon of opposite sexes in the same egg group, there's achance that they'll produce an egg. I go into breeding more in depth in thatsection.

The house to the right of the Pokemon Day Care is the human day care. Pokeyour head in and the woman in front of the door will heal your Pokemon for youas many times as you need. Go into the playground next to the human day careand you'll be challenged to a battle.

Continue on. There's a little boy by the slide awaiting your challenge. > Preschooler Tully < P: 40 Pansage Lv 10 (Grass)

> Twins Kumi and Amy P: 160 Kumi: Purrloin Lv 10 (Dark) Amy: Purrloin Lv 10 (Dark)

And now for something completely different. This is a doubles battle, firstintroduced in R/S/E/FR/LG. Instead of sending out one Pokemon, you and your

Page 22: Pokemon Black Versio18

opponent send out two. It makes for more strategy, since some attacks will hitboth Pokemon and some attacks and abilities affect all the Pokemon on thefield.

Anyhow, continue on and Cheren will eventually stop you and immediatelychallenge you to a battle.

Cheren's team is the same as last time and yet, it's somehow weaker. Use thesame tactics as before. When you beat Cheren into the ground, two Team Plasmamembers will come flying past you, followed by Bianca and a little girl. Itseems Team Plasma stole the little girl's Pokemon. You and Cheren promise toget it back.

In the grass by where you fought Cheren, you can grab a SUPER POTION. Thisseems an appropriate time to discuss the new Pokemon in this area. Pidove isthis version's Pidgey, and about as useful. Blitzle is halfway between poorand descent and the only electric type you're going to see for a LONG time.

Cheren will meet you by the entrance of a cave. Talk to him and go in.

You can catch aRoggenrola (If you say Roggenrola out loud, it sounds like "rock 'n' roller")or a Woobat if you want. They're this version's Zubat and Geodude. You canalso try to get a Drilbur from the shaking dirt if you want.

Cheren will meet you at the gate and show you the Pokemon Center, as well asgive you 3 CHESTO BERRIES. Heal, save, and buy what you need in the PokemonCenter. One house to the left of the Pokemon Center is a guy who sells battleitems. If you go two house to the left of the Pokemon Center, you can talk tothe blue haired kid inside to get either a MIRACLE SEED, CHARCOAL, or MYSTICWATER if you tell her which Pokemon you picked as a starter. You can sayanyone you want and she'll give you the corresponding item. I would recommendthat you not say Snivy, because you can get a Miracle Seed not far from here.

The house to the right of the Pokemon Center has a girl on the top level whowill trade you a Petilil for a Cottonee. You don't have one now, but you cancatch one just outside of the city if you want. There's not much else to dohere except to challenge the gym for your next badge. But, as you enter thegym, N stops you and challenges you to a battle.

Blitzle is EXTREMELY helpful here. If you have a Munna or a Woobat, you're allset.

After you beat N and he leaves, you can go into the museum. The stairs to the gym are in the back. Since you'll be fighting Normal types, Ghost attacks won't work at all and Fighting types are super effective. If you don't have a Pignite and you want a Pokemon with Fighting type attacks, you can get one in Pinwheel forest.

Page 28: Pokemon Black Versio18

Upon entering the museum Lenora's husband, will give you a quick tour. The most impressive thing about the museum is the Dragonite skeleton that's the centerpiece. They also have the bone clubs used by Cubone and Marowak, a Moon Stone (no, you CAN'T take it), the Unown writing, and an Armaldo fossil. Pretty cool. Lenora's husband stops the tour in front of the gym.

*************** * Nacrene Gym * ***************

Items > Fresh Water given by the man at the entrance > Basic Badge for defeating Lenora > TM 67- Retaliate for defeating Lenora

First things first. Claim your free Fresh Water. The clues to advance in thisgym are hidden in books. As you enter, you'll meet your first vict-- er, challenger.

> School Kid Carter < P: 340 Patrat Lv 17 (Normal)

Here we go again. Attack Patrat in any fashion you so choose. Afterwards, hetells you to look for a book called "Nice to Meet You, Pokemon" and says it'snear the front shelves. And aye, that it is. Specifically, it's on the lefthand side. The book tells you to go looking for the book about the firstPokemon you saw in this gym (Patrat). The book you're looking for is rightbehind the first one. The second book is a riddle, and the answer is alocomotive. The scientist behind this bookcase is currently reading the book, but she'll kindly give it to you if you can make her Pokemon faint.

> Scientist Satomi < P: 816 Herdier Lv 17 (Normal)

Herdier is Lillipup's first evolution. Still pretty simple, though. This booktells you that if you heat something up in a pot, it'll be delicious. The bookyou're looking for is "Sweets for Pokemon" and it's in the front row on theright hand side. Go read that one and tells you to move in a counter-clockwise

Page 29: Pokemon Black Versio18

circle around the gym, stopping at the shelf you're in front of now. Go to that shelf and challenge the trainer there.

> School Kid Lydia < P: 300 Lillipup Lv 15 (Normal) Lillipup Lv 15 (Normal) Lillipup Lv 15 (Normal)

Uhhhh, okay. Have fun with this battle. Reading the book will unlock thefinal battle with Lenora.

Lenora's very strong for the second gym leader, much in the tradition of Mistyin FR/LG. Herdier is strong and it's ability lowers you Pokemon's attack stat.Leer and Bite you've seen before, and Retaliate is a new move that does doubledamage if another team member's Pokemon fainted on the turn before. Not doingmuch for Herdier, but Retaliate is still a decent attack. However, Herdier isthe minor league warm up. The real threat is Lenora's Watchdog. It almostalways uses Retaliate and Hypnosis on its first two turns. Retaliate gets a same-type attack bonus (STAB), as well as its power doubled because Herdierfainted the turn before. Hypnosis puts your Pokemon to sleep. Crunch is the

Page 30: Pokemon Black Versio18

stronger version of Bite.

Obviously, try not to field Psychic types. Bite and Crunch will hurt them in ahurry. Remember those Chesto Berries you got from Cheren? Now would be a goodtime to put them on your Pokemon so that they wake up immediately after Hypnosis hits. Take down Herdier in the usual manner, then turn your attentionto Watchdog. First of all, put a Pokemon with extremely low HP remaining outagainst it. Retaliate will most likely kill whatever Pokemon you put out.Second, if you have a Pokemon that knows Yawn, try to get it off so you canattack/heal/switch out in peace. Then unload on it with whatever attacks youhave that are strong enough to take it down.

After you win, collect the Basic Badge (Pokemon up to level 30 will obey you)and TM 67- Retaliate. Just then, you'll be interrupted by Lenora's husband, who will tell you that Team Plasma is stealing the bones. Rush upstairs and witness them make off with Dragonite's skull. Follow Lenora outside and you'llmeet up with Burgh, the Leader of Castelia's gym, Bianca, and Cheren. You allset off to look for the Dragonite skull, but before you do, Bianca gives youthe DOWSING MACHINE.

The Dowsing Machine is mercifully easier to use than in HS/SS. It literallypoints you to where you need to go. When it shows a little box, you're standing on top of the item. If you fire it up in front of the museum, it'llpoint to the left. You'll find the hidden ULTRA BALL on the patio of the cafe.If you walk around by the tracks to the west of the city, you can find aREVIVE. You can also backtrack through areas you've already completed to collect other hidden items. When you're ready, continue on to Pinwheel Forrest.
