This volume presents the papers given at an international conference on “Functional Aspects of Egyptian Ceramics within their Archaeological Context”, which was held from 24th to 25th July, 2009 at the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research, University of Cambridge, UK. The aim of this conference was to discuss Egyptian pottery in different archaeological contexts and the employ-ment of ceramics for understanding these deposits. At the same time some archaeological contexts were utilised to gain insights into the function of pottery, in order to integrate both approaches. The papers cover domestic, funerary, festival, and ritual contexts and the ceramic finds within them. Additional topics are the widely neglected reuse of pottery and how ceramic material can be inter-preted in its wider socio-economic context. The case studies discuss pottery derived from many sites in Egypt from the Delta in the north to Elephantine in the south, and cover a chronological range from the Old Kingdom to the Coptic period. This broad approach ensures that the focus was on the role of Egyptian pottery within past societies as seen through various types of archaeological contexts. This volume provides archaeological and ceramic insights that are significant beyond Ancient Egypt.

DAYR AL-BARSHA VOLUME II: FIRST INTERMEDIATE PERIOD RESTORATION OF OLD KINGDOM TOMBSDE MEYER M.

This is the second volume of the final reports of the mission of the KU Leuven in Dayr al-Barsha (Middle Egypt). This volume is dedicated to the Old Kingdom rock tombs that are mainly located on the south hill of the site. First a general introduction to this necropolis is given, together with a history of the research in this area. While most of the rock tombs are undecorated, there are several that do contain reliefs and inscriptions, all of which are published here for the first time in facsimile drawings and provided with transcriptions and translations. The title strings of the persons buried at Dayr al-Barsha are then compared to the title strings encountered in contemporary tombs at nearby al-Shaykh Sa{id. In five Old Kingdom tombs at Dayr al-Barsha and four at al-Shaykh Sa{id, restora-tion inscriptions were left by a First Intermediate Period nomarch named Djehutinakht, son of Teti. These inscriptions are published in facsimile for the first time, and the importance of these texts is discussed in relation to the chronology of the nomarchs of the First Intermediate Period and early Middle Kingdom in the Hare Nome. Finally, the Old Kingdom tombs at Dayr al-Barsha that contain one of these restoration texts, were excavated in search for the meaning of this restoration. The archaeological reports regarding these tombs are presented, and the discovery of the intact tomb of Henu provides the best insight in what the restoration by Djehutinakht encompassed.

This PhD thesis from FU Berlin (in German; with a preface by Jan Assmann and an English sum-mary) provides the first complete edition of “The Offering Ritual of the Egyptian New Kingdom”, formerly known as “Ritual for Amenhotep I”. The ritual’s liturgy covers the daily offering of food to Amun-Re in Karnak and comprises 51 spells for the daily cult and 17 additional spells for certain religious festivals. Part I contains a full synopsis of the liturgical texts in hieroglyphic transcription, based on a new reconstruction of the two separate Papyri Cairo CGC 58030 and Turin CGT 54041, Papyrus Chester Beatty IX, the texts of respective scene sequences in the temples of Karnak, Abydos and Medinet Habu, as well as ca 400 other textual sources from all periods of Egypt’s religious history. Part II consists of a full translation, commentary and critical apparatus of the Egyptian texts, together with an in-depth analysis of the ritual, covering its theological, historical and practical aspects, and placing it into the context of other rituals and religious structures of Ancient Egyptian religion. In that sense, the book does not only fill a long-due desideratum in Egyptology but also provides new insights relevant for audiences in the fields of theology and history of religions.

While mankind’s fascination with the scripts of ancient Egypt has been a constant across the centuries, their study as part of modern Egyptology is only as old as the decipherment of the hieroglyphs by Champollion, now nearly two centuries ago. Although we feel confident that, at least in theory, we thoroughly understand these scripts, practical difficulties in reading the cursive variants of hieratic and demotic remain. These are often such that they constantly bring to mind the sometimes abstruse associations by which the ancient scribes arrived at the various orthographies they invented for writing the complex lingual structures. Demotic is a particularly interesting case in point, as it belongs to the multi-layered textual world of the Graeco-Roman period, where hieroglyphs, hieratic and demotic are usually found in complementary use, but also occasionally in competition with each other. In their variety, the studies presented in these Acts bear witness to the rich texture of the script by investigat-ing several parameters by which it may be measured, including the reading of individual signs and grammatical categories such as verbal morphology. Indices of words and signs discussed, as well as a full bibliography of studies in monographs and articles relating to the topic, complete the volume.

In continuation of the demotic votive inscriptions collected in Short Texts Volume I, this volume brings together some 650 demotic and Greek-demotic mummy labels. These are in principle all labels published to date, but this number also contains some fifty unpublished labels as well as some fifty of which only the Greek, not the demotic side had been published previously. Of some two-hundred labels from which the names had been excerpted for use in our onomastic repertoria, the complete text is here published for the first time. In order to enhance the usefulness of this volume, also the demotic inscriptions on mummy linen, coffins, mummy boards and mummy masks, as well as those on the containers of mummified fauna and a number of small funerary papyri are included in this volume, some 260 texts in all. The volume is of course completed by Concordances with previous editions and by full Word Indices. Five Appendices treat of various textual, onomastic and palaeo-graphic problems chiefly concerning the mummy labels, which bring new insights in these domains for the Roman period.

Ce second volume de la publication finale des résultats de la mission archéologique du Louvre à Saqqara concerne les tombes hypogées de Basse Époque. Illustré de près de 1000 photographies en couleur, dessins et plans, il présente l’étude des tombes F7, F17, H, j1, Q et n1 découvertes en 2003-2007. Celles-ci sont situées au Nord de la chaussée d’Ounas, où les fouilles dirigées par Christiane Ziegler de 1991 à 2007 ont mis au jour plus de 3000 ans d’occupation humaine, de l’époque des pyramides jusqu’à la conquête arabe. Ces tombes hypogées sont exceptionnelles à plus d’un titre. La plupart étaient inviolées et leur contenu a été retrouvé dans sa disposition originelle. Elles se dis-tinguent par la qualité des objets et leur rare état de conservation. Enfin, une inscription démotique date précisément l’une d’entre elles de l’an II du pharaon Nectanébo II, 1er mois de l’inondation (21 novembre-20 décembre 360 av. J.-C.). L’ouvrage, en deux tomes, comprend la description architec-turale et archéologique des différentes tombes ainsi que le catalogue détaillé des objets qui y ont été retrouvés. Kings and gods adorn the walls of Egyptian temples in face-to-face meetings, and for two millennia these depictions have united the king and the divine. The king, the son of the god, presents his ances-tors an offering or performs a ritual. Over two hundred offerings are divided into broad categories: purification, beverages, foods, produce from the fields, fabrics, ointments and adornments; rituals for goddesses and gods; symbolic, cosmic, funerary and defensive rituals; and royal cult rituals. All are explained, from their simple action (e.g. offering beer as a daily drink) to their symbolic meaning (beer is also a sacred drink that induces ecstasy of a divine nature which annihilates the destructive force of the daughter of Ra). A drawing and photographs illustrate each offering. The title of the offering is given in hieroglyphs to enable everyone to locate the words on the temple walls. Translations of the most significant texts accompany each of the offerings. Most of the texts in this book date to the last period of Egyptian history (Graeco-Roman period, 300 B.C. to A.D. 300) where the decoration is enriched with complex inscriptions, written in so-called “Ptolemaic” that very few Egyptologists are able to translate.

TELL AHMAR III: NEO-ASSYRIAN POTTERY FROM AREA CJAMIESON A.

This study presents the Neo-Assyrian pottery from the excavations in Area C at Tell Ahmar. At least three buildings were identified in Area C. The distribution of the different pottery wares and types reflects patterns associated with the different activity areas identified within the buildings in Area C. Some wares and types were found with high degrees of frequency, other wares and types occurred infrequently. The buildings in Area C were only occupied for a short duration and this limited period of use is reflected in the ceramic evidence. The Area C pottery from Stratum 2 may be dated to the seventh century BCE, and most likely to the second half of the seventh century BCE.The Area C pottery from Tell Ahmar displays many correlations with other contemporary site assem-blages. The Tell Ahmar pottery finds close parallels with similar wares and shapes in the Assyrian heartland, especially at Nimrud. The value of the Neo-Assyrian pottery from Tell Ahmar is that it offers an extensive ceramic corpus from three closely related residential buildings of an important provincial centre located in the middle and upper Euphrates valley of the Neo-Assyrian Empire.

Arkhipov sur constitue le troisième volume de la série des Matériaux pour le Dictionnaire de Babylonien de Paris, et s’intéresse aux techniques et produits de la métallurgie et de l’orfèvrerie. Peu d’objets ont été retrouvés lors des fouilles, mais de nombreux documents administratifs et lettres donnent des descriptions souvent très précises de leur forme, de leur fabrication ou de leur emploi. Une première partie étudie le vocabulaire akkadien et ses éventuelles notations idéographiques, à partir du corpus entier des archives de Mari. Les mots y sont classés en douze catégories. La seconde partie donne l’édition de nombreux textes administratifs en ordre chronologique. Pas moins de 645 textes sont édités: 114 sont entièrement nouveaux, 531 constituent la reprise de textes déjà publiés, collationnés et parfois complétés par des joints. L’ensemble est suivi de diverses annexes. L’ouvrage montre le haut niveau technologique atteint par les ateliers syriens à cette époque ancienne. Ces témoignages écrits, issus de l’administration du palais de Mari, sont désormais à la disposition de toutes les personnes intéressées: philologues, archéologues, historiens des techniques, etc.

Excavations at Yanik Tepe were conducted by Charles A. Burney over three seasons from 1960 to 1962. The site is located to the northeast of Lake Urmia, some 20 km from Tabriz. This volume comprises the final report on the long sequences of stratigraphy and architecture belonging to the Early Trans-Caucasian (ETC) period which lasted from about 3000 BCE into the early second mil-lennium. It is argued that the ETC people who founded the village came from a long tradition of settled farming. While the first phase, ETC I, is characterised by round houses and the second, ETC II, by agglutinative rectilinear building there is strong continuity in the use of space and, particularly, of built-in kitchen ranges. The descriptive text is enhanced by numerous photographs and line draw-ings. A concluding chapter makes pertinent comment on chronology and the place of Yanik Tepe within a wider setting. A foreword by Charles Burney provides colourful background to his pioneering excavations.

Les circonstances ont dicté la matière de cet hommage: quelques études iraniennes diverses ont pris place à côté des actes d’un colloque (Liège, avril 2010) avec lequel l’Université de Liège venait de célébrer le centenaire de Jacques Duchesne-Guillemin. Le grand iranologue venait même d’y faire une dernière communication, mais allait nous quitter à près de 102 ans. L’intitulé du colloque, Le sort des Gâthâs, faisait écho à la traduction que Jacques Duchesne-Guillemin avait donnée des Gâthâs dans son Zoroastre (1948), important jalon des études de l’Iran ancien. Les principes directeurs de la rencontre étaient de traiter une question la plus précise possible et encore débattue, pour laquelle des études philologiques techniques puissent apporter une solution positive et de le faire avec un nombre restreint de participants choisis sur la seule base de leurs apports récents sur le sujet: le résultat de l’entreprise fut à la hauteur de l’hommage qu’il convenait de rendre à l’une des plus grandes figures de l’iranologie. Le thème du colloque, la réutilisation et le rôle des passages vieil-avestiques dans la littérature mazdéenne ultérieure, avestique récente, mais aussi moyen-iranienne, a été abordé de plu-sieurs façons.

Composed by Grigor Magistros, an 11th-century Armenian princely savant and friend of the Byzantine Emperor Constantine IX Monomachus (reigned 1042-55), the Magnalia Dei is a summa-tion of the Bible in epic verse. Written on one of the author’s visits to Constantinople, it resulted from an encounter there with a Moslem intellectual by the name of Manazi – none other than Abu Nasr al-Manazi, vizier and emissary of the Abbasid Caliphate, theologian and poet, who frequently visited Constantinople in quest of Greek scientific manuscripts. During their discussion on the Bible and the Qur’an, a stock Islamic argument emerged: that the Qur’an is superior to the Christian Scriptures on account of its beautiful, inimitable verse. The epic is Magistros’s response.The Magnalia Dei is the earliest literary epic in medieval Armenian, and one of the most informative compositions within the genre of biblically inspired verse narratives in Christian literature.

The Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs is a much-debated apocryphal work, but it is usually consid-ered to be a Christian work of the second century CE, including many, ancient Jewish traditions. It is of considerable significance for the history of Judaism and Christianity. The Armenian version, associated with the Armenian Bible translation, has long been considered to be a very faithful render-ing of an early Greek text. The present work is a critical editio minor of this version, based on 11 selected manuscripts of a total of over 70. It is provided with an English translation, a commentary and extensive indexes, of importance alike to Armenian textual studies and translation practice. This completes the series of critical editions of the apocryphal works most closely associated with the bibli-cal corpus in Armenian (4 Ezra - Stone, UPATS and Joseph and Asenath - Burchard, HUAS). These are some of the best editions of any Armenian biblical associated texts.

CATALOGUE OF THE ADDITIONAL ARMENIAN MANUSCRIPTS IN THE CHESTER BEATTY LIBRARY, DUBLINSTONE M.E., STONE N.

The Chester Beatty Library in Dublin has a world-famous collection of oriental manuscripts assem-bled by the late Sir Alfred Chester Beatty during the last century. A catalogue of the Armenian manuscripts was prepared by the eminent historian of Armenian art, Sirarpie Der Nersessian, in the 1950’s. The present catalogue presents some manuscripts which Dr. Der Nersessian did not catalogue and those which entered the collection after her catalogue was completed. It was prepared by Michael Stone, Professor of Armenian Studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Nira Stone, lecturer in Armenian Art at the same university. It deals in considerable detail with each manuscript, its codicology, its structure and its text (M.E. Stone) and a study of its illuminations (Nira Stone). The book contains onomastic and iconographical indexes. It completes the publication of the Armenian manuscripts of the Chester Beatty Library and will eventually be followed by a further volume dedi-cated to other Armenian holdings, notably old printed books and metal bindings.

This collection of essays deals with the phenomenon of allography, taken in the sense of the practice of writing a language in the script of another language. Although by no means all texts highlighted in the essays are of a religious character, they are written in the scripts that are connected to the three monotheistic traditions stemming from the Eastern Mediterranean: Judaism, Christianity and Islam. The time span covered ranges from Late Antiquity to (early) modern times. The volume contains studies on such cases as Aljamiado (Romance languages of Spain written in Arabic or Hebrew script but also Bosnian in Arabic script), Judaeo-Arabic, karshuni (Arabic but occasionally also other lan-guages written in Syriac script), and various combinations of languages written in the Greek, Syriac, Armenian and Georgian scripts. In each case, the approach is both philological, concentrating on the various systems of adaptation of the scripts to the phonetics of the languages in question, and his-torical, with a focus on aspects of intercultural contact and exchange, as well as on the emergence and development of the various allographic traditions over time. Particularly important questions, dis-cussed in several contributions, are whether specific communities used scripts of a language other than their own for practical or rather for ideological, identity-related considerations, and how these writing practices relate to the sociocultural contexts in which they functioned and developed.

THE ANCIENT ARMENIAN TEXT OF THE ACTS OF THE APOSTLESALEXANIAN J.M.

The purpose of this eclectic critical edition of the ancient Armenian text of the Acts of the Apostles is to provide the earliest attainable text of Acts found in the extant Armenian manuscripts. In the past, scholars have used the text of Acts in Zohrapian for text critical purposes. It is now clear that Zohrapian’s text represents the text of Acts from the Cilician Period. Our edition represents the pre-Cilician text of Acts. The text of Acts presents a challenge for New Testament textual critics. The Greek manuscripts, early versions, and patristic sources fall into two groups, the Alexandrian text-type and the Western text-type. The Armenian text is most closely aligned with the Alexandrian text-type. Agreement with the Western text is very weak.

GRECISMS IN ANCIENT ARMENIANMURADYAN G.

This book is a systematic presentation of the linguistic features in all the published Ancient Armenian texts, mainly belonging to the so-called Hellenizing School of translations (late fifth – early eighth century), which are explained by Greek influence. These features include various types of lexical, morphological and syntactical Grecisms. Many of them are also characteristic of ‘pre-Hellenizing’ translations; a few examples of some of them are found in the early classical translations from Greek. In all cases the corresponding passages of the Greek originals (if extant) are cited. Most of the sections concluded with examples of the classical translation practice of the corresponding linguistic features without any Greek influence. In an appendix, various features of Latinizing Armenian (seventeenth century) are traced back to Hellenizing Armenian.

THE CHURCHES OF SYRIAN ANTIOCH (300-638 CE)MAYER W., ALLEN P.

In The Churches of Syrian Antioch (300-638 CE) Wendy Mayer and Pauline Allen for the first time draw together all of the existing evidence concerning the Christian worship sites of this influential late-antique city, with significantly new results in a number of cases. In addition to providing a cata-logue of the worship sites, in which each entry critiques and summarizes the available data, supple-mented by photographs from the excavations, the authors analyze the data from a number of perspec-tives. These include the political, economic and natural forces that influenced the construction, alteration and reconstruction of churches and martyria, and the political, liturgical and social use and function of these buildings. Among the results is an emerging awareness of the extent of the lacunae and biases in the sources, and of the influence of these on interpretation of the city’s churches in the past. What also rises to the fore is the significant role played by the schisms within the Christian community that dominated the city’s landscape for much of these centuries.

A translation of a Logos of the Greek theologian Nikon of the Black Mountain is presented by Wim Aerts. An almost unknown anonymous enumeration of descriptions of the castles of Nureddin, written in Arabic, was made by Tevfik Buyukasik. The description of Edessa in Abu al-Makarim’s History of the Churches and Monasteries of Egypt and some neighbouring Countries was trans-lated by Clara ten Hacken. The Greek Reconquest in 969 influenced Byzantine art (Alexander Simansky). In the same period Northerners from Scandinavia are signalled in Antioch (Krijnie Ciggaar). The Latin conquest of 1098 and its aftermath are discussed by Thomas Asbridge. Jochen Burgtorf focuses on the Hospitaller Lordship of Margat. Tasha Vorderstrasse concentrates on contacts with China, Mongolia and Armenia, while Balázs Major presents material culture when discussing a mill in Valania. In the article by Laurence Delobette crusaders from Burgundy appear on the scene after 1268. The various articles stimulate further research and discussion on the various aspects of the history of this important and influential city in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Some 40 scholars discussed the concept of Byzantine “encyclopedism”, a notion coined definitively in 1971 by the French scholar Paul Lemerle as a characterization of Byzantine culture for the period 800-1000: the emphasis was not on creativity, but on collecting and copying; until very recent times the term “encyclopedism” has been repeated rather rashly in all kind of publications. Many problems have been dealt with during our congress: e.g. what are the definition and characteristics of Byzantine “encyclopedism”? Does the Byzantine understanding of this notion differ from ours? Has this really been the main feature of the period studied by Lemerle? Do these compilations mirror the broader cultural atmosphere in Byzantium? Which are the strategies (theological, literary, political) playing a part in the Byzantine art of compiling? The proceedings, containing more than 20 articles, pave the way for a prudent assess-ment of the so-called Byzantine “encyclopedism”.

The cultural and historical setting of the Near East provides a unique opportunity to study a longer usage of sealing practices in administration and magic, which extends beyond the constraints of a specific time period or region. Comparing ancient practices with more recent ones can offer important insights into the development of sealing practices and provide answers to specific questions related to the handling of seals and the social status of the seal bearer. Since the initiative towards the workshop was taken by staff members of the NVIC, the focus was on Egypt but other cultures in the Near East and Central Asia were also considered. Following up on the workshop, the present volume retains the geographical and chronological scope, but added a few contributions dealing with the Greco-Roman and Byzantine periods. Glancing at the content, the reader will be struck by the diachronic and spatial persistence of the use of seals for administrative and other purposes, and by their multi-functionality. Indeed, sealing practices appear to be at least as consistent as writing systems, from their first appear-ance to modern times. One of the reasons for their success is their ability to adapt to the diverse political, social and cultural pecularities of the multicultural societies at the time.

The NuÒayri-{Alawi faith is an excellent example of a syncretistic esoteric religion with self-conscious elite who zealously guarded its sectarian literature. The faith fuses elements of cults and creeds of ancient pagan religions, Persian religion, Christianity, Gnosticism, Sunni and especially Shi{i Islam, in a syncretistic system that is clothed in heterodox Shi{i garb. This book presents a critical edition and study of Kitab al-Ma{arif (Book of Knowledge), authored by the early 11th century sage Abu Sa{id Maymun b. Qasim al-™abarani. Al-™abarani was an outstanding communal leader and theolo-gian in the formative period of the NuÒayri religion, and became a prominent figure in the golden chain of NuÒayri tradition. This seminal work is a compendium of NuÒayri theology and liturgy, forming part of al-™abarani’s larger project to systematize the beliefs and practices of the developing religion and to consolidate its self-definition through a corpus of religious paideia. As such, this work, together with al-™abarani’s other writings, played a crucial role in transforming the meaning and practice of Islam by shaping the new religion’s identity as the true Shi{a, reminiscent of antinomian Pauline Christianity and its definition of verus Israel.

Chaque racine comme entrée est suivie, dans une première partie, des formes, transcrites et traduites, qui la représentent dans chaque langue. L’ordre dans lequel elles se succèdent est, sauf exceptions justifiées, celui-ci: akkadien, ougaritique, amorite, phénico-punique, hébreu, moabite, araménien (dia-lectes anciens et modernes), arabe (langue littéraire et dialectes), sudarabique (épigraphique et moderne), éthiopien (guèze, tigré, amharique, argobba, gafat, harari, gouragué). Si Antoine Galland (1646-1715) doit d’être passé à la postérité à sa “traduction” des Mille et une nuits, il n’en était pas moins avant tout un savant versé tant en numismatique qu’en orientalisme. Pour sou-tenir sa mémoire, il prit note, dès son adolescence, semble-t-il, mais peut-être pas de manière continue, des événements du jour qui le concernaient de près ou de loin. Ce journal, dont seuls quelques volumes nous sont parvenus, concerne deux périodes: les années 1672-1673, époque où il se trouvait à Constantinople, et les années 1708-1715, années qui correspondent à la fin de sa vie, lorsqu’il vivait à Paris. Cette dernière période est indubitablement une des plus riches sur le plan professionnel puisqu’elle voit A. Galland accéder à la plus haute fonction qu’il pouvait espérer jamais atteindre: la chaire de langue arabe au Collège royal (1709). Le journal de ces années constitue donc une source de première importance tant pour retracer les dernières années de la vie de ce savant digne représentant de la République des Lettres, qui nous fait part consciencieusement du contenu des séances bi-hebdoma-daires de la vénérable Académie royale des inscriptions, que pour reconstruire son réseau de correspon-dants, d’amis, de collègues dans ce Siècle des Lumières qui est en train de se dessiner.

En suivant certains des silllons creusés par François Georgeon, les études ici réunies se répartissent en quatre groupes. Les premières s’inscrivent dans le registre de l’histoire politique et idéologique des dernières décennies de l’époque ottomane. Elles touchent à la politisation et à la question des pro-vinces de l’Empire. Elles touchent aussi au vocabulaire politique et aux nouvelles temporalités intro-duites par la révolution jeune-turque dans la réflexion de certains intellectuels. Les secondes sont des contributions à l’histoire intellectuelle. Une place importante est faite dans cette partie à la presse et à l’imprimé, tandis qu’une dernière contribution reprend la question des intellectuels voyageurs. La troisième partie est consacrée à l’histoire sociale. Y sont abordées des thèmes divers tels que: la construction et la fluidité des identifications, les fêtes, l’alimentation, et les évolutions sociales à l’échelle urbaine, comme à l’échelle individuelle. Enfin, la quatrième et dernière partie rassemble d’un côté des études sur la Turquie kémaliste et, de l’autre, des essais sur le passage «des Ottomans aux Turcs» (pour reprendre le titre d’un volume d’articles de François Georgeon), et sur la construction des savoirs dans ce domaine.

En juillet 1908, les officiers de l’armée de Macédoine entraient en dissidence et contraignaient sous la menace le sultan d’Istanbul à rétablir la constitution ottomane, suspendue depuis trente ans, et à réunir le parlement: la révolution jeune turque était en marche. DÉTRÔNER LE SULTANDeux conjurations à l’époque des réformes ottomanes: Kuleli (1859) et Meslek (1867)

Ce livre a pour objet l’étude de deux conjurations (Kuleli en 1859 et Meslek en 1867), fomentées dans la capitale de l’Empire ottoman, Istanbul, et révélées au moment où les conjurés s’apprêtaient à passer à l’action en vue de détrôner le sultan – premières tentatives de détrônement depuis la suppression en 1826 des janissaires, qui étaient auparavant les principaux «défaiseurs» de sultans. Cet ouvrage analyse ce nouveau type de révoltes et de révoltés qui ont envisagé de «défaire» le sultan ottoman. Il s’attache à réécrire l’histoire de ces deux conjurations, à examiner leur structure, leur fonctionnement et leurs stratégies, tout en éclairant les motivations, les revendications politiques et les profils sociaux des conjurés. Il s’interroge sur les spécificités de ces deux tentatives dans le contexte des transformations sociales et politiques des années 1850 et 1860, et contribue ainsi à une meilleure compréhension des changements de l’espace politique ottoman à cette époque. Quelle était la place des «sujets» et du sultan dans la structure du pouvoir politique durant les premières décennies des Tanzimat, alors que les mentalités et les «techniques» de gouvernement de l’administration centrale étaient en train d’être reformulées et que l’opinion publique devenait un acteur politique de plus en plus influent? Telle est la question fondamentale qui est abordée tout au long ce livre.

Cet ouvrage, en hommage à Marceau Gast, explore la diversité et la richesse de l’œuvre scientifique de ce chercheur au parcours original. Lait, grain, meules, coffres, saisons, géophagie, décors géomé-triques, sandales, salutations, étoiles, parenté, alliance... L’énumération des objets et des terrains auquels s’est intéressé Marceau Gast ressemble à un inventaire à la Prévert, mais leur apparente dispa-rité poursuit une interrogation fondamentale: comment survivre en milieu extrême? C’est en effet une cohérence forte qui se dégage des questions récurrentes posées par ce chercheur qui aimait la vie: quelles solutions matérielles et immatérielles inventent les hommes pour se nourrir, se protéger, s’ap-parenter et construire leur société dans des environnements particulièrement hostiles comme la mon-tagne ou le désert qui fut pour lui également une véritable école de vie. Le livre rassemble des contri-butions qui montrent les multiples facettes de l’itinéraire, des terrains et des objets d’étude de ce chercheur original. Ethnologue, spécialiste du monde touareg, Marceau Gast a été un précurseur des études sur l’alimentation, les techniques et la culture matérielle des Touaregs de l’Ahaggar (dans les années 1960), avant de s’engager dans des thématiques d’anthropologie sociale: structures de parenté, héritage, histoire et tradition orales. L’ethnologie du Sahara central n’a pas été son unique horizon: ouvert à la comparaison, il a mené des enquêtes également en Kabylie, au Yémen, dans le Queyras et en Haute Provence et a participé à de nombreux programmes interdisciplinaires associant ethnologues, préhistoriens, anthropologues, nutritionistes, biologistes. Ses nombreux ami(e)s et collègues, du Sahara, du CRAPE (Alger), du LAPMO, de l’IREMAM (Aix-en-Provence) et d’ailleurs ont voulu à l’occasion de la rencontre organisée par Salem Chaker et Hélène Claudot-Hawad les 14 et 15 mars 2011 à Aix-en-Provence rendre hommage à l’homme et au chercheur à la carrière remarquable, par la profondeur de son ancrage dans un terrain, sa diversité et son ouverture aux disciplines connexes, son ouverture à l’Autre et aux autres, notamment aux jeunes chercheurs qu’il était toujours prêt à aider et à conseiller.

Durant la dernière phase de l’Âge du Bronze (XVIe-XIe s. av. J.-C.), la civilisation mycénienne voit le jour et s’épanouit en Grèce continentale. Alors que la découverte des tombes à fosse de Mycènes et des tombes à tholos de Messénie a attiré l’attention sur le Péloponnèse, la Grèce centrale se révèle également sensible aux changements culturels qui se sont produits dès la fin de l’Helladique Moyen. Si la faute a fait l’objet d’études en lien avec la tragédie, le thème de l’infraction (recouvrant, plus largement, erreur et faute) reste peu étudié dans l’œuvre de Thucydide. Comment l’historien, qui affirme présenter les faits sans filtre, aborde-t-il cette question à une époque où les notions de respon-sabilité et de culpabilité font l’objet d’une réévaluation? Cette étude démontre la place que prend l’erreur dans la perspective didactique de l’œuvre. L’étude lexicale des termes exprimant l’infraction (hamartanein et adikein) établit ainsi leurs nuances d’emploi, en particulier dans les relations entre cités. Les jeux, flottements ou distorsions imposés à cette distinction dans les nombreux discours de l’œuvre sont également mis au jour. Enfin, ces manipulations étant récurrentes, la forme elle-même du discours, en tant que vecteur de l’erreur, se voit examinée. Ce faisant, cet ouvrage questionne l’intention de Thucydide dans la construction de l’œuvre.

Despite the difficulties of reconstructing the grammar of a dead language, studying Ancient Greek offers new insights for linguistic theory. The morphological complexity of the Greek verb with its highly intricate inflectional system provides a valuable basis for an in-depth analysis of the mecha-nisms which regulate the functioning of a language. Studies on the Ancient Greek verb have also contributed significantly to the reconstruction of the Indo-European language since the early history of Linguistics in the nineteenth century. The conservative features preserved in the oldest stages of Greek allow us to rely on a solid basis to which every linguist must refer in investigating a model of the Proto-Indo-European verb. The contributions of this book analyze phonological, morphological, syntactic and semantic phenomena from various areas of grammar pertaining to the verb, using a large corpus which ranges mostly from Homeric to Classical Greek. There is diversity in the topics covered, and the papers also adopt different theoretical frameworks, both synchronic and diachronic, and develop diverse approaches.

Darkness in literature manifests itself as a fascination with the evil passions of man, an emphasis on the ugly and the monstrous, an obsession with morbidity and death, a blurring of the boundaries between reality and imagination; its effect ranges from pleasure in the representation of horror to the overwhelming sense of the sublime. The premise that these trends find their most powerful expression in Romantic literature forms the basis for the exploration of darkness in Hellenistic poetry in the present study: Apollonius’ Argonautica, a dark romance building around a heroic quest, is read against the background of fantasy literature and the Gothic novel; Lycophron’s Alexandra, a dark remake of Kassandra’s prophecy, is seen as an extreme paradigm of Gothic aesthetics; Nicander’s Theriaca and Alexipharmaca, two didactic poems on snakes and their antidotes, are reviewed in the light of Romantic science and the aesthetics of Decadence. The introduction provides the theoretical framework where key notions are discussed – the fantastic, the Gothic, the grotesque, the uncanny –, whereas the after-word offers an explanation for the parallelism between the Hellenistic and the Romantic era by refer-ence to their ideological and cultural contexts. The Aesthetics of Darkness is a comparative study which combines the ‘close reading’ of the Greek texts with literary criticism as well as with specific examples drawn from nineteenth-century literature; by thus transcending the boundaries of conventional schol-arship, the book attempts to capture the Romantic awakenings of post-Classical literature.

This book contains the papers of the ‘Groningen Workshop on Hellenistic Poetry 9: Gods and Religion’. The volume focuses on two aspects of the function of gods and religion in the new poetry of the Hellenistic age which turned out to be particularly striking. On the one hand there is a certain emphasis on the relations between poetry and various aspects of religion in the world outside the text. On the other hand several papers deal with the tendency of Hellenistic poets to modernize the Olympian gods of the past or to shift focus from them to (somewhat) ‘lesser’ or to female gods and to the position of mortals in relation to the gods. On a more general level the volume may help to show how notions of gods and religion, however modernized, even at this comparatively late date still pervade most of Greek poetry.

This research, a unique compilation of scattered material, focused on a reconstruction of the sources of the European system of values embedded in the philosophy of Greco-Roman culture. The author is convinced that the Aegean cultures of the Bronze and Early Iron Ages are to be seen as the dissoci-ated links in a long chain uniting an infant Europe with the maternal womb of Eurasia. He carried out on the spiritual world of the Bronze Age man, his relation to nature, his notions of life and death, space and time, his critical values and aesthetic tastes. A detailed description of Greek society and its culture during the period of the so-called Dark Ages is given, and finally special attention has been paid to the critical 8th century BC, the century of Homer, which marks the actual starting point of the history of Ancient Greece. The significance of this manuscript is that all evidence that excavations have revealed, has been incorporated.

The earliest European specimens of visual poetry are found in the literature of the ancient Greeks: these are six famous technopaegnia, which were composed between the end of the fourth century BC and the first half of the second century AD by poets such as Simias of Rhodes, a scholar-poet and precursor of Callimachus, or Iulius Vestinus, an important official at Hadrian’s court. The present book provides an edition of the six Greek figure poems, which is accompanied by an extensive com-mentary and the introduction to various aspects of this mini-genre. This is the first such comprehen-sive treatment of the six technopaegnia in 125 years.

In the Roman period, construction and maintenance of civic monuments and infrastructure were regarded as the normal duty of well-off citizens. For the subsequent centuries, encompassing the 4th to the 7th century AD, changing social and political conditions within the Roman Empire assumingly resulted in a severe reduction of expenditure and concurrent loss of sentimental and aesthetic attitudes towards public space. This book challenges this assumption. It reconstructs how cities of the Eastern Mediterranean in late antique and Early Byzantine times represented themselves towards outsiders by assessing the care given to urban fortifications, streets and squares, decorative and religious monu-ments and, finally, statuary. Thereafter, the architectural changes that distinguished these centuries from previous times are discussed. The book then evaluates the identity and motives of the diverse initiators of interventions, as well as the skills and work organisation of the actual constructors. Finally, the priorities of the users of public space, as well as their responses to it, are explored.

The ‘Regionalism and Globalism in Antiquity’ conference, held in Vancouver on March 16-17, 2007, aimed to investigate in fresh ways how regional and global phenomena in the ancient Mediterranean, Near East and Eurasia shaped local life. Still today two models tend to guide explanations of intercultural and interregional contact and interaction: diffusionism from cores (or centres) to peripheries, involving ‘superior’ civilisations influencing other ‘inferior’ ones, and Mediterraneanism, the set of distinctive environmental, cultural and historical images that create a unified and unchanging view of the Mediterranean. These two models have come under increasing scrunity since the 1980s, as we have been living in a world of shifting perceptions of time and space and of greater interconnectedness that affects our everyday lives in numerous ways. The source of these shifts has been credited to globalisation, and with it has also come a greater historical appreciation of the phenomenon, including the recognition that the world has witnessed periods of globalisation since the end of the Ice Age. DIE GRABRELIEFS AUS DEM BOSPORANISCHEN REICHKREUZ P.-A.

The book discusses the grave stelai and grave reliefs from the Bosporan kingdom. Occupying the east-ern Crimea and the Taman Peninsula on the northern shore of the Black Sea, this ancient Greek state was situated in an important contact zone of the ancient Greek world. The permanent interaction of Greeks and indigenous peoples (the Scythians, others and later the Sarmatians) in this region resulted in a dynamic local culture. Subjected to long-term acculturation processes, this culture reflected ele-ments of Greek and indigenous traditions. In this respect, the grave stelai erected in Bosporan necrop-oleis and their numerous relief depictions dating from the 5th century BC to the 3rd century AD are a unique source: they provide us not only with pictorial evidence for local identities, but are, ultimately, also of great value for our understanding of the development and transformation of this local culture in general. The book deals with problems of typology, stylistic developments and the (re-)evaluation of the chronology of the reliefs. A comprehensive catalogue of over 1200 published grave monuments, including detailed descriptions, bibliographical references and information about find-spots etc. (based on analysis of literature and study in relevant archives and museums) completes the publication.

PROSOPOGRAPHIA PONTI EVXINI EXTERNAAVRAM A.

Although there are specialist studies on the mobility of the inhabitants of the cities and regions of the Black Sea, we lack a comprehensive prosopography of those of them active abroad. This work, con-taining 3358 entries, is a first attempt, casting light on the mobility of different social and professional groups, not only mercenaries and merchants but also itinerant philosophers and artists. It demon-strates that the Black Sea was well integrated into the main circles of the Greek, Roman and Early Byzantine world. Chronologically, the work starts with the earliest attestations and finishes with the end of the 6th century AD. It includes not only people attested by external documents but also per-sons mentioned by internal inscriptions as having travelled or died outside their country. The area of investigation covers the entire Black Sea coast. The Prosopographia Ptolemaica is used as a model. Each entry follows a set form: name; family relationships (father/mother, son/daughter, brother/sister); type of inscription or category of papyrus; profession or further data on the person’s activity; form of the ethnic; dating; testimonies and bibliographical references. For each heading the geographical order of attestations is that of the SEG. There are very detailed indexes (names, cases of double or multiple citizenship, proxenies or other honours awarded abroad, professional categories, etc.).

This monograph provides a brief introduction to the material history of Ostia, Rome’s harbour town from ca 300 BC until ca AD 600, before centring on about one hundred Latin as well as some Greek inscriptions, some of which are previously unpublished. It focuses on inscriptions which are still pres-ent in situ, in forty-two places. They range in date from ca 100 BC until ca AD 420. They belong to and cast light upon buildings, monuments, urban spaces and tombs. Some of them were reused in floors after ca AD 250. Each inscription is presented in full, supplemented by abbreviated names and words, translated into English, dated and commented upon from a contextual point of view. Sometimes inscriptions that are not in situ, as well as relevant ancient texts, are quoted and translated in order to sketch a broader picture. The comments are based on a critical evaluation of the most recent archaeological, historical and epigraphic publications. Several new interpretations result from own research. The inscriptions cast light upon political, socio-economic, religious (pagan and Christian), and funerary aspects of the multi-ethnic Ostian society, its relation with Rome and the Mediterranean world. The publication is intended not only for scholars, teachers and students, but also for historians, classicists, philologists, linguists, epigraphists, archaeologists and art historians. It may also prove a useful vademecum for those who intend to visit or have visited Ostia Antica.

In this study we have thoroughly documented the various decorations of walls and vaults in the building underneath the Baths of Trajan. This edifice was part of Nero’s Domus Aurea, situated in the Augustan Regio III alongside the southern slope of the Colle Oppio in the modern Parco delle Terme di Traiano. This building was a large pavilion within Nero’s properties which extended over the Oppius and Esquiline hills. It was built after the Great Fire of July AD 64, which devastated a large part of the centre of Rome and gave the Emperor the occasion to fulfill a long-fostered wish, i.e. that of connecting his properties (forming more or less a series of horti) with the official palace on the Palatine. It has a depth of 55 to 60 metres and its actual length is around two hundred metres. Some hundred and fifty rooms have been preserved. The height of the rooms varies between ten and eleven metres.

Im Sinne einer integralen Konzeption von Geschichte stellen Forscher verschiedener Disziplinen unterschiedliche Aspekte des antiken Badewesens dar: Technische Gesichtspunkte etwa, wie die zentrale Frage nach der Wasserver- und -entsorgung oder der Beheizung. L’étude porte spécifiquement sur les mécanismes anaphoriques, cataphoriques et déic-tiques mis en œuvre par les pronoms-adjectifs is, hic, iste, ille et par les adverbes faits sur le même thème. Le choix de l’œuvre intégrale de Plaute a été dicté par l’archaïsme de sa langue et par le registre de langue familière qui ajoute des connotations spécifiques aux emplois des pronoms-adjectifs et des adverbes déictiques. Une analyse approfondie de l’ensemble de leurs emplois a permis un affinement de leur sens et, par là même, un affinement de leur traduction, qui, si elle est mécanique, laisse échap-per d’importants effets de sens. L’analyse proposée s’appuie en premier lieu sur les faits de grammaire mais aussi sur l’interprétation scénique du texte; cette interprétation permet de dégager des nuances importantes dont il faut rendre compte dans une approche discursive.

Une tra-duction en français, précédée d’une introduction générale à l’œuvre et à son auteur, permet de rédé-couvrir ce roman trop négligé; un appareil de notes, centré sur la langue et le style de l’auteur, met en évidence ses spécificités lexicales et syntaxiques.

The present study proposes a challenging new chronological framework for the Herodian age, a critical period in Jewish history. Not only do the rules of Herod the Great and his sons receive altered time settings, but the birth and death of Jesus are also placed several years later than is generally accepted. As a consequence of this the dates of Paul’s apostolate are reexamined. Ostensibly narrow in scope, these modifications entail far-reaching implications for our understanding of the Syro-Palestinian region at the beginning of the present era. Interconnections between numerous events are established and tensions within and between the Herodian and Hasmonean dynasties are laid bare. It is shown that Roman impact on the East was substantial, with a strong Hellenistic influence exerted on local cultures. Several customs of the Jewish and early Christian communities, hitherto unknown, are also brought to light. Both in its details and in its overall sweep this important work sets up a stimulating reference point for future historical investigations of the Herodian and New Testament worlds.

Le présent ouvrage porte sur le Midrash Hallel, un recueil rabbinique peu connu qui commente de manière presque exhaustive les Psaumes qui composent une prière fondamentale, celle du Hallel (Ps 113-118). Il tient compte du seul manuscrit existant de ce Midrash (Munich 222) et de ses trois éditions imprimées (celle d’A. Jellinek en 1873, celle de J.D. Eisenstein en 1915 et la version anonyme des presses de Traklin, publiée à Varsovie en 1924), pour en donner une première traduction. Il tente d’éclairer la relation qu’il entretient avec la reste de la littérature rabbinique classique, tout particuliè-rement avec le Midrash Tehillim. Il s’interroge enfin sur son caractère éventuellement mystique. Le Roman pseudo-clémentin, actuellement décliné en deux versions, l’une grecque (les Homélies), l’autre latine (les Reconnaissances), est l’un des documents les plus précieux et les plus difficiles d’interprétation du christianisme primitif. En effet, quoique relevant de l’univers fictionnel, il constitue notre meilleure source pour la connaissance du judéo-christianisme antique. Ce recueil d’études se propose comme but de montrer comment et dans quel dessein est né le Roman, par fusion de différentes traditions. La principale thèse qui y est développée concerne sa genèse: le Roman serait né de la transformation d’un récit d’origine juive, mettant en scène le consul Flavius Clemens, parent de Domitien, exécuté en 95 pour «mœurs juives». Un rédacteur chrétien ultérieur (fin du IIe ou début du IIIe siècle) en aurait repris la trame narrative en identifiant ce Clemens à Clément Romain, le quatrième «évêque» de Rome selon la tradition eusébienne, et en mêlant à l’intrigue originelle, celle d’un roman de reconnaissances, une seconde trame narrative, centrée sur l’affrontement entre l’apôtre Pierre et Simon dit le Magicien. Le sens de cette étrange confusion est à chercher dans les options théologiques du rédacteur, pour lequel le christianisme est un aboutissement et un accomplissement du judaïsme, tandis que le disciple de Jésus le prophète doit être considéré tout simplement comme le seul vrai juif.

LES CANTIQUES DES DEGRÉS (PSAUMES 119-133) SELON LA BIBLE GRECQUE DES SEPTANTEBOUET F.

Les psaumes 119-133 de la Bible grecque des Septante (120-134 de la Bible hébraïque) forment un ensemble de quinze psaumes intitulés successivement «Cantiques des degrés». Ce type de regroupe-ment, sans équivalent dans le psautier, et le titre énigmatique ont suscité bon nombre de questions: ces quinze psaumes étaient-ils dits sur un ton qui montait «graduellement», étaient-ils chantés par les exilés sur le chemin qui «montait» de Babylone à Jérusalem ou par les pèlerins qui «montaient» dans la cité sainte trois fois l’an, étaient-ils récités sur les quinze marches du temple, etc.? Par rapport aux recherches modernes centrées sur l’hébreu, l’étude de la version grecque de ces psaumes apporte des éléments aux débats sur le sens du titre et l’homogénéité de cet ensemble. Après un bref exposé métho-dologique, le texte grec est traduit en français. La confrontation des Cantiques des degrés de la Septante avec le texte hébreu massorétique, les données de Qumrân, et avec les autres versions grecques et latines, permet d’en dégager les traits propres. Une typologie des différences du grec par rapport à l’hébreu est proposée, ainsi qu’une analyse des caractéristiques littéraires et poétiques de ces psaumes de la Septante. L’impact des variantes entre le grec et l’hébreu est éclairé par le recours aux traditions d’interprétation chrétiennes et juives anciennes.

La communauté rurale de Schmalkalden, tiraillée entre Hesse et Thuringe, connaît en effet des péripéties qui se situent fort loin du conflit entre la réforme et l’orthodoxie, qu’il s’agisse de ses relations houleuses avec les employés communautaires ou de celles, ambiguës, avec le rabbin de la province. Située sur le territoire de ce qui allait devenir l’Allemagne de l’est, non loin du camp de Buchenwald, les événements qui se sont déroulés à Schmalkalden entre 1933 et 1945 y font l’objet d’un traitement particulier dès la fin du régime nazi. L’examen des docu-ments datant de l’après-guerre permettent par ailleurs de mettre en évidence qu’une politique d’occul-tation du génocide ne s’est formée que progressivement et différentiellement dans les deux Allemagne. À partir d’une micro-histoire, il s’agit donc de rendre compte de la spécificité du judaïsme rural, mais aussi d’envisager une petite communauté dans son contexte provincial et national en tant que para-digme sans cesse confronté avec l’histoire des juifs d’Allemagne, de mettre au jour les modalités de la construction de l’objet de recherche «juifs allemands», et surtout les enjeux différentiels des «com-manditaires» et les structures narratives mises en œuvre pour élaborer leur expérience collective.

Cet ouvrage est une étude de l’idéologie royale de la dynastie des Pallava qui prospérèrent dans le sud de l’Inde du IVème au IXème siècle. Ces rois hindous ont laissé des sources diverses et nombreuses qui donnent accès à leur conception du monde et de la société, en particulier à leur représentation de la royauté. Cette étude montre, en examinant des éloges épigraphiques et iconographiques, mais aussi les monnaies et un poème de cour en tamoul, qu’il existe à côté du modèle brahmanique de la subor-dination du roi au brahmane, un discours royal propre, voire contestataire. Le point de divergence crucial est la prétention des Pallava au double de statut de rois et de brahmanes. La royauté s’affirme ainsi comme indépendante de la classe brahmanique en l’intégrant dans son lignage, réalisant ainsi en elle-même l’union des pouvoirs «temporel» et «spirituel». Ce premier tome contient l’introduction et la présentation des sources de cette étude. Sa première partie est une introduction à la royauté hindoue et à la dynastie des Pallava (origine, histoire, art). Dans la deuxième partie est établi et présenté le corpus des sources considérées comme témoignant du discours royal, à distinguer d’autres sources qui ne sont pas royales, mais locales. Cette deuxième partie se conclut par une réflexion sur le panégyrique royal et sur la nature des sources royales (émetteurs, fonction, récepteurs).

Au fil des chapitres sont ainsi abordés le problème de l’origine du genre féminin, des désinences casuelles, le rôle des pronoms, la formation de la conju-gaison thématique, l’expression du temps et de l’aspect, les cinq conjugaisons latines, etc. La syntaxe est essentiellement abordée à travers la morphologie.

Le Jaiminiyasaμhita, en partie inédite, est une œuvre puranique de nature «encyclopédique». Dans une section de six chapitres intitulée «La question de Janaka» (Janakaprasna), le roi Kartaviryarjuna rend visite à Dattatreya, afin de recevoir un enseignement sur l’advaita, la «non-dualité». Ce dernier lui rap-porte l’enseignement que le sage Asita transmit autrefois au roi mythique Janaka. Cette «question de Janaka», à l’instar des UpaniÒad, se présente sous la forme d’un dialogue entre un maître et un disciple. La thématique au cœur de ce dialogue concerne la nature du brahman et son rapport au corps. Elle permet à l’auteur de faire montre de l’étendue de son savoir dans des domaines aussi riches que variés: le développement embryonaire et les théories physiologiques, les conceptions cosmogoniques, les para-doxes de la non-dualité et les disciplines de salut, en particulier le yoga, influencé par des conceptions tantriques. «L’Incantation de Pu’an» compte parmi les rares pièces de musique chinoise à faire partie aujourd’hui de répertoires aussi différents que ceux des moines, des paysans, des ménétriers, des lettrés, des notables, des professionnels des conservatoires et du concert. Elle trouve sa source dans une incanta-tion bouddhique dont la plus ancienne version connue, malgré son attribution à Pu’an, maître de méditation du XIIe siècle, figure, paroles et musique, dans un recueil pour cithare de 1592, avant même sa publication dans un livre bouddhique en 1600. Elle s’est transmise inchangée dans les temples, avec peu de transformations dans les répertoires paraliturgiques, alors que les versions actuelles pour cithare, sans paroles, sont devenues totalement méconnaissables, malgré une transmission notée sans interruption. Son texte, qui n’apparaît que dans un contexte liturgique ou paraliturgique, consiste en une série d’invocations suivies d’un envoi dédié à Pu’an encadrant une sorte de formule magique dérivée, par un long chemin, du syllabaire sanskrit sous sa forme siddham. Cette étude inédite com-bine approche du bouddhisme chinois, en particulier l’adaption de la notion indienne de son sacré, et ethnomusicologie; elle met en valeur les relations entre genres réputés séparés (campagne et ville, temples, cour et théâtre) en les examinant dans la perspective d’une anthropologie religieuse.

Le mûrier a donné naissance à la soie par sa feuille, nourriture essentielle du ver à soie. Grâce à cette place incontournable dans la sériciculture, le mûrier s’est profondément incorporé dans la vie sociale et culturelle chinoise. Il a été progressivement façonné comme sujet rituel, mythologique et légendaire, aux fonctions et statuts divers: arbre ancestral, arbre sacré, arbre solaire, arbre de souveraineté, arbre exorciste, abre d’immortalité. Chen Cheng servit comme fonctionnaire du corps des envoyés diplomatiques sous les trois premiers empereurs Ming. Cette recherche vise à retrouver la trace de ce personnage pour lui redonner vie dans son époque. Elle tente de présenter la vision des royaumes étrangers que pouvait avoir un voyageur chinois de cette époque fortement marqué par sa propre tradition. La politique de Yongle (1405-1424) tira son originalité d’une ouverture accrue sur le monde chinois, jusque vers un Occident lointain, où les envoyés impériaux se rendirent par voies de terre et de mer. La notoriété de Chen Cheng tient surtout à ses relations de voyages en Asie centrale. Sous le règne de Yongle, l’envoyé impérial se rendit par trois fois auprès du fils de Tamerlan, Shahrukh, en sa capitale Herat. Au retour de sa première mission, en 1415, il présenta à la cour le «Journal de voyage dans les terres d’Occident» et le «Mémoire sur les royaumes indigènes des terres d’Occident». Pour compenser la secheresse de son Journal, Chen Cheng nous offrit ses «Poèmes de route». Si le chemin à travers les déserts et les montagnes n’est pas décrit minitieusement, on peut y suivre de loin en loin le cheminement mental de l’auteur et ressentir avec lui quelques émotions du voyage: joies, déconvenues, surprises, inquié-tudes mais aussi l’amusement de découvrir. Chen Cheng n’est pas une figure dominante du panthéon des lettrés chinois, mais il est sûrement représentatif d’une élite talentueuse et cultivée de son temps, fidèlement dévouée à l’institution impériale.
