Younger Than SpringtimeHeritage Pointe Celebrates Four Centenarians This Year

In 1920 the Great War had ended, women were guaranteed the right to vote, and the washing machine was a new-fangled invention. The stereo, Internet and smart phone had yet to arrive, but four Heritage Pointe Residents had made their first appearance. These centenarians celebrate their 100th birthdays

this year, and we can’t wait to celebrate with them!

Helen, a petite lady with short dark hair and a mischievous smile, has a few tips on the best ways to live to be 100.

“Have nice children,” she says. “Have nice families, and the rest is easy.” Luckily, Helen was blessed with an amazing family: Two children, seven grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

Helen explains the two inventions during her lifetime that impacted her the most were the telephone and the electric food processor.

“Making latkes are so much easier!” she exclaims. The best days of her long life have centered around events when her children were honored, such as her son’s ordination as a rabbi many years ago. “My motto is to help your children as much as you can,” she proclaims.

Helen’s family is living proof of her love. The great-grandchildren call Heritage Pointe “Camp Bubbe” because this is where their bubbe (and all the other bubbes) live.

Morris was the first Heritage Pointe Resident to turn 100 in 2020!

Morris and his lovely wife, Rita, moved into Heritage Pointe in 2012 when Morris was age 92 and Rita was 88. Originally from New York, Morris and Rita met after the war and were married in 1946. Morris attended optometry school on the GI Bill. Eventually, they settled in Newburgh, NY, where they raised five children.

After retiring the Ossaises began “snow birding” to Laguna Woods

where they met Heritage Pointe Volunteer Coordinator, Loretta Modelevsky. And the rest is history!

Morris says he could not have accomplished anything without the encouragement and assistance of his life partner and love, Rita.

To celebrate his milestone, Morris headlined a virtual concert on his birthday in May with Heritage Pointe’s Executive Assistant Tami Olsen on the keyboard. He sang, told stories about his life, and even danced a bit of soft shoe!

“The best time of your life is the one you’re living in.” That is sage advice from 100-year old Shirley, who has seen it all. Her early years in New York City’s Lower East Side were hard. “It was the slums. Except I have looked it up online on Google Earth…and it’s still the slums!” she chuckles.

She remembers meals cooked by kerosene stove and what an improvement it was when they finally got gas installed. To Shirley, the “best invention” of her lifetime was “having food on the table when you are hungry.” As a child, her family was poor and often hungry. While most youngsters went home for lunch during the school year, Shirley and her younger brother

stayed at school because there was no food for them at home. A kind teacher noticed their plight and began “accidentally” bringing three sandwiches for lunch every day to share.

Her father contracted tuberculosis and moved to the mountains of Denver, Colorado, where he would lie immobile for a year. The rest of the family followed later. Shirley didn’t see much of her father throughout her high school years.

Among her accomplishments, Shirley was an amazing parent herself. Proud mother of four sons, she made sure that each child became a strong, independent Jewish person. “Parents are very difficult to raise,” quips Shirley, understating her role in the lives of her children and grandchildren. Shirley has lived

at Heritage Pointe for 11 years and celebrated her birthday in June. She continues to celebrate the “best time of her life” here!

Hanni, who turned 99 in late December, is looking forward to another year of family and friends. “After all,” she boasts with a twinkle in her eye, “I’ve cheated death three times already.”

Born in Berlin two months premature, she was not expected to live. Ignoring the doctors’ prognosis, her mother made sure Hanni thrived. “So that’s number one!” says Hanni.

Her parents were successful German Jews and did not believe that the rise of Nazis would hurt them, so they remained in Berlin—until the day when Hanni’s father was told that he would be hung

because he was Jewish and the rest of the family was next to be killed. The family immediately grabbed their papers, left, and booked passage on a ship bound for America. “And that is number two!” Hanni counts.

They could only book a cabin over the ship’s boiler room. During the voyage, as the family was eating dinner elsewhere on board, the boiler room suffered an explosion and their cabin was destroyed. But the family was unharmed, although they disembarked with even less luggage than they started.

“And that,” exclaims Hanni, “is number three!”

Living alone during the COVID-19 crisis has been hard for everyone---but especially for seniors who are most at risk. Thankfully, every Resident at Heritage Pointe has been both safe and supported during these challenging times.

This crisis demonstrates the value of living in a community that supports an independent lifestyle combined with individual care and support.

Residents at Heritage Pointe, the only Jewish assisted living and memory care facility in Orange County, are living a much easier and better life because they made the decision to move into the community.

The support system for Residents remains intact. Residents enjoy delicious kosher meals cooked for them, healthcare checks in their home twice daily, and plenty of friends and safe activities every day.

Here is how Heritage Pointe has managed this healthcare crisis:

Starting in March, Heritage Pointe restricted visits from volunteers, vendors, entertainers, and family members. Details about the virus were still emerging, but information coming from the Centers for Disease Control and local authorities urged caution and keeping everyone apart until they knew more. As state and local authorities issued more strict guidelines, the communal Dining Room was closed. Instead, Residents began to receive room-service style custom meals delivered directly to their apartments. Residents also have their temperatures taken twice daily and recorded for signs of change.

Staff members were immediately required to wear masks and those who interacted directly with Residents wore additional safety equipment. Heritage Pointe next began to take the temperatures of every staff member entering the building and checked everyone for COVID symptoms during every shift. Outside deliveries have been screened and sanitized before being carried through the hallways to a Resident’s home.

The strict measures are paying off in terms of healthy Residents and a healthy staff! Mike Silverman, CEO of Heritage Pointe, credits Residents themselves as the catalyst for success.

“Residents quickly complied with the restrictions and have been appreciative of all of the ways we keep them safe and healthy, “Mike says with a smile. “They certainly miss their families, their visitors, and all of the other activities that everyone all over the country has been missing, too! But they understand that staying apart from their loved ones now is how they will stay healthy throughout this crisis.”

No one knows what the “new normal” will look like this summer or beyond. Whatever it is, Heritage Pointe Residents and their families will have the peace of mind that comes from knowing that they are not alone. We will face it together.

Heritage Pointe is proud to display new artwork in different wings and on different floors of the campus. Beautiful letters spell out Jewish values in Hebrew, and each includes an English definition and explanation of why that particular Jewish value is important to our community.

Heritage Pointe reinforces our commitment to practicing these values:• PracticeKindness• ShowCompassion• ShowRespectforourElders, and • PreformActsofKindness.

Mike Silverman, CEO of Heritage Pointe, is excited about the next stage of using the artwork to reach out to the community. “I’d love to do walking tours of the campus with Jewish students,” he says. “I will be showing them our values as we show them our home.”

To learn how you and your family can sponsor a wall of Jewish values, contact Beth Slavin, Director or Philanthropy at (949) 276-6232.

On May 18, Heritage Pointe was scheduled to hold its 30th Annual Luncheon & Boutique featuring Henry Winkler. Online RSVPs were booming in early January, and continued to arrive through February and mid-March. We expected a sold-out event, with over 42 out of 60 tables sold to community members, patrons, and sponsors from the San Fernando Valley to San Diego County.

In mid-March, everything came to a screeching halt due to the COVID-19 virus.

It was clear that no one knew how this virus would affect the world, let alone the numerous organizations relying upon donor gifts to support their budgets and missions. It became my personal mission to reach out to our donors by phone and email to assure them Heritage Pointe would be

accountable: We would refund or hold their donation for a future date. The phone conversations were amazing. All of them included one universal comment: Please take care of yourselves and the Residents. For me, it was truly a heartwarming experience, and I thank each and everyone of you for your thoughts and concerns.

It is now the Summer, and we are hoping that our world will return to the way it once was—but when? Major unbudgeted expenses for personal protection equipment for all employees, additional biodegradable containers for food served to Residents three times daily and reduction in staff have impacted the organization greatly.

We will wait for an end to the pandemic and G-d willing, celebrate with Henry Winkler at our annual Luncheon and Boutique in 2021. In the meantime, I ask that you continue to support our Mothers and Fathers as Jewish tradition teaches us. As we all wait for the day when our lives can come back to our “new normal,” I ask you to please go to https://heritagepointe.org and please give generously to the COVID-19 Appeal. Please continue to be safe and keep well and know that you and your family are in our thoughts and prayers.

We Continue Caring in the Time of Covid

Page 8: Pointe of View

During the COVID-19 crisis, we know that we are staying apart today so we can be together later. But let’s face it, physical distancing is hard—especially on Seniors, where social connection is more important than ever to maintaining overall health and quality of life.

While our Residents are safely staying in their apartments— equipped with all of the supplies and food they need—they miss their family, visitors, and volunteers.

For months, the facility has been restricted from visitors to

reduce the chance of infection. To help compensate, Heritage

Pointe put out a call for help to local synagogues, community organizations, and websites like volunteermatch.org. We asked: HelpusMakeaGrandparentSmile!

Volunteers, especially children, were asked to brighten the day for our Residents with letters, artwork, and photos. Some grandchildren of current Residents shared photos of themselves with their grandparent. Many children sent in photos of a favorite grandparents

and told us about the positive influence grandparents have on grandchildren. By offering love and guidance, imparting wisdom, passing on traditions, and making memories, grandparents offer a legacy youngsters value.

These photographs, letters, and artwork were all scanned and digitally uploaded to an in-house closed-circuit TV channel for Residents. Everyone enjoyed the attention and creativity of the volunteers.

Until life can return to normal, reminding our Residents that they are special goes a long way.

Activities Director Myra Rubin uses everything in her toolbox to keep Residents engaged during the COVID-19 crisis. She meets with Residents for their input on how to offers programs that can be done while following physical distancing guidelines.

One strategy is to use the Heritage Pointe in-house TV channels as a substitute for gatherings. A special channel is linked to a live camera in the synagogue, so that events from religious services to town hall meetings are livestreamed directly to each Resident’s apartment.

Because family and volunteers are restricted from entering the facility, even staff members provide entertainment for Residents using the live synagogue camera.

It turns out, our staff has got talent! Executive Assistant Tami Olsen has accrued quite a fanbase among Residents for her keyboard covers of songs from the ‘50s and ‘60s. “I love performing

for Residents knowing how appreciative they are for a live performance during these times of uncertainty,” Tami says.

Myra showcases two theatrically-released movies every day on an in-house TV channel. One Resident explains, “It’s good to watch the same movie as my neighbors because it is something we can talk about besides the pandemic and the news.”

MaintainingConnectionsIn fact, a new in-house channel

debuted June 2. It features themed programs from the Internet and YouTube. Because navigating the web can be difficult for Residents, this option offers virtual travel tours, world famous orchestras, funny animal videos, art museums, and other entertainment that everyone can easily enjoy from the comfort of home.

Myra creates weekly calendars and newsletters to update and connect Residents. She also

organizes brain teasers and quizzes, which are distributed to every apartment before the answers are read live on the in-house TV channel later in the week.

For Residents who are comfortable venturing out around Heritage Pointe’s expansive campus, we hold at least two events daily. We use larger rooms to host smaller groups who sign up in advance. Exercise classes are held daily and livestreamed simultaneously. Popular events such as bingo, trivia, and word games are also held weekly.

Most important, staff keep Residents connected through phone calls and messages, making sure everyone is healthy and comfortable. Everyone receives a temperature reading twice a day, and staff are masked and gloved whenever they are working directly with a Resident. Heritage Pointe has worked hard to ensure our facility is COVID-19 free and a vibrant community.

Resident Marta Lightner From Survivor to Soldier

When Marta Lightner recalls her life, she is clearly proud of her role helping to build the young state of Israel. But at her birth in Michalovce, Czechoslovakia (now Slovakia) in 1934, it hardly seemed likely.

Marta lived an idyllic childhood surrounded by loving parents, her older sister Lydia, grandparents and many relatives. Her father, Marek Goldstein, owned a prosperous hardware store on the town’s main street. These carefree years ended abruptly in March 1939 when Slovakia became a Nazi puppet state.

DifficultChoicesFearing the worst, her parents

made the difficult decision to smuggle Lydia to live with an uncle in Budapest. Marta was to follow later with her grandfather, but their attempt to cross the border failed and they had to return. Following the occupation of Hungary by the Nazis, the Goldsteins desperately tried to sneak Lydia back home— but when she was caught crossing the border, Marta’s sister was arrested and deported to Auschwitz.

Their lives would have turned out very differently, but for the kindness and courage of others who risked themselves to help Marta and her family.

Lydia was too young to work at Auschwitz—which meant death—but she was spared the gas chambers when her former kindergarten teacher intervened. As a kapo (a prisoner in charge of other prisoners), her teacher risked her own life by changing Lydia’s documents to make her three years older. This made Lydia eligible for work—and survival.

“The rations she shared gave Lydia strength to survive the brutal conditions,” Marta explains.

Marta and her parents fled west to a Slovak town called Trnava. They moved into a small apartment in a building owned by the Blataks, who gave her father work. Wealthy and respected, the Blataks themselves faced danger because Mrs. Blatak was Jewish. Eventually, Marta’s father was arrested and deported to Auschwitz. Mrs. Blatak then risked discovery by helping Marta and her mother hide in a succession of places.

In 1945, the Soviet army liberated Marta and her mother. They returned home and were eventually joined by Lydia, then 15, who had survived both slave labor and a death march. Later they learned that Marek, as well as most of their relatives, had been murdered in Auschwitz.

AliyahtoIsraelIn 1949, Marta, her first

cousin and some friends received permission from the Czechoslovakian communist authorities to make aliyah or immigrate to Israel. At 15 years old, Marta left her mother behind.

“I was eager to help build the Jewish homeland,” recalls Marta, who was settled in Kfar Masaryk, a kibbutz north of Haifa. “I worked and I studied. I also had to learn, Hebrew, which is my fourth language. I was young and idealistic and happy to be part of building Israel.”

Conditions in 1949 were harsh in Israel. There wasn’t enough food and there were no eggs, meat or chicken. They lived on olives, citrus fruits, bananas and seasonal fruits.

“For breakfast, our main course was nine olives,” she says. “We were told that was the nutritional equivalent of one egg.”

When Marta turned 18 in 1951, she joined the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). Four months of rigorous physical and basic training taught her martial arts and how to shoot a gun. She joined the Nachal brigade. For more than two years she helped to settle new kibbutzim in border

areas. Her service in the IDF took Marta near three different borders—Jordan, Syria and Lebanon.

“My job as a soldier encompassed many different tasks, including being a border guard and a sheepherder,” she says. “I look fondly upon my days as a sheepherder. I was able to read a lot while the sheep were grazing!”

Marta’s life story has many chapters, but she says her formative years as a Holocaust survivor and a soldier in the IDF are part of the story of Israel—a phoenix born out of ashes.

Heritage Pointe was conceived over 30 years ago to help create a beautiful and loving home for the Jewish aging in Orange County.

Over the years, volunteers founded fundraising groups with over 1,600 members throughout southern California. These “chapters” held monthly get-togethers, game nights, networking events and supper clubs. Participants came

together not only to support Heritage Pointe, but to foster relationships with each other and with Residents that have clearly lasted for decades. Members are still meeting—on Zoom!—staying in touch despite social distancing guidelines.

A new centralized group, called Family of Friends, is available for you and your family! You will share in the history of support and friendship that made Heritage Pointe possible.
