We shall rememberThe inaugural Anzac Day dawn service on the reserve above Sunkist Bay, Beachlands.

Some of the hundreds who turned out to the Cle-vedon parade and service.

The Pohutukawa Coast centenary Anzac commemorations began silently in the pre-dawn as between 400-500 people converged on Sunkist Bay Reserve for the inaugural Beachlands dawn service last Saturday.

Some drove but most walked to the site of the proposed war memorial gar-dens above the bay near the Log Cabin.

The crowd stood quietly and rever-ently in the dark waiting for the service to begin. The field of small plain white hand made crosses, planted beneath the towering Norfolk pine, each adorned with a red poppy, glowed ghostly in the spotlights, guarded at each corner by Air Training Corps cadets.

In a fitting tribute, a shooting star shot across the dawn sky as those gathered sang the hymn Onward Christian soldiers.

Organiser John Harris was over-whelmed by the turnout.

“We only printed song sheets for 50, that was about the most we thought would come...it was amazing,” says John.

In the true spirit of Anzac it didn’t matter that it was the Australian flag that was flying and not the New Zea-land.

“We took the flag out of its bag which said ‘New Zealand’ and put it up in the dark, so we didn’t notice until it was too late,” explains John, who gave a

Those attending then walked down to the Memorial gates to hear the names of the Fallen inscribed on the gate plaques read out loud. Those gathered also called out the names of family loved ones who had died.

A high turnout at the dawn services didn’t detract from the numbers taking part in the traditional Beachlands and Clevedon mid-morning civic Anzac parades and services. This year’s theme focused on youth and the Beach-lands parade was led by three local youngsters Liam Smith, Olivia Lee and Emma Brett carrying the New Zealand, Australian and, for the first time, the Turkish flag.

Wow! What an extraordinary Anzac Day last Saturday, one that will probably live in all our memories for a long time to come.

Fran and I headed off in the pre-dawn darkness not knowing quite what to expect – she to the Beachlands dawn service, me to the one at Whitford.

The last time I went to the Whitford dawn service was 2013. There were, from memory, seven of us. Last Sat-urday I turned the corner into Trig Rd to be confronted by a waiting crowd of probably 200. It was the same for Fran who, on reaching the end of our road, was surprised to find more than 400 people had silently made their way in the dark to the Sunkist Bay reserve for the dawn ser-vice. Organisers had expected maybe 50 and soon ran out of service sheets.

It was the same for the rest of the day. We wondered whether the large turnout at the Beachlands dawn ser-vice might detract from the usual parade and service lat-er in the morning. But, no, just as many people as usual

turned up for the parade from the chartered club to the school – probably more.

At Clevedon I struggled to get an accurate count, but there must have been nearly twice the usual number gathered around the monument, perhaps as many as 500.

Even far-flung Orere attracted around 150 to its mid afternoon service. (Bagpiper Stuart Lane must have an extraordinary set of lungs as he piped his way through both the Clevedon and Orere services!).

The remarkable feature of all five of these events was that there were all the same, yet all different. Each fol-lowed a familiar Anzac Day format, but all had their own local flavour.

Anzac Day allows our small communities to connect with their past, commemorate their fallen, but also cel-ebrate what makes each unique and special to this day.

Many of us on the Coast drive past the memorial gates at Whitford every day but how many of us even know they are there? On Saturday we assembled by the gates with their memorial plaques and heard the names of the Fallen recited out loud. There were many familiar Whit-ford family names – families who still live in Whitford to this day.

It’s exactly the same at Clevedon where names on the monument have strong links to the families of today.

A feature both of our local services, and those right across the country, was the involvement of children, many wearing the medals of great and great-great grandparents.

One aspect was the Field of Remembrance Trust’s joint venture with the Ministry of Education which saw 80,000 white crosses supplied to 2531 primary and sec-ondary schools across the country.

Schools all took varying approaches to how the crosses were used. For example Beachlands School had a full-on Anzac Service of its own earlier in the week carried out by the children. Clevedon School children marched car-rying their crosses in the parade while Orere School had set up a literal field of crosses in conjunction with the service at the adjacent community hall.

But perhaps the biggest contributing factor to the huge interest in the 100th anniversary of Gallipoli was the saturation coverage in the media prior to the event. I doubt there would be a single person anywhere in New Zealand still ignorant of what happened that day, April 25 1915, and in the months afterwards.

We are a warrior nation. We understand the need to defend freedom, to protect the innocent and to stand against tyranny. But Gallipoli reminds us that this is a responsibility that should not be taken lightly.

Anzac Day brings our communities together

many to tears.At Clevedon hundreds

gathered at the monu-ment for the traditional commemoration ser-vice which included the reading of the Gover-nor General’s message by Hunua MP Andrew Bayly. The names of the Fallen inscribed on the monument were read out loud, and wreaths laid.

Clevedon School chil-dren carried Fields of

Remembrance crosses which were planted in the memorial garden.

The road was partially closed as war veterans, led by a piper, led the parade to the Clevedon

Hall where a service was held. At Orere there was an afternoon service out-side the memorial hall that included children from the adjacent Orere School who had made a

Field of Remembrance with their crosses and poppies in the school grounds.

After various speech-es – interrupted brief-ly when they were

Big turnouts at local Anzac services

On average around 10,000 cars travel along the Whitford-Maraetai Road every day, passing through the temporary road works in both directions. Road works do alter the usual condition of the road. Consequently, from the start of our activities, Trans-field Services has had the necessary traffic management controls in place as a protective measure against vehicle damage, not as a guarantee.

We assesses insurance claims based on evidence that a vehicle has been damaged as a direct result of a failure of our traffic man-agement or site controls.

Over the course of the road construction to date, around quarter of a million cars have driven through the road worksite.

At each stage we have taken all reasonable steps to alleviate in-convenience to motorists – working on each side of the road sepa-

rately to ensure that by the time we open the lane up to traffic, the laid materials have been compacted to a condition as smooth as is practicable for a metal road at each stage of construction.

This temporary levelling of the roads and the restriction of work activities outside of commuting hours has extended the length of time of the road construction on the Whitford-Maraetai Road.

While the completion timeframes are weather dependent, we anticipate road works will be complete by the end of May.

Once again, we thank motorists and local residents for their continued patience and co-operation.

SAFE Self Defence is running a free women’s weekend workshop at the Te Puru Community Centre.

The workshop’s in-structor, Charlie Riley, believes all women should have the oppor-tunity to know how to protect themselves and their loved ones.

“The majority of peo-

ple think of self defence as a karate style punch to the face or some fan-cy flying spinning kick to the head, but self defence actually means doing everything you possibly can to avoid fighting someone who threatens or attacks you,” says Charlie.

He says a good self defence course can

teach proven, effective, simple techniques that are easy to learn.

The workshop is open to those aged 12 years old and older. Partici-pants do not have to be super fit to take part or have any martial arts experience. All that’s needed is a positive at-titude.

“We try to give you

something that you can use straight away, in real life situations.” says Charlie

The workshop will be run on Saturday May 16 and Sunday May 17 with a possible follow-up workshop in November. Register through: www.selfde-fencecourses.co.nz

‘RECOGNISED FOR EXCELLENCE IN REAL ESTATE”

By Teri DoranScores of hardy locals

took to the rough waters on Sunday to take part in Beachlands Boat Club’s 28th annual raft race.

The popular event saw 11 teams paddling for glory at Sunkist Bay on homemade rafts as they competed for first place in their respective races.

It was a challenging circuit, with winds gust-ing up to 20 knots.

This year the competi-tion has new champions in the men’s category, with the Metal Wakas knocking the Outlaws off top spot.

The men’s race has previously been domi-nated by the Outlaws, who have held the tro-phy for the last five years.

This year the band of oarsmen made a splash yet again, this time for the wrong reasons.

All nine crew mem-bers fell overboard mid-race. Most of the team managed to get back on the raft and carried on to finish in sixth place. The rescue patrol boat returned the other two members to dry land.

The Metal Wakas, who finished last the previ-ous year, mastered the waves this time round to cruise into first.

The Deck Heads, de-spite taking an early lead, had to settle for second, with the Jay Jays nipping into third.

Metal Waka skipper, Anthony Bell, says it was challenging but en-joyable.

“It was rough out there; it was fun though.

“Winning was a great feeling.”

Miscommunication led to controversy in the women’s two-raft race after the route was shortened due to the adverse weather condi-tions.

Last years’ winners Vicious and Delicious victory celebrations were short lived when organisers declared a draw after the Metal Wahines claimed they never received the in-struction the course had been altered and com-pleted the full circuit.

WHAT’S ON

Maraetai Tennis Club has enjoyed a great season of tennis with plenty of action on and off the court.

The club now boasts a membership of around 170 players and the recent influx of members enjoying the game in the community has resulted in an in-crease in the number of interclub teams represent-ing the club in the Tennis Auckland competition.

Prior to the start of the season, Maraetai Tennis Club helped fund the resurfacing of its front two courts in a synthetic turf to match the rear courts which were laid two years ago.

This offers all-weather playing opportunities. The season culminated in the annual club champs

which saw some real talent emerge in the age-groups categories.

The tournament provides a great opportunity for players of all abilities to get out on the court and test their skills against fellow club members and forms an integral part of the tennis learning process.

The 2015 champions are:Beginner Boys, Oscar Boehme; Boys U10 yrs,

Caleb Therond; Boys U12 yrs, Lachlan Tate; Boys U14 yrs, Max Brooker; Boys U16 yrs, Kaiden Lightfoot.

Beginner Girls, Finley Dougherty; Girls U12 yrs, Emily O’Brien; Girls U16 yrs, Joyce O’Brien

Mens Singles, Keith Thompson; Mens Doubles, Spencer Cross & Greg Tate.

Ladies Singles, Anke Raich Ladies Doubles, Anke Raich & Sue Wheeler; Mixed Doubles, Anke Raich & Anthony Schomaker.

The AGM and prizegiving will be held at the club-rooms on Sunday May 17 at 2pm. Everyone is wel-come to help celebrate the season and recognise the achievements of the club champions for the 2014-2015 season.

Anzac Day came a few days early for Beach-lands School and most other schools across the country.

The whole of Beach-lands School assembled on the playing field out-side the school’s hall to conduct its own Anzac service as part of the nationwide Field of Re-membrance project.

So that young New Zealanders have the opportunity to hon-our, value and learn about the service and sacrifice of so many New Zealanders dur-ing World War I, the Fields of Remembrance Trust and the Ministry of Education partnered with schools to set up their own Fields of Re-membrance in time for Anzac Day 2015.

During March, each was given 30 white crosses to commemo-rate the men and wom-en who died for New Zealand. Each cross was named to include local men, nurses, New Zealand Victoria Cross recipients, the young-est New Zealander who died (aged 17), an All Black captain, and one

with the words “Known Unto God” to represent the unknown soldier.

Each school was al-located the names of 22 soldiers and one nurse from their wider re-gion. The names were randomly selected from the list of 18,200 who lost their lives in World War I.

Beachlands School’s ceremony was organ-ised by eight of its inter-mediate students: Ryan Potgieter, Lily Moore, Charlotte Aitken, Jess Brown, Matthew Lee, Ben Parnell, George Partridge and Ronin

Cleveland.Associate Principal

Barbara Dinnissen said the eight students spent about a month organis-ing the ceremony.

The whole school was involved and came up with a ceremony based on an Anzac service. But it was made up of what the children want-ed, said Barbara

The crosses came in kitset form from the Ministry and had to be made up by the chil-dren, who researched every one of the names on the crosses..

The ceremony, held on

the first day of the new school term, included a flag raising, national anthem, the recital of the poem In Flanders Fields, the singing of Long Way to Tipper-ary (recycled from the

recent grandparents day!), recital of the Roll of Honour, cross place-ment for an unknown soldier, the Last Post, and The Ode read in Te Reo and in English.

Sharysse Caudwell (left) and Lily Moore read The Ode in Maori and English.

Early Anzac Day for Beachlands School

Beachlands-Maraetai Social Club met in the Beachlands Hall on April 7 with a low turnout of 16 members attending.

We would love to see more members coming along. New members are also welcome.

Our entertainer was John Woods who gave us an enjoyable rendition of well known songs.

The raffles were won by Cushla Walton and Fay Williams.

Next month will be the annual general meeting on May 5. All members and new members are encour-aged to come along.

POHUTUKAWA COAST TIMES (May 1st 2015) 7

Native bush sweeps towards the horizon, a canopy of ferns lines the driveway, mature trees create places of shade and seclusion, a tui chortles from a branch outside the window...no, we’re not in the Waitakere Ranges, we’re actually in Maraetai.

FEATURE PROPERTY: May 1, 2015

Maraetai - For Sale: Tender

But it is a part of Maraetai set in its own little world at the top of the steep right of way at the end of Rewa Rd. The elevation gives this property sweeping 270 degree views that not only take in the Adah Platts-Mills bush directly in front, but also the sea, the islands, the distant Coromandels, rolling farmland and the edge of the Maraetai forest.

If you can drag yourself away from the view, the house is also something special – a labour of love built by its current owners 17 years ago, oozing individuality and charm with a cedar exterior that blends perfectly with the natural environment.

There is a downstairs entrance but you are instinctively drawn to the exterior staircase that takes you straight up to the top storey and a huge wooden deck with its commanding view. From here you can enter directly into the open plan dining and kitchen area. A feature of the dining room is a picture window that frames the bush setting outside. The kitchen is big with plenty of cupboard and bench space and good flow to and from the dining room.

Adjacent is a more formal living area featuring a double sided wood fire facing into the living room and on the other side to the dining room. The dining room enters into a hallway which takes you to a large office and library.

There’s also a big laundry with a separate toilet for those busy in the garden. Outside access leads to the secluded rear of the property with its mature trees, fruit trees, raised bark gardens and more decks, including a raised deck area shaded by a large tree – perfect for long leisurely summer evenings.

Back inside and the hallway takes a right turn and continues with access to a bathroom featuring a mosaic lined bath slap in the centre of the room.

Next come two large double bedrooms as the hallway turns the corner again to complete a circuit back to an outside entranceway adjacent to the living area. Near the entranceway is the master bedroom with walk in wardrobe on one side and ensuite on the other. The bedroom has its own access to the deck outside.

The hall also provides access to a flight of stairs down to the bottom storey and a hallway that leads to another bedroom/office/gymnasium and internal access to a two car garage. Outside there is plenty of storage and the potential to further develop and add new spaces.

On a big 1500sqm sloping section, this is a unique property that defies attempts to slot it into a neat category. What is certain is that it is a nature-lover’s idea of heaven.

Clevedon School chil-dren joined with their community on Anzac Day at the monument to remember those fallen during World War One.

Wreaths were laid on the monument during the service by clubs and groups showing their respects.

A Clevedon nurse from World War I is among the eight larg-er-than-life fibreglass statues that make up Te Papa Museum’s Gal-lipoli: The Scale of our War exhibit.

Charlotte (“Lottie”) Le Gallais was the daughter of Horatio and Eliza Maria (nee Wal-lis) Le Gallais.

The Wallis family re-sided in Wairoa South, now Clevedon. Hora-tio Le Gallais was the headmaster of Cleve-don School, marrying into the Wallis family.

All three Le Gallais children served in World War I, Leddra

being killed at Gal-lipoli.

Although Leddra’s name is not recorded on the Clevedon Monu-ment he was Clevedon born.

Lottie joined the New Zealand Army Nursing Service Corps and was one of 14 nursing sis-ters who were selected for the first voyage of Hospital Ship No. 1 (the ‘Maheno’), which left Wellington July 10 1915, bound for Gal-lipoli.

On her return to New Zealand, Lottie mar-ried her fiancé, Charles Gardner, with whom she had two children.

Lottie died in 1956.Her experiences in-

cluded caring for the wounded and coping with the death of her brother Leddie, who was killed in action.

One of Lottie’s family descendants is Cleve-don & Districts His-torical researcher Jan Sanders, a Ness Valley resident.

“Certainly, I will be heading down to Te Papa sometime in the future,” says Jan.

“When I saw the first couple of figures I idly wondered whether Lot-tie would be mentioned in a document or leaflet and was quite emotion-al when I saw the tab-leau with Lottie holding the letter containing the sad news re her brother Leddie.

morial rose garden next to the monument. The children will continue to plant the crosses each year as part of the com-munity ceremony.

The children and their crosses were part of the Fields of Remem-brance project involv-ing schools across New Zealand

Each school received a pack of 30 crosses, a se-lection of name labels,

poppy and fern stick-ers to go on the crosses, instructions for setting up a field, and hold-ing a commemoration ceremony. They were provided by the Fields of Remembrance Trust in partnership with the Ministry of Education.

Clevedon School has also created an Anzac remembrance display on the school field. It is a timeline of events that happened throughout the war.

The children in Years 6, 7 and 8 have created

‘Auras’ which are simi-lar to QR codes. If you scan this code with your smart device, slides come up on your phone or ipad showing the children talking about what happened during this event.

Hunua MP Andrew Bayly talks with Clevedon School children carrying their remembrance crosses at the Clevedon Anzac memorial commemoration service.
