Poetry Presentation 2013Selected poem and an original composition{Written by Pablo NerudaThe Fable of the Mermaid and the Drunks

{All those men were there insidewhen she came in totally nakedThey had been drinking; they began to spit at her.Newly come from the river, she knew nothing. She was a mermaid who had lost her way.The insults flowed down her gleaming flesh.Obscenities drowned her golden breasts. Not knowing tears, she did not weep tears. Not knowing clothes, she did not have clothes. They blackened her with burnt corks and cigarette stubs, and rolled around laughing on the tavern floor. She did not speak because she had no speech. Her eyes were the colour of distant love, her twin arms were made of white topaz. Her lips moved, silent, in a coral light, and suddenly she went out by that door.Entering the river she was cleaned, shining like a white stone in the rain, and without looking back she swam againswam towards emptiness, swam towards death.

Written by Marcella KukulkaIrrevocably In love{Im frightened. Frightened as though summer, will bring this to an end.Bring this enchantment, slowly to a close.Im frightened. For when the dog days arrive,When the turf is flourishing,When the brightest star blazes,When the flowers fill the air with ambrosial scents,The world will seem pleasurable. But my thoughts will indulge with; The misty blue of stormy seas,Melancholy clouds, that deluge daylight in sorrowful tears,Resplendent which is unavailable for perennial to bloom, where frigid ice, encompasses the soul and benumbs affection. All because, My heart will be, Missing you.Im frightened. Questioning whether I will still recognize your deep, monotonous voice, whether I will be able to distinguish you,The musician, The poet, The dreamer.after alma mater unifies us together once more. Pondering the fascinating essence of life, and whether our fidelity will continue to exist. Will you be comparable, or at varianceWith the young passionate, brown-haired boy I once knew. And yes,I am frightened. All because, My heart will be, Yearning. Longing.and Craving Irrevocably, for you.Neruda, Pablo. "Fable of the Mermaid and the Drunks by Pablo Neruda." Allpoetry.com.
