Rhythm  •  the  beat  of  a  poem.    •  Rhythm  is  set  by  the  “stresses”  or  “accents”  in

Images • Put  us  in  a  picture  • Enables  us  to  imagine  things  according  to  our  senses.    

   What  Christmas  Feels  Like    The  tree’s  aglow  with  colors  of  red,  green,  blue,  and  orange,    The  heat’s  toasty  arms  warmly  embrace  us.    Presents  under  the  Christmas  tree      Beg  to  be  released  from  their  bright,  sparkling  coats.    Santa  Claus  cookies  washed  down  with  boiling,  hot  chocolate;    Shouts  of  glee  and  appreciation;    Hearts  overflowing  with  love;    This  is  what  Christmas  feels  like.

Major Authors in Children’s Poetry •   Her  poems  are  often  about  an  individual’s  

personal  life.  •  She  has  written  many  poems  on  family,  

relationships,  love,  hope,  and  confidence.  •  Some  of  her  works  have  been  granted  the  

ALA  notable  books  award  as  well  as  the  Coretta  Scott  King  Award.  

•  She  is  a  poet  of  children  and  adult  works.  •  Some  of  her  works  include:  It’s  Raining  

Laughter,  A  Dime  a  Dozen,  and  Sister  Love.

Janet Wong • She  is  a  Californian  with  Chinese  and  Korean  ancestry  • Most  of  her  writing  focuses  on  the  point  of  views  from  children  of  minorities  • She  won  the  International  Reading  Association’s  “celebrate  literacy”  Award  • Some  of  her  works  include:  The  Dumpster  Diver,  The  Rainbow  Hand,  A  Suitcase  of  Seaweed,  and  Good  Luck  Gold.    

•  His  poems  are  known  for  being  very  funny,  lively,  and  ironic.  

•  His  works  tend  to  focus  on  the  joyous  moments,  the  challenges,  and  the  hardships  of  childhood.  

•  Some  of  his  works  include:  The  New  Kid  on  the  Block,  No  Girls  Allowed,  A  Pizza  the  Size  of  the  Sun,  My  Dog  May  Be  a  Genius,  and  many  more.

Children’s Preferences in Poetry • Children  enjoy  poetry  that  consists  of  animals,  relatable  experiences,  and  lots  of  humor.  Preferred  poems  also  must  contain  rhythm,  rhyme,  and  sound.  Poems  that  are  in  narrative  form  seem  to  be  liked  by  various  age  groups.    

 • The  two  types  of  poetry  that  are  most  disliked  by  students  are  free  verse  and  haiku.  (Do  you  believe  this  to  be  true  and  why?)    

 • Sadly,  poetry  becomes  less  interesting  to  many  children  as  they  reach  middle  school  and  high  school.  (Any  ideas  why  this  may  happen?)    

What are some ways we can teach our children to appreciate poetry?

• Share  poetry  informally  whenever  you  have  the  opportunity    • Have  children  act  out  or  create  a  musical  of  various  poems    • Regularly  encourage  children  to  write  their  own  poetry
