(LOTE Standard 2 and 1), in order to identify subtleties of meaning through the use of learned vocabulary and structures including present, past, and future tense (LOTE Standard 1).Introduce the Learning Activity:

1. Describe how you will communicate the lesson objective to the students. How will you tell them what they will learn in this lesson?

The lesson objectives will be the first thing mentioned at the start of class. The objectives for this lesson are to examine song lyrics to compare and contrast the use of figurative and literal language in Spanish and to use Microsoft Word to organize info.

2. Describe how you will provide a motivator. How will you get students interested in this lesson?

I will pose questions that lead into the lesson: Have you ever liked a song, but were oblivious to what the lyrics were really saying? If yes, what was your reaction after you realized what the lyrics meant?

I will further explain, “the message of a song is a microscope into the culture that surrounds it.” I will play a short clip of the song “al final de este viaje en la vida” and ask students what they think the song is about, and whether or not it catches their attention.http :// www . youtube . com / watch ? v = Vbnoq 4 DPwoc I will then reveal the song describes death. Provide Information:

1. Describe how you will provide any definitions, explanations, descriptions, procedures, examples, and/or samples needed for this lesson.

Students will be told we will be using Word to help us visually organize our work. What they do next will be verbally instructed and demonstrated by me. Students will be instructed to go to my website: http :// personal . plattsburgh . edu / ncuzc 001/ They will click on the link to the song lyrics to view it in a new window. They will copy and paste the song lyrics into the Word document. The lyrics will be highlighted and then students will be instructed to go to “insert,” “table,” then “convert text to table.” When students get to the box that pops up, they will click the “separate at tab” option and then choose 2 columns. I will stop after each instruction and ask if everyone is following. In the second column students will put a translation of the text. I will tell them, after

they can visually see the translation, they need to be able to determine whether the lyric is figurative or literal. If it is figurative, students must be able to provide the literary terminology that goes with it : metaphor, simile, personification or hyperbole. Students should already be familiar with this. Students will color code each type of figurative speech (highlighted with bright colors):

comparación (simíl), metáfora, personificación, hyperboléProvide Practice:

a. Describe how you will give students an opportunity to practice the exact task stated in the objective.

I will erase what I had just done in the Word window and ask the class to follow me as I demonstrate for the second time how to use Word in order to visually organize their information.

I will ask students to translate the second stanza of the song “Al final de este viaje en la vida” by Silvio Rodriguez. After the translation of every line, I will ask students to ask themselves if it has literal or figurative meaning. If it is figurative, I would ask what literary tool they were using. They should ask themselves this with every line they translate. They will not highlight or highlight the lyric according to the color code I provided earlier. b. Describe how you will give students an opportunity to practice the exact task stated in the objective individually, as well as in groups. (You may have only individual practice, but not solely group practice.)

Students will then do the third stanza alone. I will walk around to see if anyone needs help. They will be allowed to use an online dictionary : http :// www . merriam - webster . com / spanish / or http :// www . spanishdict . com / We will go over the third stanza.

If I see students get the hang of it, they will be allowed to start researching lyrics for a song of their choice from a list I will provide. They can start the process in class and then complete it for homework. They will be allowed to work on this assignment in the next class, but it must be completed by the end of next class, where they will submit to me the completed assignment.

Provide Knowledge of Results:1. Describe how you will provide verbal feedback to the students on their practice

efforts. As I check up on students while they work, I will provide suggestions to better their

assignment. I will ask them questions guiding them towards the desired outcome.

2. Describe how you will provide written feedback to the students on their practice efforts.

For the lesson, they will get participation credit at the end, when each pair of students will tell the class what they learned that lesson. They will receive a check in the grade book.

Review the Activity:1. Describe how you will, or how you will have students, summarize the important points

in this lesson.Students will summarize important points in the lesson by doing a think, pair, share.

They will discuss with their partner two important things they’ve learned in the lesson, then a few will share with the class. For homework, students will provide me with examples from the text they’ve chosen, a lyric that shows any of the figurative or literal speech options: comparación (simíl), metáfora, personificación, or hyperbolé.Method of Assessment:

1. Describe how you will assess whether or not the students have learned the skills outlined in the learning objective. Provide a sample test, rubric, scoring guide, etc.

Students will submit a graphic organizer chart of their examinations of Spanish song lyrics of their choice. The organizer will consist of two columns. One column will have the song lyrics. Every row should contain a line of the song. The second column will have the literal translation of the line from Spanish to English. It should also show the figurative or literal meaning of the line by the color code I provided in class. Students will have two class periods to work on it. The final draft will be submitted to me.

I will use a scoring guide. I will put a check mark after each lyric translated correctly, and a plus mark after each highlighted or non highlighted line expressing the correct form of figurative or literal speech. For every line incorrectly translated, I will put an X mark next to the line along with the area for the student to revise underlined. If they don’t properly color code the lyric, they will receive a minus mark.

Students will be provided with a rubric, because this assignment is looking for the synthesis of many items.
