four years have passed since launching poc at ispo. We got there with a strong conviction that we had something to share and bring to the skiers out there. time flies, and even though it feels like we started just yesterday, a lot has happened. Beyond the great response we have had from consumers, where poc is now available in thirty countries around the world and grows rapidly, there have been a few mile-stones. When Julia Mancuso won her olympic gold Medal in turin, back in 2006, we were probably the only swedes celebrating. since then we have been lucky to connect with a number of great athletes winning the X-games, setting World records, winning World cups and World champion-ships. guys like Jon olsson, tanner hall, tJ schiller and aurélien ducroz spoil us with their great achievements and are crucial in product development.

What’s also reWarding is the attention we get for innovation and design. thanks to great commitment and teamwork in our workshop, poc has been rewarded with more than 23 international awards. Just recently, the first poc concept store was opened on rue du docteur paccard, in chamonix. if you are in the area, you should visit us. So what’s new on the gear side?the new body armor line called vpd (visco-elastic-polymer-dough), based on a new polymer formula that sets a new standard in back and body protection. the properties are amazing with perfect fit and ergonomics.

on the helmet side there is the new super ventilated frontal helmet. the helmet combines three different ventilation systems; an adjustable generous ventilation at the top, poc´s patented vdsap (ventilated double shell anti penetration) around the front and open chimney vents at the back. to reduce weight, at the same time maximizing ventilation, the helmet is a hybrid between an inmold and a hard shell helmet. the helmet has been developed in close collaboration with Jon olsson.

there’s also the neW generation of goggles; the patent pending cornea, based on the concept originally developed for our successful lobes goggles. More than that there is a lot of new stuff. We’ve never been close to launching this many new products before.

poc Works in a cross-scientific Way from the office in saltsjöbaden outside of stockholm. the organization involves competences from different fields, such as engineers, material specialists, industrial and graphic designers, neurologists and specialists in spinal cord injuries. stockholm is an important center for some of europe’s leading research and development experts in the areas of safety, medicine, health care, advanced product development and testing.

all our products have Been tested by top gravity sport athletes and then further refined to perfection. they love to go flat out, however, without risking cuts, bruises, headaches or more serious injuries such as back- and brain damage. the end result is a line of lightweight, high performance gear that offers the ultimate protection against injury, thanks to superior impact absorption and penetration resistance.

When developing a product at poc, we do it in the spirit of doing the best. When it comes to safety, quality and performance, we never compromise when choosing a construction or material. even if it would mean cheaper products or increased margins.

poc laB is our scientific foruM. it brings together experts who provide us with invaluable assistance in ensuring that we develop the most relevant, reliable and advanced protective products on the market today.

poc laB provides a close and rewarding collaboration with some of the world’s foremost sports medicine experts, specialist in spinal cord injuries and brain scientists. as a complement to the poc lab, we also seek help from materials technologists – and from people such as you, who make avid use of our protective gear in practice, ranging from proficient X-game riders to the orld cup level.

one of the MaJor issues that concern the members of the poc lab is the rapid evolution of skiing. the speeds are increasing, drops and jumps are higher and parks have jumps, banks and grinders that are available to most people. downhill racing, skier X or moguls are also disciplines where the limits are being tested. the whole scenario is actually a bit frightening. at this pace, we are likely to experience an increased number of serious accidents in the coming years. therefore, it is important to underline that protection can’t guarantee your safety. What it can do, is reduce the risk of being injured. the most vital ingredient in avoiding injuries is you. skill and good common sense are the assets that need to be prioritized.

POC’s ‘semi-hard shell’ 2.0 helmets

these helMets have evolved from poc’s original design concept the “semi hard shell” helmets. When first developed and launched season 2005/2006, the aim of the “semi hard shell” helmets was to combine the advantages of both in-mold and hard shell helmets. the excellent energy absorption properties from the in-mold helmets was achieved by using a thin and light outer shell and the ability to withstand sharp object penetration was solved by adding a barrier made from ballistic aramid. poc has been refining the concept over a couple of seasons and is now presenting the second generation of these helmets, the “semi hard shell 2.0” collection. By studying today’s top race skiers, it was found that a helmet used for ski racing is likely to be exposed for repeated violence from hitting gates at high speed. the updated helmets are therefore equipped with a liner of expanded polypropylene (epp) instead of eps. the difference between the materials is that epp, unlike eps, does not deform perman-ently on impact and is therefore suitable to absorb repetitive shocks. the outer shell is also updated for increased durability and optimized for the new liner material.

POC’s unique in-mold helmets

starting froM the aMazing properties of our skull comp helmet, we have taken the technology further by incorporating its aramid ballistic penetration barrier apB, into a series of in-mold helmets – synapsis. this has enabled us to overcome the traditional problems of in-mold helmets breaking easily and not being able to withstand penetration. the synapsis helmets are are designed to offer extreme

light-weight, ventilation and comfort without compromising safety. the helmets have soft foam pads for a perfect individual fit and detachable ear pads (all synapsis helmets).

POC’s double shell helmets

iMproving properties such as better shock absorption, lower weight and penetration resistance are some of the major advantages solved by using poc’s patent pending, aramid ballistic penetration barrier: apB. transferring those qualities and lessons learned into a fully ventilated system has led to a new revolutionary, patent pending; ventilated-double-shell-anti-penetration: vdsap. this concept Was initially developed for the receptor + all season helmet. a helmet developed and certified in europe and the us for skiing, snowboarding, skateboarding, biking and water sports. vdsap is built with double shells, placed offset, for maximum penetration resistance and channels in between to evacuate heat, moisture, or water. the inner shell is an extremely thin in-mold shell, while the outer shell is a hard shell of aBs and pc. the properties are amazing and used in all receptor helmets and the cortex dh.

POC´s optimized vent helmets

soMe Markets (especially those where winters are milder) have asked us to come up with a super ventilated helmet, still, adjustable for cold days. With the experience gained from previous models, innovations and patents, we have come up with a cocktail of different ventilation concepts, all included in one helmet. When using an adjustable system, there is also the challenge of keeping weight down. the solution combines three

different ventilation systems. at the front,there is the poc patent vdsap, a double shell solution where air is transported between two layers of shell, to avoid direct wind and to withstand penetration from sharp objects. at the back, there are ventilation holes for the helmet to function as a chimney, where air is pulled from the front to the rear.

the helMet has generous ventilation with six vents, which may be closed or semi-closed with a turning-devise. this combination makes the helmet very airy and very light (all frontal helmets).

POC´s Carbon Fiber helmets

so far, carBon fiBer helMets haven’t made too much sense. the methods of industrially laying carbon fiber have been counterproductive to the goal of thin, light shells that deform or destruct at certain stress points. the shells have been too stiff and too thick for ski helmets.

hoWever, thanks to a neW method, we can make a super-thin and super-light carbon fiber shell, which is highly flexible and makes sense to use in a ski helmet. unfortunately the technique is still very expensive but it’s so good that we want to introduce it in a new line of skull helmets; super skull comp.

Current designsup to noW, there have Been tWo types of helMets on the Market. firstly, the traditional helmet with a hard shell and a liner of softer expanded polystyrene (eps) which has good penetration resistance and energy distribution properties. the disadvantage of the hard shell is that upon impact, the hard structure causes a sudden stop. the brain may continue to move in the direction of travel and the impact is not absorbed very well. the hard shell is also quite heavy which may cause the helmet to bounce off the ground on impact. these properties can lead to brain damage and whiplash injuries. the second type of helMet is the ‘in-Mold’ type, Which originated in the field of cycling. these molded helmets have a thinner shell of hard plastic, a that covers the ears and the back of the neck.

norMally, Both the traditional hard shell and in-Mold helMets rely on expanded polystyrene (eps) for the shock absorption. eps absorbs energy by plastic deformation, meaning it is deformed permanently upon impact. therefore, a helmet liner made of eps will not be good at absorbing repetitive shocks.

A free ride helmet with the main focus on ventilation. The solution combines three different ventilation systems in a hybrid of hard shell and in mold helmet. At the front there is the POC patented VDSAP, a double shell solution where air is transported between two layers of shell, to avoid direct wind and to withstand penetration from sharp objects. Our Receptor+ is developed for multidisciplinary activities for those who are tired of storing various helmets around their home. The Receptor+ can be used on snow, bike, skateboard, or in water and has the appropriate certifcations for all three different environments. The Synapsis helmet is developed to be ultra light, without sacrificing protection or safety. It weighs a feathery 375 gr and is certified according the CE-1077 as well as ASTM standards. This has been achieved by using POC´s patent pending ballistic APB, Anti Penetration Barrier. In the injection process, the Aramid is placed between the thin vacuum molded outer shell and the EPS-liner. By succeeding with this complicated process, the helmet withstands penetration despite its low weight. The Skull Super Comp is based on the Skull Concept but with a carbon fiber shell. The carbon shell in this case makes sense. Carbon shells have so far not been a very good solution in ski helmets since they become to stiff and thick which counteracts the performance wanted. Thanks to a new industrial method, it is now possible for us to use a carbon shell, partly using a ductile matrix, making the shell flexy and very light.

About Better body protection

Visco-Elastic Polymer Dough

poc uses a neW coMpound and technology for our most shock-absorbing back protector called vpd (visco-elastic polymer dough). this protector is one of few on the market that reaches the highest standard (level 2 “high performance”) of the ce 1621-2 motorcycle standard.

the Material is highly daMpening, using a modified polyurethane foam that is soft, comfortable and adapts to create an individual fit for every user. however, when exposed to impact the material stiffens and has an extreme absorption of energy. Most of the protector systems available on the market have a relatively static impact absorption curve and are designed to just pass the specific ce-norm test. however, this means that low energy impacts are transferred almost directly to the body. our vpd back protector functions progressively and adapts itself to the force of the impact.

to further iMprove properties the back protector uses a dual density combination, with extra protection covering the spinal area. this way we maximize both the freedom of movement and the shock absorbing characteristic of the protection.

Multi impact hard shell system

to MaXiMize energy aBsorption poc’s back armor with hard panel shields has a layer of multi impact epp. unlike many other back protectors, epp also withstands multi-impact without losing the energy absorbing abilities. the hard shield protector also has a height adjustable waist-band system for the best personal fit.

An individual system

We have a fleXiBle patented back-protection system which allows you to choose your protection degree at all times from various components. this means you can tailor the degree of protection, depending on how you ride for the day or to meet different rules and restrictions applying to the competition you enter. our vpd back protector outperform the en 1621-2 standard level 1 (18kn) reaching the higher level 2 requirements (9kn). still many ce approved protection systems have a relatively static impact absorption curve and are constructed to just pass the specifi c ce-norm test. this means that low energy impacts are transferred almost directly to the body. our vpd back protector does not only exceed the required shock absorbance ce-values, it also releases the energy gradually so the spine will not be exposed to any force peaks.

The Spine Ergo is a lightweight back protector, with shoulder straps and a height adjustable fl exible waistband system for the best individual fi t. The back plates are made of Polypropylene and have an inner shock-absorbing core made of multi impact EPP. Thanks to the Air Induction System that transports moisture and lets fresh air fl ow in, it has great ventilation. Spine Ergo is the alternative if you prefer to use a light weight hard shell protection with multi- impact shock absorbing properties.

About Goggles

snow, ice, rain, headwinds, tree branches etc – and naturally also assisting your vision in different light conditions – we have worked on optimizing the field of view on all our goggles.

R esearch shows that simply increasing the field of view not only allows you to see better in general, but also to perceive details in your peripheral vision. This in turn speeds your reaction time.

All goggles have a cellulose propionate inner lens to optimize anti fog properties, and in double lenses, a polycarbonate outer lens for dura bility and penetration resistance. All lenses are anti-scratch and anti-fog treated.

The patent pended Cornea is based on the POC innovation of attaching the lens on the outside of the frame, to enlarge the field of view. Cornea has extension bars which gives a much better fit to the face. The lens is a perfectly shaped, injected cylindrical PC screen for superb optical qualities. To avoid steaming the inner lens is made of CP and laminated exactly parallel to the outer lens. POC continues the journey to make the “changing lenses panic” a piece of cake.

Goggles with a huge lens to optimize the field of vision. The inspiration comes from Swedish architect Sigurd Lewerentz, who put his windows outside the facades, and from astronaut Neil Armstrong. To minimize optical distortion the Lobes lens is a perfectly shaped spherical surface. The lens is made of polycarbonate, perfectly tapered in thickness and cut to shape using computerized numerical control. Another, thinner, sheet of cellulose propionate is applied to the inside. pocito is a series of products for kids between 4 and 10 years old, all developed to prevent accidents or to decrease the severity of injuries in an accident.

children these days face a vulneraBle situation, often skiing on crowded slopes among over-excited adults running fiercely downhill, many of whom are more or less out-of-control but sadly unaware of it. Statistics show that one of the fastest-rising types of accidents on the slopes comes from kids being run into by adult skiers. if a child weighing perhaps 20% that of an adult is hit at high speed, they need an out- standingly good helmet, together with a back protector, to protect the most vital parts of their bodies.

in other wordS, child SkierS need effective, customized protection, and they also need to be seen. our ambition is clear, to make no compromises on kids’ protection, but to design products that are at least as good as the adult gear, while trying to understand the specific needs of children’s safety.

But is there any chance of preventing these accidents?

yes, in many cases we believe there is. Beyond issuing information to skiers in general, we have developed products to alert surrounding skiers to slow down or pay attention and have chosen the most effective colors and properties for these.

avalanches are another risk. these days ski patrollers are forced to dig out even the smallest avalanches across ski runs because of the risk of a child being hidden beneath the snow. all of our kids’ helmets are therefore equipped with an avalanche reflector from recco. all products also have visual reflectors to make children clearly visible in areas around skiing, for example in car parks or near traffic.

While We Were developing these products, people told us that it is impossible to market kids’ gear that provides the quality and protection that we are seeking. at poc, we believe it’s exactly the opposite. Most parents would never compromise their children’s well-being or safety and buy something because it’s cheap, if it is not good enough. and most of the kids’ protection on the market today is less safe and performs less well than what is possible with modern technology. poc is therefore proud to present pocito©, a new range of products for kids that complies with our mission of reducing the consequences of skiing accidents and possibly saving lives.

POCito POCito Skull helmet derives from our Skull racing helmets, but with modified properties. An adult racing helmet is designed to provide accident protection at very high speeds, far above the speeds that children can achieve. The children’s helmet therefore uses a softer lining, which provides much better shock absorption at lower speeds and force. The helmet also has adjustable sizing, which allows the child to grow with the helmet. At the back of the goggle clip there is a panel for writing down a parent’s contact information and emergency medical information. Mounted beneath the shell, there is a Recco® avalanche rescue reflector. For maximum visibility in daylight and twilight, the helmet is fluorescent orange or pink and has reflective stickers. pocito palm Mittens

The POCito Palm mittens are truly a pair of high end gloves for the kids. We use an advanced technical textile to prevent soaking. They also have a retaining strap worn around the wrist, so as to not lose them.

The POCito vest is identical to the adult VPD vest. VPD (visco-elastic-polymer-dough) has amazing energy- absorbing properties. The material is extremely agile and soft but as energy or force is applied, the material stiffens and becomes rock hard. The back protector is inserted in a washable vest and easily removable.

Carbon shells have so far not been a very good solution in ski helmets since they become to stiff and thick which counteracts the performance wanted.
