At POC we have always considered the road bike scene

as a natural step in our evolution but for a number of

years, and due to a lack of capacity, we deliberately held

back on introducing products, which we believe would

be beneficial to road cyclists. With the strong passion

that runs through the POC team, and our clear mission,

we felt that we now had to contribute our approach and

technologies.

Besides developing high performance helmets, the

intention has been to contribute new ideas, innovations

and solutions for improved safety, protection and

performance. These have been built on understanding

the behavior within defined environments, interaction

with other people, vehicles and landscapes. We

have challenged ourselves to come up with new and

more specific products and concepts with the goal of

supporting a safer ride.

To best manage this challenge we have engaged

experts from other fields to apply a cross scientific

approach and investigate areas such as: perception;

visibility; color; contrast; communication; psychology;

digital technology; aerodynamics and more. We have

combined all this with our own experience and history

of developing award winning protection and concepts.

The idea has been to cover a palette of safety areas,

from proactive aspects via communication to protection

and post safety solutions, without ever compromising

on performance.

We are proud to share our most ambitious initiative to

date, promoting safety for road cyclists; AVIP.

POC is a Swedish company working from a strong

mission to do the best we can to possibly save lives

and to reduce the consequences of accidents for

gravity sports athletes and cyclists. Currently skiers,

snowboarders and MTB cyclists around the world

use POC helmets and armor, with some winning the

Olympics, World Championships and X Games, while

others may just want the right protection to go downhill

biking at their favorite location.

It is great to witness the growth in road cycling, but

this growth also brings to light the risks and safety issues

involved in sharing roads with motorists, other cyclists and

pedestrians.

We have always considered being part of road cycling

as a natural evolution as we wanted to take our innovative

and award winning technology into the road bike scene.

For capacity reasons we have deliberately held back for

a number of years, but observing a number of trends

and issues, combined with our mission, we felt the

responsibility to act.

Some of the trends that worried us include; how

infrastructure is developed for cars, the lack of interaction

between road users, respect and understanding among

road users and the constant hazard of being run into by

a car. Further, half of all casualties on rural roads, and

92% of reported cyclists killed or seriously injured, occur

in accidents involve other vehicles, most often a car.

This has led us to consider a platform, which is a true

reflection of our mission and brings a new relevance to road

biking. Through our medical and performance forums,

POC Lab and WATTS Lab, we investigated and researched

different areas to better understand the specific hazards

in road cycling and where gains could be made. We

looked deeper into the problem, researching and studying

perception, visibility, color and contrast, communication,

psychology, digital technology, aerodynamics and more.

AVIP is the result of our work and is our first specific

road bike range. It is a vision and concept, which has

been created by collaborating with some of the best

minds in science, health and technology to redefine the

future of road bike safety and performance.

Besides the evident core developed for road bike

helmets, both time trial and road race, which promote new

safety features, aerodynamics and overall performance,

there are a number of new functional, technical,

performance products for road bike cyclists. These

have been developed to support attention and visibility,

including the finest and most uncompromising cycling

clothing, materials, making, accessories and functional

details for efficacy, without sacrificing safety.

Future developments will include a line of digital safety

products designed to increase communication and

alarm, GPS tracking and interaction together with

motorists and pedestrians.

POC wants to change the future of road biking and AVIP

represents the beginning of our vision.

AttentionIs about achieving a simple, but crucial, objective and grabbing others attention to your presence.

Attention uses the best possible tools to ensure a cyclist is recognized clearly, and in milli-seconds, by

others in traffic through addressing the five senses independently or in combination.

VisibilityOptimizing visibility in a number of different situations and scenarios, including season, weather, time

of day, distance, environment and light conditions. Through scientifically understanding how, color,

material, contrast, patterns, motion and light interact it provides an insight to develop the best possible

visibility and recognition on the road.

InteractionIt is about researching the possibilities and opportunities for communication and technological

interaction between a rider, motorists and pedestrians to support proactive safety. Interaction applies

new ideas to what can be done with modern technology to allow a rider to worry less about other road

users and surroundings and focus solely on riding. Interaction also supports communication with the

outside world in post incidents situations where there is a need for rescue or emergency.

Protection The core of POC’s experience, understanding how to develop physical protection focuses on

minimizing the amount of energy being transmitted to the users brain and body. All engineered with

innovative technology and a specific user and activity in mind, ultimately optimizing protection without

compromising performance.

The four core elements that make up AVIP: Attention; Visibility; Interaction and Protection,

are designed and developed to work individually as well as in collaboration.

POC is a Swedish company with a strong missionto do the best we can to possibly save lives and to

reduce the consequences of accidents for gravity sports athletes and cyclists.

POC was founded in 2005 and made its first entry,

addressing the ski racing market, at the ISPO trade

show where it also introduced its mission. POC’s

new ideas and innovative solutions to improve ski

racing safety, by reducing the force transmitted to

the brain and body in case of a crash, gained a

lot of attention.

The concepts, technologies, and materials used

and implemented for the helmets and body armor

were developed in close collaboration with POC

Lab; POC’s scientific forum that consists of some of

the world’s foremost sports medicine experts, brain

scientists and specialists in spinal cord injuries.

At the Turin 2006 Winter Olympics, US alpine

ski racer, Julia Mancuso won the gold medal in

giant slalom and pictures of her wearing a POC

helmet and goggles were published all over

the world. Since then, POC has evolved and

developed protection for different categories and

disciplines including freeskiing, snowboarding

and since 2008 has provided protection for

mountain bike disciplines.

POC refines products with constant feedback and

review from the team athletes that includes both X

Games, Olympic and World Championship medalists.

All together, POC’s team athletes have won more

than 50 medals in international contests such as the

Olympics, World Championships and X Games.

The most important part and reason for success

are proficient and committed employees. Among

the POC staff there is a range of experience

and perspectives, from industrial, fashion and

graphic designers, CAD and polymer engineers to

communicators, marketers and ambassadors - all

with a huge passion for the activities they develop

products for.

POC has developed a strong reputation

for gravity sports protection and is today

established in 25 countries. Throughout

the years, POC has received more than

40 prestigious international safety, design,

innovation and business awards.

To be at the forefront of safety, innovation and

development we established POC Lab. It is our

scientific forum, which brings together experts

from a range of disciplines and medicine. They

support and advise us to ensure that what we

develop is the most reliable and advanced

protection on the market.

POC Lab allows us to collaborate with some

of the world’s foremost sports medicine experts,

brain scientists and specialists in spinal cord

injuries. The members of the POC Lab are

carefully selected for their unique expertise. Each

member shares POC’s mission to do the best

we can to possibly save lives and to reduce the

consequences of accidents.

To complement our scientific experts and to

make sure our products are optimal we also draw

on guidance from material technologists and our

team athletes, including X Games riders, Olympic

cyclists and elite World Cup skiers. Further we

listen closely to what you have to say and as users

of our protective gear we value your feedback and

suggestions, which we hope will allow us to develop

even better products.THE MEMBERS OF POC LAB CLAES hULTINGM.D. Ph.D. Medical Director Karolinska hospital Spinalis Policlinic at Rehab Station Stockholm

POC was established through a collective desire

to make a difference and give everyone the best

possible safety and confidence in their chosen

sports. This idea has been embodied in our

mission and through a cross-scientific approach to

develop reliable and uncompromising protection.

This challenge has required us to explore,

evaluate and find new innovative ways to promote

safety. We often end up in new exciting areas of

special competence depending on the challenge,

allowing us to think outside of the box and

improve safety.

Building on the competence and expertise of

the POC team and through working closely with

our medical and performance forums, POC

Lab and WATTS Lab, we placed significant

time and effort in a numbers of different

fields, such as color, contrast, perception and

anthropology to better understand what we

needed to translate and focus on in order to

improve road bike safety.

ABOUT R & D

Page 9: POC - AVIP Workbook 2014

9

Our vision for AVIP has always been to develop

a road bike range that does not compromise

on safety and performance. To achieve higher

levels of performance, and balance the

expertise we gain from POC lab in safety and

innovation, we needed to set new standards

and established WATTS Lab, a highly

specialized R&D department to translate and

develop our AVIP vision.

The objective for the team in WATTS Lab is

to optimize POC products to allow the cyclist

to go faster using less energy. To achieve this,

tests were conducted to ensure minimal drag,

optimize speed and reduce the energy output

by the rider.

Together with our internal product team,

aerodynamic specialists at Semcon, the use

of external testing facilities and pro cycling

athletes we have created the framework to

test all aspects of aerodynamic performance.

The results have allowed us to refine our AVIP

products; helmets, clothing and accessories to

support enhanced performance.

CONTRAST

One of the most important factors affecting

visibility is contrast. There are basically two

types of contrast, which can be explained by the

prominence of a color compared to its background

and the difference in a color to adjacent colors,

i.e. color intensity and difference. Importantly,

contrast gives the brain visual clues, ultimately

resulting in an earlier and informed decision on

the identity of an object.

This approach led us to the AVIP color palette,

which is a cornerstone of AVIP. All colors are

carefully selected with high visibility and contrast

in mind.

ThE AVIP COLORS

The AVIP color palette has been carefully

developed to provide a combination of colors that

are based on high visibility colors, fluorescence

and contrast that will work in combination or

independently.

FLUORESCENT ORANGE

Fluorescent orange is a strong and intense color

and is one of the most commonly used colors for

high visibility clothing.

OPTIC WhITE

The Optic White color is innovative and part of the

AVIP palette as it is diametrically opposed to many

colors and supports enhanced contrast.

NAVY BLACK

Navy Black is a strong color, which gives

significant contrast within the AVIP color palette.

Visibility is not always simply a question of wearing

more fluorescent clothing, but considering and

understanding the use of color and contrast, the

environment in which it will be used and most

importantly, whether it will improve on how you

will be seen and recognized.

With POC’s cross-scientic approach to develop

reliable and advanced protection, we always

end up in new areas of special competence

depending on the challenge. For AVIP, we gained

valuable knowledge in different fields, such as

color, contrast, perception and anthropology to

better understand what we needed to translate

and focus on in order to improve road bike safety.

here are some interesting perspectives we would

like to share.

FLUORESCENT COLORS

A conventional bright color is able to reflect about

90% of a color present in the visible spectrum.

Fluorescent colors can reflect as much as 200%

to 300% by using a larger amount of the visible

spectrum and by re-radiate some of the absorbed

ultraviolet rays and colors in the lower part of the

visible spectrum and turn it in to wavelengths the

human eye can see. This ultimately results in the

eye perceiving a more intense color.

PERCEPTION AND RECOGNITION DISTANCE

The use of fluorescent colors and high visibility

products is evident and can be seen in varying

situations all over the world. The advantage of

fluorescent clothing is that it increases the distance

when an object is seen. Some studies show that

fluorescent clothing is five and half time more visible

than conventional clothing e.g with fluorescent

clothing a driver will see the object at 670 meters

instead of 120 meters with regular clothing.

however, we felt there is a fundamental difference

between being seen and being recognized. If

motorists at an early stage can identify you as a

cyclist, they can better plan their own maneuvers.

We were conscious of what other road users were

able to detect, specifically the critical elements of

perception and recognition distances;

Perception distance - is the distance from

where an object is first seen. During this time, the

brain processes a lot of information to create a

perceptual hypothesis, based on familiar patterns

and past experiences, but ultimately the object

may not be accurately recognized.

Recognition distance - is the distance where

the brain can perceive what the object actually is.

By using prior knowledge and interpreting visual

clues, such as colors, contrast, motion etc, the

brain will recognize the object.

A common perception is that visibility is equal

to bright and fluorescent colors but we identified

that advantages could be gained by considering

all possibilities to increase perception and

recognition distances to improve rider safety.

To find the right approach we considered the

changing backdrop that makes up a usual ride,

but also different environmental factors such as

weather, light, nature, time of the day.

Analyzing a problem often provides clear

insights into where gains can be made without

having to re-invent the wheel. Contrast is an

example and has long been considered a

fundamental part of visibility.

”For the colors diametrically opposed to each

other, are those that reciprocally evoke each other

in the eye.” (Goethe, Theory of Colours, 1810)

FABRIC S , CONSTRUCTION AND MAKING

By using some of most progressive fabrics

available - and by working closely with some

of the industries most skilled, experienced

and competent makers - we have been able

to develop a range based on layers and

combinations to provide maximum versatility

and avoiding products with a limited and

narrow use.

In addition, applying an innovative approach

to color and contrast, maximizing attention

and visibility, AVIP Essentials has been further

developed to improve road bike safety.

hELMETSWhen we identified the need to bring our unique approach to safety and performance to road

bike helmets, we naturally wanted to use the knowledge and technology we gained in making

award winning and revolutionary ski helmets and transfer that experience to build optimal road

bike helmets.

The concepts, which we initially used for ski and mountain bike helmets, have been further

developed and refined to meet all the demands of today’s road bike users. New approaches to the

strategic use of EPS, ventilation, aerodynamics, visibility and using an innovative fully wrapped

unibody construction, provide improved protection with ultimate aerodynamic performance.

OCTALThe lightweight Octal helmet is engineered to be the next step in road bike helmet safety and offers optimal ventilation, comfort and low weight.

Even though it offers more coverage and increased protection thanks to an optimized and strategically partially thicker EPS liner, the weight is kept very low, sub 200 g. This is achieved thanks to the fully wrapped unibody shell, which functions as a monocoque, that enhances the safety properties and construction integrity of the helmet.

When developing the Octal helmet, POC approached ventilation in an innovative way. Instead of using many small vents, the Octal helmet has fewer, but larger, ventilation slots. This design provides a larger open surface area at the front, and in combination with the specifically designed interior, allows more air to flow through the helmet, optimizing ventilation.

The Octal helmet has an ultralight size adjustment system that will ensure a secure fit. The internal padding is made of a technical fabric, which reduces the temperature of the contact area touching the skin. Since visibility is a key factor to road bike safety, the Octal helmet comes in high visibility colors and with reflective patches.

TEMPORTempor – POC’s time trial helmet. Designed to provide the cutting edge advantage needed in Time Trial bike races with superior aerodynamic performance and safety compared to the best performing helmets on the market.

POC’s new conceptual approach to optimize aerodynamics and speed was to look at the rider as one body mass, rather than isolating the head from the rest of the body.

The result is amazing with superior performance compared to the best time trial helmets on the market, both when it comes to safety and speed.

Safety-wise, the Tempor helmet performs extremely well (the EPS liner has added thickness at exposed areas) and the impact absorption has not at one point been compromised.

The two air intakes in the front reduce air resistance by leading the air through the helmet and past the shoulders instead of halting it at the front. This air flow also provides generous ventilation.

last time you crashed on your bike, you got up

fine. Or you didn’t, but your friend was there

to help you out. What would happen if you

were out alone and were knocked unconscious

and how long would it take before someone

started worrying? and how would they possibly

know where to start looking for you?

iCE stands for in Case of Emergency

and is well known all over the world. iCE

is a proactive effort to provide emergency

personnel with correct medical history

such as blood group, allergies and basic

information like name and emergency

contact, even if the victim is unconscious.

throughout the years, pOC has developed a

strong reputation for gravity sports protection and

have been recognized and awarded as a global

leader in innovation, safety and performance.

the proactive safety approach is a

cornerstone of aVip, and we have put a strong

emphasis to improve the awareness of your

place on the road. Unfortunately, accidents do

happen, and with pOC’s mission to do everything

we can to possibly save lives and reduce the

consequences of accidents, we have looked

at new ways of improving road bike safety.

helmet construction and design is a critical

element in accident safety but our work has

also shown that if we could minimize the time

before the victim recieves help and provide

information needed for correct medical care,

we could limit the consequences of accidents.

this innovative approach lead to the two

components of pOC iCE, promoting the idea

of digital safety with a system composed

of a crash sensor and an identification tag,

helping the rider to get fast and correct care

in case of emergency. We teamed up with

iCEdot to provide the iCEdot Crash sensor

that monitors for major impacts and alerts

your emergency contacts of your gps

coordinates when you need it the most.

SOSSMSCOUNTDOWN

GPSPOSITION

15sec

iCEDOt Crash sEnsOrWhen paired with the iCEdot smart phone app, the crash sensor is able to detect motion, changes in forces and impacts. in the event of critical forces, the device triggers the app to send a message with your gps position to your preset contacts, unless you stop it within a user defined time interval. this will let your family or friends know you might need help.

iCE tagif an accident happens and the victim is knocked unconscious, scanning the tag will allow passers-by or medical personnel to identify the victim and get correct medical information such as blood group or allergies that can be vital for correct care.
