Introduction to the PMP A strategic plan to address sources of phosphorus in

the middle reach of the Bow River between the

Bearspaw and Bassano Dams.

Involved a broad spectrum of governmental and non-

governmental participants.

Voluntary initiative.

Introduction to the PMP Three goals:

define the issue,

establish goals and objectives, and:

recommend strategies and actions to manage

phosphorus in the Bow River.

Final plan endorsed by all participating organizations

in April 2015.

Currently working on implementation.

Municipalities have a significant role.

Stakeholder Advisory Group (SAG) Interested individuals not currently represented on

the PMP IC.

The SAG workshop provides an opportunity for

interested stakeholders to be kept informed and

provide input as the implementation moves forward.

Next SAG workshop is tentatively scheduled for May

2, 2019.

First TaskImplementation Workplan

Determine what work has already been done for

each of the 51 actions

Review each action to see if further effort is

required by the PMP IC

The goal is to move the strategies and actions to

specific “activities”

Activity: Organization X will do task X by date X

Completed review of all actions.

We Have Come a Long Way…

In the 1800s, waste water flowed directly into the Bow

and Elbow rivers. It was common to throw the water out

the door or window.

In 1887, Robert Lamont was appointed Town Scavenger.

He collected “night soil” which was an old term to

describe poop. This was the first effort to remove waste

water.

In 1918, the City of Calgary approved $350,000 to build

the Bonnybrook Plant for waste water from Calgary’s south side.

Page 23: PMP Implementation: Background & Next Steps · Introduction to the PMP Three goals: define the issue, establish goals and objectives, and: recommend strategies and actions to manage

We Have Come a Long Way…

North of the Bow River, people continued to dump

sewage into the river. This continued until 1940 when a

pipe was built under the Bow River to connect the north

side of the City to the Bonnybrook Plant.

In 1956, there were still outhouses. Special trucks were

used to collect and haul waste to the Bonnybrook Plant.

In 1961, the last truck, known as the Honey Wagon was

retired.
