Taylor's latest release reunites her with Grammy-winning producer Jim Gaines (Santana, Stevie Ray Vaughan) and the same team of studio pros that made White Sugar such an infectious pleasure. When the moment comes, the guitarist launches into one of her incendiary solos. "Diamonds in the Dirt," a song about the process of emotional recovery, shows off the softer, more melodic qualities in Taylor's singing and playing, as well as her willingness to reveal and heal. "Writing, for me, is very personal," she says. "All the songs on this album are autobiographical. It's basically a chance to put thoughts and fears to paper." On its ninth release Analog Africa unearths musical gems from Angola, the former Portuguese colony in south central Africa. The compilation 'Angola Soundtrack' includes tracks 1965 – 1976, arguably the golden era of Angolan music. Angolan music is truly unique and stands on its own as a sound that can onl be found in that part of the world. Rhythms such Rebita, Kazukuta, Semba and Merengue, all of which are presented on 'Angola Soundtrack', might be unfamiliar to most listeners, but they are superbly melodic, highly danceable hypnotic, raw, quintessentially beautiful - and totally addictive. The nascent Angolan music scene was set on fire by a small group of courageous singers, backed by an array of super tight bands and led by extraordinary guitarists who revolutionized the musical and the political panorama of the 60s and 70s. These great electric bands of Angola were a well-kept secret until the late 90s when France-based music label Buda Musique released a short-lived series of Angolan music compiled by Ariel de Bigault. Inspired and taken aback, these releases proved to be crucially influential to Analog Africa’s founder Samy Ben Redjeb: “Listening to Angolan music suddenly became part of my daily life and when my label was founded a few years later, the idea of releasing an Angolan compilation was never too far away from my mind. I had no idea what to expect from the trip - more than once was I told to expect complicated situations, and that if I thought I knew Africa, I should wait until I experience Luanda. I was prepared for the worst. Robyn Ludwick Out Of These Blues CSCCD1068 8713762010683 CD CONTINENTAL SONG CITY BLUES Many a green song writer has squeezed callow lyric from near-empty diaries, hoping that one day life might catch up with their words. Robyn Ludwick entered the world of song primed by years of life lived. When pen did come to paper, it teemed with ink--and was driven by a hand softened by love and strengthened by life. Her earliest nights found her sprawled across the folding chairs of many a Hill Country dancehall, eyelids closing on her grandparents, as they twirled each other over creaky wooden floors. Her older brothers would grow to be Two of Texas’ favorite sons, Bruce and Charlie Robison. While her schoolmates were embracing the rituals of small-town Texas; Robyn was teaching herself guitar and sneaking off to Austin, immersing herself in the city’s wealth of live music. Eventually she’d settle there, where rent was paid working the door at the world famous Continental Club. Robyn shared many a lean meal with her brothers in those South Austin days. From their Goodwill couch, she plotted a stable future for her and the family she hoped to one day have. She shelved dreams of a career in music and enrolled in The University of Texas School of Engineering and eventually took work in that field. Just after she and husband John “lunchmeat” Ludwick had their first child, and felt their road had been paved, Robyn was laid off. The intensity of such life changes woke Robyn’s sleeping songwriter. "It just pretty much poured out at that point. I guess it was time, you know." Robyn cashed in her pension, and dove headlong into her craft. The critics agreed that it was time, as 2005’s For So Long , Produced by the legendary Danny Barnes of Bad Livers, was named a top 10 album of the year by both the Austin Chronicle, and renowned Austin public radio station KUT-FM. It went to No. 1 on the Euro-Americana Music Chart and earned her a raved-about SXSW 2006 showcase (sponsored by No Depression, the Americana magazine), and a slot at the 2006 Austin City Limits Music Festival. After many acclaimed performances for American and European audiences, Robyn got to work on her second album. Too Much Desire, another set of soulful originals. Released in 2008 to many a stunning review, contributions from Grammy nominee Eliza Gilkyson, Rich Brotherton, Mike Hardwick and more, coalesce with a timeless execution on Robyn’s part, the effect of which is, as AllMusic puts it: “…elegant and graceful as a straight razor; it takes no prisoners, makes no apologies. Born Carey Bell Harrington in the blues-fertile state of Mississippi, he was already playing the harp when he was eight and working professionally with his godfather, pianist Lovie Lee, at 13. The older and more experienced Lee brought Carey with him to Chicago in search of steady musical opportunities in 1956. Gigs frequently proved scarce, and Carey eventually took up electric bass, playing behind Robert Nighthawk, Johnny Young, and his mentor Big Walter Horton. Finally, in 1969, Bell made his debut album for Delmark, this album which is now re-released on 6 Spices, and he was on his way. The Boston-born son of Irish immigrants, Joe Derrane is among the finest button accordionists in the history of Celtic music. He is also a somewhat elusive legend in the genre. After recording during the 1940s and ‘50s, he disappeared from the traditional music circuit for thirty-five years, popping up again in 1994 at the Irish Folk Festival at Wolf Trap. Since his career’s resurgence he has proved wrong F. Scott Fitzgerald’s famous quote “there are no second acts in American lives”. Over the past 16 years, Derrane has written 22 tunes and his current writing and recorded output is the most imaginative and inventive of his career. In 2004 Derrane received one of the highest honors for a traditional musician: the National Endowment for the Arts’ National Heritage Fellowship. The album was recorded at Derrane’s home on Grove Lane in Massachusetts—the home he and his wife Anne shared for 53 years before her passing in 2008—over a series of sessions with acoustic guitarist John McGann. Notable tracks include the original tango “Tango Derrane“ and the romantic ode “Waltzing with Anne” written in memory of his late wife. GROVE LANE firmly establishes Derrane as one of the great masters of the button accordion. No one sounds like Joe Derrane or has as significant an impact on the rising generation of aspiring button accordion virtuosos. They played their first gig in 1949 and are still going strong. They made their first broadcast for the BBC in 1952 and their first commercial recording in 1954. Their other claim to fame was opening the famous Cavern Club in Liverpool in 1957 where they held a residency for two years. A Skiffle group named The Quarrymen led by one John Lennon also made its debut at The Cavern and eventually ousted the Trad bands – the rest is history. Yusuf Azak Turn On The Long Wire SBTRA016 859704030185 CD SONG BY TOAD RECORDS ROCK/POP After moving down from Aberdeen to Glasgow, Yusuf starting playing with a group of other musicians, all of whom were very blues-influenced. He started to develop his own songs, influenced by favourites Bob Dylan and Nick Drake, and these were more folky, and he started to record them by himself on a four-track tape recorder. His first EP, Gazelle, was recorded entirely on four-track, but on follow-up Light Procession he started to layer tape and digital recordings, experimenting a lot with recording strings onto tape, looping and occasionally reverse-looping them. The strings are strongly to the fore on debut album Turn on the Long Wire, occasionally as backing, for colour and texture, and often to provide secondary melodic interplay, woven in with the vocals and guitar. To produce a cleaner sound a lot of these parts were recorded digitally, although tape is still clearly present, lending a warmth to the occasionally quite strange atmosphere of this album. Where we’re going is the 3rd in a trilogy of Burton Greene’s arrangements and extended compositions based on little known, mainly Jewish works of writers and composers active since before World War II until the present time. What do we stand for?’ His spiritual teacher Swami Satchidananda used to say ‘We have to Under-Stand, we have to learn to stand under where we’re standing!’ Which of course is linked to ‘If you don’t know where you come from, then how do you know where you’re going?’ Hence the title of this album..
