Louis Prima’s hot trumpet and horny vocals aided by his hot combo The Witnesses, led by tenor saxophonist Sam Butera, and Keely Smith’s clear jazzy vocal, dispensed an exciting mixture of jazz, bop, R&B and novelty that successfully entertained music lovers in the late 1950s. Louis Prima was not just Louis Prima - he was the "Big Daddy" of them all! And he was the leader of the most talked about attraction in America. This box set, containing 80 tracks, catches them at their ebullient best. Also included is a 24 page book with the Louis Prima story, discography and rare photos.

Of all the musical giants of the past seven decades, specifically since the days of the big swing bands and Dixieland jazz, there is one who stands out amongst them all as the greatest contributor towards modern music and the course it eventually took. His name is Louis Prima and it all started when he took off at the once-famed 52nd Street in New York City. As a bold, talented, ambitious youngster, Prima rose from the rank-and-file of musicians in the now acknowledged great training ground of New Orleans in 1934 and headed for the "Big Time" in the city of New York. After a few weeks of waiting for the right opening, he was finally given the opportunity to debut at the then inconspicuous "Famous Door." By virtue of the Louis Prima Band becoming a smash hit in the small-but-jumping club, the entire 52nd Street, between Fifth Avenue and Broadway, was renamed "Swing Street." Going into the fifties, Elvis Presley had the country "All Shook Up" and when asked where he got the wiggle, he replied, "From Louis Prima, of course." Louis knew that the times were changing and if he wanted to stay on top, he would have to change as well. He down-sized the big band to a small group and added the sounds and talents of the great sax-man Sam Butera and vocalist, Keely Smith. He performed magic again by developing a shuffle beat, combined with a New Orleans southern rock sound, added the wailing sax and for comedic value, transformed the vocalist into the dead-pan partner that he could play off of. Needless to say, history was again being written. The string of hits that followed included "Just a Gigolo - I Ain't Got Nobody," "Buona Sera," "Black Magic," "Zooma, Zooma," "When You're Smilin'," and on and on.

Cannonball Adderley’s alto sax had that special immediacy. His penchant for melody, mastery of the blues, and expert use of the rhythm section brought him a large following, the likes of which straight jazz would never enjoy again. This 57 track set follows Cannonball’s story from 1955 through to 1959 where he is joined by the likes of Miles Davis, Art Blakey, Kenny Clarke, Bill Evans and Milt Jackson. Also included is a 24 page book with the Cannonball Adderley story, discography and rare photos.

Cannonball Adderley’s alto saxophone style displayed a solid grasp on ballads, blues and driving bebop tunes. He played with an irresistible sense of swing and a sound that mixed elements of Charlie Parker’s diamond hard luminescence, Benny Carter’s beautifully rich alto tone, Louis Jordan’s strutting jump band phraseology and a touch of sanctified gospel feel. These were the classic elements of hard bop, which Cannonball turned into a homogeneous style, that established him as the most popular exponent of the genre. In the late 1950’s Cannonball absorbed more influences, such as aspects of the work of Miles Davis, Bill Evans, John Coltrane and even Ornette Coleman into his playing. After Ygdrassil split, Coenders collaborated with drummer and soundscape artist Wim Sebo. He adds a wonderful dynamic layer to Coenders’ poetic songs. Billy Cooper (1883), Walter Bulwer (1888) and Daisy Bulwer (c.1892) were active musicians in rural Norfolk for over half a century. These recordings, made together with visiting friends in the Bulwers' cottage in the village of Shipdham, capture the style, vitality and robustness of the music they played for dancing in pubs and at Saturday night hops and wedding parties. Earlier editions of English Country Music appeared in 1965 and 1976. This third edition is re-mastered and contains new notes and many additional recordings.
