Newly-crowned French Open

champion Simon Halep said

she was inspired to win her

first Grand Slam title by her

manager Virginia Ruzici’s feats

40 years ago at Roland

Garros. Unt i l Saturday,

Ruzici’s 1978 Paris triumph

over Mima Jausovec was the

last time a Romanian, man or

woman, had won a Grand

Slam but Halep ended that long

wait as she hit back to beat

American Sloane Stephens 3-

6 6-4 6-1. In doing so, Halep

equalled the feat of American

seven-times French Open

champion Chris Evert who also

Simona Halep’s French Open title

inspired by Virgina Ruzici

suffered three Grand Slam

final losses before capturing

the 1974 French title.

“I t’s a mot ivation and

inspiration,” the 26-year-old

Halep, who lifted the junior title

10 years ago, told reporters with

Ruzici sitting alongside her.

(49kg), who upstaged Olympic

champion Hasanboy Dusmatov

in the quarterfinals, settled for a

bronze medal along with two

others after a semifinal loss in

the President’s Cup in Astana,

Kazakhstan today.

The 22-year-old Lalbiakkima

lost to local favourite Erzhan

Zhomart to bow out in the

semifinal stage.

“For us, the bout belonged to

Lalbiakkima. He turned in

another except ional

performance but unfortunately

this time, he ended on the losing

side,” coach Jai Singh Patil,

Also ending with bronze

medals were former world

youth champion Sachin Siwach

women’s draw.

Sachin lost to Filipino Rogen

Ladon in his semifinal clash.

“The compet i t ion in this

so far,” Patil said.

Ramit Tandon is the sole new

face in the Indian men’s squad

for the Asian Games scheduled

in Jakarta and Palembang from

August 18 to September 2. The

women’s team has two fresh

faces in Tamil Nadu’s Sunayna

it was decided that the same

team will compete in the Chinese

automatically in the women’s

side. India had won a record

four medals at the Incheon

Asian Games four years ago

including a men’s team gold.

The criteria that the SRFI

adopted for selecting the men’s

team was to give weightage to

players who have been

regulars on the professional

circuit. With five of them (Vikram

Malhotra is the fifth) in the list,

the team composition was easy

with June PSA rankings as the

key parameter. Saurav and

Harinder as the top two will play

both the singles and team event

while Ramit and Mahesh will

be part of the team event.

Indian women faced abject

humiliation after Bangladesh

beat the six-time champions

by three wickets to win their

maiden Asia Cup trophy here

today. The tournament turned

out to be the most

embarrassing for the 'Women

in Blue' as they lost to the

minnows twice inside a week.

The tournament also raised

a big question mark about the

utility of two veterans Mithali

Raj and Jhulan Goswami in

the shortest format even as

the BCCI is forced to carry

on with them due to lack of

credible rep lacements.

Needing two off the last

del ivery o f the match,

Jahanara Alam hi t ri va l

He is now only the third Indian

to win the prestigious title after

Mohinder Gill (who won five

triple jump titles between 1969

and 1971) and discus thrower

Vikas Gowda (2012).

The effort comes just weeks after

he wrote a letter to the AFI about

his decision to skip the upcoming

Asian Games due to a strained

neck. The decision, a tough one

in Tejaswin’s own words, was

taken to avoid any career-

threatening injury. Tejaswin,

who crossed 2.24m at his final

attempt with the bar at that

height, earlier cleared 2.08,

2.13, 2.18 and 2.21 in his first

attempts.
