multinational participation in variousscientific initiatives at global level forthe last six, seven years and with thequality of input by Pakistan, he sawfuture of science bright in the country.

Earlier, Dr. Mustanser Jehangir, D.G.PINSTECH and Dr. Shahida Waheed,Course Coordinator of the seminar, presented details on various projectsinitiated by PAEC in environmentalstudies.

This three-day seminar was precededby a three-day workshop involvinginteraction between known scientists ofthe world on the subject.

Climate Change Scenario ThreateningUrgent Mitigating Measures Imperative: Dr. Ishfaq Ahmad

Global climate change scenarioresulting, among other adverse effects,in global warming, is threatening forhuman survival and needs urgentattention of the world community formitigation.

This was stated by Dr. Ishfaq Ahmad,Special Advisor to the Prime Minister,while inaugurating a three-day seminart i t l e d “ R e c e n t A d v a n c e s i nE n v i r o n m e n t a l S c i e n c e a n dManagement” on April 11, 2007. Theseminar was jointly organized byPakistan Atomic Energy Commission(PAEC) and International AtomicEnergyAgency (IAEA).

He said that in view of the importance ofthe climate change and its impact onPakistan's agriculture, food and waterresources, Prime Minister hasconstituted a high powered committeecomprising of Minister for Food andAgriculture, Minister for Water andPower, Minister for Science andTechnology, Minister for Environment,D e p u t y C h a i r m a n , P l a n n i n gCommission and Special Advisor to thePrime Minister. The committee has themandate to study the effects of thisphenomenon and propose remedialmeasures.

Parallel to this effort, the governmenthas created a Global Change ImpactStudy Centre (GCISC) which is workingsince 2003 and is now generating a lot

of useful data on climate change andhas successfully come up with variousclimate modeling of the region.

He paid tributes to Pakistan AtomicEnergy Commission (PAEC) for itsefforts in excellent work in environmentin collaboration with world bodies onthe subject. Nuclear techniques areex t reme ly e f fec t i ve too ls fo renvironmental monitoring enabling themanagers to devise solutions of theproblem.

To a question by the media on theuseful role of nuclear energy forstemming the global warming, he saidnuclear energy has an important role toplay as it does not generate greenhouse gases, which are chieflyresponsible for global warming.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. LiaquatHussain, a US based scientist ofPakistani origin, who was participatingin the seminar as representative ofIAEA, said that he was impressed withthe PINSTECH Programme and itscapabi l i t ies for envi ronmentalmonitoring and diagnosis. He said, apart from PINSTECH Programme, hewas also the pioneering member of aSUPARCO initiative for studying thereasons for the winter smog inPakistan and neighboring India.

Farmers' Day is a regular event of

PAEC's Nuclear Institute of Agriculture

(NIA) Tando Jam which is organized

almost every year with the prime

objective to disseminate technologies

to the growers of Sindh province. This

year, it was celebrated on 7 March,

2007 as its 25 appearance. Dr. Ansar

Parvez, Member Science, PAEC was

the chief guest on this occasion. Before

start of the function, he had a detailed

visit to the laboratories where he

discussed on-going research activities

with the scientists.

Later on, he visited the experimental

farm along with the Director, NIA and

met the growers who were gathered in

large number to view the performance

of different wheat varieties released by

NIA from time to time. During the

proceedings of the Farmers' Day, Syed

th

th

Khursheed Hussain Shah, Director,

NIA welcomed the participants and

highlighted the achievements of NIA.

The Institute has not only evolved high

yielding varieties of important crops but

has a l so i n t r oduced va r i ous

techniques, methodologies to enhance

the crop productivity.

The participants appreciated NIA for its

significant contribution in the field of

agriculture. Dr. Ansar Parvez, Member,

Science, addressed the gathering. He

appreciated the scientists and the

growers for developing close contacts

with each other .

domain,"the Commission has evolved

more than 58 high yield crop varieties

through research and development

and more rigorous efforts are being

made to further increase farm

productivity ".He mentioned that PAEC has

developed a model Drip Irrigation

System (DIS) which saves precious

irrigation water in addition to enhancing

production by means of timely delivery

of water to crops and plants. This

programme is extendable in future.

He added that the Prime Minister has

already announced Rs 15 billion

program for drip irrigation system in

the country and PAEC will be taking the

lead in this field. Apart from KINPOE,

PAEC has established Pakistan

8,800 MW Nuclear Power targetassigned to Pakistan Atomic EnergyCommission (PAEC) is well within ourreach by 2030. Six sites are beingstudied throughout the country forlocation of these plants. We are inactive contact with multiple sourcesand friends for negotiations to executethe programme.

This was stated by Chairman PAEC,Mr. Anwar Ali while talking to mediaafter convocation 2007 of the KANUPPInstitute of Nuclear Power Engineeringheld on Thursday, March 29,2007.

He said that the estimated capacity ofeach plant would be 1000 MW, as thejoint maintenance and operations ofthe plants is easy and economical, ifthey are of similar size.

He said that Karachi was likely to getmore nuclear power plants in theneighborhood of existing KANUPP.When enquired about the schedule of

initiating work on these plants, he said that all thepreliminary preparatory work was afoot and it ishoped that site works would commence within fewyears.

To another question regarding the country's ownresources for construction and installation of nuclearpower plants, he replied that our self-relianceprogramme was moving forward.

When asked about other socio-economiccontributions made by the PAEC, he replied, “PAECis operating 13 Cancer Hospitals across the country, where more than 350,000 patients benefit annuallyand six more such units were under construction withemphasis to ensure provision of effective medicalfacilities to people of remote areas".

Earlier, in his welcome address to the convocation, the Chairman pointed out that in agriculture
