Disruptions.A N E W E X H I B I T I O N O N M I A M I B E A C H

Presented in Collins Park, December 3–8, 2019, this exhibition highlights works by an intergenerational group of Argentine artists whose urban interventions take on notions of space, subjectivity, and environmental issues.

In the last phase of the partnership with Buenos Aires, Art Basel Cities has sought to bring Argentine artists of different generations, formations, and outputs to an international platform such as Miami Beach during Art Basel – allowing for new artistic discoveries, highlighting the strength, dynamism and vibrancy of the Argentine art scene. ‘Disruptions’, as its title suggests, focuses on intervening in an urban landscape enabling the viewer to interact and be confronted with works outside the more traditional exhibition space. More than a merely aesthetic proposition, art in this space can become a tool for encountering, interacting, and questioning potentially overly familiar environment.

Asking the audience to move within her work, conceptual art pioneer Marie Orensanz, known for her experimental forays into philos-ophy, mathematics, and geometry, will present ‘Invisible’ (2018), a three meter-high, keyhole-shaped iron structure, through which viewers may pass. It features the word “invisible” perforated into its upper arch – only apparent to those standing directly beneath it. For over two decades, Graciela Hasper’s work has been defined by bold colors sharpened by powerful geometric shapes. Here in her installation ‘Intemperie (Outdoors)’ (2019), Hasper translates this aesthetic to a series of painted aluminum cubes that are simultane-ously enclosed and exposed with the viewer able to walk through and within each structure.

Physical interaction is also key in Marcela Sinclair’s ‘Derrame (Spill)’ (2019), an installation that deconstructs and reimagines Ugo Rondinone’s ‘Miami Mountain’ (2016) – one of Collins Park’s now iconic permanent sculptures. Consisting of thousands of colored stones painted to match the hues of ‘Miami Mountain’ that will be scattered across the grounds of the park, ‘Derrame (Spill)’ will invite the audience to participate in the work, by moving the stones and building their own individual sculptures. In her work ‘The Source’ (2019), Agustina Woodgate acknowledges water as a fundamental building block of the human body and the earth, and considers when its purity is compromised by contamination, blocked access, failed responses to natural disasters and other catastrophes and the impact this can have. This functional, above-ground drinking fountain is set within a facade of coral rock and features an exposed system of pipes that connect, like a puzzle, to four sections containing multiple fountains.

Using the materials of the work themselves as a focus, Matías Duville’s experimental landscapes feature tortured depictions of organic elements that expose discomfiting facts of geography, evolution, and industry. In ‘Big Bang America’ (2019) a rock crushes a pipe, pinning it to the ground and sending both ends into the sky challenging viewers to consider the impact of the industry on the planet, and what happens when nature is subverted and altered by an artificial force. Pablo Reinoso’s ‘Still Tree’ (2019) encases a fully-grown but uprooted tree within a protective iron sculpture. This metal skeleton functions as a shield for the dead tree trunk and emulates the protective conditions that medieval armor offered to the bodies of soldiers. As a reaction to the overuse of nature, ‘Still Tree’ takes on poignant new dimensions when placed within a state that faces environmental threats, including at-risk ecosystems like the Everglades.

“While we appeal to the curiosity of the public, to their capacity of amazement, reflec-tion, complicity, and surprise, ‘Disruptions’ also necessarily implies a commitment to

the unknown, a rupture of the status quo,”

-curators Diana Wechsler and Florencia Battiti.

TEAM

SPOTLIGHT

Name & position?Alexairis, I am the Head of Hospitality Services!

Where are you from? And a background on you?I’m from the beautiful Island, Dominican Republic also known as “Quis-queya la Bella” land of merengue & bachata and home of great baseball players.

Most memorable moment working at The Plymouth?Having the opportunity to support one of our most frequent guest during a challenging time when she was visiting Miami to receive chemo treat-ments and seeing her through her recovery process made her an imme-diate part of our Plymouth Family.. Not only because we were her home away from home but also because we were able to comfort her during her hard times and now seeing her in remission still brings me so much joy.

Most rewarding part about working at The Plymouth?Creating memorable experiences and going above and beyond for our guests, but also I truly love being able to lead my team to success and guiding them to become the best version of themselves.

Favorite thing to do in Miami? I enjoy taking advantage of the outdoors, from watching the sunset to long walks on the beach. Trying new and unique fusions of food and brunching during the weekend makes me extremely proud to live on this beautiful beach! My favorite restaurant is La Mar by Gaston Acurioand the rooftop at Sugar, it is the best view of our Downtown area and the drinks are amazing!

What do you love most about Miami?Miami is a melting pot which makes it so unique, it’s amazing how one can find so many different cultures from all over the World. It is a very lively city unlike any other, spiced up by the various Latino culture that have imprinted their mark throughout the past and more recent history. This city has it all good weather, nice beaches, good food, great parties with lots of dancing but most of all beautiful and interesting people.

Favorite roll/drink at Blue Ribbon?Spicy Tuna Special roll with Avocado. For drinks: Lychee Martini, the risqué Margarita and the Cucumber Minty for a hot summer day is my all time fav!

The Early Years.

Remarkably, the iconic Plymouth Hotel building has hardly changed since its construction in 1940. Its strong lines and noteworthy forms have inspired the design and development of Miami Beach architecture for decades.

Its distinctiveness was recognized by none other than Barbara Capitman and the Miami Design Preservation League, whose early rallies in the 1980’s were often held on the front porch at The Plymouth.

Its design departs from standard Deco formulas and incorporates an elegant juxtaposition of forms and geometries. This is form-giving archi-tecture with its recall of the 1939 New York World’s Fair. And this is also inspiring architecture.

This entire property was beautifully planned. From the spectacular corner tower entrance, through the ovalesque lobby all done-up in white marble and the beautiful murals of Ramon Chatov and out to the pool and court-yard.

This remains a very special historic property.

Book cover, " Deco Delights-Preserving the Beauty and Joy of Miami Beach Architecture."

The Plymouth Cottage, formerly known as Ansonia, 1921, was the first build-ing on the block. The facade remained untouched during the renovation.
