History Humans have inhabited the area of Plitvice Lakes
for thousands of years
Croats were permanently settled in this area since
the beggining of 7th century
Plitvice Lakes were declared a national park on
April 4, 1949
Geografical location
Plitvice Lakes are located
close to the Bosnia &
Hercegovina border in the
Dinaric mountains, 110 km
south of Zagreb
About 16 lakes
Plitvice lakes consist of 16 lakes (Upper
and Lower lakes) :
- Upper lakes : Prošćansko, Vir, Galovac…
- Lower lakes : Kozjak, Milanovac…
Forested hills are good water sources for
lakes – main source : White and Black
river, rain, snow…

Deposition of material
Dolomites,limestone…
Plitvice Lakes are rich with karst rocks like
dolomites and limestone -> deposition of
calcite (the main construction
material)causes the formation of new
travertine barriers,waterfalls and paths.

season
In spring water is quick and wild, in
summer it shine and flow slower , in
autumn water is covered with leaves and
it’s preparing for winter when water turns
whole nature around into a frozen
kingdom…
