Hands on dissections – 30 on first come basis

Observation and participation-30 on first come basis

All of them have direct access to talks/discussions

Objective the course: This course is aimed at surgeons (Orthopedic/ Plastic/ Neurosurgeons)

who are interested in performing brachial plexus surgery. This course

focuses on technical difficulties in managing a case with brachial plexus

injury right from decision making to identifying structures during

dissection. This course will provide the delegates a unique combination of

hands on cadaveric dissection & case scenarios demonstrating pathologic

changes in the brachial plexus injury with treatment options. Delegates will

get an opportunity to interact with the masters in the management of

brachial plexus injury from both India and abroad. Delegates will get the

experience of cadavers which are embalmed by unique technique which

retains the best characters and gives a pleasurable learning experience.

Overview of the courseCourse content: the course will be divided into 6 sessions, each of 4 and a

half hours duration

There will be no Lectures/presentations. All the delegates will be mailed a

comprehensive list of reading material, and will be expected to come

prepared with the basic theoretical understanding of the anatomy and

function of brachial plexus.

Total no. of delegates: 52.

Sessions: 1, 2 & 3.The delegates will be divided into 26 pairs. Each pair will be assigned one

half of an embalmed cadaver. Each procedure will be first demonstrated by

one of the senior faculty and then each pair of delegates will perform the

dissection on their allotted cadaver. Each operating table will be

supervised by one faculty. The sessions will be organized in such a way

that the pair of delegates working on the right side of the body will not get

in the way of the pair working on the other side.

2. Infraclavicular dissection of brachial plexus3. Dissection of spinal accessory, suprascapular, pectoral and

4. Dissection of axillary, musculo-cutaneus , median, radial and ulnar

nerves (Somsak transfer, Oberlin transfer)

phrenic nerves

6. Dissection and transfer of Intercostal nerves7. Contralateral C7 transfer (through subcutaneous route using

Procedures to be covered during hands on dissection (sessions 1,2 &3)

5. Posterior approach to suprascapular nerve

vascularized ulnar nerve graft and direct cC7 to lower trunk transfer

through pre-spinal route)

1. Supraclavicular dissection of brachial plexus

interosseous nerve to ECRB and nerve to supinator to EDC transfers

Sessions: 5 & 6

Selected case scenarios: Selected cases will be presented before the

distinguished faculty. The emphasis will be on the clinical features and

intraoperative findings (pictures & videos). The possible management

options will be discussed, and the actual procedure which was performed

will be presented. Then, the long term post-operative result of similar cases

managed in the same way (collected by the faculty) will be presented.

Session-4

Over two sessions (4 & 6) we expect to discuss 18-20 case scenarios,

covering the entire spectrum of partial and complete brachial plexus

lesions in adults and infants presenting with primary brachial plexus injury.

8. Nerve to brachialis to anterior interosseous nerve, anterior

Procedures to be covered (demonstration only):Shoulder arthrodesis, wrist arthrodesis, finger joint arthrodesis, steindler

flexorplasty, Latissimus dorsi to biceps transfer, Free functioning gracilis

muscle transfer
