Dear Livain Michaud,
Please turn down Taseko Mines Ltd.’s proposed “New Prosperity” gold-copper mine project in
the Cariboo-Chilcotin. At best it is disingenuous(my granny would have another word for it) of
Taseko to present this as a ”˜quick fix’ to the many problems inherent in its rejected project.By
Taseko’s own admission, this revised mine proposal would be even more environmentally
damaging than the first that was rejected by your government in November 2010.
Neither Fish Lake nor Little Fish Lake would be threatened were it not for changes in the
Fisheries Act which allow mining companies to turn living lakes into tailings ponds. I strongly
request this government close the legislative loophole that turns Canada’s freshwater bodies into
toxic mine tailings, and ensures the intent of our Fisheries Act is no longer undermined.
It would be a complete waste of taxpayers’ money to spend time studying this resubmitted
proposal. I urge you to turn down Taseko’s “New Prosperity” mine proposal without further
review.
Sincerely,
Sandra Leckie

Dear Livain Michaud,
Re: the proposed “New Prosperity” gold-copper mine project in the Cariboo-Chilcotin.
I do not understand how or why this new proposal from Taseko Mines is even being considered.
PLease reject the proposal and respect the rights of the Xeni Gwet'in Fist Nation and help them
protect their environment for their future generations.
Please show respectful leadership in this matter and do your part to protect the fish and wildlife
of this area. Please honour the intent of the Fisheries Act. Show that as a government you respect
the laws we have in place to defend our ecosystems. Listen to the centuries deep knowledge and
understanding of the First Nations people who inhabit the area and are against the proposed
development.
Sincerely,
Pauline Holdstock

Dear Livain Michaud,

the Cariboo-Chilcotin. By Taseko’s own admission, the revised mine proposal currently under
consideration would be even more environmentally damaging than the first proposal that was
rejected by the federal government in November 2010.
The proposal under current review would see Fish Lake rendered unusable for up to 33 years and
Little Fish Lake destroyed, which is crucial to the ecosystem that supports the unique trout
population. It would also be highly damaging to at-risk grizzly bear populations, as noted in the
first federal environmental assessment.
Furthermore, the Tsilhqot’in National Government strongly opposes this proposal.
Fish Lake would never have been threatened in the first place were it not for changes in the
Fisheries Act which allow mining companies to turn living lakes into tailings ponds. I urge you,
in the strongest terms, to close the legislative loophole that allows destruction of Canada’s
freshwater bodies for toxic mine tailings, and to ensure the intent of our Fisheries Act is no

first federal environmental assessment.

Dear Livain Michaud,
What will we have left to live on if our entire planet is destroyed in the name of corporate
profits--or anyone's profits?
Human beings, as a species, are so certain of our "god-likeness" that we're willing to kill
ourselves for money in the bank--but we can't eat, breathe, drink or otherwise sustain ourselves
with loonies, toonies, and paper dollar bills. Neither can the other living beings on this planet
survive on a diet of cash in any denomination.
If you individually want to starve yourselves to death, be my guest; but inflicting your death
wish on everyone else is morally, ethically wrong.
You know that. You grew up with morals and ethics. Please go back in your minds and hearts to
that much simpler time, and engage your minds and hearts in making a morally and ethically
honest decision.

obvious bias to the power of money, in amounts that only a few have, and that is how it is a great
injustice and an important contradiction to the values that this country holds dear (like
democracy and equality). Not only the lakes are being threatened here but the very core of what
makes this country a good place to live. If you let money have a precedent over people's voices,
then you threaten all citizens of this country (and the world).
The value of clean water and pristine nature is well above the value of jewlery. We cannot trade
life for gold any more, it is outmoded. There is no recreating a pristine environment once it's
been polluted or fragmented, and the loss of wildlife is indeed a great loss, even if not everybody
can see that. It is no secret that water is scarce in many places in the world. Millions of people
never get a glass of crystaline clean water in their lifetime, and they have to walk for miles every
day to get a bucket of muddy and polluted water to live. It is an insult to all those people to
threaten the sources of clean water here. Canada's wild places are a heritage for humanity, and
there is no greater wealth than fresh water, and life sustaining water bodies.
It is unfair to put the whole population of the Cariboo Chilcotin area at risk of suffering water
scarcity and losing their food security, for the benefit of a handful of investors who may not even
be Canadian. Nothing assures us that the money made from a mine here would actually stay in
Canada or benefit anyone in the Cariboo Chilcotin region. It has already been said that the jobs at
the mine site would go to people from elsewhere, and the economic benefit for the region would
be that those people would have money to spend here. Well, that is one dire proposal. That
money could be used for drugs and alcohol, or prostitution for all we know, and the big money,
not the salaries but the actual utilities, that would be leaving and going to the pockets of the few
already millionaire stock holders who would then have even more weight to push around
bullying governments and communities anywhere.
Canadian mining companies are a threat to fresh water bodies everywhere. They are a threat in
Mexico, in Guatemala, in Argentina, in Peru, in Ecuador, in El Salvador. They are bullying and
pushing and comitting all sort of human rights violations in the whole continent. We cannot
allow them to have even more power. Right now they have already shown they have more power
than the very government of Canada, because the government said no and here we are again
facing a second review, so who got paid?
Furthermore, the Tsilhqot’in National Government strongly opposes this proposal.
The Prosperity and New Prosperity mine proposals threaten not only the lakes as physical
entities, they threaten sites of high cultural value. The whole area around Fish Lake is a burial
site, and a site of ceremony. It has been highly regarded and respected by people here for
thousands of years. If we were talking about people digging out Christian graveyards, the
opposition would be immediate. This is clearly a case of discrimination and racism and cultural
abuse, when a place full of ancient remains is being put at risk of being destroyed, like it's
nothing. There has been the unintelligent argument that Tsilhqotin people don't live in the area,
but the only reason that would be so is that they were put in reservations which they couldn't
leave for two or more generations. They were removed from their land and then the land was
taken over. Ranchers came to the area after the killings and they fenced up whatever they could
and called it their property. How could that possibly be legal in any system? None of this
territory was ever ceded so there are no legal grounds for the government of Canada to call this
land crown land or act like there is an ownership of it. We cannot go on avoiding the central
issue here, which is the issue of property, of rights to land. The proposal of bringing a mine to
the Cariboo Chilcotin is also a proposal to bring in 500 families who would settle in the area.
They would buy up the land (from the crown, even though it is not crown land) and set up 500
more ranches that the average Tsilhqotin person could never afford, right in their own territory,
right under their noses. The social effects of that would be disastrous, there could be nothing but
hostility springing up from that gentrification, and it would be justified. The reservations would
go from having been concentration camps to becoming ghettos, nothing good about either of
those. Racial tensions are already high in this area, and bringing in unwellcome settlers would
make things far worse. People of William's Lake and surrounding communities would be paying
for all of that, the precarious balance that has been achieved here would be lost. There have been
the unintelligent comments in the papers, that people in the Chilcotin have to take a hit for the
benefit of the country, but it makes no sense to ask people here to sacrifice their water sources,
their food security, and their social balance, so that people in Ontario get better medical care
(which is pretty scarce around here, by the way). The whole idea of the mine is unfair in so many
ways, you cannot possibly justify it.
Fish Lake would never have been threatened in the first place were it not for changes in the
Fisheries Act which allow mining companies to turn living lakes into tailings ponds. I urge you,
in the strongest terms, to close the legislative loophole that allows destruction of Canada’s
freshwater bodies for toxic mine tailings, and to ensure the intent of our Fisheries Act is no
longer undermined.
It would be a complete waste of taxpayers’ money to spend time studying this resubmitted
proposal. I urge you to turn down Taseko’s “New Prosperity” mine proposal without further
review.
The people of Taseko Mines are at fault for their own economic losses. The years and the money
they already spent, they spent it assuming that their project would go through, which is the same
as saying they assumed they had you in their pocket, and they assumed you would give no
importance to the interest of indigenous people. Throughout the whole process they have acted
as if the Tsilhqotin people didn't exist. It is their own racism and ignorance that already cost
them a fortune and a drop in the value of their stocks, and I don't see why the government of
Canada should support speculators. It would be wise to update the laws that regard mining
exploration, to impede companies from going so far into their plans before any consultation is
made. That would prevent a lot of monetary loss and unnecessary stress. Taseko Mines has done
things wrong, and that's what they're paying for. Their idea is a bad one, the mine they propose
wouldn't even be financially sustainable, as the type of ore and other factors would make it very
expensive to extract anything. Also, if oil and gas prices continue to go up (as they are bound to),
that would increse the cost of extraction more and more. Also, there would be a great cost to the
province to provide electricity and hydro services to their facilities. It would be a gross, costly
mistake that mine. Just holding their picture in my mind makes me sick, to think of all that
destruction and injustice in the name of money and power for a few men. It cannot be allowed, it
will not be allowed.
The Tsilhqotin people and the people of BC and all of Canada deserve much better. We all
deserve a world in which the value of life and justice are well above anything else, and we all
need to move into new ways for economic growth, we need to create economies that are
sustainable, it is urgent, and it is our responsibility. If there is hope for those changes anywhere
in the world, that place is Canada. There is still hope here, hope that people won't be swept aside
or stepped on by corporations made more powerful than their representative governments. Hope
that people will be empowered and their voices heard, hope that the Earth will be cherished and
protected, and indigenous peoples and cultures will be valued and appreciated and honored, for
the benefit of all. Protecting Fish Lake is for the benefit of ALL.
Sincerely,
Carmen Núñez

Subject: *****SPAM***** Stop the “New Prosperity” Mine at Fish Lake
Dear Livain Michaud,
Please turn down Taseko Mines Ltd.’s proposed “New Prosperity” gold-copper mine project in
the Cariboo-Chilcotin.
I urge you,
in the strongest terms, to close the legislative loophole that allows destruction of Canada’s
freshwater bodies for toxic mine tailings, and to ensure the intent of our Fisheries Act is no
longer undermined.
It would be a complete waste of taxpayers’ money to spend time studying this resubmitted

Subject: *****SPAM***** Stop the “New Prosperity” Mine at Fish Lake
Dear Livain Michaud,
You, as a government, should be stopping the poisoning and destruction of our country. What
these amoral companies do when they come into an area is to find those people who will be
allied with their points of view of how economic development is going to proceed. Then they
separate them from people who see the need for other uses, less tangible to immediate economic
gain, the land. The companies try their best to fragment the communities.socio-economic
agreements that include training and work quotas that have to be met. They might come in once
or twice a year and take pictures to make you think that they are actually there every day, but
again profits reign over land and wildlife.
So conflict-free doesn’t take into consideration the contamination and pollution of air, water and
land, often in some of the most pristine places held sacred to indigenous peoples the globe over,
the damage to watersheds and the complexity of "fixing" the ecological damage left in its wake.
Persistent problems left after the short life of the mine is over, of strip-mining or deep
underground mining, will be left for our children to endure. The impact to quality of ecological
life is serious. What I do not understand is why we have to beg and shame the government into
doing the right thing in protecting our land, waters and wildlife.
What is a conservative after all but one who conserves, one who is committed to protecting and
holding close the things by which we live… And we want to protect and conserve the land on
which we live — our countryside, our rivers and mountains, our plains and meadows and forests.
This is our patrimony. This is what we leave to our children. And our great moral responsibility
is to leave it to them either as we found it or better than we found it.

I urge you,
in the strongest terms, to close the legislative loophole that allows destruction of Canada’s
freshwater bodies for toxic mine tailings, and to ensure the intent of our Fisheries Act is no
longer undermined.
It would be a complete waste of taxpayers’ money to spend time studying this resubmitted
proposal. I urge you to turn down Taseko’s “New Prosperity” mine proposal without further
review.
Sincerely,
Joy Bosse
