Study Guide Co-Vice Presidents’ Message
This is the year to Spread Your Wings and fly with Brandeis! The Study Guide Committee worked diligently to provide a host of opportunities on which you may land. This Guide includes a diverse group of speakers, with topics ranging from immigration to evening bags. There also is an extensive selection of tours, both in the Greater DC area and beyond—from “Wicked Georgetown” to the Ladew Topiary Gardens. If you enjoy working with your hands, you’ll find opportunities to create with wire, glass and leather as well as several knitting groups and classes. And if food is your thing, we have potlucks, cooking and baking classes and two lovely teas. All this plus, among other things, our very popular book clubs and discussion groups and two trips to the Olney Theatre Center. To make the most of the offerings, we encourage you to review this Study Guide and make your selections carefully. Also scrutinize with care the registration guidelines on pages 40-41. Although some activities will fill quickly, wherever possible, we have planned for large groups or multiple sessions. If you have questions about an activity, please contact one of the coordinators. For registration concerns, contact Roz Auerbach, our registrar, at [email protected]. It takes a Committee! We are very grateful to the fabulous members of the 2019-2020 Study Guide Committee. They came up with a myriad of ideas and brought them to fruition. They also attended meetings, gathered ads, edited and proofread (and proofread and proofread). We appreciate, as well, our many members who agreed to serve as coordinators and who offered to host activities. We could not have done this without you. Many thanks, Beth and Barbara

6. GATHERING OF JEWISH ARTISTS IN PARIS: 1900 - 1940
For a few decades before the Holocaust wiped it out, a group of mostly
forgotten European Jews lived, worked, and produced art in a small Parisian enclave. Some sought to escape the anti-Semitism they faced
in France and elsewhere in Europe. Others wanted to break free of the constraints of traditional Jewish life in their hometowns, farms and
shtetls. Together they found a place in Montparnasse, on the Left Bank
of Paris, where they could explore their artistic creativity, learn from each other, and enjoy the freedom of expression they craved. Herb
Mintz, retired intellectual property lawyer and prior speaker at Brandeis, will tell the story of these artists and their extraordinary
gathering in the early twentieth century that came to be known as the Paris School of Art. Join us and learn about this unique piece of Jewish
history!

of campaigning by suffrage organizations, by 1913 only
six states allowed women to vote. Then suffragist Alice Paul came to Washington, D.C. She planned a grand spectacle on Pennsylvania
Avenue the day before Woodrow Wilson’s inauguration, marking the beginning of a more aggressive strategy on the part of the women's

hundred years later. In 539 BCE, Cyrus the Great captured Babylon and issued his famous decree
allowing the Jews to return to Jerusalem, although some remained in Persia. Several generations later, Esther
became queen and lived in the royal compound of Shushan. Join
Babette Margolies, a Smithsonian Volunteer Researcher and BNC member, as she reveals an archaeologic vision of the lives of the people
of Persia in the time of Esther and King Ahasuerus (Xerxes I).
