ATPO Buffalo ConferenceThe Buffalo Conference for allied ophthalmic personnel (AOP) is held annually, and is sponsored by the Association of Technical Personnel in Ophthalmology (ATPO). As the membership organization for AOP, ATPO is committed to high standards and professional ethics dedicated to quality ophthalmic medical care under the direction of an ophthalmologist. ATPO represents AOP, including ophthalmic assistants, technicians, technologists, photographers, and orthoptists.

Membership dues are separate from registration fees; however, you may join ATPO at the time of registration and benefit from the member discount (dues must be included on registration form). No refunds will be issued to individuals joining ATPO after registering at the non-member rate.

This course will take the experienced ophthalmic technician through a review of the anatomy of the orbit to identify signs and symptoms of orbital disorders that can arise within the orbit or as part of a systemic illness. Distinguishing between orbital, periorbital and intraocular lesions, will allow the technician to focus on pertinent parts of history taking when a patient presents with an orbital disorder, and provide the most useful information to the physician for a successful diagnosis.
9:30 - 10:00 am .5 JCAHPO Group AAngle-Closure Glaucoma Deedan Selvadurai, MDThis introductory course will discuss angle-closure glaucoma, a disease that is believed to be a leading cause of blindness in East Asia, and affects approximately half a million people in the United States. The course will define angle-closure glaucoma; identify risk factors associated with the disease, and the role of the technician in the care of a glaucoma patient.

10:15 - 10:45 am .5 JCAHPO Group ADry Eye DiseaseSangita Patel, MD This presentation will provide the attendees with an overview of dry eye disease, including pathophysiology. Discussions will include methods of evaluation for the disease and identifying treatment options for the patient. The attendees will be able to define dry eye disease and discuss its classification.

10:45 - 11:45 am 1.0 JCAHPO Group AThe Eye in ChildhoodJames Reynolds, MD This course will review the normal and abnormal physiology of the eye in childhood. It will help attendees understand refraction and growth, and identify various forms of strabismus. Finally, it will help the participants recognize external findings indicating the need for referral.
11:45 am- 12:15 pm .5 JCAHPO Group AOptimum Vision – Frame Design, Style and Fit Judith Whitehead, BA, COT The basic parts of the ophthalmic frame and general characteristics of common frame materials will be discussed. The effects of various frame and bridge styles, frame dimensions, pupillary distance, and other fitting considerations will be examined in relation to wearer satisfaction. The audience will learn various frame tilts and face forms relative to proper fit, and how to identify improperly fitting frames by observing their position on a patient’s face. Common fitting problems and solutions will be reviewed.
12:15 -1:00 pm Luncheon
1:00 - 1:30 pm .5 JCAHPO Group AAMD Masquerade Syndromes John Legarreta, MDAge-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a deterioration of the eye’s macula. AMD masquerade syndromes can mimic both dry and wet AMD. This course will review the different syndromes that manifest as, and appear as, wet AMD. Discussions will include descriptions of fluid on macular OCT scans and differential diagnosis for wet AMD. Technicians will be able to recognize different conditions of AMD masquerade syndromes.
1:30 - 2:00 pm .5 JCAHPO Group APromise in SightDebbie Bracikowski, COMT, CRA, OSAThis course will discuss three of the most common eye disorders found in a third world country, and a technician’s role in a medical mission. Ptergium, cataract, and strabismus will be described. The technician will be able to list eye pathology related to sun and wind exposure. Examples from a recent trip to Nicaragua will be used throughout the presentation.

2:00 - 2:30 pm .5 JCAHPO Group AInteresting Cases, Fundus and FluoresceinFrank Pari, COA, CRA This presentation will review interesting fundus photographs and fluorescein angiograms. A diverse range of retinal pathology and anterior segment photos will be reviewed and discussed. Participants will have the opportunity to learn what images may be more pertinent to a doctor than others, with emphasis on the technician’s role in obtaining quality images.

2:45 - 3:45 pm 1.0 JCAHPO Group AFitting Contact Lenses: Keratoconus, Post-Surgical and Pediatric MyopiaJane Beeman, FCLSAThe need for specialty contact lenses in diseased and post-surgical patients continues to accelerate. This course will provide tips for successfully fitting patients with mild to severe keratoconus and review post-surgical applications for specialty lenses. Additional discussion will focus on lens design and application in controlling childhood myopia. Participants will learn why some pediatric patients benefit from specialty lenses, which should be fitted and best practices in choosing the right type of lenses for a patient. 3:45 pm Adjourn
