Hi folks, There’s good news and bad news. First the good news. One of our neighboring clubs, the Grin & Square Its, have decided to join our Association. This is not a decision the club, under the strong leadership of Randy and Pat Thorpe, have made lightly. Many emails, conversations, and meetings led to their decision. For those of you that attend the Association’s major functions you will have noted that the Grin & Square Its have frequently supported us. So please help me welcome this club into our Association. Let’s take this one step further, why not show them our welcome by scheduling a visitation to one of their dances. The bad news, WSDA (Western Square Dance Association) the oldest in our area folded due to lack of interest and participation. This brings me to my next two subjects —it’s that time of the year again and it’s that time of the year again. No, you didn’t misread and I didn’t make a mistake. To start, it’s time to think about electing new leadership at the Association level. Vicki and I are termed out. Much as we like to continue, our by-laws do not permit it, that and we don’t want to get into a rut. We’re not just looking for placeholders but folks with new ideas that can build on what we have. Please think about it and submit a nomination form. Just as it is at the club management level, so it is at the Association level, the more hands you have lifting the load, the lighter the load becomes and the better it is for all around you. Vicki just reminded me that I should include something about the upcoming Sweetheart Ball. She’s right, of course! Think about the individual or individuals in your club that have made a difference in the success of your club. The folks that have volunteered one assignment after another. The folks that time and time again have been there to help your club be what it is. Those should be your club Sweethearts. Nominate them, gather some pictures about them, and produce a poster about them that tells their story. Bring that poster to the Sweetheart Ball. Vicki and I always find these posters so very interesting. And before I forget, our Diane Isaacs, has once again come up with a dynamite caller/cuer combination that’s bound to please. That other time of the year is, of course, the Holiday season. We each celebrate this season in our own way and our religious beliefs. That’s what this great country of ours allows us to do. Vicki and I wish you the most wonderful Holidays ever. We’ll see you in the New Year.—Lutz & Vicki

D? When is the next Student Stomp?

The Annual ASquareD Student Stomp will be held on Sunday, January 27, 2019, now at the Simi Valley Senior Center, 3900 Avenida Simi, Simi Valley, CA 93063 from 2–4:30 p.m. The Ventura/Santa Barbara/ San Fernando District will feature all of the callers from our district clubs:  Mike Seastrom, Dick Hodnefield, Rod Shuping, Arlen Miller, and Paul Waters, although Don Schadt will be out of state and unable to attend. The callers will call Mainstream calls that have been coordinated so all students will be able to dance successfully and enjoy themselves. All students are encouraged to attend and practice what they have learned and angels always make our dance special. Thanks to all of our district clubs for providing refreshments and to Valley Trailers for again sponsoring the hall. Hope to see you all there.  Thanks for your continued support. — Linda Kaplan, District Director/Student Stomp Coordinator

Boots and BowsOn September 19th we graduated two students from our fall/winter

2017/2018 class and promoted two students from the 2018 Mainstream class to Plus.  Our two-tiered class resumed September 26th with our recent graduates returning to enjoy their role as angels for both the new beginners Mainstream and Plus workshops.

We will hold our annual holiday dinner-dance on December 15. Please join us in 2019 at the Riviera United Methodist Church at 375 Palos Verdes Blvd. in Redondo Beach for our third Saturday dances.  Rounds with Judy Keller or Jim Smith start at 7:00 p.m. and squares go from 7:30 to 10:00 p.m. David Mee calls our Cookie Jamboree dance on January 19 and Mike Seastrom calls our African Safari 63rd Anniversary dance on February 16. Bring your appetite for our continuous light buffet.Buckles & Bows We hold out beginners’ class every Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Goebel Adult Community (was Senior) Center, just off of the Janss Road exit off of the 23 Freeway in Thousand Oaks.  Mike Seastrom is our caller/instructor, and a favorite of all.  We have some 40 students as of now, including three energetic kids, who are amazing. We have over 100 dancers

at each class, and usually 15 to 18 squares.  We teach Mainstream thru Plus in about 36 weeks, September thru May.      We hold our Plus Level dances on the 4th Saturday of most months, with our Sea Breeze Dance the second Sunday in August.  We are dark in December and may also be dark in March going forward, as that is the new weekend for Bakersfield, something we heavily support, with our students.   Those Saturday dances include guest callers.  We have pre-rounds with Gus and Lynn DeFore starting near 6:30 p.m., and tips from 7:30 to 10 p.m.  Our Star tips at the break are usually A-1, with the exception of HEX in May with Andy Allemao, and Hot Hash in November with Mike Sikorsky.       We will be dark in December, will feature Dee Dee Daugherty on January 26th and will hold our 44th Anniversary Dance on February 23rd with David Mee calling.      We will be hosting several Class Level Fun Dances in the future, and will get the word out for those. Come visit us.  We do have fun.Buttons & Bows

Our upcoming dances:  December 1, Mike Haworth will be calling our Cool Yule dance. January 5,  Darren Gallina will be calling our New Year Celebrations dance, and February 2, Glenn Nichols will be calling our Super Bowl class-level dance. We are a fun club with popular callers and Judy Keller-Smith will cue our rounds.  Come and enjoy our continuous food bar and great halftime refreshments.  Visit us soon. Happy Squares

The Happy Squares end the year of 2018 with their December 8 Jingle Bell Rock club dance, Hunter Keller from Billings, MT, calling. At this dance a non-perishable food collection is taken for a local food pantry.

The club Christmas Party will be held Sunday, Dec. 18 with a progressive dinner/dessert at various host club member’s homes. Last year was such a successful first-time event, it will be held again this year. John Troup, club’s caller coordinator, has given us the caller line-up for 2019. To begin the year, we will feature Gary Shoemake from Seiverville, TN, on January 12, Michael Kellogg on February 9, and Bronc Wise from Mission, TX, on our 50th Anniversary, March 9.  Look for a complete year calendar at our dances.

In addition to Mary Slenker, Klaus Schumiche, and Fred Martino as Class Coordinators for a second year, the club welcomes Paul and Barbara Witman, new dancers and graduates of May 2018, to their first year of the very important position of  class coordinators.  Welcome aboard to them.

The Heels & Souls will merge with the Red Ribbons in January to form a new club, the Ribbons & Souls. When you read this article, we will have had our 59th Anniversary Dance on November 2, and it will have been our last anniversary dance as the Heels & Souls.

On December 7 we will have our Winter Wonderland Dance, a Plus level dance, with Ken Bower and Joe Scarlatella. Every year, Julie Pinckert organized a toy drive in December. Last September, she passed away from cancer. So, on December 7 we will hold our toy drive in memory of Julie. Toys will be donated to the Children’s Orthopaedic Institute. On December 21 we will hold our Home for the Holidays Dance with Steve Woodard and David Moorhouse, and this will be a mainstream dance.

For December, our club dances are at the usual place, Felicia Mahood Senior Center, 11338 Santa Monica Blvd. in West Los Angeles. We are three traffic lights west of the 405 at Corinth St., on the south-west corner, with a large parking lot a couple hundred feet south of us on Corinth at Iowa. We dance on the 1st and 3rd Fridays at 7 p.m. for rounds and 7:30-9:45 p.m. for squares and rounds. To learn more about us, visit our website at www.heelsandsouls.org.

Starting in January, we will hold our Ribbons & Souls dances on Saturdays, at the Felicia Mahood Center. Please see the article for the Ribbons & Souls in this issue. Thank you.—Jan BartholomewLads ‘N’ Lassies

Our “No Limits!” 55th anniversary dance drew a smaller-than-expected crowd on Saturday, Oct. 6. The dance did not have any “local” competition to help explain only having 11 squares of paid dancers. Those who came had a marvelous time and we got many positive comments. Our caller was the incomparable Jet Roberts and Jim Elder cued the rounds. Jet made our anniversary special and he even helped us take our group photo. There were special decorations and our refreshments included a salad bar, chips, fruit, meatballs, cake and more. We are now headed into our 56th year of square dancing!

Our last social event for the year was a theater outing. We went to the Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center to see a performance of the musical, “Guys & Dolls” in November. One guest and 13 members enjoyed the afternoon of music and fellowship.

In December, we welcome the holiday season with our “Reindeer Romp” dance. Jim Elder kicks off the evening with pre-rounds at 7:15 p.m, followed by caller Mike Seastrom at 8 pm. Please join us for a night of good cheer and holiday wishes. Remember, dancing helps burn all of those extra holiday calories!

Our first dance in 2019 is Saturday, Feb. 2. We are celebrating Groundhog Day so come join the fun. Jim Elder starts the evening off with pre-rounds at 7:15 p.m. We square up at 8 pm with Bob Jones doing the calling. Lads ‘N’ Lassies’ dance donation is $8, unless otherwise specified.

Our year-around Plus-level workshop with Rod Shuping had a few weeks of low attendance due to excessive heat and vacations, but we are back on track. This workshop is for dancers who are able to do the Plus calls from the standard positions. It is guaranteed to make the dancers think—and it’s fun. We have open registration so it can be joined at any time. The Monday night workshop is held at Wilkinson Center in Northridge from 7:30–9:30 p.m. Donationfor the workshop is $7/dancer.

All first-Saturday dances and our Monday night Plus-level workshop are held at Wilkinson Center, 8956 Vanalden Ave., Northridge. There’s plenty of parking, good air conditioning and a wood floor. the calls taught the previous week from 7:00–7:30. We are fortunate to have David Mee as our instructor from 7:30–9:30 with John & Sandy Hill teaching line dances between tips. All Ramblin’ Rogues classes, workshops and dances are held at the Norman P. Murray Community Center in Mission Viejo. On December 7, Romney Tannehill will call our “Candy Land” club dance. Pal Carnathan will call a “Boot Scoot’n Boogie” dance on January 4. “Hearts & Flowers” is the theme for our February 1st club dance with Johnny Preston calling. Plus dancing begins at 7:30–10:00 with an advanced tip during the evening and line dancing between tips. Yummy refreshments are always available, as well as a singles rotation board. All plus level dancers are welcome! In 2018 the Rogues participated in many festivals and social events. To top off the year we celebrated the holidays at our “Candy Land” themed dinner dance Christmas Party. We look forward to 2019 with a great lineup of callers, and many more planned activities with our square dance friends. For more information about our club or visitations, please call 714-902-9422 or visit our website at RamblinRogues.org.Ribbons & Souls The Ribbons & Souls will start our new club in January of 2019. We are the former Red Ribbons and Heel & Souls clubs, merged to form a new club. It is a long process to merge our clubs. For example, starting last September our beginners class has been put on by the Ribbons & Souls. On November 2 the Heels & Souls had their last anniversary dance as the Heels & Souls. The Red Ribbons will hold their last anniversary dance as the Red Ribbons on January 12th at Marine Park. The dances for the Ribbons & Souls will be held on the 2nd, 4th

On Sept 9th, 27 Buckles and Bows dancers performed at the Meadowlake Community Center in Oxnard. The Community Potluck Dinner was a great way to give people a taste of square dancing. After dancing two tips, caller Wyane Simpson encouraged the crowd to join in for a brief lesson. We went from 3 to 6

squares as the dining tables emptied. Everyone enjoyed the first lesson so much, all the participants squared up for a second lesson. Several of the couples promised to attend class at the Goebel Center and we were happy to see them at class the following Tuesday. Thanks to all the Buckles and Bows participants: Pat & Jerry Akers, Bill & Nancy Armstrong, Dean & Joanne Cunningham, Mike & Lorraine Newlon, Dean & Cindy Gullekson, Chuck & Joan Kelly Stone, Maxine Springer, Alan Swanson, Doreen Karsai, Scoot Boucher, Brigitte Dickinson, Fred & Suzy Moore, Brad & Donna Baker, Mark Spector, Cathy Smith, Kevin & Juli Hamilton, Ann Duran, and Betsy Fries. The final association dance of the year was a celebration of leadership honoring club presidents as well as A Square D presidents at the 70th An-niversary Dance. Callers for the afternoon were Mike Haworth, left, and Hunter Keller, right, in the photo to the left. There were 27 club presidents, seen above,

on hand to accept our thanks for their dedication and hard work. Over 16 squares of dancers enjoyed the afternoon, support-ed their club presidents and the association, and shared their choice of either vanilla or chocolate anniversary cake.

can support your favorite team at our February 3rd Super Sunday Tailgate Party along with Scot & Erin Byars. We promise great food and lots of fun so you’ll be a winner no matter which team takes home the trophy! Valley Trailers We have started off our new season (September 2018 to March 2019) with a “new” “old” caller.  We had a wonderful approximately six months with Vic Kaaria.  He had taken over for Charlie Robertson who had taken over for Don Schadt.  Vic was always full of vim and vigor even after his driving about two hours to get to us from Redlands during rush hour.  His return time was a little shorter (starting about 10:00 pm ) by about ½ hour.  We will all miss him.  But, we are now fortunate to have our “old” caller back, Don Schadt.  It’s like a family reunion.  Welcome back, Don.

The Halloween Hoot dance will be on Saturday, October 20.  Come in your most outrageous Halloween costume and you may win the prize for the best costume.  November 17 is the Valley Trailers’ 64th anniversary dance.  It will be a Plus level dance.  Our callers are Mike Seastrom and Dee Dee Dougherty.  Rounds will have Cindy Mower as the cuer. Our annual Holiday Hop will be on Sunday, December 9.  We will have a DJ and great food.  The music will be for ballroom, including swing, dancing.  No square dancing.  Our third Saturday of the month square dance for December will be on the 15th.  Dan Preddy will be our caller.

Finally, the are again happy to be the hall sponsor for the annual ASqD Student Stomp hosted by our district. The Student Stomp, open to all new students, dancers, and clubs will be Mainstream level with calls that have been taught by all the teachers in the in the Valley-Ventura-Santa Barbara clubs. Place: Simi Valley Senior Center, 3900 Avenida Simi, Simi Valley, CA 93063 from 2:00–4:30 p.m., January 27th.

We’d love to see everyone at our dances; thanks for your support.Western Weavers

The Western Weavers celebrated its 37th anniversary in October with plenty of food, fun, and dancing to the great Mike Hogan. One of the club’s charter members, Thea Winner, was in attendance and was recognized before the dance started. And she still serves on the board!

Besides some outstanding cueing work on the rounds from Joe Scarlatella, Hogan kept the dancers on their toes, especially when he called a Sicilian Circle and later treated those in attendance to some yodeling. There was more than enough food to go around, and we can’t wait to see you, and Mike Hogan again, next October for our 38th Anniversary.

We started our beginner classes Sept. 11 with 19 students and six

squares of angels and students. Our instructor is Dale Hoppers and we start with line dancing at 6:30 p.m., squares at 7:30 p.m. Classes are held on Tuesdays at Magnolia Park Methodist Church.

The annual Western Weavers Potluck Picnic was well-attended, as usual, at Kit Wren’s house in August, despite the high temperatures and humidity to match. Not many games were played, but plenty of food and Kit’s pool were enjoyed by the 35 or so who did attend.

High Flyers National Convention in Kansas City 2018by Pamela Bailis, Senior Director

Kansas City, the heart of America and the “city of fountains” was amazing. We flew in on Saturday June 23, and flew out on Sunday, June 30. Three and a half days of touring, three and a half days of dancing! What more could we ask for? Fabulous trip!Did you know that:• Walt Disney opened his first animation studio in KC (Laugh-O-Gram Studio) where he fed a small rodent that became the inspiration for Mickey Mouse?• KC ignored Prohibition during the 1920’s, leading to an abundance of jazz clubs, brothels, and gambling halls, earning KC the moniker “The Paris of the Plains”?• Missouri is also known as the “Cave State”? It boasts to have more than 6,400 caves (ranging in size from small sinkholes to magnificent caverns). Meramec Caverns was where Jesse James stashed his loot from a train robbery.• Each March, KC hosts more college basketball games than anywhere in the country?• At least four different US presidents have dined at the original Arthur Bryant’s Barbeque (and so did we High Flyers)!• The KC area boasts more than 100 barbecue restaurants? If you love barbeque, KC is the place to go!Here are some of the High Flyer tours highlights:• KC StreetCar and Civil Rights Tour. We learned about Social Justice, Black History, and Civil Rights (struggles, accomplishments, achievements) from an African American perspective. This was an amazing tour led by Eric Stafford, born and raised in KC.• Barbeque & Jazz! We visited the 18th & Vine Jazz District. Ate delicious barbeque at Arthur Bryant’s Barbeque and heard great jazz at the Blue Room; see below right.• President Harry S. Truman’s Library and Presidential Museum was also fantastic. Wow, what one president can do! See photo below left.• Tours of the Liberty War Memorial, the Arabia Steamboat Museum, and Union Station left us all in awe with our mouths wide open!• Some of us ventured off to the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art while others visited the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection, outside of KC, up on a hillside, with an amazing stained-glass window... the largest in the world!

• Riding the free KC StreetCar up and down Mainstreet was a joy and so very cool! Our hotels were AC cool as were the Convention halls. However, outdoors was like a sauna or steam-bath. So very hot and humid. But we survived.—Pam
