En una reciente catequesis sobre la oración y el Adviento, el Papa Francisco dijo: “aprender a rezar bien es un proceso constante que ha de comenzar desde la humildad, como bien demuestra Jesús en los evangelios.” ¡Por muchos años que llevemos orando, siempre podemos aprender más! La oración del cristiano, ese anhelo que nace de manera natural en el alma, es, tal vez, uno de los misterios más profundos del universo. Mencionaba el Papa que el primer paso para rezar es ser humildes. “Acudid al Padre, invocad a la Virgen, decid: soy un pecador, un deudor, desobediente…parte con esa humildad.” Es una actitud distinta a la oración hecha por el fariseo, anécdota de Jesús en la parábola del fariseo y el publicano, según narra San Lucas. El fariseo reza con orgullo, ensalzándose ante Dios “por no ser como los demás hombres.” Por otra parte, el publicano, “no se atrevía ni a alzar los ojos al cielo, y se golpeaba el pecho diciendo: Oh Dios, ten compasión de mí, que soy pecador.” Según Jesús, solo el publicano baja del templo a su casa justificado. El Papa nos recuerda que Jesús fue un hombre de oración, ‘a pesar de la urgencia de su misión y de las exigencias de tanta gente que lo reclamaba, sintió la necesidad de apartarse en soledad y rezar.’ Rezaba Cristo con intensidad en momentos públicos, compartiendo la liturgia con su pueblo, también buscaba lugares recogidos, separados del ruido del mundo, lugares que permitieran descender al secreto de su alma. De esta forma nos conduce a una íntima relación con su Padre y junto a sus discípulos exclamemos: “Señor, enséñanos a orar.”

During a recent Advent catechesis on the

importance of prayer Pope Francis said: “learning to pray well is a continual process, but should always start from a place of humility, as Jesus demonstrates in the Gospels.” Even if we have been praying for so many years, we must always learn! The prayer of a believer, the yearning that is born so naturally from his soul, is perhaps one of the most impenetrable mysteries of the universe. The Pope mentioned that the first step is humility. “Go to the Father, go to our Lady, say: look at me, I am a sinner, I am a debtor, I am disobedient… But begin with humility!” This is in contrast to the prayer of the Pharisee, as told by Jesus in the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector in the Gospel of Luke. The Pharisee prayed from a place of pride, thanking God that he was “not like the rest of humanity.” On the other hand, the tax collector, “would not even raise his eyes to heaven but beat his breast and prayed, O God, be merciful to me a sinner.” According to Jesus, only the latter, the tax collector, returns home from the temple justified. The Pope reminds us that ‘Jesus himself was a man of prayer, despite the urgency of his earthly mission and the demands on him by many people around him, Jesus would still take the time to pray.’ Jesus prayed intensely in public moments, sharing the liturgy of his people, but he also sought collected places, separate from the spin of the world, places that allowed him to descend into the secret of his soul. Thus, he introduces us to this relationship with the heavenly Father urging us to repeat the invocation of his disciples: “Teacher, teach us to pray.”

LAS POSADAS: A CHRISTMAS TRADITION

A holy history lesson: The roots of Las Posadas stretch deeply into Latin culture. It originated in Spain, but it’s been a yearly celebration throughout Mexico for over 400 years. The tradition commemorates Mary and Joseph’s difficult journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem in search of a warm place to stay the night. (Posadas is Spanish for “lodgings” or “accommodations.”) Beginning on December 16 and ending nine days later, on December 24, Las Posadas commemorates the nine months of Mary’s pregnancy. Each night, one family agrees to house the pilgrims. And so it begins: At dusk, a procession of the faithful takes to the streets with children often dressed as angels and shepherds. Religious figures, images and lighted candles are a part of the festivities. The group representing the Holy Family stands outside a series of houses, singing songs, asking for lodging. They are refused time and again until the group reaches the designated house. Finally, the travelers are permitted to enter. Prayer and song continue in the home, and festive foods are shared. The evening ends with a piñata in the shape of star. The tradition continues each evening with a different house as the chosen Posadas. The last night—Christmas Eve—usually features a midnight Mass. The nine days of Las Posadas is more than just a feel-good tradition: It deepens faith and strengthens ties within the community at a holy time. Just as Mary and Joseph faced the cold weather—and even colder innkeepers that night—participants brave the elements in bringing their love for the Christ Child to their streets. Las Posadas isn’t about being somber and still during Christmas: It’s about pilgrims and a pilgrimage, rousing song, prayer and deep faith—all of it in motion.
