We would like to introduce our readers

to a fellow member of the LGBT community, the owner of Raphael’s Terraza, Mr. Rafael (Rapha) Fallas Zúñiga. Rapha is a native to the Quepos, Manuel Antonio region. He was born in the original Quepos hospital and was also raised here.

His first job was as a waiter, at Vela Bar in 1994. It was here that he started to meet members of the community and he began to dream of some day opening his own restaurant. He worked at Si Como No, from 1998-2000, and later worked at Restaurant Marlin from 2001-2009.

Rapha opened his Terraza Restaurant in its current location in 2010, with space exclusively for the LGBT community on the lower floor. The restaurant is proud to offer some of the fines seafood, specializing in Costa Rican cuisine. Raphael’s Terraza is open daily from 11am - 10:30pm. For dinner reservations call 2777-6310.

Later Rapha opened the Bar Mogambo as a LGBT place on the second floor

above the restaurant. They was closed at the end of last season for renovations and is being reopened this season as Rapha’s Mogambo.

This bar has a great open air design, with seating above and overlooking Manuel Antonio Beach. New to Rapha’s Mogambo this year is a indoor dance floor/disco/

stage with air conditioning and 3 flat screen TV’s . As well is an outdoor bar with a smoking area. The bar is open Thursday thru Monday from 5pm until 2am.

Rapha’s Mogambo has one of the best locations to enjoy a beautiful sunset, with 2 for 1 drinks every day from 5-7pm. Join Rapha’s for Live Music on Thursday, Dancing with a DJ on Fri, Sat and Sun. Jump on stage Mondays for a night of KARAOKE. All evening entertainment begins at 9pm.

Follow Bar Mogambo on Facebook and enjoy the night life of the LGBT community in Manuel Antonio Beach.

PLAYITA • Year XII • No. 45 December 2014 - January 2015 13

Our community, like many others, has undergone a many changes over the last few years. Like everywhere

else, establishments change and vary, close and open. For most of us, it is important to patronize establishments which offer a friendly environment to all patrons regardless of their sexual bent, and others which cater to a gay-lesbian clientele but are also “straight-friendly”.

So…you’ve spent a super day at the beach, zip lining or horseback riding. Now… where do you go for evening entertainment or for good meal while you´re visiting Manuel Antonio?

We are fortunate to have two gay bars in town. Karma has been around for a couple of seasons and it’s a nice spot for an evening of socializing, lounging and relaxing. It’s located in the Cockatoo Building below Victoria’s Restaurant. Also in Manuel Antonio, a bit closer to the beach is Raphael’s Mogambo. This bar has just been renovated and relicensed to allow for later night dancing and socializing. They’ve also included a night of live music and Monday is Karaoke night. Raphael’s Mogambo is on the second floor above Raphael’s Terrazas Restaurant.

Sunday Sunset is a tradition here that spans almost a decade now. Between 4:00 and 8:00 pm the clan gathers at Salsipuedes Tapas

Bar in Manuel Antonio socialize and share a spectacular ‘Puesta de Sol’. It’s a nice way to wind down from the weekend and enjoy the beauty.

When looking for a watering hole in Quepos, drop into Blue. This bar-restaurant is newer on the list and was the location for our Halloween party. This gay-friendly spot is located on the second floor of Plaza Garza, between the Banco Nacional and the ocean.

We are also fortunate to have a plethora of restaurants catering to our culinary tastes. Here in Manuel Antonio, we have Emilio´s Restaurant, Salsipuedes, Mar Luna, and Rafael´s Terrazas, all of which have spectacular views of the Pacific and offer a pleasant dining experience without breaking the budget. Closer to Quepos you will find “Z” in Plaza Yara. Z provides a newer dining experience of “shared meal platers” on the menu as well as smaller plates for a romantic dinner. In Quepos wood fired pizza and Italian food is available in Escalofrio, right downtown and Kukula, known for its seafood dishes in Boca Vieja.

One local spot that is a bit out of the way, but can provide a very “Tico” experience is Club Banana in Quepos. It’s been around for decades and offers a variety of Costa Rican dishes. Not fancy, but good local food and a warm welcome from Clara and her family.

That’s the way to do it guys! K.I.S.S. Keep it simple and smooth. Learning Spanish (or any other language) is not

that impossible if you know how to do it, and I am here to help you with that.

First of all, let me introduce myself and this new column:

My name is Osvaldo (Os), I am from Costa Rica and I have been teaching Spanish to for-eigners for a long time. I named this column like this because I will help you to keep learn-ing Spanish happy and snappy and hopefully these articles will give you ideas and tips of how to learn español the EASY way.

And the first and most important advice on learning Spanish is… (Drum roll please):

MASTER THE VOWELS. They are ONLY five!!!!! We’ll call them “The BIG 5”.

By Todd Pequeen

I’ve been mute in New York City. Only for two days though. I was visiting in order to run a marathon and fortunately I was with a friend

who was able to communicate, but I still felt strange, different. It was something I could do nothing about you see, for I had lost my voice due to a throat illness. I could not talk, I could not eat, and I was barely able to drink fluids. In a very short time I went from being an ex-pat massage/surf guy living in a Costa Rican rain forest, to a speechless Brooklyn bound tourist. How surreal. Without the help of my friend I would have been in a serious predicament. Almost over night I had become something I had always feared. A man unable to be himself.

Life’s lessons are served up to us when THEY are ready, not always when WE are ready. While pointing to my throat during check-in at the airport, during jostling at the crowded urinal lines during the race, as well as on the subway and streets, I began to cope with my issue. Most of my encounters were met with pleasantry’s. My lowered eyes, slouching shoulders, and sad half-smile said everything I needed to say. My engagements were comforting and pleasant, I don’t know why I was thinking things would be different. It was my own self-consciousness and a newly realized state of mind that I had become unsure of. Now I was seeing that my preconceptions were of my own doing. I had nothing to be afraid of and if I was, it was my fault.

If I could have just been more myself as the mute I had become surely some people may have helped me even more. I didn’t need to feel bad about not talking. I just needed to be who I was. Everything would have been easier. The symptoms of my illness and the situation it put

me in made me not accept myself. Something I had always done, literally, for 43 years. I have always had the attitude like the character Popeye, “I yam what I yam.” In a very small way I re-learned a lesson that I thought I had down. No matter who you are, or why you are the way you are, continue to trust in it, and empower yourself. None of us should feel mute, ever. I am so thankful for my speechless time in New York City, I heard volumes those days and life is sweeter because of it.
