It‘s time to celebrate the 21st anniversary of the Budwesier Illinois Blues Festival. Great Blues entertainment and, this year, three entertainment stages. Considered one of the top blues festivals, the 21st annual Budweiser Blues Festival features two days of internationally known Blues artists and is produced by Jay Goldberg Events & Entertainment, www.jaytv.com, with proceeds going to the Illinois Blues Coalition.

The Illinois Blues Coalition supports Blues Societies, Blues Music Entertainers and Blues Music Education by offering grants and scholarships to help fund projects which preserve and promote the history and future of blues music. The objective of the Illinois Blues Coalition is to promote the art form of blues-related music by performance, by interpretation, by preservation and by enhancement of appreciation through knowledge and education.

A popular addition to our festival is the “Blues Lessons” featuring musician workshops and history of the blues educational seminars. Peoria has a long tradition and has always been a major influence in blues music. It began with the days when the blues masters would travel from Chicago, sown the Illinois River to St. Louis, and then on to New Orleans. Peoria was, and still is, the place to stop! Even the blues men and women knew the famous cliché, “Will It Play In Peoria?”

Advance tickets are just $15 per day or SAVE BIG! Get a 2-Day advanced priced ticket for just $25! Children under 12 are FREE when accompanied by a paying adult.

This event is produced by Jay Goldberg Events & Entertainment in conjunction with the Illinois Blues Coalition. For more information, please visit, http://www.illinoisbluesfestival.com/.

Features Include:• Three Entertainment Stages• Musician Workshops• Blues Alley • Blues Foods• And More!

Loose Shoes is a variety band from Pekin, Illinois. It has approximately sixteen full and part-time members that specialize in live music entertainment for community events and private social functions. The band started as the brain child of Dr. Eric Reinertson, a local Obstetrician/Gynecolo-

gist. Originally, a smaller group of musicians were assembled to “jam” once a month or so, with some classic rock tunes and eventually play for the office Christmas party. Over the course of a couple of years, several musicians joined the band from various connections. Some have come and gone and the mix now includes about two more of everything; singers, keyboards, trumpets, guitars, saxophones, trombones, etc. Three of the members are local physicians, which occasionally gives rise to the name “the Doctors’ band”. This band has a strong rhythm section that is accented by a full brass combo and several exceptional vocalists. Classic rock covers and songs from the 1940’s to current hits are the predominant presentation material.

STRINGSDr. Eric ReinertsonDr. Reinertson looks back to high school, remember being asked if he wanted to play in a band. He thought that was a strange request since he wasn’t a member of neither choir nor band and has never played an instrument. He ended up agreeing anyway, bought a bass guitar and amp and memorized about 50 songs that were taught to him. Over the course of the last 25 years, Dr. Reinertson has been in many different bands. Until Loose Shoes, bass has been his primary instrument. He received a 1960 reissue Gibson Les Paul as a Christmas gift from his family and took a year’s worth of lessons. His focus is now on lead and rhythm guitar for the majority of songs and bass on a few others. “It is both challenging and rewarding for me to play and to organize this band. None of the previous bands have had as much diversity as this one and I truly enjoy this time away from life’s troubles. Every day is better when the music is playing.”Dr. Eric Reinertson is a Board Certified Obstetrician/Gynecologist in Pekin, Illinois at the Women’s Center for Health. He was born in California, raised in North Dakota and then went to Nursing School in Wyoming, where he met his beautiful wife, Betty.

Scott MungeScott, also known as “Scooter”, began playing in front of the public during his senior year of high school and hasn’t been able to be dragged off stage since. He has done solo acoustic, duets and various bands over the years. “Music has always been a release for me and has always been a big part of my life. It is the free flowing creative balance to my logical side,” Scott says of his passion for music. Scott says that being a part of Loose Shoes is unlike anything he has ever done before: “The variety of music is refreshing and the band is truly a family. We can lay down some serious music and have fun while doing it. With such a unique variety of people and personalities, average is never an option both on and off stage. Without a doubt, this is the most fun I’ve ever had playing music.”

Bunny BalabanMusic has always been a major part of Bunny’s life. Playing nearly a dozen instruments has allowed her the opportunity to play with bands, orchestras, jazz bands, quartets, and chamber ensembles. Bunny is a cello and violin teacher at the Pekin School District and keyboardist, occasional guitarist and vocalist for On Higher Ground (a contemporary worship band at Our Savior Lutheran Church). As a Massage Therapist,

Page 15: Playing In Peoria, Fall 2009

she is continually looking for music that will promote healing and relaxation. Bunny adds that her music skills have been continually challenged since joining Loose Shoes in 2002. “The growth in the group, both in numbers and musically, has been phenomenal. Even though everyone in the group holds down a “day” job, everyone works hard to make the group and each other better.

Brian BenassiBrian enjoys being in band with so many talented people. He loves to sing and hopes the band will be around for a long time. He really likes their horn section and how it sets them apart from other area bands.

Randy Kohtz Randy started playing bass guitar when he was 13 years old and was immediately hooked. He has been in many rock bands since that time. Loose Shoes gives him an opportunity to work with others who enjoy music and to play a variety of songs that reach many different people. For the past 26 years, he has been a letter carrier for the Peking Post Office.

VOCALSDr. Adrian CordobaMusic has always been a big part of Dr. Cordoba’s life. He started playing trombone at age 9 and has played in a number of bands during both high school and college. As lead vocalist and trombonist, he is very excited about the bands future endeavors and has really enjoyed playing with them. Also vocal, Brian Benassi, Randy Kohtz, and Bunny Balaban

KEYBOARDSBill Bond, MD Loose Shoes is Bill’s first band since being in high school, not counting playing the piano in hotels, lounges and bars, while attending Medical School for extra money. He has had a lot of fun playing with the band. “I have a long way to go being a synth player instead of a piano player, so I need to learn more than I can learn quickly at my stage of life. Bill is an Eye Surgeon at Bond Eye Associates.

HORNSMary YoungMary has been playing clarinet since she was 10 and saxophone since she was 18. Music is her way of relaxing and having fun. She loves being in Loose Shoes: “Everyone is very nice and super fun and its fun being in a “cool” band”. Mary is a Medical Technologist at Graham Hospital located in Canton. She plays her clarinet and saxophone in the orchestra at Pekin 1st Church of the Nazarene and has been known to show her face in the choir from time to time.

Justin RileyJustin began playing music, with the trumpet, at age nine as well as playing in school bands, symphonic wind ensembles, church orchestras, brass quintets, marching bands, pep bands, and various jazz bands, continuing into college. “I am very much enjoying playing in Loose Shoes as all of our selections are from those two categories. And, after being away from playing for a few years, I had certainly forgotten how much fun it could be to play in a band. I am very thankful to this group for the opportunity to play and have fun again.”Also on horns, Greg Locke, “the Kid”, and Adiran.

CONTEMPORARY ART CENTER OF PEORIA

Rooster Alley at Live at the Five SpotFrIDAy, AuGuSt 14 • 5:30 – 7:30 pm • Admission: $10/nonmembers, $7/members.Rooster Alley is a rockin’ blues band from Peoria area made up of seasoned musicians who know how to entertain. After playing together for several years, Dennis Bosley (Vocals/Guitar/Harp) and Danny Meyers (Bass) united with Elliot Parker (Drums), and Dave “The Steep” Hill (Guitar) to create their own recipe of foot stompin’, party-time blues. They dish up a Delta-grown blues, Chicago-cooked served Texas BBQ style. The band members adopted the name Rooster Alley because of its “Blusey” feel. Rooster Alley’s house rockin’ blues come straight from their soul and together they produce an original assortment of entertaining blues music.

The Bogside Zukes at Live at the Five SpotFrIDAy, AuGuSt 21 • 5:30 – 7:30 pm • Admission: $10/nonmembers, $7/members.Besides being talented, energetic and quite often in tune, members of this eclectic, Irish-trad-folk-pub band play a variety of traditional Irish, bluegrass and old-time. The Bogside Zukes call upon a variety of instruments to fill a room with sound, including mandolin, fiddle, guitar, bass and rousing vocals. Audience involvement is always on tap when the Zukes unleash their high-energy interpretations of Irish and Celtic ballads, reels, hornpipes and jigs. And the tunes are accomplished by great good humor, including an expanding repertoire of jokes not quite from around here.

The Bogside Zukes perform regularly at pubs, festivals and private parties throughout Central Illinois. “It’s amazing to witness the way that the music grabs the audience,” says BZ guitarist Matt Coker. “From ages 7 to 70, people are drawn to this sound.” Besides Coker, the Zukes are Tom Abbot on mandolin, guitar and accordion; John Parker on fiddle and Bob Thiemann on bass. “We always have a lot of fun,” says Coker, “and we try to make sure that our audiences pick up on that and have fun as well.” For more info on the band, please visit www.bogsidezukes.com.

Every disc golfer has their own coined throwing style, but all of them either throw sidearm or backhand; so which is better?

The answer is – They are both equally effective, it just depends the player and the shot; and what he or she feels most comfortable with. The nature of the game is to relax and have a good time, so throw how you normally throw. The best shots are one’s that take the least amount of effort… physically and mentally!

When throwing backhand, you need to determine what disc works best for you. Generally, sidearm throws generates more snap than a backhand throw, so if you throw sidearm use an over-stable disc. The best situation to be in is to be able to throw using both techniques, because every hole is different, and every shot counts!

Backhand throws — Results in the player’s throwing arm moving across the opposite side of the body before release. A backhand throw is a standard throw where the player has the disc across their chest to their opposite shoulder and then releases the disc back to the other side of their body. This is the most common type of throw.

Sidearm throws — Results in the player’s throwing arm moving across the same side of the body before release. A forehand throw is a standard throw where the player has the disc across their chest to their opposite shoulder and then releases the disc back to the other side of their body.

Next time you have some extra time on your hands, go to the park and test out both throwing styles. See which one goes further, and then you can determine which shot to use off the tee box!

UNNECESSARY FARCE by Paul Slade SmithJuly 23 - September 13The setting of this hilarious new play is two adjoining rooms in an economy motel where two inexperienced police officers have been sent to videotape a meeting between the local Mayor and the town’s accountant, with the aim of uncovering an embezzlement scheme. Things begin to unravel when the Mayor runs into one of the officers in the lobby, and we discover that the other officer is having an affair with the accountant! The Mayor’s nervous security guard reveals that the embezzled money is a plot by the Scottish Mafia and that “the Highland Hit Man” is on the way! Meanwhile, the Mayor’s wife has arrived. Is she merely concerned for her husband, or could she somehow be involved in the criminal plot? The twists and turns will keep you laughing until the final moments!

RUMORS by Neil SimonSeptember 17 - November 8An up-scale anniversary party turns into a mad melee of innuendos and misunderstandings as four couples arrive at the celebration set for an evening of fun only to discover the hostess missing and the host upstairs suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Get set for a wild roller coast ride of hilarity as the couples get more and more crazed trying to sort everything out! Neil Simon’s play has been hailed as an “old-fashioned, door-slamming, crockery-smashing farce” where infidelity, scandal and mystery all provide grist for this mill of humor and rumor.

In the early 1800’s, as the population of the eastern states increased, available land for homesteading sites became hard to find. Those who sought to avoid the crowd set out to conquer the prairies of the West. In the new state of Illinois they sought a new life.

Woodford County was organized in 1841 by a committee of pioneers headed by Thomas Bullock ,who came to the Walnut Grove community (now Eureka) in 1835 from his birthplace in Versailles, Woodford County, Kentucky. Eureka was incorporated by an act of the Illinois Legislature on February 23, 1859 and was designated as the Woodford County seat in 1894. Walnut Grove was a community extending about five miles north and south along Walnut Creek and a mile or so east -and west of the creek. Some sixty families settled in this area between 1828 and 1855. There was no local government. There was no store before 1852, and there were only 2 institutions before 1855. The first was the Christian Church, organized in 1832. The second was Walnut Grove Academy, which opened in 1848. The academy over time became the center of local interest and a membership on its board was a mark of both power and leadership. Around 1850 the beginnings of a town began to sprout along what is now Cemetery Street, near the church and the academy. This development soon lapsed around the same time as the arrival of John Darst. Originally from Dayton, Ohio, Darst arrived at Walnut Grove in 1851 at the age of 35. He bought land, and when conditions were favorable in 1855 he platted the original town of Eureka. On January 1, 1856 he sold lots around what is now the courthouse square. Eureka’s population since 1860 has continued to flourish throughout the years, growing from 604 people in 1860, to 1,661 people in 1900, and to 4,871 people in the year 2000.

Playing In EurekaThe Ronald Reagan Peace Garden

In a May 9, 1982 speech at Eureka College, President Reagan challenged the Soviet Union to a new era of negotiations to reduce nuclear arms -- called START. The speech has been labeled “The Beginning of the End of the Cold War.”

To commemorate President Reagan’s commitment to world peace and the important 1982 speech he presented at Eureka, the College dedicated the Ronald Reagan Peace Garden in May of 2000. The Peace Garden was a gift to the College from Mr. and Mrs. David J. Vaughan of Peoria Heights, Illinois.

Dedicated on the 18th anniversary of what is known as “The Eureka Speech,” highlights of the Peace Garden include a bust of Mr. Reagan, sculpted by nationally-recognized artist, Lonnie Stewart. In designing the bust, Mr. Stewart commented, “There are many different images of Ronald Reagan but I think the one that’s most dear to the hearts of all the millions of Americans who loved him, is that Ronald Reagan smile. A smile of reassurance, of dignity and integrity, and one that we all know and love.”

The Peace Garden also includes a large remnant of the Berlin Wall. It is only fitting that a piece of the symbolic barrier between East and West that Mr. Reagan helped bring down has found a place at Eureka. -Courtesy of Eureka College
