DIRECTOR’S NOTES

When I learned that my first show as OLP’s Theatre Director was going to be Mary Poppins, I was filled with joy from the rush of happy memories. As a child, I watched the 1964 Disney film over and over again. Throughout my life, I have often leaned on the idea of turning work into a game. While the musical is different than the film or the original 1934 novel by P. L. Travers, the spirit remains the same.

This is a story of a family coming together, overcoming their flaws, and bonding through challenges. Mary herself is a being of magic, brought by the wind where she is needed most. While she loves the family and appreciates her time with them, she knows she will eventually have to leave. There are few certainties in life, but change is one of them. Mary teaches us many lessons, but this is one of her most important.

The magic of Mary cannot be boiled down to a single label. She is a fascinating character, and I hope that our production brings a spoonful of sugar to your day.
