Survivor Betting
Survivor betting, Last Man Standing, Eliminator – whatever you choose to call it, there is surely no doubt that this form of betting creates the best atmosphere and banter between peers. I mean, surely the only thing better than beating the bookie is taking money off a friend (or colleague) who thinks they know more than you. AND you get to brag about it too. The trick is making sure you win…….
NFL Survivor Pools
For NFL survivor pools, you need to pick one team each week. If they win, you move on to the next week, where once again you will need to select a team. If the team happens to lose, you are eliminated. The last player remaining is deemed the winner and collects the prize money. Sounds simple doesn’t it?
Well… here’s the curveball. You can only choose each team once. So, how do you win? Well, there’s no set formula – it’s a mix of skill and luck. Here a few tips to help you on your quest for glory…..
Ignore pre-season form
Pre-season has never EVER been a cursor for good form going into the regular season. Even the Texans win in pre-season!
Ignore the Spread.
Look at the match-ups straight-up and try and avoid checking the lines for the week. It is very easy to evaluate a line far too literally and thus assume that the spread between two sides reflects the difference in ability. This is not always the case; point spreads can often reflect public perception and are dictated by the action a bookie sees on a particular match. Stats have shown that more often than teams who win their game also cover their point spread. Remember that.
Look for upsets
Picking a team with the highest spread can work out on certain weeks, but will rarely carry you to the finishing line. Every week, a couple of games stand out, and I think it is wise to avoid those contests that appear to be the most popular. As we all know, upsets happen. Be careful!
Don’t plan long term
Don’t try and squirrel away your ‘good picks’ for a future week. Injuries can destroy this strategy very quickly. Would you have backed the Colts without Manning?
Check the schedule
Sounds obvious I know, but this can involve a small amount of research and thus could give you the edge. Remember a few simple rules: Short weeks often affect teams negatively, long distances are not good and beware choosing sides on the wrong end of consecutive road games
Rivalries trump statistics
Respect the squads, respect the recent history but trust and believe that the extra spice surrounding a rivalry can truly upset the odds.
By know means is this foolproof, but it could give you the edge come the business end of the pool. Good luck people.
Richard.
