THE EARLY CHILDHOOD COMPANY™

Chuga, Chuga, Toot, Toot

Activity: Children use movement and a whistle to explore a steady beat.Show and discuss a picture of a steam-engine

train. Teach children “The Train Song.” Play

the Whistle for each “toot toot”. Let children

pretend to be a train pulled by a steam engine.

Have them plan and draw a route around the

play area and create signs for a station,

mountain, lake, railroad crossing, and so on.

Talk about train whistle patterns. Explain that

two long whistles means a train will go forward,

and three short whistles means it will go in

reverse. Invite children to write their own

whistle patterns, using musical notation, such

as eighth notes for short whistles and quarter

notes or half notes for long ones.

Have children choose a “whistle blower,”

“train engine,” “cars,” and “caboose,” and

take their places. Explain that as they sing the

song, the “train” moves to its steady beat

along the track and the whistle blower plays

each “toot toot”. Children may use other

instruments, such as the Music Makers Bells &

Scraper to play “clickity-clack” or the Music

Makers Drums to play “chuga-chuga.”

Have children take turns reading and playing

whistle patterns. Ask a volunteer to begin

playing a whistle pattern, repeating it, keeping a

steady beat as children move around the play

area in unison, taking long and short steps to

match the whistle pattern. Repeat with other

patterns.

Ask children how the beat of the song and the

speed of the “train” might change as it climbs

a steep mountain, travels downhill, pulls into a

station, and so on. Have them demonstrate.

Challenge a “whistle blower” to increase the

speed of the beat until an imaginary train is

moving at top speed and then gradually decrease

it as they imagine it gets to the station.

Explain that a steady beat in music is

a regular pulse. It stays the same. Play Train Tag in which tagged players hang

on to the waist of three or four taggers,

forming long chains to chase players. Ask children to follow the “tracks” with

a buddy to help them navigate. 3

Well maintained playground equipment can help children to develop cognitively, physically, communicatively, socially, andemotionally in a safer environment. Along with helping to promote children’s development, a quality maintenanceprogram has many positive outcomes.

Protect your investment: Play equipment, protective surfacing, planning, and site development of a playgroundare significant investments. It simply makes good economic sense to maintain the equipment to extend its lifeand protect your school or agency’s investment.

Manage risk: Proper, routine, and timely maintenance is a way of managingrisks in the community’s play areas, helping to protect them from costlyaccidents, and demonstrating the community’s standard of care.

Improve children’s play experiences: When playground equipment isbroken or otherwise unusable, children miss opportunities for play. Thatmoment of connection with others and fun filled learning might be lost. The better maintained the equipment, the better the chance that a child’slife is improved. Your work could make the difference!

Promote community values: Maintained and groomed play environments are a source of pride for thecommunity. Taking good care of the playground equipment and maintaining a beautiful environment is anexpression of your community’s values.

Control expenses: Timely, preventive routine maintenance procedures help control expenses by reducing upkeepand replacement costs, enabling more accurate budgeting.

It has been estimated that at

least 33% of playground

accidents could be avoided

program (National Playground

Safety Institute).

Learning Outcomes:• Define the importance of maintenance as a key to

maximizing playground value and managing risk• Generate high and low frequency inspection

protocols and procedures for a sustainablemaintenance program

• Identify potentially hazardous conditions in theplay environment and define proper maintenancepractices for playground equipment and surfacing

The importance of a qualified and caring playground supervisor frequently goes unnoticed by everyone except children. You need to be a compassionate adult, often lending a friendly ear, as well as an administrator, enforcing the rules. Theprimary job of a playground supervisor is to be concerned about the safety and welfare of the children that are in your care. How you choose to do your job may impact not only their safety but the value of their play. Through play, children growand develop valuable skills that will carry them into the adult world. The work of a playground supervisor is to enhanceplay opportunities and restrict behaviors that prevent children from productive, safer play experiences. Along withparticipating in this seminar, supervisors should familiarize themselves with their school or agency’s playground relatedpolicies, be trained in first aid, and participate in ongoing learning about best practices for playground supervision.

The Value of PlayIn order to enhance the value of play, you must know how to positivelysupport play in safer and more meaningful ways. Play has innate value for allchildren. As a playground supervisor, how you approach the supervision ofthe playground may impact children’s physical safety and the opportunitiesthey may have to develop physically, cognitively, communicatively, emotionally, and socially. What child doesn't love building a Fort or Clubhouse?

If we could tap into a child's vision of what this fort might look like, we might see wooden planks forming simple walls, clusters of branches shaping makeshift roofs, or cardboard boxes molding a secure door to keep out imaginary villains. The nostalgic tree fort themed play structure was influenced by exactly this type of childhood spirit, employing many of the same design elements that a child might use themselves.

SM DM TM Curvy Canopy Roof

Play & Park Structures has created the most versatile roof on the market. The FunVisor roof can be stacked for maximum shade or combined to shade large deck configurations. No other roof on the market can shade as many deck configurations!

The Importance of Shade

Adding shade to your playground helps protect children from the sun as well as improving the aesthetic appeal of the playground structure. Our roofs are also designed to inhibit climbing onto the top.
