The Neighborhood Arts Initiative is an innovative arts program that fosters community interaction.

The project emphasizes the City of Roanoke’s Arts & Cultural Plan goal to bring performing and visual arts directly to neighborhoods. The Plan outlines the development of livable communities and engaged neighborhoods not only as a method of building community, rejuvenating parks and strengthening identity but also as a way to bring together diverse audiences for its arts and cultural organizations and to employ individual artists.

Working with the Office of Neighborhood Services and the Roanoke Neighborhood Advocates, parks in each of the city’s four quadrants have been identified for programming based on need, accessibility and proximity to adjacent neighborhoods.

A major goal of City of Roanoke’s Arts and Cultural Plan is to increase livability by building Livable Communities and Engaged Neighborhoods. This will be achieved through this project by integrating arts and cultural activities in neighborhood-level planning so that Roanoke’s cultural heritage and contemporary assets are included in events, physical design and revitalization strategies of neighborhoods in a way that highlights local talent city wide.

I hope to see you there. Check page 16 for dates, times and locations.

Swim LessonsRoanoke Parks and Recreation will offer swim lessons to participants, ages 6 months through adults, at both Washington and Fallon Park

Pools this summer. Swim lessons are based off of the Virginia Swims core curriculum. Please refer to the dates below for class descriptions and session schedules. Each course includes eight 25-minute sessions in the morning at Washington Park Pool or six 35-minute sessions in the evening at Fallon Park Pool. In the event of inclement weather, please call the Weather Hotline at 853-1196. Participants must pre-register one week prior to start date. A $25.00 registration fee per participant is due at the time of registration. (Please be advised that participants may be placed in a different session by the instructor based upon skill level).

Swim Class DescriptionsParent/Child (Baby and Me, Toddler and Me, Preschooler and Me): (6 months–4 years). Instructor works closely with parent in helping infant/toddler develop basic water skills, including water adjustment, safety, and experiencing supported movement through the water. Parents/guardian must participate in each class. Children must wear swimmer diapers.

Preschool Aquatics: (4–6) This is the first time that a child is going to be in the water without a parent or guardian. Skills introduced include water adjustment, breath control, underwater exploration, water safety, and swimming movements on front and back. An excellent class for children who have little or no previous water experience. Children should be emotionally ready to separate from parent. Parents are requested to watch class while sitting on the pool deck.

Swimming 1: (6+) This course is designed to orient participants to the aquatic environment. Instruction includes basic breath control, supported kicking on the front and back, familiarization with arm/leg action for front crawl, and safety skills. No experience is necessary. Swimming 2:

3(6+) This class builds on the fundamental skills learned in Swimming 1. Class focus is on unsupported front and back float and glide, combined stroke on front and back, and increased safety skills. Participants must have successfully completed Swimming 1.

Swimming 3: (6+) Aquatic skills learned in previous classes are continued. Coordination of front and back crawl, elementary backstroke, rotary breathing, treading water and basic rescue skills are taught. Swimming in deep water is introduced.

Swimming 4: (6+) Participants will become more independent and increase their endurance in the water by practicing and refining elementary backstroke, front and back crawl and breaststroke. Diving skills are also introduced.

Swimming 5: (6+) Participants refine and coordinate the key strokes learned in previous swimming courses at increased distances. Front and back open turns are taught. Deep water work includes diving, water entries and treading.

Swimming 6: (6+) This class is often used to introduce some basic lifesaving skills (not a Lifeguarding class) to help the student be more aware of water safety. Learners at this level should be able to do all strokes successfully, and be able to switch between strokes on command. They should be able to dive effectively, and swim from one end of the pool to the other without stopping.

Adult: This class is designed for the beginner swimmer to the advanced. Abilities will be evaluated in the water by a certified instructor.

Of course, if you prefer, you can also do each hike on your own. Your official entry also includes consistent email and blog posts with status updates, hiking routes and extra motivation. And if you are into free gear, all participants are entered into random drawings to win free giveaways throughout the 7 weeks. Congratulations on accepting the challenge!
