Since its founding in 2002, the Red Sox Foundation has aspired to be a model for charitable activity in Major League Baseball.

We are carrying on a charitable tradition that began decades ago when Hall of Famer Ted Williams began visiting Jimmy Fund patients, often before arriving at the ballpark just up the street. That philanthropic legacy has continued through the generations; picked up by Yaz and Andrews, Lynn and Evans, Tek and Wake.

We are proud of the work accomplished in 2016, and the many contributions of our players to continue the legacy of giving, especially as we bid farewell to a player whose presence in the community was as powerful as his home runs. More than 60 years after Ted Williams set the tone, David Ortiz honored and elevated that legacy as he concluded a career marked by outstanding contributions both on and off the field.

Perhaps the greatest legacy left by Ortiz, is the example he set for the younger players. As we continue to “Play it Forward,” we are confident that our young stars will make our community proud and pick up the reins of those who came before them.

In addition to the charitable work of our players and the causes they support, the Foundation’s mission has expanded significantly since its creation. Our original focus has grown to include education, youth baseball, and veteran services. With contributions of over $94 million to more than 1,500 non-profit organizations throughout New England and Lee County, Florida, the impact has been felt by thousands of families.

On these pages, we look back at 2016 and highlight the work of the Red Sox and the Red Sox Foundation in the community. To all of those who have helped support our work and our mission, our sincerest thanks.

Thomas Werner, Chairman Boston Red Sox

Dear Family and Friends of the Red Sox Foundation!

In 2016, you took the pride and passion for our team and channeled it to make a difference in our community. Your commitment to take the Foundation’s mission to heart and make it your own is the essence of why we are able to do what we do – and why it is my sincere pleasure to serve as Honorary Chairman of the Red Sox Foundation.

Together we made it a priority to give back to the community serving the children and families of New England and Lee County, Florida. Whether it was visiting patients undergoing treatment at Dana-Farber, helping students realize their dreams of going to college or supporting our brave men and women of the military facing challenges returning from war, it was a labor of love to give back to a community that has given so much to me.

It is a privilege to work with people like you who make a difference in the lives of so many. And for that, I am deeply grateful and look forward to seeing what impact we’ll make in the year ahead.

Thank you for all you do!

Tim Wakefield, Honorary Chairman Red Sox Foundation

THE JIMMY FUND & THE RED SOX

A Winning Lineup Since 1953

Launched in 1953, the partnership between The Jimmy Fund and the Boston Red Sox remains the longest standing, most renowned team-charity affiliation in all of professional sports. The Jimmy Fund has become a global symbol for raising funds that support astounding and ongoing scientific breakthroughs in cancer treatment.

In 2016, Red Sox players Brock Holt and Pablo Sandoval continued the proud tradition of serving as the team’s Jimmy Fund Co-Captains. Their visits to the Jimmy Fund Clinic at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute brought joy and excitement to hundreds of patients and families.

The Red Sox Scholars, presented by Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, is an award-winning program launched in 2003. Each year, the program selects a new class of Boston Public School seventh graders to receive mentoring, enrichment activities and college scholarships. To date, 262 students, who come from diverse backgrounds and have persevered in the face of many challenges, have been awarded scholarships of up to $10,000 upon enrollment in higher education.

The Home Base Program, a partnership of the Red Sox Foundation and Massachusetts General Hospital, was created in 2009 under the leadership of Red Sox Chairman Tom Werner. It’s dedicated to healing the invisible wounds of war for post-9/11 veterans, Service Members and their Families through world-class clinical care, wellness, education and research. Home Base offers clinical and counseling services in individual or group settings to veterans and their spouses, parents, children, siblings, grandparents, significant others and other loved ones in their lives throughout the deployment cycle. They recognize that when one family member serves, the entire family serves.

In 2016, Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus presented the Home Base Program with the highest possible award for a civilian organization prior to a game at Fenway Park. Red Sox Chairman Tom Werner said, “To have Home Base recognized with this distinctive award is a testament to the important work being carried out by the clinicians and physicians who tackle the challenges faced by our veterans returning from war and their families.”

Each year, the Red Sox Foundation organizes the Run to Home Base, inviting supporters from all over the country to fundraise and run on behalf of the Home Base Program. Above: The event generated $1.8 million in 2016 thanks to thousands of participants who crossed the finish line at Fenway Park’s home plate on July 23.

Providing recreational opportunities for inner-city boys and girls – ages 9 to 18 – the Foundation’s Reviving Baseball in Inner-Cities (RBI) Program uses the sport to promote the importance of good decision-making. In addition to playing baseball and softball, the RBI program serves to develop good nutritional choices, leadership, respect for others, and nonviolent conflict resolution, help meet one’s potential, and maintain an overall commitment to the community.

In addition to its RBI program, the Red Sox Foundation supports numerous organized baseball activities for Boston youth:

• The Boston Area Church League brings more than 600 Boston children to ball fields in the summer. They play Saturday doubleheaders with pastors as coaches, police as umpires, and assistant district attorneys as volunteers.

• The Lindos Sueños program, which the Red Sox created with philanthropist Charlene Engelhard in 2004, brings American teens of various backgrounds to the Dominican Republic each summer to play with their teenage counterparts. Before taking the field each afternoon at the Red Sox Academy, the children collaborate each morning to engage in community service projects to aid residents.

A special thanks to Mayor Martin J. Walsh, Boston Parks & Recreation Department, Boston Police Department, Aramark, BoSox Club, Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation, JetBlue Airways, Jordan’s Furniture, Neighborhood Health Plan, Pablo Sandoval Foundation, Poland Spring, and Yawkey Foundations.

When Red Sox Principal Owner John Henry first visited the Dimock Center in Roxbury in 2004, he spent several hours touring the nationally recognized health facility. The Red Sox Foundation soon pledged to help fund after-school programs for children and teens and GED programming. The Dimock Center provides health and social service programs, handling over 76,000 visits annually with 17,000 unique patients and clients representing a wide range of socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds.

The Red Sox Foundation is the single largest charitable contributor to The Dimock Center, a leading provider of lifesaving addiction recovery services, treating 4,500 people each year.

A core commitment of the Red Sox Foundation is to dedicate substantial time and resources to community service. True to that philosophy, the New England Red Sox Service Scholarships Program honors public high school seniors who have demonstrated both high academic achievement and a commitment to community service. Each recipient receives a $1,000 college scholarship during a special pregame ceremony at Fenway Park. In 2016, the Red Sox Service Scholarships provided scholarships to 145 high school students throughout NH, ME, CT, RI and VT.

With the leadership of Red Sox Foundation Board Member Mike Egan and generous corporate partners, the Foundation sponsored up to 200 Massachusetts Little League baseball and softball teams in 2016. Nearly 68,000 boys and girls — ages 5 to 16 — annually participate in the Massachusetts Little League program, playing outdoors, getting exercise and learning the importance of sportsmanship, fair play and discipline.

David Ortiz takes his rightful place on the Mt. Rushmore of Boston sports immortals, having left an impression on the field and in the community as indelible as such illustrious predecessors as Ted Williams, Bill Russell, Bobby Orr, Larry Bird, and Tom Brady.

Beloved by Red Sox fans and his teammates as “Big Papi,” Ortiz was the connective thread to World Series titles in 2004, 2007 and 2013, helping the Red Sox break an 86-year championship drought. In the span of one calendar day in October, 2004, Ortiz delivered a walkoff home run in the 12th inning and a walkoff single in the 14th inning against the New York Yankees in the ALCS, triggering the greatest comeback in major league history.

“For me, for all of us,’’ said Red Sox Principal Owner John W. Henry, “David’s career falls somewhere between magic and myth, a difference-maker this franchise waited for almost a century to arrive.’’

But Ortiz’s impact was not limited to his feats as a player. The recipient of MLB’s Roberto Clemente Award for humanitarian service in 2011, Ortiz, along with his wife, Tiffany, have championed critical pediatric care through the David Ortiz Children’s Fund, which has netted more than $2 million for children in need in his native Dominican Republic and in New England. Partnering with Mass General Hospital for Children and the World Pediatric Project, Ortiz’s foundation has helped to save the lives of over 500 children in the DR and helped countless children in New England.

Outside of their commitment to the David Ortiz Children’s Fund, both David and Tiffany have been heavily involved with the Red Sox Foundation and the many charitable organizations who have sought its aid and support. Whether it’s promising to hit a home run for a child from the Jimmy Fund, taking swings with a Make-A-Wish recipient in the batting cage, or Tiffany’s perennial presence at Foundation events like From Fenway to the Runway, Picnic in the Park, and her work and advocacy for the Greater Boston Food Bank and UNICEF, the Ortiz’s have always lent their time and opened their hearts to the New England community.

Together, along with their children Jessica, Alex, and D’Angelo, the Ortiz family has left an enduring mark on Red Sox Nation.

“It’s only fitting that the Red Sox have chosen to retire his number, and that his name will be emblazoned on a bridge and a street outside Fenway Park,’’ the Boston Globe wrote in an editorial.

OUT IN THE COMMUNITY

Players

Meeting a favorite Red Sox player face-to-face is quite a thrill for fans of all ages, especially for those who could use a little pick-me-up. That’s why the team takes pride — and the players derive sincere enjoyment — in participating in the team and Foundation’s charitable and community outreach programs. In 2016, the players and coaches made 561 community appearances, and Red Sox alumni made 275 more.

Giving Back

In addition to other community visits, many players have particular causes that they are passionate about. “Pedroia’s Platoon” (Dustin Pedroia), “Pablo’s Pandas” (Pablo Sandoval), Hanley’s Heavy Hitters” (Hanley Ramirez), Bullpen Buddies (Red Sox relief pitchers) and Red Sox Novatos (Red Sox Latino players) are all programs which invite different groups in the community to come watch BP and take in a game, as well as meet and greet opportunities. Additionally, Rick Porcello annually partners with Team Joseph in a fight against Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. David Price’s Project One Four Foundation is dedicated to making a difference in the lives of youth by supporting several programs and organizations focused on learning life skills in a safe, supportive environment.

It’s the time of year that excites an entire Red Sox Nation. When the packed buses roll down Yawkey Way and head south to Spring Training and Fenway South, fans know that it’s time for baseball – and the end of winter is near!

While hard at work training in February and March at JetBlue Park in Lee County, Florida, the team makes plenty of time to support numerous local charitable organizations. We are especially thankful to our broadcast partner, NESN, and the Biogen Foundation for their amazing support of Red Sox Foundation Charity Game Night. The entire telecast is dedicated to raising awareness for the many worthy programs and organizations supported and run by the Foundation.
