You don’t need to know a lot about music to do the songs and activities in this book. With the Learn & Play series, you and your family can share hours of singing, playing, and enjoying music together.

musiC AnD You

Here are some fun ways to add music making to your life every day:

1. name that sound Game: Play a sound from the kitchen and have a family member or friend name it while listening from the next room. You can play sounds that are as easy as running water and as challenging as peeling a carrot.

2. make instruments: Fill a coffee can with dried beans to make a snare drum. Use wooden spoons as drum sticks. Cover one end of an empty toilet paper roll with wax paper, fasten with a rubber band and hum through the open end to make a kazoo. There are many more you can do.

3. Parodies: Make up new words to the songs in this book, or other songs you knows well. Make up songs about a pet, friends, family, the morning routine, school, or anything at all.

4. Listen for Rhythms: Car wiper blades, heartbeat, washing machine, dryer, clocks, raindrops, etc. Make a list of things that have a steady rhythm and things that have an unsteady rhythm.

5. Attend Performances: Go to concerts, resitals and other musical performances whenever possible.

intRoDuCtion

Welcome to First Act’s Learn & Play Harmonica. This method has been designed to teach beginners the basics of playing the harmonica and reading music. You will learn basic melodies and music notation while having fun making music.

HARmoniCA HistoRY

The harmonica was invented in 1821, by a German clock maker named Christian Friedrich Ludwig Buschmann. It is a member of the aerophone family of instruments. Aerophones produce musical sounds by air vibrating in the instrument. Other members of the aerophone family include recorder, clarinet, trumpet, and accordion.

step 1 Left Hand

Hold the harmonica with your left hand. Your thumb should be below the harmonica and your fingers should be above it. Look at the picture to check your left-hand position.

step 2 Right Hand

Cup your right hand around the back of your left hand as shown.

Reverse your hands in Step 1 and Step 2 if you are left-handed.

Put the harmonica up to your lips. Make sure your lips cover the top and bottom of the harmonica so no air can escape. Now exhale or blow gently into the harmonica.

The harmonica requires little care. After you are finished playing, tap it gently against the palm of your hand to remove any excess moisture. Tap it on the side of the harmonica against the holes.

notes and Rhythms

Music is made up of notes (pitches) and rhythms (length of notes). Notes on the harmonica are shown with the numbers 1–10.

Music is divided into measures by bar lines. A double bar line means the end of a song. A rhythm clef is at the beginning of every line of harmonica music in this book.

exHALe/inHALe

Harmonicas are unique. Most wind instruments only make a sound when you exhale and blow air into them. The harmonica is the ONLY wind instrument that makes a musical sound whether you blow air into it (exhale) OR draw air out of it (inhale).

Red = exhale (Hot Air)

We will use red numbers for exhale notes. An easy way to remember this is: red = hot air.

Blue = inhale (fresh Air)

We will use blue numbers for inhale notes. An easy way to remember this is blue = fresh air on a warm spring day.

Practice making sounds by exhaling and inhaling gently into the harmonica.

Play “Whole-Note Hot Breath” on page 15, using whole notes (four beats of sound) and whole rests (four beats of silence). Play any group of holes on the harmonica using the exhale breath (hot air).

The best way to start a song is to count four steady beats (count at the same speed as the song you are about to play), and then begin to play

PLAYinG CHoRDs

Chords are a group of three notes played at the same time. They are easy to play and great for sing alongs and having fun with music.

Harmonica numbers tell you which holes to blow (exhale) or draw (inhale).

This picture means blow into holes 3, 4, and 5 at the same time, on your harmonica.

Line up your mouth with holes 3, 4, and 5. You can use the tip of your tongue to count the holes and find the right starting place. Blow gently. Congratulations! You just played your first chord.

LA PLACe De LA musiQue DAns votRe vieVoici quelques jeux ludiques qui vont vous permettre d’intégrer la musique à vos activités quotidiennes :

1. De quel bruit ou son s’agit-il ? : Faites un bruit, par exemple de la cuisine, puis demandez à un membre de votre famille ou à un ami de l’écouter de la pièce voisine et de l’identifier. Il peut s’agit tout simplement de l’eau qui coule, ou pour corser les choses, de l’épluchage d’une carotte !

2. fabriquez vos propres instruments : Remplissez une cafetière de grains de café secs de manière à former une caisse claire. Servez-vous de cuillères en bois en guise de baguettes de tambour. Couvrez l’une des extrémités d’un rouleau de papier toilette de papier sulfurisé, fixez-le avec un élastique et fredonnez par l’extrémité ouverte comme avec un mirliton. La liste peut s’étendre à l’infini.

3. Les parodies : Inventez de nouvelles paroles à chanter sur les mélodies contenues dans cette méthode, ou pour accompagner toute autre chanson célèbre. Inventez des chansons traitant de sujets tels que vos animaux domestiques, vos amis, votre famille, les taches matinales quotidiennes, l’école, ou toute autre chose.

4. Écoutez les rythmes : Balais d’essuie-glace de voiture, battements du cœur, machine à laver, séchoir, réveil, gouttes de pluie, etc.. Constituez une liste d’éléments au rythme régulier et une liste d’éléments au rythme irrégulier.

5. Allez au spectacle : Assistez à des concerts, des récitals et autres spectacles musicaux lorsque l’occasion se présente.

Bienvenus à la Méthode d’apprentissage de l’harmonica ‘Learn & Play’ de First Act. Cette méthode est conçue pour enseigner les bases de l’harmonica et du solfège aux jeunes débutants. Vous allez apprendre des mélodies de base et des notions de solfège tout en vous amusant à jouer de la musique.

L’HistoiRe De L’HARmoniCAL’harmonica fut inventé en 1821 par l’horloger allemand Christian Friedrich Ludwig Buschmann. L’harmonica fait partie de la famille des aérophones. Les instruments aérophones produisent des sons musicaux grâce aux vibrations de l’air à l’intérieur de l’instrument. La flûte à bec, la clarinette, la trompette et l’accordéon font également partie de la famille des aérophones.

Le sAvieZ-vous?L’harmonica porte également le nom d’orgue à bouche’ et de ‘harpe’. C’est un instrument très populaire qui possède toute une myriade de noms dans de nombreuses langues.

Étape 1 La main gauche

Tenez l’harmonica de la main gauche. Placez le pouce sous l’harmonica tandis que les autres doigts restent au-dessus de l’instrument. Comparez la position de votre main gauche avec celle de l’illustration.

Enveloppez la main gauche de la main droite, de la manière illustrée.Si vous êtes gaucher, inversez la position des mains aux étapes 1 et 2.

Étape 3 savoir souffler

Plaquez l’harmonica contre vos lèvres. Veillez à ce que les lèvres couvrent la partie supérieure tout comme la partie inférieure de l’harmonica de manière à ce que l’air ne puisse pas s’échapper. Vous pouvez maintenant expirer l’air ou souffler doucement dans l’harmonica.

L’harmonica demande peu d’entretien. Lorsque vous avez fini de jouer, tapotez légèrement l’harmonica contre la paume de votre main de manière à faire sortir l’excédent d’humidité. Tapoter sur la partie latérale de l’harmonica, à l’endroit où se trouvent les trous.

La musique est constituée de notes (tonalité) et de rythmes (longueur des notes). Sur l’harmonica, les notes sont numérotées de 1 à 10.

La musique est divisée en mesures par des barres de mesure.

Une double barre de mesure indique la fin de la chanson. La clé de sol se trouve au début de chaque ligne de musique pour l’harmonica.

exPiRAtion/insPiRAtion

L’harmonica est unique en son genre. La plupart des instruments à vent produit un son lorsqu’on fait rentrer l’air en soufflant dans l’instrument. L’harmonica est le seul instrument à vent capable de produire un son *soit en faisant rentrer l’air dans l’instrument (en soufflant), soit en faisant sortir l’air de l’instrument (en aspirant). (NDT :En d’autres termes, l’harmonica est le seul instrument dans lequel on respire (aspirer/souffler)).

mémorisation facile, souvenez-vous que : bleu = à l’air frais d’une belle journée de printemps. Entraînez-vous à produire des sons en soufflant et en aspirant doucement dans l’harmonica.

Jouez ‘Whole Note Hot Breath’ à la page 57 avec des rondes (quatre temps par note) et des pauses (silence de quatre temps). Jouez un groupe de trous quelconque sur l’harmonica en soufflant (expiration d’air chaud).

La meilleure façon de démarrer une chanson est de compter quatre temps réguliers (compter à la vitesse à laquelle vous allez jouer), puis de commencer à jouer.

JoueR Des ACCoRDs

Un accord est un groupe de trois notes que l’on joue simultanément. Les accords sont faciles à jouer et rendent bien en accompagnement de chansons et pour s’amuser à faire de la musique.

Les chiffres indiqués sur l’harmonica indiquent les trous dans lesquels vous devez souffler (expiration) ou aspirer l’air (aspiration).

L’illustration indique de souffler simultanément dans les trous numérotés 3, 4, et 5 sur l’harmonica.

Aligner la bouche sur les trous 3, 4, et 5 de l’harmonica. Aidez-vous du bout de la langue pour compter les trous et trouver le bon point de départ. Soufflez en douceur. Félicitations ! Vous venez tout juste de jouer votre premier accord.
