In certain spots throughout Door County, with just the right weather and wind conditions, you will find kiteboarders of every skill level catching the attention of passers-by with their gymnastic-like tricks and colorful kites. Kiteboarding is considered an extreme sport that continues to grow in popularity, especially off the shore of beautiful Lake Michigan. The most notable location to catch some wind is Anclam Park in Baileys Harbor. It has become a kiteboarding mecca of sorts due to strong winds off the lake which intensify as they reach the harbor. When the wind blows just right, it’s as though kiteborders magically appear before your eyes. If your idea of fun is where the rubber meets the road, bicycling is an awesome way to tour, stay fit and soak up the rural beauty of our quiet country roads from the Belgian settlement in Brussels through historic Sturgeon Bay to the Scandinavian-influenced northern Door area. Consider taking your bike across Death’s Door on the Washington Island Ferry. Bicycling is the perfect way to explore this beautiful island! For more adventure, hit the mountain bike trails that take you deep into the pristine forests and meadows of many of our state parks. Our cycling season is year-round with several of our parks offering trails for fatbiking during the winter season. Whether you’re exploring the County end to end or taking a short trip around the block with the kids, why not bring or rent a bike? Our outfitters have everything you need to get the whole family biking! There’s a certain stillness that stems from the arrival of winter and the first snow fall – we hear all about it in emails from friends and acquaintances. In Door County we throw on an extra layer and get out there! Here the colder months are even cooler. Cross-country skis help us find our way from village to village and hiking boots are traded in for snowshoes for a brisk jaunt through our State Parks. For every sled, we’ve got a snow-capped hill. For every die-hard fishing enthusiast, a patch of frozen lake or bay awaits you. And when the day is done, countless fireplaces are aglow at our inns and restaurants to warm and welcome you. Yes, winter may cause some to hibernate until spring, but in Door County there is no time for sleeping in. Door County is a premier kayaking and stand-up paddle board (SUP) destination in the Midwest. While you’ll see many kayaks and SUPs on top of vehicles throughout the summer season, some visitors opt to rent from local outfitters or take advantage of organized tours in central and northern Door County that are sponsored by well- trained and seasoned guides. Some of the tours even include yoga! With more than 300 miles of scenic shoreline and 5 inland lakes, there is incredible biodiversity to see and explore. Feeling adventurous? Paddle Death’s Door passage in the Washington Island Canoe and Kayak event. Prefer a less strenuous trip? Pick a calm, sunny day and paddle an inland lake. Hiking is one of Door County’s most popular activities because of the vast array of environments and terrains. Our unique geology along the Niagara Escarpment along with our positioning between the bay of Green Bay and deep cool waters of Lake Michigan have created rare microclimates. Here you will discover an unusually large number of rare plants, flowers and birds on lands that have been protected for public use. In addition to our 5 State Parks, explore our 19 county parks, and public lands protected by the Nature Conservancy, Door County Land Trust, Ridges Sanctuary, Crossroads at Big Creek, and Wisconsin State Natural Areas year round. Aside from our plentiful opportunities for nature hiking, a walk down scenic Door County country roads is also a treat. Recreational trails abound in Door County! Our 5 state parks allow you to take in natural, scenic views along groomed trails perfect for hiking, biking, running, cross-country skiing, fatbiking, or snowshoeing. While a leisurely hike can be good for the soul, we know getting the adrenaline pumping can also be just what you’re looking for. Plan ahead and choose the perfect trail by using our virtual maps by Trail Genius. Check out trail distance, elevation, 360-degree views and video so you know what to expect as you plan your next adventure in Door County. To virtually explore our state park trails visit DoorCounty.com/Experience/Scenic-Attractions/Parks Whether you are a seasoned runner, training for an upcoming race, or a leisurely jogger that just loves to get outdoors, Door County has the perfect road or trail for you. Imagine pounding the pavement along one of our picturesque back roads, hitting the scenic trails of the ever-so-tranquil Peninsula State Park or wandering through quaint downtown villages. No matter where you run in Door County, you will feel that special sense of serenity as you take in the beauty around you. If setting a new personal record is more your speed, you will find a number of races throughout the year to help you do just that. KITEBOARDING AT SUNSET © CHRIS MILLER If you believe Door County is one of the best places on earth for nearly endless fun under the sun, you’d be about half right. That’s because off of nearly every inch of shoreline, dozens of treasures lie in the form of sunken ships just waiting to be explored by snorkelers and scuba divers in the clear blue water. Currently, there are three dozen ships for divers to easily explore. A great example is the Frank O’Connor, a 300-foot wooden steamship which sank in only 65 feet of water in 1919. Two large boilers and the 12-foot propeller of the O’Connor remain relatively intact to this day, making it an exciting experience and favorite of many divers – both novice and advanced. DOOR COUNTY’SMARITIME TRAIL

Over 200 shipwrecks lie in the waters surrounding Door County and have attracted divers for years. The cold, fresh water preserves the wrecks and provides divers an opportunity to view these historic vessels. With the addition of land-based historic markers, everyone can learn about the rich heritage entombed in the waters of Lake Michigan and Green Bay.

MAP KEY

BOAT/KAYAK...FOLLOW THE RULESThere are two sets of rules that apply to all vessels that are on the navigable waters of the United States. They are the Inland Rules and the International Rules. Together, they are commonly known as “the Nav Rules.” The International Rules are also known as the COLREGS, since they were originally “regulations” formulated to prevent “collisions” at sea. Boats over 12 meters long (about 39.4 ft.) must carry a copy of the Nav Rules. Anyone else should certainly familiarize themselves with them. In general, these rules describe the ways in which vessels must act in relation to each other in order to maintain safety on the waters. Certain types of vessels have to “give way” to other types of vessels and the procedures about how to give way are spelled out. Regulations regarding maintaining a safe lookout, maintaining a safe speed, how to manage in narrow channels, what kind of sound signals should be used, what kinds of lights must be on a boat, and how they should be shown in various situations, all strive to keep all members of the boating public safe while they are on the water.
