DESCRIPTION

With no high school baseball in Montana, America’s pastime is kept alive through the American Legion. Since 1925, The American Legion has sponsored a nationwide youth baseball program that has served millions of young players. In Bozeman, the Bucks and Spikes play at Heroes Park at the Gallatin Valley Fair Grounds.

Success has followed Dave Legg at every stop of his coaching career, and his first two seasons leading the Bozeman American Legion program have enhanced that legacy.

Dave LeggHeaD CoaCH, Bozeman BuCks

The former California high school head coach and Divi-sion I assistant has led the Bucks to 75 wins in his first two seasons at the helm, including two trips to the Class AA State Tournament which have produced four victories. In his first season as the head coach of Bozeman’s American Legion Baseball Program in 2012, Legg led a revival. The Bucks rolled to a 41-17 record and finished a close second in the Class AA Eastern Division to the eventual state champion Billings Royals. A young 2013 team – every squad member was eligible to return in 2014 – consolidated those gains with a solid 34-32 campaign. Legg took over the Bucks after long and successful tenures in the California high school and Division I college coaching ranks. Bozeman’s 2012 campaign was one of the most successful in program history. The 41 wins and .707 winning percentage in 2012 were each program bests since 2009, and the team’s play was reminiscent of the stretch of seasons between 2004 and ’09 when the Bucks won at least 40 games each season. A former player at San Diego Mesa Junior College, Legg also played for a season at San Diego State for a season before beginning his coaching career with the Aztecs. He learned his trade under legendary SDSU coach Jim Dietz, coaching future major leaguers such as Tony Gwynn and Bobby Meacham. In 1987 he joined Bill Kinneberg’s staff at Wyoming, helping lead the Cowboys to one of the program’s most successful periods ever. After returning to his native California he was an assistant at Linfield HS in 1993-94 and at Temecula Valley HS in 2000 before taking over the Vista Murrieta HS program (2002-10). He finished his California prep coaching career in 2011 as an assistant at that school. As Vista Murrieta’s head coach, Legg

led his squad to the 2006 CIF Division 3 title game in Ana-heim Stadium and the 2007 Division 2 championship game at Dodger Stadium. He was the Press-Enterprise and California Newspaper Coach of the Year in each of those seasons, earn-ing CIF and LA Times Coach of the Year honors in 2007. Legg coached in the Riverside East-West All-Star Game twice, and led his team to Southwestern League championships in 2006 and ’08.

Legg started 30 games at Utah in 2008, hitting .257 with a dozen RBIs and 14 runs. He was all-league and All-CIF as a senior at Vista Murrieta HS, play-ing with his brother Derek for his father Dave.

LanCe maCkay Head Coach, Bozeman spikes

Lance Mackay, a veteran of the Bozeman coaching scene, begins his first season in the Bucks and Spikes American Legion program. Mackay has served as an assistant coach at Bozeman High School since 2010, including two seasons as the head freshman coach. He spent 2013 as the defensive line coach for the Hawks undefeated state championship team, and prior to his time at the high school coached football at Chief Joseph Middle School and Sacajawea Middle School. Mackay also coached baseball from 2006-09, leading a travel team, coaching at the Majors and Babe Ruth levels in Bozeman Baseball. Lance started his high school coaching life at Copper Hills High School in West Jordan Utah, with

their baseball and football teams, and continued coaching when moving to Great Falls MT in 1999.

Mackay is from strong coaching bloodlines. His brother Guy is an accom-plished coach and teacher in the Salt Lake City, Utah, area, and his father, the late Ken Mackay, played for the San Diego Chargers and later coached prep football. A Salt Lake City native, Mackay attended Dixie State Univer-sity, playing Football, and the University of Utah with a degree in Engineer-ing and Mathematics. He and his wife Angie have three children – Josh, a senior at MSU, Chad, a freshman baseball player at Miles Community College, and Elizabeth, a BHS sophomore.

Coach Alex Bradford returns to the Bozeman American Legion program this summer in a new role, taking over as pitching coach. Bradford pitched for Treasure Valley Community College during the 2013 and 2014 seasons, posting a 1-2 record with one save in 17.2 innings and a 4.20 ERA covering 16 appearances. In three seasons with the Bucks, Bradford compiled a 13-7 record with one save. As a senior in 2012 Bradford was spectacular, posting a 2.39 ERA in 53.2 innings, allowing opponents to bat .219 with less than one hit-plus-walk-per-innings-pitched. In his three-year career he struck out 144 while walking just 37 in 156 innings pitched.
