Tubatse Chrome to generatetheir own electricity

Tubatse Chrome is one of the Samancor ChromeSmelting Operations situated in Steelpoort. It is caught in the vice of Eskom’s price demandand the security of supply that limits it ’sproduction capacities. It is from thesechallenges that the innovative capacity ofTubatse Chrome was induced; RenewableEnergy and Energy Efficiency initiatives wereborn to save energy and preserve theenvironment.Tubatse has the capacity to produce 420kt ofChrome per annum with an energyconsumption of 1600 GWh/a.In the production of Chrome from the sixsubmerged arc furnaces at Tubatse, about996000Nm3/h fume gas at 550° C is lost to theatmosphere with an equivalent of 42MVA of

energy. The energy can be equated to 126kt of coalused to produce electricity. Tubatse Chrome hascome up with an innovative solution by building apower plant which will recover some of the lostheat energy from the furnaces and converting itto electric power. The selected technology alsopreserves the use of water.Tubatse Chrome will be producing their own cleanenergy by August 2013!The project wi ll enable Tubatse to remaintechnologically competitive, reduce the Tubatseenergy consumption by 18.76%, lay a solidfoundation for the sustainable development of thebusiness, reduce the carbon footprint by over200,000 tCO2e per annum and createapproximately 30 sustainable professionalemployment opportunities.

The female employees of Tubatse Chrome waslast week treated to a special day of fun as partof the company’s Women’s Month activities. They enjoyed a day of playful team building atTubatse Chrome Club.

Mnr. Eric van Staden sê: “Almal moet leer uitwat gebeur het en in daardie opsig is dit goeddat dit gebeur het”.

Mr David Mashaba said: “The best way toavoid such things is to have patience, trustand negotiations. On that side last week(Marikana), the people were not negotiatingin faith and some people felt cheated. It is nota good idea to extort to violence”.

Ms Khensane Nkuna said: “I think thoseactions were just unnecessary. It is due to alack of knowledge that it happened. If they(the strikers) were better educated theywould not have acted like that. It is unfair thatthey say nothing about the two policemenwho were killed. They only go on about thethirty-something strikers who were killed. Ifsomeone is attacking you, you have toprotect yourself. They should get rid of thislaw allowing people to strike. They have tolearn to talk and have proper meetings withtheir leaders”.

Mr Alfred Matjie said: “The way to prevent asimilar thing in future is to have goodcommunication with our leaders. There mustbe communication between the shareholdersof mines, directors, communities andemployees. The mines must also look afterthe environment and development. Thewhole thing last week was not right.Negotiations are good, we should not fighteach other”.

Mr Eric Ramulongo said: “That kind ofsituation you cannot prevent. Our politiciansare failing us. I was shocked! How can 34people get killed at the same time?Something went very wrong”.

Mr Stephen Mashaba said: “What we’veheard is that those unions - the one feel theymust also be recognised. They were notrecognised and that is why there wasbloodshed. If all mineworkers are under oneunion like public servants, maybe they willhave a greater voice and things such as thiswill be in the past. I condemn all violence.People should not fight”.

Mr Justice Mphahlele said: “The mainproblem is the police. They must workaccording to their parameters. They must nottake the law into their own hands - killingpeople using live bullets. They are not themilitary. Those found guilty of shooting thestrikers must be fired as an example toothers. People must negotiate. Those inpower on both sides must be able to find anamicable solution”.

Mnr.

Mnr. Pieter Mokgwatsane sê: “Die Unions isdié wat die mense verkoop. Die Unions is niegoed nie. Die goewerment moet by weeswanneer almal praat en sorg dat dieonderhandelinge goed gaan”.

Last week Thursday went down in SouthAfrican history as one of the most violent dayssince the fall of apartheid.Approximately 3000 armed strikers from theMarikana Platinum Mine near Rustenburg wenthead on with a tactical unit from the SouthAfrican Police Force. 34 Strikers were killedwhen the SAPS opened fire on them. Morethan 70 were wounded and 269 were arrested. The strikers consisted mostly out of rock drilloperators who went on strike due to wageincrease demands and conflict between unionson the mine. The strike became violent before the Thursday

Mr Alfred Makofane said: “To prevent asimilar thing in the future there is just oneword - responsibility. Government, owners ofmines, unions and leaders of unions need tobe responsible. If lives are in danger thepolice should act as they did, but if not, theyshould not shoot with live bullets”

Mr Andries Mkhawane and Mr Harry Malahlela said: “We heard Julius Malema is the one whostopped the strike. The Police are violent yes, but sometimes when we protest we are alsocapable of being violent. People should rather talk and not protest. I (Andries) would ratherresign than protest. We can’t afford to lose our jobs because of strikes. They should not strikebecause then everyone loses”.

Mr Jerry Mabilo said: “The leaders of theUnions must control protesters. They mustnot picket with weapons. Marches must bewithout weapons and violence. The policemust also allow people to protest and give awarning before they start shooting. Thoseleaders must ensure there are no weaponsand that their people don’t take the law intotheir own hands”.

Mr Edward Mokoo said: “I blame the police. Why did they use their power? Governmentalso only came after many people died whilethey knew there was a problem long before. Ialso blame the leaders of the unions. Whydid they allow their people to kill policemen? The Union must tell their people not to carryweapons and not to be violent because thepolice will react”.

Mr Aubrey Ratau said: “The problem is withour government. They only care about themines and not the employees. Governmentmust sort it out. Government makespromises but don’t fulfill it. They must sitdown with the mines to sort out this issue ofstrikes. The government sent the police tomake peace. Those strikers were hungry andangry and can’t listen. Those in NUM arealso politicians. It is about politics and notpeople and that is the problem”.

Mnr.

Mr George Kholofelo said: “They must form anew union so that things will go well. Thepolice must use rubber bullets and not realones that kill our brothers. They must alsogive at least five warning shots becauseoften they just arrive and start shooting”.

?Mr Ahmed Abdullah said: “Thatwas very bad. It is so sad that inthis day and age something likethis happened. There must bebetter communication betweenmine owners and workers.Share more. I don’t agree withthe police taking thosemeasures”.
