Mnr.

Mr Frans Mokgotho said: “It is a good thing. This government here with us - themunicipality - there are no people doing theirjob properly. They must fire them and bringin new ones who will be able and willing todo the work”.

Mr Kabelo Molapo said: “It is a very, verygood thing. Many young people would like tobe teachers and will work hard so fire thosewho don’t want to work”.

Mnr.

Mr Leaf Malatjie said: “All lazy people mustbe fired, get the right people who can do thejob! At the end of the day production is lowbecause of those lazy people”.

Mr Botsana Legodi said: “Yes, I think that’sthe right thing to do. Like the municipality, they just don’t respond. Check the way ourtar roads look. There are also teachers whogo around in school hours while they shouldbe teaching”.

Mnr.

As ditwerk sal dit goed wees”.

Ms Mokgadi Mamabolo said: “That shouldhave been done a long time ago. If you don’twork you cannot get paid. You should bepaid for work done. If they will also be re-training people it will be good”.

This week in Parliament Planning MinisterTrevor Manuel said that there are too fewconsequences for public servants who didnot perform. He used the examples of teachers who getpaid “even when they have not taught ourchildren”, policemen and women who avoidbeing involved with crime prevention orhealth professionals in the state’s employwho run profitable private businesses andspend their time resting on the state’s bill.He said that a government skills audit isunder way. He explained that they will betraining public servants that will ensure thatthe different skill-sets required bygovernment is met and that “evidence-based” decisions can be taken. He also condemned public servants doingbusiness with their employer. Saying: “Thereshould be serious consquences”.“It is in the interest of all South Africans tobuild a professional and capable publicservice. Effective implementation will requirea constant drive to improve. Too often theincentives do not encourage people to makethe extra effort,” he added. We asked readers what they think about theskills audit government plans to do and whateffect they think it will have on South Africa’spublic service.

Mr Jankie Mkhondo said: “Governmentcommitted a mistake by removing inspectorsfrom schools. So teachers know nobody ischecking on them. They must bringinspectors back. Once they employ peoplethey must make sure they have the rightqualifications from the start and will be ableto do the work. It will be a good thing thisaudit and everything that goes with it, butdon’t just dismiss people. If people know someone is looking at themwith a sharp eye, they will perform”.

Me.

Mr Lawrence Dlamini said: “That is the way.If it does not work, get rid of them. Getpeople who are willing to work. We aregetting nowhere with people who don’t wantto work and play their part. It is fair to do anaudit on their skills and act accordingly”.

Me.

Mr Teenage Shai said: “They have to trainthem. Many fail to do their jobs because theylack skills. Government must get rid of thosewho are just lazy”.

Mr Doctor Masinga said: “They must not justfire them. They must move them somewhereelse where they can do something useful, like becoming cleaners. It will be the best. Ifthey are just playing around and not working, fire them. They are supposed to work hard”.

Mr Daniel David Phasha said: “It is going tohelp, but they won’t be able to get rid of allthose who don’t want to work”.

Mr Madala Mokoena said: “I think it is a goodthing. The lazy ones must go - they just eatthe money. They must get people who wantto work hard and do the job”.

Ms Unice Lekodi said: “If they can deal withthose people and do a big audit it will begood. It will be good to re-train or fire thosewho are not working properly. They must getinspectors and HODs to check on them”.

Mr Rollen Mashego, Mr Simon Makola and Mr Dennis Tonga said: “They will not be able to get rid of all those who do not do their workproperly. There are just too many. There is also too much corruption, so there will be tip-offs etc. before anything happens”.

On Tuesday this week we took the key of a Chevrolet Utility 1.4Club from Westvaal Steelpoort’s Sales Manager, Timothy Chowles, for a short trip to see if something like this will work to transport(surprise) newspapers!

The one we got to drive was fitted with the optional alloy wheelsand also had a rubberised load bay, the rubberising not standard.Otherwise it was as advertised.

We did not have a load of newspapers at hand (it get snatchedup too fast on Fridays) so we tested the bakkie empty.

First thing that impressed yourclaustrophobic editor is that the cabin islarge enough for bigger guys than him, andthey will also not feel as if in a sardine can.Aircon works marvellously, although whenyou hit rough tar, the road noise combinedwith an air conditioner fan running at halfspeed, may just be a little bit too much foryour ears. Pavarotti from the radio ormemory stick in the USB slot or CD-player,may not reach your ears unscathed. Also becareful with your water or cool drinkcontainer. If it is too high, it will be difficult toswitch Pavarotti off because it will obscuresome of the radio’s controls. Your hand willalso knock against the bottles time andagain as you switch the gears with the longthrow gearlever.

So much for the gripes. The 1389 ccpetrol engine pulls quite strongly, and if youdo not plan to race with the vehicle (it issupposed to be a workhorse) we do notthink you really need the more expensive1800 cc … It is also more economic to runand the 120 Nm of torque at 3200 revscombined with the 68 kW at 6000 revs willprove to be adequate to haul 743 kg (max)up a pass, although you will not necessarilybe on top first.

Directional stability is satisfactory andthe bumpy stretch of the R 555 past the LionSmelter to the Steel Bridge did not faze thiseasily likeable bakkie. The instrumentcluster should be kept away from your son, because it is very much Playstation-like, butworks surprisingly well, even in harshsunlight.

The seats are comfortable and the spacebehind them almost boot-like in size. Wehad no problem in fitting camera bags and alaptop bag behind one seat.

Turning off to Ga-Mampuru to take aspin on the gravel road we soonencountered a herd of cattle in the tarredroad (we were driving 60 km/h) and the ABSbrakes work extremely well for a bakkie. Weeven had time to get a camera out andphotograph the creatures before theydisappeared into the village.

Taken that the load bay was empty itwas bumpy, but still comfortable when we hitthe gravel.

Someone once said that lingerie modelsdo not load bags of cement. That task is leftto the uglier and more muscular members ofthe species. The new Chevrolet Utilitybakkie may be not very pretty to some, butwe are sure that it will take a load and keepon working for years, whether as a secondprivate vehicle or in a small business oreven as a general runabout.

Contact Westvaal Steelpoort at 013 2309519 if you want one. It is also reasonablypriced and yes, it will carry a full load ofnewspapers with ease.
