The John T. Ryan Safety Award recognises outstandingsafety practices in the mining industry. This year saw theaward presented in South Africa for the first time toModikwa Platinum Mine on 19 August with the officialtrophy handing ceremony at th mine, taking place onWednesday this week.

The John T. Ryan award was presented at theprestigious annual MineSAFE Awards, a joint venturebetween the Southern African Institute of Mining andMetallurgy (SAIMM), the Association of Mine ManagersSouth Africa (AMMSA) and the South African CollieryManagers Association (SACMA), and with valued inputfrom the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR), theChamber of Mines, the National Union of Mineworkers(NUM) and the United Association of South AfricaUnions, the event provided an opportunity for severalmines to share and learn new ways of improving safetywithin the industry.

The trophy, depicting a miner coming home to hisfamily at the end of his shift, symbolises the importanceof every life. The trophy was named after John ThomasRyan, a mine rescue worker in the USA coal mines in theearly 1900s. Ryan and George Deike, a fellow rescueworker, identified the lethal combination of methanegasses and open flame cap lamps as one of the mainreasons for the high fatality rates in the mines at thattime. Working with Thomas Edison, the partnersdeveloped and launched the first incandescent cap lampthat has become the forerunner of the electric cap lampthat is still used today.

MSA , leading manufacturer of sophisticated safetyequipment and locally represented by MSA Africa, is theofficial sponsor of the prestigious award. “This awardpays tribute to mines that are dedicated to turning apassion for safety into success,” said Hayley Arnesen(photograph top, right) MSA’s Customer Focus Programsand Loyalty Director in Africa at the handing overceremony at Modikwa on Wednesday. She said the

award is fast becoming the most presitigoius in theworld and it will be presented next year in fourcategories. She explained that the award was highlyregarded and tailored for the mining industries in thedifferent countries where it is presented.

A newly established South African John T. Ryancommittee, consisting of representatives fromAMMSA, SACMA, SAIMM, and the Chamber ofMines, was tasked with determining which SouthAfrican mine had the lowest total injury frequency rate(TIFR) during 2010.

Although there was only one overall winner in2011, in future a winner will be selected for each ofthe four different categories: Platinum, Gold, Coal andDiamond & Base Metals.

Each of the category winners will receive a plaguewith the overall winner collecting the bronze floatingtrophy.

She said the idea behind the bronze trophy is bestput in the words of French Inspector General ofMines, Fredric Le Play (1806-1882): “The mostimportant thing to come out of a mine is the miner.”

After receiving the trophy, Modikwa PlatinumMine’s Business Leader (in the bottom photographgetting assistance with the heavy floating trophy),Mandla Nxumalo, told the audience andrepresentatives of MSA that Modikwa realises it has amassive challenge ahead to maintain the safetyrecord that made it a trophy winner.

He also acknowledged the role of his predecessor,Sean O’Connor, in establishing the solid base forsafety at Modikwa with the rest of the personnel.

He also said he not only spoke on behalf of thecompany, but also the unions and contractors whoindividually play crucial roles in the mine’s safetyrecord. He expressed the vision at every mine inSouth Africa’s safety record should be worthy of thetrophy Modikwa just received.

Breast cancer, as the name suggests, is a cancer that affects the breasts or mammary glands. It is the second most popular cancer after lung cancer and is the fifth most common cause of deaths due tocancer worldwide. Breast cancer incidence increases with age; the older the woman, the more chances ofbeing dignosed with breast cancer. Nevertheless, younger women with breast lumps are at a far greater riskfor breast cancer in comparison to asymptomatic women of the same age group, and to older women.Contrary to popular belief that it is a woman’s affliction, it can affect both men and women.Breast cancer can be inherited both from either a female or a male relative who may have had the diseaseor who acts as a carrier of the mutant gene(s).Breast cancer, like other forms of cancer, is considered to be the final outcome of a legion ofenvironmental and hereditary factors. However, the exact cause is not known. It is suspected that morethan one factor is involved. Also the risk of breast cancer increases, as a woman gets older

Common signs & symptoms of breast cancer include:

· A change in how the breast or nipple feelsYou may experience nipple tenderness or notice a lump or thickening in or near the breast or inthe underarm area.

· A change in how the breast or nipple looks. This could mean a change in the size or shape of thebreast or a nipple that is turned slightly inward. In addition, the skin of the breast, areola ornipple may appear scaly, red or swollen or may have ridges or pitting that resembles the skin ofan orange.

· Nipple discharge

An Early Breast Cancer Detection Plan should include:

· Beginning at age 20: Performing breast self-exams and looking for any signs of change.· Age 20 to 39: Scheduling clinical breast exams every three years.· By the age of 40: Having a baseline mammogram and annual clinical breast exams.· Ages 40 to 49: Having a mammogram every one to two years depending on previous findings.· Ages 50 and older: Having a mammogram every year. · All Ages:· Maintaining a healthy weight, following a low-fat diet, getting regular exercise, quitting
