Clearing bushes to curb crimeThe Leboeng SAPS joined hands with the Matshokgeng Subfo-rum of the Community Policing Forum to do debushing in Gam-oraba Matshokgeng Village on 30 September 2015. Trees next to the road and a local tavern were were thick and ideal hiding places for criminals targeting innocent people in robberies. The SAPS has in the past struggled, but eventually succeeded in arresting criminals hiding in these bushes. The Leboeng SAPS said that they want communities to be safe from criminal ele-ments, especially with December approaching.

Suspected copper thieves nabbed

The Leboeng SAPS arrested four suspects for possession of copper minerals earlier this month.

The four were arrested after a tip off by a mine security company. They alerted the SAPS about a specifi c vehicle travelling on the R36. The vehicle was found next to the Strydom Tunnel carrying copper with a estimated mar-ket value of R2 million.

The suspects were arrested and ap-peared in the Leboeng Magistrate’s Court. The case will be in court again on 6 Octover for a formal bail application.

The SAPS will be strengthening their presence on the R36 and motorists can expect more roadblocks.

15 But when the chief priests and the teachers of the law saw the wonderful things he did and the children shouting in the temple area, “Hosanna to the Son of David,” they were indignant. 16 “Do you hear what these children are saying?” they asked him. “Yes,” replied Jesus, “have you never read, “ ‘From the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise’ ?”Matthew 21:15 -16 NIV

No to abuse and violenceOn 24 September the children of Mangab-ane Village and those attending Makgakant-se Primary School gathered to walk through the village streets with Kohin and other Christian Youth Workers. They aimed to bring awareness against violence and abuse of women and children. The youngsters car-ried posters with various messages, some of which were read out along the way. They also chanted “We are the children, the future of this country” to draw attention. After the walk the children received a meal at Mangabane Primary School.

A strong contender

General Motors dealers, prospective customers and members of the media converged at Alkmaar just outside Mbombela (Nelspruit) this week for the company’s travelling roadshow, showcasing the new Isuzu KB extended cab and double cab bakkie range.

Platinum Gazette participated in the drives on Tuesday as guests of Westvaal Mashishing and Westvaal Steelpoort.

Starting off the people from General Motors explained how the new bakkies differ from the old range. Nothing dramatic in the looks department, except cleaner more aggressive lines and the addition of stuff like daylight running lights on the more expensive models. Where it counts is under the hood, as the Americans say.

The fl eetside and LE 250 spec bakkies gets a new diesel engine pushing out 100 kW and 320 Nm of torque, while the KB 300 in LX trim now pushes out R130 kW and 320 Nm of torque, except the extended cab and 4x4 double cab automatic, that have 380 Nm of torque.

The interiors are also upgraded and the bells and whistles extend with your budget up the range. More models are also to be had to suit everybody’s needs.

First on the driving agenda was travelling on the N4 and we fi rst tackled the KB 300 auto 4 x 4. The bakkie drives well with very good stability and feels almost car like, with the hill control on the gearbox working fairly well. As a day-to-day bakkie, we liked the two-wheel drive KB250 manual more. Yes, it feels more like a bakkie and not like a car, but will do exemplary service for every day living.

Great fun was had on the Alkmaar 4 x 4 track, with an explanation from the GM guys around the improvements on the bakkies. Stability and traction control in addition to diff locks now augments the bakkies’ ability in the rough stuff. The newspaper’s woman test driver’s com-ment after the drive was “I am not sure I am more clued up with all the technical stuff, but it was very nice and extremely easy to just drive through the holes and obstacles.”

A complaint from the woman driver? “Ag man, they still do not have a lipstick mirror on the driver’s side!”

There you have it. Go and buy one.
