www.patientsmedical.com

Cosmetic Surgery Warning

The plastic surgeon should not take chances when performing cosmetic surgery

Be conservative You can always do more

later - trying to be too ambitious can create problems

It is almost impossible to undo something that is overdone

About 30% of the people who apply for cosmetic surgery should be turned

down. Not everyone is a good candidate.

The Consultation

As important as the operationShould be an “in depth”

consultationCommunicate freely with

your doctorExplain what you think should be

doneThe doctor should tell you what CAN

and CANNOT be doneFind out the EXACT fees and what is

Manage Your ExpectationsKeep in mind that the result you are

looking for is improvement – NOT perfection

Realism is the key to successThe surgeon can only work with what

he or she is given and make the most of the specific part without interfering with function

A plastic surgeon is a physician – NOT a magician!

The grass is always greener in someone else’s back yard

Page 24: Plastic Surgery Myths - Busted!

Questions to Ask Yourself Am I physically healthy, eating right

and not smoking? Do I have realistic expectations for the

results of my procedure? Am I exploring plastic surgery for

myself or to fit someone else’s ideals? Have I spent time testing my

knowledge about plastic surgery and exploring the qualifications of plastic surgeons?

www.patientsmedical.com

Page 25: Plastic Surgery Myths - Busted!

Questions to Ask Yourself Have I told my plastic surgeon about

medical conditions, drug allergies and medical treatments (including past treatments with fillers, facial shaping and Botox)?

Have I reviewed with my plastic surgeon my current use of medicines, vitamins, herbal supplements, alcohol and drugs?

Am I ready to do my part to ensure the success of my procedure?

Page 26: Plastic Surgery Myths - Busted!

Questions to Ask Yourself Do I know the procedure’s after-

effects and recovery time? Have all my questions been

thoroughly addressed by my plastic surgeon?

Where and how will you perform my procedure?

Do you have hospital privileges to perform my procedure? If so, at which hospitals?

Is the surgical facility accredited by a nationally or state-recognized accrediting agency? Or is it state-licensed or Medicare-certified?

What will be expected of me to get the best results?

What is the length of the recovery period and what kind of recovery help will I need?

Liposuction vs. Smart Lipo

Also known as SmartLipo, Smart Liposuction, Laser Liposuction, Laser Body Sculpting

Uses laser energy to liquefy fat before it is removed via a small tube

Some practitioner don’t remove the melted fat, allowing it to be absorbed by the body

www.patientsmedical.com

Page 34: Plastic Surgery Myths - Busted!

Liposuction vs. Smart Lipo Hotly debated by doctors Be sure to do your homework before you go

Expert opinions and real peoples’ reviews Talk to someone who has had it if possible

Your outcome and safety depend on finding a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon and NOT the machine used

Recovery and pain associated with it may take longer because the fat in the protective sheaths around the nerves is also melted

www.patientsmedical.com

Page 35: Plastic Surgery Myths - Busted!

Liposuction vs. Smart Lipo

There is no long-term difference in the skin tightness

There is no scientific evidence that Smart Lipo gives better results than traditional liposuction

“Gummy Bear” Breast Implants

www.patientsmedical.com

Page 37: Plastic Surgery Myths - Busted!

“Gummy Bear” Breast Implants They are simply silicone breast implants that are

more highly cohesive than their predecessors More cohesive = tends to retain its shape and feel

firm Anatomically shaped and have a textured surface

(as compared to smooth-surfaced implants) Anatomic shape may be helpful in cases where

there is very little to no breast tissue

www.patientsmedical.com

Page 38: Plastic Surgery Myths - Busted!

“Gummy Bear” Breast Implants Good for extremely small breasts as well

as someone who has undergone removal of breast for cancer treatment

For women who already have a nice shape but simply prefer additional volume, this type is NOT indicated

If the implant is not placed properly within the breast pocket, it can actually rotate during the early healing period and lead to an unacceptable appearance

www.patientsmedical.com

Page 39: Plastic Surgery Myths - Busted!

“Gummy Bear” Breast Implants

More commonly used smooth, round gel implants will not cause problems if they shift since their rounded shape is even all the way around and there is no specific orientation

Some studies have found the shape of the round implants to appear more natural than those created in an anatomical shape

Vampire Face-Lifts

Page 41: Plastic Surgery Myths - Busted!

Vampire Face-Lifts

Your own blood is drawn from the blood in your arm and then spun in a centrifuge to separate out the platelets (Platelet-Rich Fibrin Matrix or PRFM)

The processed blood is then injected into the face with the hope of stimulating new collagen production

Selphyl, as the system is called, debuted in 2009

Unproven claims that the results will last two years.

Vampire Face Lifts

Page 43: Plastic Surgery Myths - Busted!

Vampire Face-Lifts

It’s hard to tell if it is an effective filler for hollowed out cheeks and wrinkles

Lack of clinical research proving the efficacy of Selphyl

To date, the FDA has not approved or cleared PRFM=derived in a Selphyl centrifuge to be marketed for facial rejuvenation

Look great…feel great!

Page 45: Plastic Surgery Myths - Busted!

Closing Thoughts

Beauty starts from within, but there is nothing wrong with being attractive on the outside

The key to success is a realistic attitude toward your surgery

The aim is improvement – NOT perfection

Your cosmetic surgery is not the end of the path to youth and beauty – only the start. Beyond is up to you!
