Message from the President After some 20 years I look back on the achieve-ments and progression of the club with consid-erable pride. Over that time the club has devel-oped a firm foundation in the Associations competition with teams in all grades. This sea-son we have 2 teams in State League, 1 in A grade 3 in B grade 1 in C grade.
We have managed to maintain an excellent
Monday night social time thus ensuring we retain our focus on offering the opportunity for people to play badminton at all levels. In 1995 we recommenced a junior program initially offering training for young people on Sunday mornings. That has been further enhanced by the introduction of junior league giving our young people an opportunity to experience competition in a team environment. We currently have 5 teams in the junior league competition. The assistance from Anita Wong, Andrew Combe, Neil Grant, John Ly, Jane Awwad and Gianni Monti in managing the teams is certainly most appreciated. Thank you also to Claudio, Jane, Jeff, Mingmei and Daniel for their dedication to Sunday morning coaching. In 2000 we relocated here to Lockleys after 35 years at Holdfast YMCA. In the end I think the committee’s concerns about the move were unfounded and the club has continued to go from strength to strength. As part of the relocation we set about creating our own club room area and despite a lot of doubters particularly outside the club we have managed to create an outstanding addition to the facility. This is an area which is appreciated by all users of the venue. The project would not have been possible without significant assis-tance from Waternish Constructions, Office of Recreation and Sport, City of West Tor-rens, Davis and Brooks and the voluntary hours by some members. Along the way we have had various events to celebrate our journey all of which have been excellent and fitting occasions. The last of which was the opening ceremony in April this year which was a very appropriate celebration of the lasting legacy we have created. I remain extremely proud of our club in what we have achieved and continue to achieve. We deserve hearty congratulations on our accomplishments with particular regard for the building project. Rest assured you belong to a strong and progressive club and may I remind you that a club is truly a reflection of its members.

David Currie and Jeff Green both played against each other in the
recent Grange Golf Club Championships. Unfortunately for both
of them they missed qualifying in the final eight - David in a play-
off and Jeff by just one shot. Better luck next year !
On another note. Jeff was advised how to play by a 10 year old
member of his club who went on to win Jeff’s section of the club
championships . Seems Jeff has been swinging his clubs incor-
rectly all this time. The 10 year olds 14 year old brother won the A
grade club championship.

COMMENTS MADE DURING THE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS
It’s a lot easier playing
with Katie than playing
mixed with Simon!!
Simon White lost 15
balls in a round of
18 Golf!! Better
stick to badminton
Suck it up princess...get on
court!! This after just having
played and being asked to play
the next game.
You choked it!!
My racquet got in the
way!!! Huh!!!
How Joseph Awwad really broke his
arm…. Joseph and Alex were wrestling
one day, as they do, and Joseph (the
younger brother) was getting the upper
hand. Alex decided to end it with a mighty
thud and broke Joseph’s arm.
Joseph didn’t cry but Alex did. Why???
It seems Joseph kicked Alex where it hurts
most. Ouch!!!! Brings tears to your eyes.
She’s the oldest ladies
doubles winner ever!!
His time will come
Jane!!
Yummy
dip John!!
Club Championships Earlier this month the club Championships were held with good attendance at
both senior and junior level. Our thanks go to Simon White and Simon Oaten for
the efforts they put in in planning and organising the event and Simon Oaten and
Carol in running the event on the day. Thanks also to Jane for her assistance in
running the junior tournament. It is important that I acknowledge the excellent
work done by Eli Awwad in cooking the barbecue. Thank you to all those who
brought salads for the lunch time barbecue. It seemed to me that it was a great
day well run and enjoyed by all.
In September we had the social championships, once again there was good par-
ticipation with Jeff providing his usual handicapping skills. (Very dodgy indeed
some would say.) There were some keenly fought games with a good time had by
all. Thank you to Jeff and Carol for their efforts on the night.

Aaaaaarhh!!! The plague is coming!! Older play-
ers are going through a mid life crisis, wanting to
be 20 again. BIG DEAL you think!! In recent
months people have been subjected to some ordi-
nary sights. It is believed a former coach is behind
this tragic event by helping others improve their
fitness. Many players have taken up cycling and
have been seen riding along the coast lines of
Adelaide. So what you are thinking!! Unless you
have seen one of these older people in lycra bike shorts (ughhh!!! Not a
pretty sight. Believe me I’ve seen one of them) even their wives are refusing
to accept any responsibility for this behaviour.
If you get the sudden desire to improve your fitness, do not attempt to wear
lycra, it only causes humiliation (not to say budgie smuggling as well). As
for anyone who has been seen wearing lycra, there is no cure. For the wives
out there, we apologise. All we wanted to do was play badminton at a com-
petitive level and ‘flog a young buck or two’.
Once again beware of the lycra men, it can be harmful to your eyesight.

Helena is 10 weeks old in the photo. She was born on the 29th July (a
week and a half early) and weighed 2.9kg/6.7pounds and born a
natural, 9 hour labour.
Cheeks are rosy – especially when she cries –and boy has she mas-
tered that skill! But despite the mid evening wake up feeds, Chris and
I are enjoying every moment of this huge learning curve and we can’t
imagine life without her.
As for me – I’m hoping to see you all again –ok give me a little time –
but I’m looking forward to getting on the courts again and seeing my
friendly Monday night badminton bunch again soon.

The 2009 David Currie Club Award was presented to Carol Packard by Cathy Morton (Currie). This award was created by David's family in Scotland through Cathy, his wife, in memory of David Currie a club member whose dedication and commitment to our club was out-standing. Carol’s contribution to our club, es-pecially her commitment to the build-ing project has been outstanding.
The 2009 Shannon Riggs Achievers Award was presented to Mingmei Teo by Brinley Duggan (Shannon’s cousin). This is awarded to a club member who deserves special recognition for their ef-forts and achievements in badminton. Mingmei started at the club in our junior program and moved on to playing in Junior League. She is now a regular member of a senior team participating in SABA competi-tion and is involved in the coaching side of the junior program.
Most Improved club member
Kim Duong.
Kim has improved as a player
and is a valuable asset to our
club.
Finding a nice photo of myself
is a bit of an oxymoron but
here goes.
Ways to injure yourself!!
How many ways can you injure
yourself? Just ask the president of
the club he knows.
♦ Have a stroke.
♦ Cut your ulna nerve on a
smashed headlight
♦ Fall into a bush on the way
home and break 5 bones in your
foot
Going cheap. A used (only slightly)
medium sized moon boot. Good for
skating, keeping your foot warm
and keeping bones in place. Could
also be used on your head to keep
your brain from getting lost!!
Saturday morning
bike riding group Feel like some exercise apart
from playing badminton?
Join the Saturday morning,
lycra wearing bicycling
group (eww!!) Apparently
several Life Members of the
club can be seen sporting
lycra and riding along the
shores.
