1: Plastic Pollution
• Living with plastics
• What we throw away…
• Plastic pollution on our beach
• What can we do?
2: Project AWARE
Every year, more than 200 Million
tonnes of plastics are produced all over the
world.
200 Million tonnes = 200,000,000,000 kilograms!
Every week, 10 Billion plastic bags
are used around the world
10 Billion = 10,000,000,000 plastic bags!
Sadly, every year 6 Million tonnes of rubbish and thrash that we throw away end up in our Oceans.
90% of the rubbish are PLASTICS!
6 Million tonnes = 6,000,000,000
kilograms
Plastics that we throw away go into the drain, then into streams, rivers
and finally, the oceans.
Plastics take MORE THAN
450 YEARS to decompose
(i.e. to break down)
Today it is estimated that
100 Million tonnes of
plastics are FLOATING in our Oceans.
These floating plastics then
come together in areas called
the “Plastic Soup”
In the ocean, plastic materials break into smaller pieces that float in the sea water like “soup".
These tiny plastics are
then eaten by fish like this
Rainbow runner and
other marine animals
Some poor animals also
get tangled up with these
plastic materials as
they swim in the sea.
A beach in Malaysia
polluted by plastics! Not so beautiful now isn’t it?
A remote area in North America
polluted by plastics from
the sea.
A beach on a remote
island about 1,500km
from Hawaii. Plastic
arrives here!
Try not to use plastic bag so
much!
Avoid using plastic food containers and
utensils (fork, spoon, straw etc.)
Use water bottles that
we can re-fill and re-use!
Pick up thrash and rubbish
from our beaches!
Take part in beach clean-up activities!
Organize a beach clean-
up event with your friends and family!
If you’re a scuba diver,
why not take part in an
underwater clean-up?
Tell your family and
friends about this issue of
plastic pollution!

2: AWARE - Aquatic World Awareness, Responsibility and Education
2 Main Focus:
Project AWARE “Coordinators” such
as Ocean Elements organizes beach
clean-up, underwater clean-
up and other conservation
activities
Statistics on Marine Debris activities by Project AWARE in 2012
Statistics from our Beach Clean-upevent in Dungun,
Terengganu (2012)
Every year, more than 38 Millionsharks are killed to get their fins
Malaysia is the 10th LARGESTexporter of shark fins in the
world!
Today 70 – 80% shark species are already extinct (meaning
they have all been killed or have died!)
